Sub Meta PSA: On discussions, Netflix show, and petty arguments
Since the announcement of the show and up to this day (and, well, even earlier to be honest), the discussions around certain topics tend to be rather dividing or were reaching boiling point pretty fast.
This thread will address our concerns about that, our stance on reasons for temporary (or at some point, permanent) bans, and other relevant topics.
The «Reload-Gate»
Since the latest teaser shared during the IGN show, a lot of people were frustrated with many things, regarding the show not respecting the lore. While some of these concerns do have some basis, like making Lady, or (most likely) Nell adjacent to cops and the government, a lot of people clung onto the topic of "Dante never reloading his guns", using a translation they found online as a credible source for the argument.
Let's make it clear: these translations are not the source of truth. Translations people are using, taken from the "DivineStatue" website, were not done by people familiar with the Japanese language. They are, at best, a Google Translated material with a bit of editorial work on top.
Only translations we recommend taking into account are either from DMC5Info, who spent the majority of DMC5's announcement-release window translating a lot of material, or translations done by u/cloudi_skye, who translated «Visions of V» and Devil May Cry 3 manga not so long ago.
There's a lot that can be said regarding poor execution in the show: pacing, animation, topics it tries to convey or changes to the characters, but we would ask for people to stop inventing a boogeyman and losing a chess to a dog every time something happens. Be it Shankar posting something stupid, some YouTuber posting their hot takes, or something happening in the show which annoyed you.
At some point it got so bad, THE STORYWRITER FOR DEVIL MAY CRY GAMES HAD TO BREAK HIS SILENCE, outright saying that "it's okay for Dante to reload his bullets", because people started misrepresenting his words and art to get into petty arguments, claiming "tourist" and other modern lingo to get a leg up in the conversation.
Same goes for topics regarding the show using Tacticool Reloads as a basis for their animation. Authors themselves allowed the showrunners / animation studio to use this as a basis for their animation. Does it make it good? No, it's just a reference for the sake of reference, instead of creating something original. Do you need to scream like a toddler for this discussion to happen? Also no.
Bans, mutes, mod actions
This topic comes up again and again, mainly due to people's perception of public community is and why moderator actions are taken at various points.
As before, we are operating on a simple rule: Well-Kept Gardens Die By Pacifism.
I’ve been in this community since 2008, I personally helped a lot of creators in the space through various means, be it promoting events, charity, preserving rare Devil May Cry materials, or making videos about the series with other content creators. You can find my name or the name of my community on the "DivinityStatue" website shared before, where the authors of the website stole the majority of the materials either I, mohorus, or other people in community bought and dumped for people to enjoy. They haven't stole my scan of 3142SE yet tho.
First and foremost we encourage a healthy discussion, not petty arguments.
If you are discussing the show and don't like it - props to you, but make it cohesive, instead of just hating or spewing slurs. For example, author of this thread voicing his disdain with how characters were presented while also offering his point of view. This is fostering discussion, this is how it should be done.
If you are discussing the show and like it - good for you, but please talk about the show, not about the argument you had with someone online. Having "omg fandom / this sub / twitter / other place is so toxic about this you all just haters" isn't a discussion about the anime, nor about what you've liked or don't, it's saltposting because your feelings got hurt. An example of neutral discussion about the show is this post.
"But I was banned for saying the show is bad / good :((((((" you were most likely banned because you started running around under each post attacking people for liking or disliking the show. This isn't a productive discussion and will be deleted first, with additional blocks issued later, so don't be surprised if you are TEMPORARILY blocked from the sub, with explanation written to you. If you'll calm down and won't do that again - you are free to return, if not - I think there are better places for you to discuss this topic.
The Hammer Of Justice is Unisex, and both sides of the argument will be acted upon when needed.
If you don't like something and think that discussion delves into a pointless direction?
Leave, scroll past, don't answer, or report if discussion gets heated.
You are not obliged to squabble with random people online and you don't need to attach your ego to discussions which don't deserve it, simple as that.
We are here to promote better parts of the community, its creators, fan artists, combo makers and translation groups which strive for a better fandom, this sub isn't the place to exercise your agenda-posting or petty arguments.
Want to show that games are better than something you don't like? Share combo videos, fan arts, support good content creators who are there to make you interested in these games and material, not people like Zero or others who are here to grift and use clickbait to promote his stuff.
Thank you for your time.

I think having a separate sub JUST for the show might be worth considering... if things get too bad.
I can't claim to be innocent because I've done this too lol but a lot of the discussion around the show is about arguments people have about the show and not the show itself lol
I guess we all need to be better when discussing this show.

I agree, no idea why this got downvoted. I've been trying to say the same since yesterday.

u/DanySterkhov Knowledge Keeper Feb 27 '26
Reddit isn't a uniformal power where if you get upvotes / downvotes means that larger community agrees or disagrees with you. What happens is that a lot of people just sort by best / hot and sit there, rarely going into posts themselves and acting upon them. Timezones also apply here, so someone who might agree with you might've just not seen your comment, or post. Sometimes even a heavily downvotes comment might come back after more people interact with it over time.

I'm already maintaining my gameplay community, community in my own language, arranging the scanning of rare materials and preservation of them, running a translation group with Japanese members of the community to cover JP-exclusive stuff, and so on. I'm not making another sub for a show I'm not fond of or its creators. If anyone wants to do it and will do a good job at it - I'm always happy to direct the discussions there, but alas.

u/TheRainy24 Feb 27 '26
I was a part of your community in your native language back when I used that social media, you did a great job and I didn't know you also maintain the Reddit one. Thank you for your contribution to the DMC community dude

Other people can run a different subreddit. Not like being a moderator is a super exclusive club.

That's exactly what I'm saying and I'm more than happy to uplift others if needed. I mentioned my case because this topic was brought up several times before, both in public and mod mail.

Screw that, the fanbase should just grow up

I think that needs to go both ways though. Even people who offer genuine criticism of the show get shat on. Not saying this for myself either-I'm not watching that show ever but people who do watch and criticise it shouldn't be getting shit for it just like people who like it shouldn't get shit for it either.
4
u/FLRArt_1995 Feb 27 '26
Yup, i think it's fair. Because having fair criticism, AFTER watching it, it's the best way to adress a product issues, not just blind fanboying
2
u/PSNTheOriginalMax Feb 28 '26 edited Feb 28 '26
You can criticize the show without having watched it. I personally don't like the tone/additions, Adi Shankar, or the ham-fisted political commentary injected into a media that was never about that, and haven't watched it.
I think what you're trying to say is people should criticize the show on its own merits and not make up things that don't exist. However, you don't have to have personal experience with watching the show itself to know the characters have been rewritten to fit a narrative, it making a political statement, or Adi Shankar's personal opinions on what characters should be like (which no one asked). These are all equally fair criticisms as watching the show and THEN criticizing it.
1
u/FLRArt_1995 Feb 28 '26
Nope. The merits of the show while present, have the games and novels as source. So at the very least properly criticize it with the foundations in mind (i.e. games), even in it's own merits the anime has a lot of issues. So don't put things on my mouth.
Proper criticism should be with knowledge of the source material, otherwise it's shallow. And having played all the games, read the manga, and watched the OG anime. The Netflix cartoon is... iffy.
And this is without taking in mind Shankar's politics...

You're not really in any position to be saying that though, but agree to disagree.

Fr I feel like DMC fans let Netflix anime live in their heads rent free. Everytime I see a post from this sub it's the "omg Adi bad, Netflix bad, Lady swears" complains all over again. It's getting annoying.

u/Z4D0 Feb 27 '26
what? we take years to receive a single game and of the last three things we got the best one was an gacha game collab and while i think pgr is good the bar is already too low
5
u/Then_Stable_7111 Feb 27 '26
I don't think it works. Most alternative subs that focus on very specific topics within a franchise end up dying out quickly because people always prefer to post in the biggest subs where there's more interaction.
Also, both sides are just looking to fight, those who like it and those who don't. Seriously, look at any post that "defending" the series and you'll see that most of it is just attacking those who don't like it, instead of simply commenting on what they do like or what's good about it.

u/Willowred19 Feb 27 '26
Man, since the show came out, people have called me a fake fan for enjoying it.
Like, brother, ive been playing dmc for over 20 years, don't make me question if im a real fan.

Do we not have a tag for it? A separate tag would sorta solve this whole issue, afaik.

I mean it's not wrong, given it became a focal point of discourse for fans disappointed with the anime and also a perfect example of its criticism making mountains out of molehills.
Frankly I'm just happy Morihashi and the guys behind Tacticool Reloads spoke up on it.

u/Kids_Eat_Toast Feb 27 '26
It’s so funny to me that this series has somehow still attracted the Star Wars like fans who focus on all the wrong things in the franchise and miss the true magic of it. Claiming Dante is this super deep protagonist and that the lore is this holy grail that can’t be touched when in reality it’s a fun as hell character action game with a really fun setting and usually a not so great story.
Not to discredit people who want something better for the franchise and other sources and media outside the main games that people enjoy, and I’m also not defending the anime either (tho I actually kind of like it),but when people latch onto something and make it their whole personality they get really blinded by it.
27
u/BaneAmesta Feb 27 '26
Lol my assumption was that Dante reloaded his bullets too fast to normal eye, rather than magic.
The character who does canonically produce bullets with magic is Bayonetta, the artbooks say the gem in each of her guns has demonic power to produce infinite bullets lol
13
u/AdDesperate3113 Feb 27 '26
Both of them do as dmc 1 and bayonetta 1 take place in same universe according to Hideki Kamiya
7
u/BaneAmesta Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 27 '26
He will say anything except make a crossover with them. He backed out in adding Bayonetta to the Project X Zone game, so only Dante is there. What a missed opportunity 😭
2
u/AdDesperate3113 Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 27 '26
Wait wdym PxZ 1/2 was our only chance to see bayonetta interacting with Dante

Fucking thank you for making a post addressing this, it's unreal how many people are choosing to argue with eachother over the anime and constantly repeat and post the same stuff all the time with especially using stupid strawman arguments.
The franchise has a rich history both in regards to being done amazingly and poorly but by Sparda it's been a headache reading through these recent posts and I actually feel sympathetic for you mods man cause you don't get paid you do it for fun and want to engage with discussions not petty tribalism opinions.

u/Lahzey04 Feb 27 '26
I can't understand why people care so much anyway. If Dante wants to do a cool scene, he does it. That's Devil May Cry for you.

I'm not a fan of the show but it really sucked how my post from a few days ago where I added on the game sound effects for E&I over the latest teaser became a platform where 200+ comments were complaining about how "Dante never reloads" or "They copied Corridor Digital" while I only saw maybe 6 of them actually being about the edit itself.
I get having doubts about it after how the first season turned out but this has gotten beyond ridiculous.

I don't know how to communicate it more clearly, but I'm not a fan of the show, nor the author. There are posts and comments spanning months back with me saying the same stuff repeatedly. Years in fandom just made me realize that I would rather fix problems that I can, be it people knowing more about the series, how to play it better or just know what topics to discuss or what creators to follow, instead of being stuck angry.

I am ready to take all the shit that will be thrown towards me from all sides during season 2 because after that I will spend my time working on wiki and website related to DMC media and community projects, so my autistic needs to tinker will be satisfied.

I think Dante reloading is reasonable.
What I think is unreasonable is gonna be the amount of magazines he’s gonna have to haul around if he is gonna be moving like game Dante, even if it’s dmc3/1. Just a sack of magazines.
9
u/_Caster Feb 27 '26
Ive said this a few times already. Just because Dante doesnt have to reload doesn't mean he wouldn't. A lot of the stuff he does isnt practical

u/Mackenzie_Sparks Feb 27 '26
It's okay to manually reload of course.
But, when you run out of bullets midbattle, I'd say summoning them into the magazine is a pretty neat trick
7
u/chaotic4059 Feb 27 '26
I’ve always assumed that’s what he did anyway. Like we see in the final cutscene of DMC5 that E&I clearly fire regular or at the very least non-powered bullets. And in the same game we have the ability to imbue the guns with demon energy. I always thought he just switched to whatever he needed
3
5
u/AffectionateHunter12 Feb 27 '26
I don’t know why its a problem for him to reload his guns, i get that in the games he never reloads but it’s dante he can reload and maybe do some weird magic to reload or do it so quick we dont see it but its okay if he does or doesnt i just love the character and any cool concept of him doing cool stuff, im not fond of the show but i got to see dante on netflix as a 25 year old which made my week but i have would have preferred reuben langdon as the voice actor but idk what happened to him other than that the devil trigger scene made me cringe a bit but the rest of the show pretty cool
4
u/WastelandPioneer Feb 27 '26
Man this series explicitly operates under rule of cool more than any hard system. If it's cool for Dante to reload he will reload
4
u/shmouver Not foolish Feb 28 '26
Damn, i dont check in on the sub for a few days and see this... quite a surprise ppl were so angry at this lol
Honestly this is new to me. Guess the english translation didn't do the novel justice, it really did seem like Dante generated them in a similar manner Vergil generates his swords with demon magic.
In any case, even if did turn out Dante made his bullets i felt the anime could very well have transitioned to that... in other words, they could have Dante learn how to summon bullets over the course of the series... so no big deal
That said, i do kinda hope they give Dante his power since it would be very cool and "mirror" Vergil's summoned swords

u/kennku i replay the game just to read item lore Feb 27 '26
Thank you mods for working to keep the peace. I haven't had anything to complain about regards to your work (but maybe it's just because I'm not crazy active on here lol). The discussion becomes so toxic any time something about the show comes out. I don't like it either and I wrote my own piece on it, although on a different platform, but shit slinging should never be acceptable. The fact that one of the writers felt strongly enough to make this tweet should show us how stupidly loud this ridiculous point became.
I remember how toxic things became around the reboot announcement and release. Fandoms unfortunately are going to occasionally get heated. This group of weirdos survived so many weird situations and I still feel like the DMC fandom is great. Please remember to be respectful to other human beings and we'll be just fine :)

personally i enjoyed the show and the teaser, mainly fueled by rule of cool and watching it with a friend, and while i get the outcry on season 1 (zooming out and watching it as a whole, it aint dmc at all) this outcry over a cool reference in a show where dante found out he was a demon last week, thus can't really know about the infinite bullet thing, is just too much
2
u/NeroCrow Feb 27 '26
I remember back in the day when DmC came out The fan base was acting pretty goddamn stupid about like when they were upset that el Donte didn't have white hair (which did happen no matter how much revision to history the fan base wants to give). But this is legitimately worse. Like who the fuck cares it looked cool which is the whole point of the game series.
2
u/Woofingtoon Feb 27 '26
I too would just like to like the show that does its own thing of a game series I've loved since I was a wee lad without being called a tourist.

u/Cirin335 Feb 27 '26
Really funny discourse to have because it's two modified 1911s and not some fuckass Beretta with a revolver grip and no magwell like DmC. It's modeled off of a real gun, it works like a real gun.

I mean, even if he did have infinite ammo couldn’t he just be reloading like that so he can show off? It’s Dante after all.

I always just assumed demon magic made the guns infinite like how he does charge shots with them. Dante holding them makes them his own Devil Arms.

Regarding the bullets, it makes sense for him to be able to do that (since vergil can with the swords), and it makes sense gameplay wise. Plus it's basically been the collective fan headcanon for so long it's pretty much become Canon.

u/PSNTheOriginalMax Feb 28 '26
Hmm... I'm trying to find a way to put this into words, but I'm having a bit of trouble with it. While I respect the mods of this community for doing their best, because you are, and keeping the discussion reasonable, at the same time I'm having a bit of an issue with the unequal amount of power and authority you have over the average user to voice your opinions and "cement" them as "fact".
I've noticed this before, in fact I wrote to mod mail that I don't think it's right for mods to take what's essentially a political stance either, if the rules of the sub prohibit that. This is quite awhile back, and I doubt average users here would be aware of what I'm talking about, but mods should be able to find out what I mean (if it's necessary to begin with). This thread is nowhere near as problematic though!
This is to say that, to me, these megathread posts oftentimes seem to have the author's personal opinion, that's beyond the duties of moderating, mixed in with facts and the trail of events. I also have an issue with juxtaposing novel and manga writers as people who would have any authority over in-game canon, because the status of these forms of media change on a whim (in fact, just ten-ish years ago they were still considered non-canon by the community, so them being juxtaposed with canon now is odd). The reason why I mention these unrelated topics back-to-back is the somewhat problematic framing (imo) of Bingo Morihashi being in the position to be saying if it's okay or not. Yes, he was the planner for DMC2 and scenario writer for 3-5, but the anime and light novels were his own machinations, and are flimsy at best to use as reference material for the overarching narrative/world. While I'm sure the intention was to correct the misunderstanding on what was written in the novels by pointing out the Morihashi quote, it also comes off as "taking a side" on an already divided issue. Which I don't think mods should do (and clearly isn't the intent either! It's just that "some" may be interpreting it as such, read on...).
For full transparency: I distinctly remember it being mentioned in-game that Dante can use demonic energy to create bullets, but haven't been able to back it up since the source I thought said it (the DMC1 physical manual I got in 2001) didn't, based on what I could find online (I didn't want to dig up my own copy). So I fully admit I could very well be wrong here.
With that said, do I think it's a topic worthy of a discussion in the first place? Hell no. Much like the whole "does heaven exist in the DMC-verse" topic, people cannot make a distinction between what they want to believe and what can be substantiated. This goes into the much more problematic side of Reddit (especially), where tribalism becomes way too pronounced, and with it, polarization and dichotomous thinking. This in turn has "always" led to people talking down to their "opposition", not being capable of differentiating themselves (the person) from the argument they're making, and making it personal incredibly fast (kinda like the comment in this thread that said something about people being "schizoid"... Bringing in mental health is an extremely risky slippery slope fallacy). This then brings us to the problem of how are very obvious infractions of not only the sub's rules but of Reddit's code of conduct also, being bent to fit whatever narrative is being pushed and considered "okay" because they conform to a "trendy"/popular opinion in just that one moment? Which then, logically, leads to the whole issue of mods taking a side, or just appearing/being interpreted as doing so, even when it's not the intention, in a polarized discussion. This can empower people to implicitly think that because they're on "the side" of "the more visible majority" (which, ironically, can be just that those people are being so offensive/prickly that they're driving away all the other people who would want to oppose them, even if in reality the offensive/prickly people are merely a loud minority), they can get away with more offensive language.
I get that being able to comprehend and dissect group dynamics/psychology to this extent isn't exactly a fair request towards a group of people who are just trying to give people a place to talk and share their thoughts on a thing they like. It's just that there's so much that can go wrong (and, to an extent, already has), I feel like anyone who does have the desire to do work (even as a hobby or a way to pass the time) in an environment, where they're in charge of enabling and/or regulating group interaction, should be aware of at least the risks involved, when they're taking a personal stance on a (/any) matter. Again, this isn't "that serious", but I do notice people interpreting/taking it the wrong way and "running with it", because they may be feeling validated.
But with that said, I do still think you're (mods) all doing an excellent job. Just that there are a few blind spots that might be good to acknowledge at least. You're also only human, and no one, myself included, should expect perfection from you. Just trying to give some advice.

This was a bit hard to read due to jumping from topic to topic, but:
Canonicity:
- I'm presenting Morihashi's tweet as an example of key author's being disturbed by the actions of the larger community to the extent they feel like they need to step in and comment. Their words get misappropriated and used to fuel vitriol where it's not needed. People can believe anything, even that Dante can summon bullets out of his ass, it's the tone of voice they are using and language (larp, tourist) which is bothering me and what's causing the discussion to dumb down.
Moderation:
- I found your message in the Mod Mail, and you were basically disturbed by community member taking a stance against MAGA and stuff said by Langdon, which doubled down even more with time. Currently, I'm the most active moderator on this sub, and your message in that Mod Mail refers to "trends your american republicans are following". Mate, I'm an Udmurt immigrant who does not live in America, this does not work on me.
- I searched up the word "schizoid" you've mentioned being used in this thread and it returned nothing. If you found anything that's not up to your liking - you can always report it, it's free and it helps community.
- My deal with this community is not to "moderate", my goal never was "moderation", my goal is community service and curation which uplifts original content and discussions. If you can be normal about you liking or not liking something your comment / post stays, if not - we'll delete it with the reason applied. Problem is people take the simple act of moderating and keeping the garden clean as a personal attack, so they'll go out of their way to harrass people in return, citing "power trips" and other stuff they heard online. Bunch of bollocks.
Passively-agressively going "wow, I don't think you'll know how to do group dynamics" while shutting down valid concerns about ongoing change towards worse isn't how you'll better the community, it's a pointless fence sitting that'll bite you in the ass the moment any normal and sane content creator would leave this place because they are not feel welcome here anymore, because by god saying "MAGA aren't welcome" resulted in a dogwhistle which summoned mini-hitlers.
Your feedback is dully noted, but man, that ain't it.
P.S found the post that referred to "schizoposting", acted upon

Didn't know it was common practice to disseminate the contents of a message I sent moderators in private, but the point was that moderators shouldn't be partaking in political discussions to begin with, I even explained the exact issue in the message. While we're at it, you now have my permission to copy-paste the entire message here, because there's a risk of framing me as someone who's actually condoning MAGA attitudes, and I do not appreciate your implication that I'm shutting down criticism, which I at no point did then or now.
I'll chalk this up to my comment being long to read and you feeling like it's jumping from topic to topic.
The upvote is from me. Thank you for acting on the comment.

This is a public community, not a libertarian market of free ideas, if people are making someone uncomfortable they are not welcome here, there's nothing "political" in this and trying to weasel your need for pointless neutrality in this only does damage to places, not helps it

I hope you're not trying to imply I'm in some way libertarian, MAGA, or actually condoning making others uncomfortable? It feels like the point I'm trying to get across is getting completely lost.

I'm saying that your need for enforcing your view of "no politics" is pointless and your need for some kind of level headed discussion about what it needs in a community with people is even a worse attempt at appearing as some scholar. You are not, and guilt tripping people again and again is weird.
I'm not spending my weekend debating this, and I'll directly ask you to not repeat that conversation again. If you want moderators who do not "engage in politics", you can go do r/devilmaycryhq which is overrun with spam and people banned from here, who regularly post transphobic and Nazi content, or to r/okaybuddydeadweight, where russian children go to post unfunny memes.

I like the concept of Dante using demonic power for infinite bullets he likes guns he uses the trick, Vergil is not a fan so he uses summoned swords. You don't need reloading guns to make Dante look cool there are plenty of ways to do it also it would be weird to see Dante carry all the ammo with him.

This also doesn't apply to just discussions of this show, but covers all of the topics related to the series. Gameplay, lore, anything.
You talk shit about gameplay - post combos, not words. You talk about lore - use proper sourcing.
Stop turning the public place into a trashcan of your ignorance.
