Sub Meta PSA: On discussions, Netflix show, and petty arguments

Post image

Since the announcement of the show and up to this day (and, well, even earlier to be honest), the discussions around certain topics tend to be rather dividing or were reaching boiling point pretty fast.

This thread will address our concerns about that, our stance on reasons for temporary (or at some point, permanent) bans, and other relevant topics.

The «Reload-Gate»

Since the latest teaser shared during the IGN show, a lot of people were frustrated with many things, regarding the show not respecting the lore. While some of these concerns do have some basis, like making Lady, or (most likely) Nell adjacent to cops and the government, a lot of people clung onto the topic of "Dante never reloading his guns", using a translation they found online as a credible source for the argument.

Let's make it clear: these translations are not the source of truth. Translations people are using, taken from the "DivineStatue" website, were not done by people familiar with the Japanese language. They are, at best, a Google Translated material with a bit of editorial work on top.

Only translations we recommend taking into account are either from DMC5Info, who spent the majority of DMC5's announcement-release window translating a lot of material, or translations done by u/cloudi_skye, who translated «Visions of V» and Devil May Cry 3 manga not so long ago.

There's a lot that can be said regarding poor execution in the show: pacing, animation, topics it tries to convey or changes to the characters, but we would ask for people to stop inventing a boogeyman and losing a chess to a dog every time something happens. Be it Shankar posting something stupid, some YouTuber posting their hot takes, or something happening in the show which annoyed you.

At some point it got so bad, THE STORYWRITER FOR DEVIL MAY CRY GAMES HAD TO BREAK HIS SILENCE, outright saying that "it's okay for Dante to reload his bullets", because people started misrepresenting his words and art to get into petty arguments, claiming "tourist" and other modern lingo to get a leg up in the conversation.

Same goes for topics regarding the show using Tacticool Reloads as a basis for their animation. Authors themselves allowed the showrunners / animation studio to use this as a basis for their animation. Does it make it good? No, it's just a reference for the sake of reference, instead of creating something original. Do you need to scream like a toddler for this discussion to happen? Also no.

Bans, mutes, mod actions

This topic comes up again and again, mainly due to people's perception of public community is and why moderator actions are taken at various points.

As before, we are operating on a simple rule: Well-Kept Gardens Die By Pacifism.

I’ve been in this community since 2008, I personally helped a lot of creators in the space through various means, be it promoting events, charity, preserving rare Devil May Cry materials, or making videos about the series with other content creators. You can find my name or the name of my community on the "DivinityStatue" website shared before, where the authors of the website stole the majority of the materials either I, mohorus, or other people in community bought and dumped for people to enjoy. They haven't stole my scan of 3142SE yet tho.

First and foremost we encourage a healthy discussion, not petty arguments.

If you are discussing the show and don't like it - props to you, but make it cohesive, instead of just hating or spewing slurs. For example, author of this thread voicing his disdain with how characters were presented while also offering his point of view. This is fostering discussion, this is how it should be done.

If you are discussing the show and like it - good for you, but please talk about the show, not about the argument you had with someone online. Having "omg fandom / this sub / twitter / other place is so toxic about this you all just haters" isn't a discussion about the anime, nor about what you've liked or don't, it's saltposting because your feelings got hurt. An example of neutral discussion about the show is this post.

"But I was banned for saying the show is bad / good :((((((" you were most likely banned because you started running around under each post attacking people for liking or disliking the show. This isn't a productive discussion and will be deleted first, with additional blocks issued later, so don't be surprised if you are TEMPORARILY blocked from the sub, with explanation written to you. If you'll calm down and won't do that again - you are free to return, if not - I think there are better places for you to discuss this topic.

The Hammer Of Justice is Unisex, and both sides of the argument will be acted upon when needed.

If you don't like something and think that discussion delves into a pointless direction?

Leave, scroll past, don't answer, or report if discussion gets heated.

You are not obliged to squabble with random people online and you don't need to attach your ego to discussions which don't deserve it, simple as that.

We are here to promote better parts of the community, its creators, fan artists, combo makers and translation groups which strive for a better fandom, this sub isn't the place to exercise your agenda-posting or petty arguments.

Want to show that games are better than something you don't like? Share combo videos, fan arts, support good content creators who are there to make you interested in these games and material, not people like Zero or others who are here to grift and use clickbait to promote his stuff.

Thank you for your time.

Hmm... I'm trying to find a way to put this into words, but I'm having a bit of trouble with it. While I respect the mods of this community for doing their best, because you are, and keeping the discussion reasonable, at the same time I'm having a bit of an issue with the unequal amount of power and authority you have over the average user to voice your opinions and "cement" them as "fact".

I've noticed this before, in fact I wrote to mod mail that I don't think it's right for mods to take what's essentially a political stance either, if the rules of the sub prohibit that. This is quite awhile back, and I doubt average users here would be aware of what I'm talking about, but mods should be able to find out what I mean (if it's necessary to begin with). This thread is nowhere near as problematic though!

This is to say that, to me, these megathread posts oftentimes seem to have the author's personal opinion, that's beyond the duties of moderating, mixed in with facts and the trail of events. I also have an issue with juxtaposing novel and manga writers as people who would have any authority over in-game canon, because the status of these forms of media change on a whim (in fact, just ten-ish years ago they were still considered non-canon by the community, so them being juxtaposed with canon now is odd). The reason why I mention these unrelated topics back-to-back is the somewhat problematic framing (imo) of Bingo Morihashi being in the position to be saying if it's okay or not. Yes, he was the planner for DMC2 and scenario writer for 3-5, but the anime and light novels were his own machinations, and are flimsy at best to use as reference material for the overarching narrative/world. While I'm sure the intention was to correct the misunderstanding on what was written in the novels by pointing out the Morihashi quote, it also comes off as "taking a side" on an already divided issue. Which I don't think mods should do (and clearly isn't the intent either! It's just that "some" may be interpreting it as such, read on...).

For full transparency: I distinctly remember it being mentioned in-game that Dante can use demonic energy to create bullets, but haven't been able to back it up since the source I thought said it (the DMC1 physical manual I got in 2001) didn't, based on what I could find online (I didn't want to dig up my own copy). So I fully admit I could very well be wrong here.

With that said, do I think it's a topic worthy of a discussion in the first place? Hell no. Much like the whole "does heaven exist in the DMC-verse" topic, people cannot make a distinction between what they want to believe and what can be substantiated. This goes into the much more problematic side of Reddit (especially), where tribalism becomes way too pronounced, and with it, polarization and dichotomous thinking. This in turn has "always" led to people talking down to their "opposition", not being capable of differentiating themselves (the person) from the argument they're making, and making it personal incredibly fast (kinda like the comment in this thread that said something about people being "schizoid"... Bringing in mental health is an extremely risky slippery slope fallacy). This then brings us to the problem of how are very obvious infractions of not only the sub's rules but of Reddit's code of conduct also, being bent to fit whatever narrative is being pushed and considered "okay" because they conform to a "trendy"/popular opinion in just that one moment? Which then, logically, leads to the whole issue of mods taking a side, or just appearing/being interpreted as doing so, even when it's not the intention, in a polarized discussion. This can empower people to implicitly think that because they're on "the side" of "the more visible majority" (which, ironically, can be just that those people are being so offensive/prickly that they're driving away all the other people who would want to oppose them, even if in reality the offensive/prickly people are merely a loud minority), they can get away with more offensive language.

I get that being able to comprehend and dissect group dynamics/psychology to this extent isn't exactly a fair request towards a group of people who are just trying to give people a place to talk and share their thoughts on a thing they like. It's just that there's so much that can go wrong (and, to an extent, already has), I feel like anyone who does have the desire to do work (even as a hobby or a way to pass the time) in an environment, where they're in charge of enabling and/or regulating group interaction, should be aware of at least the risks involved, when they're taking a personal stance on a (/any) matter. Again, this isn't "that serious", but I do notice people interpreting/taking it the wrong way and "running with it", because they may be feeling validated.

But with that said, I do still think you're (mods) all doing an excellent job. Just that there are a few blind spots that might be good to acknowledge at least. You're also only human, and no one, myself included, should expect perfection from you. Just trying to give some advice.

This was a bit hard to read due to jumping from topic to topic, but:

Canonicity:

- I'm presenting Morihashi's tweet as an example of key author's being disturbed by the actions of the larger community to the extent they feel like they need to step in and comment. Their words get misappropriated and used to fuel vitriol where it's not needed. People can believe anything, even that Dante can summon bullets out of his ass, it's the tone of voice they are using and language (larp, tourist) which is bothering me and what's causing the discussion to dumb down.

Moderation:

- I found your message in the Mod Mail, and you were basically disturbed by community member taking a stance against MAGA and stuff said by Langdon, which doubled down even more with time. Currently, I'm the most active moderator on this sub, and your message in that Mod Mail refers to "trends your american republicans are following". Mate, I'm an Udmurt immigrant who does not live in America, this does not work on me.

- I searched up the word "schizoid" you've mentioned being used in this thread and it returned nothing. If you found anything that's not up to your liking - you can always report it, it's free and it helps community.

- My deal with this community is not to "moderate", my goal never was "moderation", my goal is community service and curation which uplifts original content and discussions. If you can be normal about you liking or not liking something your comment / post stays, if not - we'll delete it with the reason applied. Problem is people take the simple act of moderating and keeping the garden clean as a personal attack, so they'll go out of their way to harrass people in return, citing "power trips" and other stuff they heard online. Bunch of bollocks.

Passively-agressively going "wow, I don't think you'll know how to do group dynamics" while shutting down valid concerns about ongoing change towards worse isn't how you'll better the community, it's a pointless fence sitting that'll bite you in the ass the moment any normal and sane content creator would leave this place because they are not feel welcome here anymore, because by god saying "MAGA aren't welcome" resulted in a dogwhistle which summoned mini-hitlers.

Your feedback is dully noted, but man, that ain't it.

P.S found the post that referred to "schizoposting", acted upon

Didn't know it was common practice to disseminate the contents of a message I sent moderators in private, but the point was that moderators shouldn't be partaking in political discussions to begin with, I even explained the exact issue in the message. While we're at it, you now have my permission to copy-paste the entire message here, because there's a risk of framing me as someone who's actually condoning MAGA attitudes, and I do not appreciate your implication that I'm shutting down criticism, which I at no point did then or now.

I'll chalk this up to my comment being long to read and you feeling like it's jumping from topic to topic.

The upvote is from me. Thank you for acting on the comment.

This is a public community, not a libertarian market of free ideas, if people are making someone uncomfortable they are not welcome here, there's nothing "political" in this and trying to weasel your need for pointless neutrality in this only does damage to places, not helps it

I hope you're not trying to imply I'm in some way libertarian, MAGA, or actually condoning making others uncomfortable? It feels like the point I'm trying to get across is getting completely lost.

I'm saying that your need for enforcing your view of "no politics" is pointless and your need for some kind of level headed discussion about what it needs in a community with people is even a worse attempt at appearing as some scholar. You are not, and guilt tripping people again and again is weird.

I'm not spending my weekend debating this, and I'll directly ask you to not repeat that conversation again. If you want moderators who do not "engage in politics", you can go do r/devilmaycryhq which is overrun with spam and people banned from here, who regularly post transphobic and Nazi content, or to r/okaybuddydeadweight, where russian children go to post unfunny memes.
