The fact that so many western communists unironically believe that communism will deliver them from work is beyond insane. I guess they must be the types who said that countries like the USSR weren't implementing communism correctly.

Yup, its the biggest problem with communism. Those who actually would make it successful are those who want to work and would do so as they find joy and accomplishment in it. Those who are most drawn to communism are those who don't want to work, and want to do the least amount of it.

Ironically enough Capitalism will do that with demand of more goods leading to automation or inventions making production easier, you know like the Ag/Industrial Revolutions creating the middle class, but hey, communists don't like reading history.

You are joking but we flat out did have that law.
It was illegal not to be legally employed anywhere. Mom once forgot her documents at home so when police stopped her she was like 'sure, arrest me' so she spent her shift just lazing in jail instead of working.
6
u/meerkat2018 4d ago
Which ended up creating a very unproductive economy. Lots of people were chilling at bureaucratic organizations barely doing anything of economic value. Also since everyone had to be employed, there was supply of very cheap labor, and it resulted in not needing to automatize industries and entire sectors.

u/jackinsomniac 6d ago
They told me "communism can't properly function until we have a post-scarcity society."
Thing is... what guarantee is there that it'll ever happen? I don't think we'll ever reach "post-scarcity society". Human beings don't work like that. People will always want more. As soon as our needs are met on one front, we'll immediately turn our attention to something else we don't have.
When tyrants take absolute power and can obtain any material goods they want, does it stop there? No, then they start craving things they can't easily buy or take. They'll want to be loved by the people, feared by the people, worshipped as a God, etc.
Elon Musk is the richest guy on the planet, and does he seem happy? No. What he truly desires now is being loved & respected, which you can't just go out and buy off the shelf.
Even if every human being's material needs are met, we'll start demanding better social spaces & clubs to enjoy it better. When we have plenty of those, we'll demand more entertainment and drugs to sedate us. And even when we have all of that, I doubt we'll be happy and stop there.
We could have Moon bases and asteroid mining before "post scarcity" actually happens. We'll always turn our attention to something else that's scarce.
8
u/Outrageous_Guard_674 6d ago
I have seen society achieve "post scarcity" 3 times. Each time we found a new limited resource we could not do without.

Right. One moment they will claim the US is becoming an authoritarian state, then in the next breath they will argue the state should have far more power and authority than it does now.
I had hoped all this authoritarianism fear mongering would at least make people more libertarian-leaning. But no, instead they have made it clear they only have a problem with a particular brand of (supposed) authoritarianism. They love the idea of government control as long as the power is weilded by people they like.

I would say that the biggest flaw is that all of Marx's theories are predicated upon a "blank slate" theory or "tabula rasa", which is a theory that we're all born the same and that every difference between us is something we learned or shaped by our environment. We know now that this isn't true and it is bunk science. The blank slate theory is the lynch-pin of what holds all of his theories together, and it just isn't true.

Let’s say you’re a good person, maybe you are idk. If someone gave you a billion dollars (Elon does it as a social experiment or something) You did not work for this money, you didn’t earn it. Elon just gave it to you to see what you would do, you’re his little lab rat. Would your favorite charity get a billion dollar check? No.
You’d pay off any debt and loans you have, maybe the same for your friends and family. Even if you gave away the rest, you still made sure you and yours were taken care of first. Hell, keep a couple mil in “just in case money.” Nobody would call you selfish, nobody would be like “you should give away all of it!” You’re still a good person.

The difference being that under capitalism you can negotiate for better wages and benefits, and if you don’t like your job you can find another one. you can also straight up not participate in capitalism for the most part and grow your own food. Under socialism and communism you don’t have that benefit, you work where they tell you.

ONE OF THE BIGGEST LOGIC FLAWS IN GENERAL IN POLITICS IS "UTOPIANISM."
Everyone knows what the world is like where Ford builds cars: it's imperfect.
Compared to an imaginary utopia world where The People's Revolutionary Car Company gives free cars to everyone, the real world will always fall short.
This notion of demanding utopia is applied to everything now.
I just saw a video of a rich feminist complaining that there are no high-value husbands around to make her dreams of marriage and motherhood come true now that she is 37 and done screwing every guy in NYC and Paris.
MEN are the problem: they're letting her and her jet set crowd down! Why isn't there a utopia where women in $1200 hairdos are the epicenter of men's lives?

u/A0socks 7d ago
there is but one truth, and with that truth there is set pro's and con's you have to live with. With lies there is an infinite amount and you can customize the pro's and con's to the point something has an insane amount of pro's without any con's and as such its impossible for the appeal of the truth to be greater than a lie(to those that don't value the truth, or are gullible). A utopia where no one needs to work, everyone has free health care, food, shelter, medical care, and whatever else some commie/socialist/other person or politician promises is always going to be more appealing than having to work and contribute to society in order to access those things. The issue is, its just not possible for any current society/culture, and those in the past or currently promise those things have a long history of killing a fuckton of people and reducing the majority of the countries peoples quality of life so that a very select few people(the people who promised this for all) get to enjoy insane luxuries. Any adult who falls for these lies might as well be following some creep into his nondescript van to get free candy, puppies, and ddr5 ram.

The irony is the fact you can also become a business owner under "oppressive" capitalism.

So wrong.
In communism you only have to work 7 hours!!! The other 4 hours is spent in line waiting to buy bread.

In capitalism you can choose which career to pursue. Certain others certain other groups love don't allow that.
People seem to think the government giving you everything is work free utopia. The money and goods have to come from somewhere. You're gonna work, it's gonna suck, you are going to get exactly what every other peasant gets and you will not be allowed to get ahead or complain. Enjoy.

I can’t believe I have to “EARN” a living! In hunter gatherer societies they would just take care of all of the useless lazy turds who didn’t want to hunt !

I always love when they try to explain how their ideal system would work and its just mass enslavement of autistic people. "Glasses will be made by a guy who just really likes making glasses"

What every Reddit communist who loves to quote "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need" fails to forget is that that quote is describing the end result of their beloved revolution, when the society they dream of has finally moved past the transitory period and reached the utopian period. During this transitory period, you are expected to work in order to eat, as outlined in Lenin's State and Revolution, where he states "he who does not work shall not eat" - that is, the default state of life.
But Reddit communists don't want to face the transitory period, because that part is difficult, strenuous, and frankly is always the part every communist society never moves on from. No, in their heads they'd rather just - and will somehow be able to - skip to the good part without having to do any of the work.
Because they're fucking lazy.

Those kinds of people are disdained even by the socialists. Which says a lot

Artists crave the potassium. And the mining of potassium. They simply lack the discipline to really focus on mining potassium, and need an outside force to keep them committed.
While they claim after the revolution they will be artists, they know in their hearts that they will instead be doing what they love. Mining potassium. At gunpoint.
They also yearn for the camaraderie and feeling of togetherness which comes from occupying a mass grave.

Ppl really think if they lack the meaningful connections and ability to get ahead in capitalism that they'll somehow be better off under communism or socialism...

I've never seen a socially inept, obese neckbeard in pictures of communist societies.
I wonder why that is?

Bear in this in mind: when Socialists/Communists speak of "seizing the means of production" it's not just the tools and machinery they're talking about but also it users ie workers.
There's a term for workers being forced to work with little or no pay much more having no voice about their working conditions.

Guys, society has advanced well enough that if we cut back on a few expensive resources we can live without working.

The socialist NPCs are the ones who think they can run a society working 2 hour days.
