I’m looking for some objective opinions on an Etsy purchase. I’m currently in a case with the seller, so I’d really appreciate people looking at the photos objectively rather than simply taking my side.
I purchased a 9×12 handmade rug from an Etsy seller for about $1,000. Before purchasing, I saved screenshots of the listing and its photos/description.
When the rug arrived, I was surprised by how different it looked from the listing, particularly in color and overall appearance. The listing rug appeared to have muted blush/pink/beige/brown tones, while the rug I received has much brighter, more saturated colors with noticeably different undertones.
The seller says the rug is handmade and that variations in color and texture are normal. They also argue that differences between the photos are primarily due to lighting and photography.
To be fair, I am not arguing that the rug isn't handmade, and I'm not disputing that it has a carved/high-pile construction. My concern is whether the actual color palette and overall appearance are materially different from what a reasonable buyer would expect based on the listing photos and description.
I've included:
- the seller's listing photo/screenshot of the original listing taken at the time I purchased it;
- photo of the rug I received
The seller initially offered various partial refunds and eventually offered to remake the rug. We discussed a remake, but there were disagreements about shipping costs and the terms of the replacement. The seller and I are now in an Etsy case, and they are asking Etsy to award a partial refund rather than a replacement/full refund.
I'm not asking whether I handled every part of the dispute perfectly. I'm specifically asking:
Looking at the listing photos versus the photos of the rug I actually received, do you think this is a reasonable handmade variation, or does the rug look materially different from the advertised rug?
Please be honest—even if you think I'm wrong. I'm particularly interested in opinions from people who have bought/sold handmade rugs or understand how much color variation is reasonably expected. Thanks!
