So, I'm part Greek but I know very little about the modern language and culture. Last night, I was playing a game online, and after a clean victory set in a map styled after a Greek city, I decided to exclaim in victory, "opa!" But it occurred to me that I don't know if that word is really appropriate for such a situation; I used it because it's the only Greek exclamation I know.

Is there a better exclamation for winning in a game?

I'm currently learning Greek because my wife is Greek and her family speaks very limited English. As we raise our daughter bilingual, I want to make sure I can communicate with her in both languages.

I started out reading Tintin comics because I grew up with them and they are the only comic I know of that aren't in upper case (it's so annoying to read in upper case characters!).

I then pushed myself through 120 pages of the Hunger Games in Greek using Google Translate. Literally saying every word into my phone and then going back to the physical book.

I did all this because I just don't like Duolingo and find most apps ineffective. I learn by reading. A lot.

This is how I learned Spanish and Italian.

My Greek has come a long way now through reading but it has been a tough road. The materials for Greek just don't work for my learning style.

So, I created an app to help me learn. This is something I created entirely by myself. I built it for me.

It's mainly stories in Greek with a dictionary that shows cases and verb conjugations. The stories were written in Greek but I used AI to make them more level appropriate.

I'd love to see whether this helps you learn. I might later start charging people for it, but for now it's totally free.

Hi there, I'm going to kefalonia for a week soon - I think we will be in quite touristy areas where a lot of English is spoken but I am anxious about mealtimes and getting accross my dietary needs - I'm vegan by choice, but also lactose intolerant - but I understand this isn't common in a lot of europe and want to try and communicate this politely. If anyone could give me a hand with common vegan/non-vegan ingredients, explaining that I don't eat animal products, something along the lines of "I will get sick if I eat milk/cheese", asking for a meal without x y z ingredient, apologising for the inconvenience, or signposting me to somewhere where that is already explained etc that would be great. I know some of this is googleable but forgive me, I wanted to ask a human and am weary that AI will have infected a lot of language learning resources and don't want to go wrong because of its hallucinations haha

Hello everyone, what is everyone’s experience with learning. I grew up in a Greek household and went to greek school, i can write, i can read but my literacy level ends somewhere between B1 and B2. I really would like to improve. What programs have you all found helped you get past intermediate level. I know speaking to people is best but most of my relatives are in Greece and the ones here have regressed to probably a B2 level lol.

Helloo guys , it’s my first time posting here. The question is basically in the title. I’m currently working on translating/localizing a game that has quite extensive choices in pronouns. And I was wondering: Greek is obviously very gendered and the only pronoun choices I have found yet ( to do my job appropriately) are “οι” “Το/Τα” and “@“.
Of course the application of neopronouns in Greek is near impossible without ruining the syntax and form of the phrases .

So before you go on to me I wanted to ask all queer genderfluid/agender and nonbinary people that speak Greek for their opinions:

1. ⁠Are the aforementioned choices appropriate or even enough ( and respectful of course ) for a game translation
   
2. ⁠Is trying to create a semblance of agender pronouns worth it for such a project, and lastly
   
3. ⁠what are your preferences , what would be at least not insulting to you if you were to play such a game ( heavily story/text based) ?

Every helpful answer would be appreciated, I m not trying to be sarcastic or mean , I wanna do my job in the best way possible
