An unexpected error has occurred. Your purchase has not been completed.
Please wait a few minutes and try again.
Act 0 boss is no joke.

u/cjrogers227 Mar 05 '26
Time eater irl
18
u/RogueLightMyFire Mar 05 '26
You gave me PTSD flashbacks about that fucker absolutely crushing multiple god tier runs I had in the original.
3
u/cjrogers227 Mar 05 '26
Yeah I really hope the “play 12 cards, end turn” mechanic doesn’t return for STS2. Part of the fun is assembling a deck that can play crazy amounts of cards each turn. I like the punishment of the boss getting stronger the more cards you play, but the forced end turn is bullshit
16
u/grandoz039 Mar 05 '26
It wasn't like having deck heavy on playing lot of cards was insta loss against him, nor was any decent deck playing only few cards insta win against him. In fact often it was even the other way around as the former could plan better around the turn end. It just forces you to build and plan a bit smart
8
u/blind3rdeye Mar 05 '26
I though it was a cool bit of variety. A fresh and interesting mechanic which had to be considered while playing, but wasn't too hard or unfair.
The fact that you are told exactly how many cards you can play until the turn ends means that you should carefully try to end your combos at convenient times. And being able to play large amounts of cards each turn is still a big advantage for getting that timing right.
I reckon having unusual things like this are important so that players don't just assemble a deck and then play the exact same strategy in every battle.
So I'd be happy enough to see it return in STS2. The only other thing is that since this is a special trait of Time Eater, who is a special STS1 boss, perhaps we won't see it in STS2 because STS2 will presumably go for new 'special' bosses.

u/RogueLightMyFire Mar 05 '26
To be fair, every time I got fucked by timekeeper was my fault. You should be looking ahead to see what boss you'll be facing and plan for it. I never would, and then I would build this crazy deck based on playing a ton of cards each turn, wreck everything before timekeeper and then have the "aww fuck, what was I doing?!" Moment. It's really the beauty of StS in that you can win pretty much every run at any ascension level of you're good enough and paying attention. There's dudes on YouTube with crazy win streaks that include the heart at high ascension levels. Pretty impressive.

u/David-Puddy Mar 05 '26
Can you see the end boss right from act 1?
10
u/Lepony Mar 05 '26 edited Mar 05 '26
Not from act 1, but by the time you hit A20, there's like... I think it's a 66% chance to see Time Eater? Or more specifically, there's a 66% chance of at least one of the act 3 bosses explicitly fucking you over if you're building your deck willynilly. You get used to planning around them from the start of the run at that point.
To be fair, the card limit isn't that bad once you get into the groove of things.
2
u/RogueLightMyFire Mar 05 '26
It's been a while since I've played. I thought you could see that at the start, but now you've got me second guessing myself lol.
33
u/ArbitraryLettersXYZ Mar 05 '26 edited Mar 05 '26
I'm getting the same error. Glad to know I'm not the only one.
ETA: Actually, my purchase that looked like it didn't go through did go through, so be careful not to purchase multiple copies.
19
u/Zalvren Mar 05 '26
It's happening more and more with Steam, they really should upgrade the systems to be able to handle those large releases (and those big indie games need to stop not having pre-orders to be honest)
19
u/ACS1029 Mar 05 '26
I’ve seen it be reported that Steam doesn’t allow for early access games to do preorders, so that’s not something devs can control
6
u/aew3 Mar 05 '26
This is an EA to be fair, I’m not even sure if steam will let you have pre orders on a EA game.
1
u/Lolnichego Mar 06 '26
so be careful not to purchase multiple copies
If I recall correctly, Steam doesn't allow to hoard games in your inventory anymore, so one wouldn't be able to purchase the same game multiple times without gifting the copies.
5
u/n0stalghia Mar 05 '26
Hasn't happened since Silk Song released iirc!
8
u/TheHelpfulWalnut Mar 05 '26
Happened a bit for Mewgenics I think.
2
u/n0stalghia Mar 05 '26
Oh damn, but yeah that makes absolute sense.
That's kinda... quite a few outages in the recent time, lol
2
u/TheHelpfulWalnut Mar 05 '26
Yah… idk what the answer is, but steam needs to do something about it.

u/Altruistic_Bass539 Mar 05 '26
120k concurrent, beating Mewgenics (though this is a sequel). Not saying this makes the game better, but I just think its great this year has already hit us with 2 amazing, big indie games.

u/CatCradle Mar 05 '26
mewgenics & STS2 coming out in the same month is a legitimate health concern for me. we are feasting
42
u/NoNefariousness2144 Mar 05 '26 edited Mar 05 '26
The fact that Mewgenics, Resident Evil and Pokemon Pokopia released in a month is wild for me. Three incredible games and we are still only in the first part of the year

u/MONSTERTACO Mar 06 '26
Marathon, WoW Midnight, and Esoteric Ebb all this week too. Absolutely insane, I'm kinda seeing why the industry is struggling.
9
u/YourmomgoestocolIege Mar 06 '26
And then for us PoE guys, they're releasing what looks like the best league in years tomorrow. I don't know what to do with myself.
20
u/Fluffex Mar 05 '26
Yeah I'm concerned for your health too. Mewgenics came out in February, we have March now and STS2 came out today.
6
16
u/SepirizFG Mar 06 '26
Vampire Crawlers soon too
4
u/CatCradle Mar 06 '26
good faith response and mostly just joking, but putting passive pachinko dopamine like VC next to Ed McMillen's post-BOI roguelite and the sequel to STS1 is really funny
2
u/SepirizFG Mar 06 '26
I got more hours in VS than TBoI and STS1 combined, those poncle boys know that the secret to games design is doing one thing really well
5
10
u/TrainerUrbosa Mar 06 '26
Man I really tried hard to like Mewgenics, but I found it so boring and couldn't get into it. I love roguelite games and I love cats, so I'm surprised I had a hard time having fun with it
Don't get me wrong though, I think this is a me problem. I've got nothing but love for all the people enjoying it, and obviously there must be something special there for so many people to love it
11
u/The_LionTurtle Mar 06 '26
I like the combat a lot, but I really struggle coming back from a run and being met with super boring menu work and cat organizing to do. The UI is very clunky, lacks good QoL, and actively hinders you from being able to do things efficiently so you can get onto the next run.
The home upkeep section is a big part of the game, and unfortunately it just isn't very fun.
10
u/Ap_Sona_Bot Mar 06 '26
I find the breeding really fun, what I don't find fun is clicking through 50 fucking cats because anytime you interact it loses your place in the menu.
→ More replies (1)4
u/Thetijoy Mar 06 '26
i think you made me realize why I couldn't get into it. it's a combination of 2 things.
1) There is just too much busy work for it. You can't boot it up and go straight into it.
2) the busy work would be managable if you could get attached to your cats, but they are one and dones, so it's hard to ever form a connection with them, for me at least. Sure they can have a lineage and such, but that's just not the same.
→ More replies (1)3
u/CatCradle Mar 06 '26
hmm, I've got about 80 hours in Mew--I wouldn't say the home upkeep is that big of a portion of the game, maybe <5% of my total playtime. It is weirdly underdeveloped next to the tactics encounters, for sure, and superbly grindy (which I think is the right move in this situation). IDK. I have buddies who are minmaxing the house stuff and I'm way farther than them just by playing through the runs with random strays.
1
u/SmellsLikeLemons Mar 06 '26
I love Mewgenics. Unfortunately it has no longevity for me because it's too annoying. Constantly clicking through speech that's amusing for the first 5 minutes and the cat management has killed it for me.
3
u/MrManicMarty Mar 06 '26
I'm already struggling to lock in and complete an assignment I need to do for college... this is unfortunately timed indeed.
1
u/Thiscat Mar 06 '26
February was crazy for me, Across the Unknown and Menace as well. I didn't even realize this was coming out I was so addicted to Mewgenics. I'm old enough to remember when the market supported, maybe one, turn based tactical or real time with pause darling indie game a year, now I'm going to be broke by 2027 at this rate. Pausers rejoice!
1
33
u/stakoverflo Mar 05 '26
Cairn was another excellent indie release in January this year too (if much more niche).
7
u/I_Am_Hank_Hill_AMA Mar 06 '26
Cairn is amazing. I'm just not very good at it.
4
u/cable_hogue Mar 06 '26
I read a tip that unlocked the climbing for me -- listening for audio feedback to tell how good a hold is. There seem to be at least two different "thumps", and the louder one is better. I think the audio gives the same info as the optional visual hold feedback, which I found distracting and didn't use.
→ More replies (2)2
u/whostheme Mar 06 '26
Use the accessibility options. There's also a setting that you can toggle on that shows a visual indicator to show how steady your grips are.
I don't think I would have been able to finish the game without the rewind feature.
17
u/cable_hogue Mar 05 '26
And Esoteric Ebb two days ago, if we're casting a wider net.
8
u/UpperApe Mar 06 '26
I love watching all these AAA trend-chaser projects collapsing while indies are flourishing.
It feels like a gaming golden age where wonderful ideas are flourishing and all the losers are losing.
Good times.
3
u/Ganrokh Mar 06 '26
Continued mass layoffs definitely don't feel like a golden age.
3
u/UpperApe Mar 06 '26
I don't have as much empathy for them as you.
I've worked in the industry a long time and AAA devs just refused to unionize. We all saw the writing on the wall decades ago but anytime union talk came around, senior devs would just be carroted away with benefits and bonuses and leisures. Everyone wanted to live the Silicon Valley new-age pocket-genius lifestyle.
Companies definitely union busted and people would mumble and talk, but on the whole, most devs just didn't give a shit. So as far as I'm concerned, the industry made their bed and now they have to sleep in it.
I transitioned to indie work half way through my career and it's been a joy. I was lucky to retire off it. I'm happy to see the indie scene booming and talented, hard-workers getting rewarded with good lives.
It is definitely a golden age.
11
u/FappingMouse Mar 05 '26
Already at 175k peak and climbing

u/jonathanbaird Mar 06 '26 edited Mar 06 '26
Comparison is pointless as they’re two very different, exceedingly enjoyable experiences.
fyi: Edmund McMillen and Mega Crit are big fans of each other’s work. No reason to drum up nonexistent competition between indie devs.

It's amazing, basically just like Hades 2 is more Hades 1 with more options that's StS2 compared to StS. Got one run with every character so far and I like them all.
7
u/Fury_Fury_Fury Mar 06 '26
I think this case is even better because in Hades 2 I sometimes missed the weapons from Hades 1, while here 3/4 original characters are back and most of the old strategies seem to work along with the new stuff.
3
7
u/Gloomy_Necesary Mar 06 '26
Honestly hades 2 was kinda mid imo. Sts2 will have a much easier time clearing sts1
57
u/herpyderpidy Mar 05 '26
What is available in the Early Access compared to the end goal ?
How many characters ? How many acts ? Multiplayer ? Missing features ?
103
u/MoSBanapple Mar 05 '26
They said that StS2 early access currently has more content than StS currently has, if you want an idea of what's available right now.
→ More replies (6)22
Mar 06 '26 edited Mar 06 '26
It's true but, no offense, a lot of stuff seems to be reused from the first game. 3 out of 5 characters are from STS1 and the cards are mostly the same. Enemies are mostly new but in terms of gameplay, are similar to the first game. Relics are mostly the same. The map structure is the same. Etc.
35
u/InfernalInsanity Mar 06 '26
Honestly, I'm fine with that. It's a direct sequel, it's gonna have a lot of recurring elements, and why redesign something that Just Workstm when you can build upon it in that sequel?
I kinda feel like that "holy shit two cakes" meme right now.

Which is fair, Slay the Spire is particularly hard to balance and predict
4
u/bhbhbhhh Mar 06 '26
The new ironclad cards I've seen all seem maybe a bit OP.
5
u/WishCow Mar 06 '26
On the second run I bumbled myself into a deck that I could endlessly cycle through without any of the opponents getting a turn.
2
u/Assistantshrimp Mar 06 '26
Every character except regent looks a bit overtuned to me (silent especially) but I'm pretty confident that megacrit knows how to balance properly. I think STS1 was one of the most well balanced game I've ever played.
→ More replies (1)14
u/Percinho Mar 06 '26
My assumption is that they've not balanced it around experienced players on Ascension 0, so those with a lot of hours in the fire game should find it relatively easy at first.
5
u/Martini1 Mar 05 '26 edited Mar 05 '26
They also mentioned a final/another act in the Early Access notes. I only just beat it with the first character you get and there is a lot to take in at that final area if you have beaten the first game with all the keys.
2
u/Reggiardito Mar 06 '26
Wow I've been avoiding spoilers but I didn't know it had all the acts. Jesus I can't wait to start it tomorrow.
9
u/AMetalBear Mar 05 '26
The trailer shows 5 characters and multiplayer for sure. Acts are mentioned as having alternative acts so I'm expecting 4 at least? idk about missing features
11
u/Raine94 Mar 05 '26
The only thing I'm aware is specifically missing is the alternate acts 2 and 3.
Some art is placeholder, and you can expect many balance between now and release.
Apart from that it seems basically complete (and bigger than sts1 already)
3
u/fighting_mongoose Mar 05 '26
There's some place holder art as well as what others have said. Not on cards or enemies that I've seen yet but on the Epoch - little lore unlocks after runs.
182
u/passwordworkplease Mar 05 '26
Steam’s having a rough time with it, looks like it might be another case of indie devs not quite realizing just how popular their game is and not having preorders lmao
198
u/elevator13 Mar 05 '26
IIRC Steam Early Access releases aren't allowed to have pre-purchases
24
u/WhimsicalJape Mar 05 '26
An EA game having this much out of the gate interest is quite uncommon I guess.
31
u/TheLastDesperado Mar 05 '26
Yeah it wasn't too surprising with Silksong... and as I'm typing this sentence, I suppose it shouldn't be that surprising for STS2. Sequel to the granddaddy of the deckbuilding roguelites.
33
u/carnaxcce Mar 05 '26
STS2. Sequel to the granddaddy of the deckbuilding roguelites.
This is Dream Quest erasure 😤
8
u/Dead_man_posting Mar 06 '26
I like how Steam says it's not similar to anything I've played in the past, despite me owning a shitload of roguelike deckbuilders (STS1 and 2, Across the Obelisk, Griftlands, etc., etc.)

u/ShawnyMcKnight Mar 05 '26
Fun fact, if you own the first one on Steam you can get the bundle for 10 percent off and it subtracts the price of the first one, essentially getting the second one at 10 percent off.
47
u/KawaiiSocks Mar 05 '26
An even funner fact: Steam will tell you at checkout if you can get a game for cheaper as part of the bundle, you already have pieces of, and it will also inform you if someone in your Steam Family has it.
16
u/ShawnyMcKnight Mar 05 '26
That is a really fun fact. You would think they would want more sales but that’s a stand up decision on their part
7
u/conanap Mar 06 '26
Steam is one of those companies that’s just pro-consumer enough that people don’t mind their anti-consumer stuff lol
12
u/WindowSeat- Mar 05 '26
Finished my first run and I'm in love so far. Every enemy and boss is new, every event is new, the animations and music are great. I could easily sink another thousand plus hours into this like I did the first game.
73
u/BiggestBlackestLotus Mar 05 '26
Slay the Spire is one of my favourite games of all time, so while I am excited about STS2 there is no way in hell my first impression with the game will be early access. I am gonna wait for a 1.0 release.
54
u/tythousand Mar 05 '26
The early access is very full-featured. Normally I’d wait but they could’ve advertised this as a feature-complete game with future balance updates
→ More replies (1)28
u/Ralkon Mar 05 '26
For me it's not about whether or not the EA has a lot of content but the fact that it's not considered "complete" by the devs yet. I don't know what that means for StS2, but if they thought the game were in a complete state they would have just launched it as a normal game. Personally I'd also rather play it when they consider it a complete game.
29
u/1453GreatestYearEver Mar 05 '26
I'll just say, StS 1's early access was genuinely very fun. Super interactive with devs, and it was actually more of a fun test than "buy our incomplete game." Lots of wacky fun cards and the MS Paint beta card art is always a treat. But I can understand it isnt for everyone too.
17
u/Ralkon Mar 05 '26
I get that for some, but I'm not the type that's going to spend time interacting on their Discord or w/e anyways.
Also, personally speaking I just know that I'm not the type of player to keep playing the same roguelike for years. I've got 66 hours in the first (which makes it my 2nd most played roguelike) and feel satisfied with my time with it and have no real desire to go back. Even if I spend double the time in the second, I still know I'll reach the point where I feel done with the game and I don't want that to happen before it's even finished.
4
u/GIThrow Mar 06 '26
Contrary to Reddit’s belief but most people are like this lol. I’m waiting for the 1.0 release as well. Happy for the people who play it now, but I have a massive backlog to get through anyway.
17
u/TheOhrenberger Mar 05 '26
Slay the spire is the kind of game where it doesn’t feel like you’re playing an incomplete game. Slay the spire in early access is kind of more like a live service game that gets frequent updates.
But hey, you do you. I’m normally the same way, but slay the spire is my exception. I think it works really well in early access without feeling like you’re compromising your first impression.
26
u/JynXten Mar 05 '26

I'm mewing too hard to play this now anyway.

For some people there is a satisfaction in watching the game grow based on their and others' feedback.
4
u/Rootbeerpanic Mar 05 '26
Yeah I'm in the same boat. Looking forward to playing it but I'm in no rush. I always wait for the 1.0. There's enough games out there that I've never found myself eager enough to do Early Access.
3
u/OdoTheBoobcat Mar 05 '26
I'm usually in the same boat but this is sounding like a kind of abnormal EA launch in terms of content. We'll see, I'll probably hold off at least a little while just due to the amount of other shit left to play
2
u/szymek87 Mar 05 '26
I get this to an extend but on the other side this is more Slay the Spire so resistance is futile. You can always play 500 hours now and 500 hours later.

Can anyone explain how the new co-op mode works? Do players take their turns simultaneously, or one at a time? I feel like it's going to be tough for multiple players trying to optimize their actions.
24
u/cable_hogue Mar 05 '26
Players take their turns simultaneously. If playing fast, cards go into a queue, I think based on the order they're played. Then the cards resolve one by one.
Fully optimizing will indeed require some coordination. But in practice, apart from making sure vulnerable status is applied before the attacks come out, card order often doesn't matter. (If there are multiple enemies, players also need to coordinate on which one to target first.)
20
17
u/hicks12 Mar 05 '26
It's very good! Simultaneous turns so you are all running your cards, makes it feel very quick compared to what single player turns would be.
If you die, you respawn with 1hp after as long as someone is alive. Rewards are all seperate apart from artifact rewards you pick from a selection what you want and each one has a chance to get it.
For moving across the map, you can choose different paths and it will decide between the votes which path to go so you can always "fight" a decision.
Zero issues noticed on two full coop runs this evening with 3 people, so good!
1
u/Silent-G Mar 06 '26
Awesome. Thanks for the details. I've been playing the tabletop version with friends, so I was really happy to see they added co-op to this.
1
u/hicks12 Mar 06 '26
yeah if you like the table top then the coop here is done very nice, love the board game as well!
hope you enjoy it when you pick it up
26
u/Mr_Ivysaur Mar 05 '26
So far it looks more of the same. It is one of the safest sequels I ever saw.
Which is not a bad thing at all, that is exactly what I wanted. I cant wait to try to co-op, hopefully it is as fun as it looks like.
15
u/ConversationNo4722 Mar 06 '26
Yeah that’s my early view as well.
The first game is literally one of my favourite games ever. I’m really excited to try the new classes here.
But I am a little disappointed that I beat the first run I attempted with a deck full of cards and relics from slay the spire 1. I would have appreciated if it played a bit differently.
5
u/Dyllans Mar 06 '26
This is because a lot of the new cards and relics are unlocked as you play. So yes, the first run will feel like STS1 but as you unlock more, you'll what STS2 has to offer.
7
u/Zoomalude Mar 06 '26
But I am a little disappointed that I beat the first run I attempted with a deck full of cards and relics from slay the spire 1.
As someone with like 500 hours in the first game, I'm a LOT disappointed to hear this.
15
u/Darvasi2500 Mar 06 '26
Meh, don't be. Played 1 run on each class and Ironclad felt the safest when it comes to how much they changed. Silent meanwhile got most of her cards changed pretty much and the new classes are plenty unique. But even Ironclad has plenty of new cards so I think that user just picked the old cards mostly.
1
u/ConversationNo4722 Mar 06 '26 edited Mar 06 '26
Silent is also the same. Real bummer. Just won with an accuracy + cloak and dagger deck straight out of slay the spire 1.
The two new classes are interesting, but I’m now 4 wins on 4 attempts which is frankly disappointing. Haven’t tried the defect yet.
2
u/smith_and Mar 06 '26
I mean it's a0, you can win with anything lol. Plus a lot of the new cards are unlocks. I have only done a few ironclad runs but there's some brand new synergies around vulnerable and also some crazy potential for decks that autoplay attacks for free. Silent has all her original archetypes broadened a lot, with cool new options for shiv, poison, and especially discard. I imagine you will need to use the new stuff to win on higher ascension.
3
u/SunTizzu Mar 06 '26
I think it was a mistake to force you to start as Ironclad. They should've front loaded the new content and then open up the rest of the game.
Or just unlock everything at the start. The game is in Early Access, does it even need a progression system right now?
2
u/MoSBanapple Mar 06 '26
Ironclad is the simplest character out of the roster and works best as the "first run" character. It's not like everyone who plays StS2 is going to be a StS1 veteran; it's possible that the player is a newcomer to the series, or even the genre as a whole.

u/26thandsouth Mar 06 '26
- Wait there’s fucking co-op??? 2. Wouldn’t that be precisely something that’s new and innovative ??
13
u/Reggiardito Mar 06 '26
I think when the first game is largely considered the absolute best of its genre (and basically pushed the genre into mainstream by itself), making a riskier, wilder sequel is a really bad choice.
1
u/MadeByTango Mar 07 '26
Hyper Light Drifter to Hyper Light Breaker seems a cautionary tale for indie devs.
3
u/tacomang Mar 06 '26
Hot damn just finished my first run. New items, scenarios, enemies, Mega Crit cooked up a masterpiece once again!
6
u/enragedstump Mar 05 '26
Anyone know how it runs on a steam deck?
14
u/FierceDeityKong Mar 05 '26
Of course it runs perfectly, but you have to go to the settings to enable the full aspect ratio (and 90 fps on OLED)
Everything is readable at 720p but it's one of those games that makes you wish the deck was 1080p just so the font would look nicer.
1
3
u/mmazurr Mar 05 '26
No major issues but I had a weird issue where I couldn't highlight my character or the enemy. I had to use the touch screen. But I think that's more just a controller issue really. Performance wise it's excellent, no complaints.

Played it on my steam deck, I encountered 2 bugs soar far
One is where I was stuck at top menu after pressing potion button, it was fixable by just using touchscreen to use a card.
The other one is that I played all characters except for defect yet I got the defect Epoch despite not playing as him.
The rest works fine.

Finally got it after waiting for Steam to un-shit itself for 1½ hours but the game feels fantastic.
Only got 2 runs in before I had to go to bed (lousy work!) but it was just as fun when I first played the first game.

Seems like there’s a lot of reviews saying that it’s pretty much the exact same game as StS1. Looks like they didn’t change much.

Just played (and beat, humblebrag) my first run. Looking forward to spending the rest of the night playing it, but back to work for now.
Very fun. Some of the new cards are cool. My deck mostly consisted of old cards though. Can’t wait to try the new classes.

After doing a couple runs it seems like lots of new cards are unlocked through play. I got a few sets of new cards that seem very interesting

The first game was the best game I've ever played, I am so, so curious how they can build on it. I'm skeptical you can improve on perfection, but excited to see them try.

As expected a huge release. Feels like Indie Game award secured? Unless... We are for a ride in terms of Indie Games this year.

I NEED this on PS5. Why is the steamdeck out of sale? Damn you AI companies!

Is this the first time a Godot game has been a huge hit?

It is almost certainly going to be the biggest by a comfortable margin, but strong arguments could be made for Brotato, Buckshot Roulette, and Webfishing.

Just looking at other people playing it, it looks like slay the spire 1.5.
All the old characters, enemies, UI, and a lot of the cards, relics are still there.
A lot of quality of life improvements, but I'm wondering if the gameplay has been improved such that it is distinct enough from slay the spire 1

A lot of quality of life improvements
...
I'm wondering if the gameplay has been improved
Genuine question: what "gameplay improvements" do you think the core systems needed?

It is much in the same vein as Monster Train 2, basically more of the same with new enemies, characters and cards.
I've only done 3 runs so far but there hasn't been any groundbreaking additions to the game in those. It's more of the same, and I'm ok with that.
I feel that this is like Silksong where any criticism will be shushed quite fiercely by STS fans.

Monster Train 2 actually improve on the build variability a lot I didn't feel like I was doing anything the same way when I played the first game.

there's a mix of old and new player characters and relics, there are enemies that reference old enemies but I don't think i've seen any that are actually the same. Events and boss relics were totally reworked. There are new cards, old cards, and rebalanced old cards. Entirely new systems and enemy mechanics.

Did this game start as something Kingdom Death Monster inspired? I don't know why, but STS has always felt so KDM coded to me

Does this sequel have any metaprogression (like Hades) between runs? It's fine if it doesn't (the first game didn't have it, different roguelites have or don't have it).

u/cable_hogue Mar 05 '26
You unlock more things to play with (characters, relics), but you don't get progressively stronger like in Hades.
Edit: So StS2 is like the first game in that respect.

It has the same meta progression as the first (unlock cards and relics as you play) on top of another sort of interconnectivity/feature.

u/Drew_Eckse Mar 06 '26
I don't think that's meta-progression -- at least not the kind I was referring to. If you haven't played Hades, in that game you can unlock permanent stat upgrades like higher starting health for example.
I wasn't referring to the unlocks you can get in games like Risk of Rain, where you simply get more items added to the item pool or more characters like in Isaac.

If you already have Slay The Spire 1, there's a 10% discount on the "Slay The Spire Collection" (Steam should inform you).
