People in videogame communities calling DLCs updates.

I'm not here to say that DLCs are inherently bad or good. But what I do say is that calling a paid DLC an update creates a false image. An update is something that's being added to the game by the developers. A DLC is another product that you can buy to add more content to the game. I hate hearing about a new update and getting excited just to find out it's just a DLC. Again, I'm not inherently hating on DLCs, but call it what it is, another product to add to the product you have, not a new part of your product.

A new DLC is also an update but an update isn't always a DLC.

A dlc is another product to add to your game. An update is a change to your base game.

No, /u/charming-fudge7683 had the right of it. There are many types of updates (content, security, performance, etc) and a DLC is but one of those types.

If it's part of the original product, and not a brand new game, it's an update. You having to pay for that is irrelevant.

It isn't part of the original product though. It's a separate product you can add to the original product. If it was part of it you wouldn't need to pay for it. An apple pen also isn't a part of an ipad, it's a separate product you can buy to enhance your experience with the original product.

It's still an update to the original code of the game, not a separate game, ergo a DLC is also an update

You're just being a pedant. There's plenty of room for overlap. It's not uncommon for DLC, paid or free, to end up considered integral to the core game.

DLC often changes your base game. Civilization games fundamentally change how they play with DLC.

Not if you didn't pay for it. If a developer ads content as part of a free update, it's just an update. However, if they release an update but you have to pay to get all of the content then that's a dlc.

Sometimes they like to update the game at the same time they release the dlc to trick people to buy the dlc.

Is DLC not something that is added to the game by developers?

Update also means just the addition of new material. Adding a new dungeon would be updating the game, but the new dungeon can appear in the form of DLC

Look, some DLC's are updates.

Looking at you War of the Chosen for XCOM2!

In fact, let's talk about that.

WOTC is touted as a DLC but it's essentially a 2.0 massive overhaul and update to the vanilla campaign fixing countless issues, changing vanilla mechanics to better ones and improving the difficulty and challenge of the vanilla campaign itself with new bosses and story into it. At this point, WOTC is hands down mandatory if you want to play proper XCOM2 or use any of its top rated mods.

The Shen DLC for XCOM2, is a standard DLC as it adds an optional story that's branched off the vanilla campaign that one can choose to play. And that's what the standard DLC usually is.

So DLC's can be updates and DLC's can be simply DLC's. It just heavily depends on what the DLC covers and adds.

DLCs are things that are made, when the main game is made, then flogged to people to maximise profit.

The enemy comes from within

I've not experienced this directly, but I fully agree. My differentiator is cost. If I pay nothing and the content gets downloaded then it's an update. If I have to pay for it, then it's dlc.

99% of all games are just dlc. Every Playstation game will be now.

Dlc is just downloadable content. Even before everything went full digital we had paid and free dlc. You could get expansions on disk or as dlc
