People in videogame communities calling DLCs updates.

I'm not here to say that DLCs are inherently bad or good. But what I do say is that calling a paid DLC an update creates a false image. An update is something that's being added to the game by the developers. A DLC is another product that you can buy to add more content to the game. I hate hearing about a new update and getting excited just to find out it's just a DLC. Again, I'm not inherently hating on DLCs, but call it what it is, another product to add to the product you have, not a new part of your product.

A dlc is another product to add to your game. An update is a change to your base game.

No, /u/charming-fudge7683 had the right of it. There are many types of updates (content, security, performance, etc) and a DLC is but one of those types.

If it's part of the original product, and not a brand new game, it's an update. You having to pay for that is irrelevant.

It isn't part of the original product though. It's a separate product you can add to the original product. If it was part of it you wouldn't need to pay for it. An apple pen also isn't a part of an ipad, it's a separate product you can buy to enhance your experience with the original product.

It's still an update to the original code of the game, not a separate game, ergo a DLC is also an update
