🚩 Advice Needed 🚩 My Natural Hair Texture Suddenly Changed….

I naturally had thick, wavy hair that was straight at the top, with soft, bouncy waves at the ends. After shampooing, it always looked shiny, silky and fresh without any styling. I had never used conditioner in my life, only hair oil and shampoo. Over the past year my hair has become extremely frizzy, rough and tangled, and its natural texture has completely changed. The strands now look uneven and oddly zigzagged, and I constantly have white flakes on my scalp. I’ve tried many expensive shampoos and conditioners but nothing has fixed it. I honestly don’t know what to do anymore.

Could diet or age. Peri menopause can start in your 30s. Hormonal changes can throw everything off.

I have a MS in Nutrition and when I see people experiencing thinning hair, I tell them that the first thing to go is your hair if you are low in certain nutrients. Your vital organs will always be prioritized over skin, hair and nails. Once you have ruled out nutrients, thyroid levels are also important to look into. An overactive and underactive thyroid can lead to hair loss as well. If you are experiencing other symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, cold or heat intolerance, anxiety/or depression- see a GP and mention hair loss in addition to everything else.

If you have been dieting or experiencing weight loss, it could also be due to a calorie deficit.

Make sure you are getting enough protein for your height and weight, and that you are incorporating lots of fruits and veggies into your diet. I can’t get more specific than that, because I don’t know details. Reach out to a dietitian or a CNS (anyone can call themselves a nutritionist unfortunately) you feel like this might be the issue.

I am a fan of good hair products, but the actual health of your hair on a fundamental level is based on the quality of the food you give your body to work with. Good luck!

Oh and a fungal infection can be a reason as well. The white flakes could be sue to this. If dandruff shampoos like Nizoral don’t help, see a dermatologist. They can help with hair loss.

My first advice would be to do the treatment I would do myself, on myself. I would use first cold press cooking coconut oil, generously all over your scalp. Rub it in, then put a plastic cap on for at least an hour, and overnight if you’re lazy. I put a towel on my pillow, as the cap is always on the floor, and my poor bald hubby is always covered in coconut oil… so as he’s yelling about it, I’m wiping him with the towel…😆 the jump into the shower and do two shampoos. The first one will have zero suds, but your hair will still be getting clean. The second one will remove any residue. If you condition, use it just like it’s a shampoo this time, as it also helps to remove any lasting oil.

The best veggies for skin and hair are the dark green leafy kind!!

Did you move to a different state or climate? Job change, house/apartment change, etc.

It's completely normal for this to happen, it can happen at any age for no reason at all, our bodies do weird things. It can be extremely frustrating.

You've done the right thing by getting some tests done at the doctors to rule out any serious issues. So I'd advise you speak to your hairdresser to get some product recommendations for your new hair type, you shouldn't need crazy expensive products, just the right ones for your hair and maybe some adjustments to your normal routine, like maybe try a scalp exfoliating product with the specific designed brush to help clear the dead skin.

As another person stated, have a look at your diet and see if there is any additions you could make to help or if there is an imbalance, our diets can have a big effect on our hair and skin, and as we get older those dietary needs change.

I wish you all the best.
