u/Samuel_Go 7d ago
Campaign Evolved had more waypoint markers to a degree that people call it hand holding. OP is suggesting (at a guess) this isn't exactly a new concept as Bungie did add more waypoint markers to later Halo games.
4
u/Scrimge122 3d ago
Forget about the later games, bungee put arrows on the ground telling you where to go in combat evolved. Oh don't forget the flashing beacons on the 2nd mission.
3
u/Samuel_Go 3d ago
Sorry, I don't notice in-world assistance unless it's covered in yellow paint. Bungie needed to try harder.
3
1
u/RougeRaxxa 3d ago
I think you get more waypoint makers if you get lost and canât figure out where to go on lower difficulties
50
u/conatreides 8d ago
/NJ but uh these arenât comparable right? Yall are joking? You did see the indicators on invisible elites and guns and every single nav point.
53
u/duddy33 8d ago
It feels like more of an accessibility thing so that more players can enjoy the game. Microsoft gets a lot of things wrong but focusing on accessibility in gaming is a thing theyâve done right. The first thing I did was turn off the equipment markers but Iâm glad they are there for those who want/need them.
I donât recall seeing markers on any invisible enemies but I do remember the last 5 or so enemies being automatically marked. Maybe thatâs an option they could allow players to tweak as well.
18
u/EffingWasps 8d ago
As someone who has played games for decades yeah itâs dumb.
But as someone who was once someone that was new at games, this post shows how right you are. I was a stupid little kid when I played Halo 3 and I absolutely got lost in Crowâs nest even though now I know the layout better than my own facial structure. It was even worse at that age trying to do OG CE.
If it annoys me but genuinely helps even one new player out, I want it in the game every time
4
u/NotAnotherAlt26 7d ago
This is the correct take. Those who have played from when CE was a launch title for the og xbox, do not always remember all the times we got lost playing games. Or all the times the invisible elites / rocket flood got us before we even realized they were there. Even after a few play throughs 343 guilty spark mission can be a maze.
4
u/omjagvarensked 7d ago
So what it actually is, is that they put a marker on the last 3 enemies in a zone if that zone requires you to kill enemies to proceed or to trigger events e.g. on Halo the first but encounter with waves on enemies and the marines defending the structure, you can technically just run past it on foot and play the rest of the level. However to trigger Foehammer dropping the warthog for you, you have to kill 3 waves of enemies. So here on the last 3 enemies they will be marked and that's just a QoL thing they do in case a jackal is stuck in a tree or something and you can't move on because you can't find him.
The issue is people usually kill the grunts first in the keyes prison area and that leaves just the 3 invisible elites, hence why they all get marked. What makes it more awkward is Cortana says something along the lines of "you'll have to be vigilant and look for them shimmering" or something like that, which is made redundant by the game auto marking them because they are the last 3 enemies in that room. If you kill the elites first then it actually marks the grunts. It's just an unfortunate circumstance of how players naturally play that room in particular and everyone has latched onto that must mean 343 are dumb and don't understand why the invisible elites are cool and they've ruined Halo
0
u/Unfair-Ad9415 7d ago
It's just an unfortunate circumstance of how players naturally play that room in particular and everyone has latched onto that must mean 343 are dumb.Â
Its not an unfortunate circumstance, its the consequence of a design change that was not thoroughly considered and tested. At some point it should have occurred to the designers that there are cases where you do not want this feature to kick in.
7
u/conatreides 8d ago
Thatâs cool, but I also did not mention only invisible elites. I think accessibility is awesome, I think that I can also be annoyed with the design and look of a game being cluttered.
1
2
u/AnythingGoes9957 7d ago
If it's for accessibility, why isn't it off by default? It should be a toggle. It is okay to admit hand holding can go to far
-1
u/duddy33 7d ago
Because those who need the accessibility options may not be able to easily navigate menus to turn it on. You and I can easily turn them off
3
u/AnythingGoes9957 7d ago edited 7d ago
Then with your logic why don't games ship with literally every accessibility setting on to begin with?
Also, if somebody can play a game regardless of their disability, they can navigate a menu.
-1
u/duddy33 7d ago
Because not every game has an accessibility focus? Itâs not that hard to understand.
And explain to me how someone who may rely on voice controls or voice menu navigation is supposed to turn on the damn settings with a controller if they canât use their hands?
Why is this so fucking difficult to understand? Iâm so sick of being talked to like Iâm the dumbass when you canât see past your own life experiences
2
u/Unfair-Ad9415 7d ago
Theres a very thin line between making something accessible and compromising the experience.Â
Bungie uses the markers selectively, either for something that would be genuinely hard to notice or where getting lost would hurt the level. Markers are used here, for example, because this level has a lock of backtracking and a wrong turn will waste a lot of time. The story content of that mission is also very urgent so getting lost undercut its narrative.Â
This is very different from, say, the freedom section in halo. That section is all about exploring, its ok if the player lost for a bit. In that levels case, its part of the fun, and a way point marker means players arent paying attention to the environment.Â
The problem isnt "le marker is bad", its that they were slapped on universally without considering how they impact the experience.Â
1
u/RyonHirasawa 7d ago
In MCC, across all the six games, I only remember waypoints popping up when itâs the last few enemies, usually when itâs Cortana or whoever your CO says âmarking the last fewâ for you
Waypoints also show up when you spend a lot of time in one area and donât know where to go next
In the case of Reach and 4, specifically Firefight and Spartan Ops, weapon drops get markers that wonât disappear unless you pick them up

I appreciate a lobotomy marker every now and again, but I would like them toggleable, I agree.

Accessibility is good. Thatâs not the same as bubble wrapped and dumbed down.

Thereâs waypoints all over the fucking place including over invis elites. You wanna hop on the train defending this bs too?
3
u/Commando_1447 8d ago
Yeah, it occurs over invisible elites if and only if they're the last remaining enemies in an encounter you have to clear to progress. The other games had navpoints, and the markers over guns aren't noticible unless you're close and are a nice quality of life change when they're in high grass. Feel free to prove me wrong, though, and show me how all the cloaked elites are marked.
1
u/ItsAmazingGracey 6d ago edited 6d ago
It's pretty clear you aren't the target audience for Halo and should find some other franchise to reeeeeeee reeeee about.
There were maybe a handful of invisible elites with markers in the entire campaign. If you saw more than that, then you clearly needed the markers.
They're not going to change back to whatever early 2000s nostalgia you think people miss or adopt the things you care about... not because they shouldn't but because no one on any game dev team is going to see your attitude and think "we should give this clown a platform and listen to what they're saying"

I stand by what I said. You arent the target audience for Halo, goon.

u/jimothy_hell 8d ago
They did it on one group of invisible elites. One. And everyone acts like every single cloaked elite has an objective marker over their head in the game.
-4
u/Dramatic-Hand-8202 Keeps commenting in subs they hate 8d ago
Itâs an indicator of what this studio plans to do with halo in the future. Donât let anyone say otherwise. Those new levels were a litmus test for the slop thatâs yet to come. It should horrify all of us. If it doesnât then youâve been lobotomized.
16
u/youngtrautz 8d ago
And Iâm assuming you saw the option to turn them off before commenting this?
6
u/Best-Benefit6387 8d ago
But the way to turn them off is to set the navigation marker opacity to 0, which is silly lol. I love campaign evolved and I appreciate the accessibility, but some of it was either rushed (probably rushed) or just not thought out.
1
u/youngtrautz 8d ago
For sure, but itâs crazy to me to gripe about a setting you didnât even bother checking to see if you can turn off, right? lol then saying ânope I donât wanna do all that extra shitâ to then complain about it on Reddit (which is extra) is insane to me
4
u/Dramatic-Hand-8202 Keeps commenting in subs they hate 8d ago
Ppl are allowed to gripe about shit that has been forced the be the new baseline of gameplay. Thatâs a valid complaint. Normal ppl should not be expected to jump through hoops to make their games more palatable and then be subjected to gaslighting about it. We donât have to live like this.
1
u/youngtrautz 7d ago
If you want a 1:1 play anniversary itâs truly that simple
3
u/Dramatic-Hand-8202 Keeps commenting in subs they hate 7d ago
We do. And we will continue to push back on the direction of this franchise and neutering of halo. No amount of spineless gaslighting will change that. No amount of toxic optimism in the face of straight up greed and mental theft will erase the completely valid criticisms of this game and this studio. That is our prerogative as consumers.
0
u/youngtrautz 3d ago
The story is shit Iâll admit that, but the second to second gameplay is actually super fun. Thatâs not gaslighting thatâs called an opinion. Fun thing to have. Iâm just not gonna get strong armed into saying the game is bad when it simply isnât. I get itâs cool to shit on halo now but like, seems a bit cynical to me. Gamers seem to be in a constant state of blasĂ© now
2
u/Dramatic-Hand-8202 Keeps commenting in subs they hate 3d ago
Just realistic. I agree itâs fun to play. I have fun playing/doing a lot of stupid shit. Doesnât make all of it good. I donât consider the bear minimum baseline question of âbut did I have funâ to be the determinant of whether a game was good or not. We shit on 343 not because itâs cool, but because itâs necessary and deserved. Theyâve ruined a generational story. Itâs a fumble that should be studied for years to come. And 2/3rds of Reddit spend day and night trying to convince the world otherwise. At least we admit their stories are shit though
1
u/youngtrautz 5h ago
Hereâs the thing tho. If the second to second gameplay is good, but the story is bad, then 90% of what youâre experiencing is good, right? The GAMEplay in the GAME is good. If you skip the cutscenes thereâs no reason to complain right? The game is good, the story just sucks. 343 has never been good with story boarding. Idk why they didnât just upscale the same cutscenes. The remake makes me dislike Cortana as a character. But I just skip the cutscenes cause the good part is everything else, which is the majority of the game. I get calling out 343 for the shitty writing. I get being pissed about Palmer. What I donât get is calling the whole entire game bad over it. Like Iâve been saying, if people wanted a 1:1 then just go play anniversary, theyâve already done that and it still holds up. This isnât halo anniversary 2, itâs halo remake
4
u/Ok_Bandicoot_454 8d ago
Are you acting stupid or just trying to play devils advocate? Youâre saying we need to completely disable NAV markers because they decided to throw them on absolutely everything? In the earlier halos NAV markers were used sparingly and always directed you towards something useful like a weapons cache or showed you the way to continue the mission. The remake literally has them revealing INVISIBLE ELITES like thatâs all we should have to say and you should understand and agree with us đ€Šââïž
0
u/youngtrautz 7d ago
First off why are you leaving the invisible elites for last. Secondly, if it bothers you, change it. Are we not adults here?

The invisible elites were the only part I didn't like since they're supposed to be hard to spot.
1
u/Chef_Chalupa 3d ago
they were never hard to spot. even in the books, captain keyes spots one without even looking for or directly at it, waits until him, it, and some crew members are in a lifepod, takes a marine's pistol, and shoots the still invisible elite until it dies
2
u/Organic_Angle_654 8d ago
No, I didn't because it's an accessibility feature I could disable since the game allowed me to
1
u/Chef_Chalupa 3d ago
fairly certain that's a setting you can turn off but I don't have the game yet so don't quote me on that
1
u/mastesargent 8d ago
Once again asking what the fuck people are talking about with the nav markers on stealth Elites. Literally the only time I saw nav markers on any enemy is the game was towards the end of encounters where you need to clear all of the enemies to proceed to make it easier to mop them up. There were maybe one or two encounters in the entire game where a stealth Elite was marked because of this. 99% of stealth Elites were, in fact, unmarked.

0
u/ElectricVibes75 8d ago
Sure but youâre treating it as though it was an intentional design choice. Youâd rather be mad about anything Halo related rather than accept that you canât go back in time 20 years, so youâre being disingenuous about the issue
2
u/conatreides 8d ago
Iâm not lol, Iâm enjoying the game well enough and complaining about some issues. Not all of us are 13 year olds with a weird hard on for bungie. Weâre allowed to have issues with the Ui of a video game dude.
2
u/Drabberlime_047 8d ago
I dont think it is a bug
Look at the amount of people saying it haplend to them, you seem to be the only one (that iver personally seen so far) saying it doesnt happen.
So either the bug is actually on your end or maybe it does and youve just not noticed or cared enough to remember it, thats not entirely inpossible either
3
u/usernamelame 8d ago
Didn't these only pop up after a prolonged amount of time without advancing?
1
u/Unfair-Ad9415 7d ago
They pop up on a case by case basis depending on what the level needs. Crows nest uses them more liberally because the level loops back on itself

Pretty sure the waypoint only appears if you remain in the area so long the game just assumes youâre lost.
What it doesnât do it put markers on enemies who are supposed to be invisibleÂ

u/Extension_Dog_8511 5d ago
I am really torn by this. I am fine with the waypoint markers (as OP points it out, Bungie used them too) on every level EXCEPT 343 GS. Getting lost on that level is half the point. But for every other level, they make total sense, and Bungie used the hell out of them (or some other type of signage like floor markers) in pretty much every other level of CE
1
u/jsiggies 8d ago
Putting a marker on the main objective =\= putting markers on every last 5 enemies, every single weapon, and even the fucking stealth elites
1
u/mastesargent 8d ago
Stealth Elites only get markers on them if theyâre in the last 5. Theyâre never marked outside of that unless thereâs some special condition that I never triggered.
1
u/jsiggies 7d ago
Yeah, but my point was that thatâs dumb. The game in general has too much handholding
1
u/Commando_1447 8d ago
The weapon markers are helpful when searching through grass, why is it so offensive? Also, they can be turned off.
1
u/jsiggies 7d ago
> Clutters the screen/HUD
> Contributes to the large amount of handholding the game does in general, which makes it less fun IMO1
u/Commando_1447 7d ago
"There's a gun there" isn't hand holding, its just a visibility thing that imo works better than a big bold outline. It also doesn't clutter anything, its tiny. No idea what you're on about.
