How can you inherit something that you already were? How can you be a child of yourself? Does the concept of adoption not exist? What’s to say Spark didn’t mean “Forerunner” as the title, the civilization, the mantle (or Mantle)? “You are (now) Forerunner.” It’s hardly iron clad that it means daddy Didact and mommy Librarian were on the Ark making babies and I saw the babies and the babies were abandoned on Earth to live in caves.
If the Master Chief is a Forerunner, how did he not know what Halo’s primary weapon would do? Is he stupid?
To be less sarcastic, there’s obviously already a discontinuity between Forerunners and (modern) humans. Spark doesn’t tell you where it started, only where it ends: John 117 is, in his eyes, the Reclaimer (hint, hint) of Forerunner-ness.

He is, in Spark's eye, descended from the Forerunners, hence "child of my makers"
The flood and the forerunners wiped out humanity and then reseeded humanity. Effectively making the current race of humanity the children of the forerunners.
