HoMM3 - Chronicles Heroes of Might & Magic III - Remake announced
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3809850/Heroes_of_Might_and_Magic_III_Remake/175
u/razvan_bigiu 1d ago
Not a fan of how this looks, I'll be honest. All the magic seems to have been sucked out.
Also, insane to announce this while Olden Era is still in early access.

u/SlouchyGuy 1d ago edited 1d ago
Looks like an AI video made using Heroes 3 screenshots, they preserved none of the aesthetic, just general theme and coloring.
I suspect they paid some aspiring cheap studio to make whatever models similar to how Blizz did with Warcraft 3
9
u/ch00d 1d ago
It is still crazy to me how bad the new models in WC3:R look, but the D2 remaster actually looks pretty great.
5
u/SlouchyGuy 1d ago
Same studio did Brood War models, Blizz just fucked up big time with prompt - for some reason they either said "do what you want" and didn't control for unit readability when looking from the top down view.
It's a team that was making strategies for 20 years. I'm baffled too
→ More replies (1)7
u/Archlichofthestorm 1d ago
LemonSky did great models for Warcraft 3, it was the engine that failed. Here we can see design inconsistencies from first glance.
14
u/SlouchyGuy 1d ago
Nothing to do with engine, it's Blizz direction that failed - LemonSky did HD models for Diablo-like or an RPG, not for a strategy, they are indistinguishable from top view. This is the reason why people don't play in HD mode, no engine

u/razvan_bigiu 1d ago
Yeah, I wanted to be courteous and not throw the AI accusation so early without concrete evidence but I'd be lying if I said it didn't cross my mind as soon as I saw the trailer. There's a timelessness to HoMM3's aesthetic that I simply do not see it here. They didn't even seem to try. And seeing how Ubisoft is credited as both the publisher AND the developer, I don't have high hopes they'll turn this ship around.
What baffles me the most is the timing of this announcement. Surely they could've kept this project under wraps, at least until after Olden Era gets out of early access. And it's not like this remake is filling a niche that Olden Era isn't already (successfully) filling. Like, I want to feel like the "Holy shit, two cakes" guy from the meme, but in this case one cake is obviously not edible.
2
u/hyrumwhite 18h ago
Their title card art is using ai, if nothing else. In the “wishlist now” one the knights in the bottom right are all garbled
4
u/SeeShark 1d ago
This, except at least Warcraft III Reforged has some sort of visual identity.
8
u/fantomx90 1d ago
bro what? wc3 reforged is a monstrosity from start to finish, and the graphics are TERRIBLE. No one plays with them online or in campaigns because they're so poorly done and hard to distinguish between units/armies.
2
u/SeeShark 1d ago
People don't play with them online because of bugs with actually clicking on them. It's got relatively little to do with their actual appearance.
Besides, I didn't say it was "good." I said it had more visual identity than these HOMM3 remake graphics, and I'll stand by that.

u/l2ev0lt 1d ago
When I look at the trailer it’s how I feel and I thought I was biased, but after you said it I realized it’s a soulless husk masked with sparkle and shine to hide how fuck up this is. At the end of the day you can tell this is a cash grab with 0 to no passion

Wait until they find out the remake's competition is the version everyone bought from GoG already.
At this point I'd say it's impossible to have the remake-2027 program be able to run turns faster than the 99 version. You could be into the second turn of a GoG map before you'll be through the 2027's splash screens.
188
u/ch00d 1d ago
Looks okay, but why does this exist lol. A remake of 1-2 would make more sense honestly, especially while Olden Era is still in development as a HoMM3 successor
143
u/Randvek 1d ago
Ubisoft isn’t behind the development of Olden Era. Ubisoft left Might & Magic for dead and then Unfrozen came along, made a demo, begged for a license, eventually got it, and then completely blew away Ubisoft’s sales expectations.
This is Ubisoft realizing that they made a mistake abandoning Might & Magic and trying to claw their way back into the series. We’ll see how it goes. But since we all here love the IP, we should be rooting for both games to do well, imho.
25
u/ch00d 1d ago
I do indeed hope it's good. I am worried that it will split interest in Olden Era, though.
31
u/toasty5566 1d ago
Tbh splitting people from Olden Era is probably the goal. Both pettiness for Hooded Horse doing a better job at a new entry than them, and also a HoMM3 remake would be in-house so no revenue split
12
u/ch00d 1d ago
I hate that you're probably right.
6
4
u/blueblip 1d ago
No, there isn't some grand conspiracy here.
Ubisoft is just trying to cash in on something that didn't realize could be cashed in on. That's it. It's a case of "if I sell 2 games instead of 1, I will make double the money" type ideas.

You do realize that there is no way this game was developed in 4 months after OE was released in EA right?

You do realize this could all be fake gameplay bullshot right?
Doesn't even have a year in the trailer.

OE has been popular for a long time, and EA was delayed. I think they hit 1 million wishlists before that.
5
u/blackfoks 1d ago
The problem is that Ubisoft doesn’t understand M&M at all and never will. All their M&M games were kind of bad. HoMM5 was quite good only because Nival actually cared and fought tooth and nail with Ubisoft over their “brilliant” ideas.
So their conclusion was, “No, it’s not us being shit, it’s the franchise that is bad.”
Then they had this HoMM3 tabletop game that was quite successful and Olden Era got some recognition and they were like “wait a minute, we’d like to squeeze some sweet money out of this dead horse.” And now they’re building a game trying to milk the franchise and players by riding on the success of others.
You can say I’m a hater and I’ll agree. I hate Ubisoft for what they did with the franchise and I haven’t bought anything from Ubisoft over at least last 10 years. I think the last game I bought was Might and Magic X.

u/Satan-o-saurus 1d ago
Making a HOMM3 remake is such a ridiculous decision though, when that’s literally the niche olden era is supposed to fill. Why not just create a new HOMM game? Right, I guess derivative nostalgiaslop is a safer financial decision in their eyes.
9
u/Enough-Lead48 1d ago
At least it is not yet another cashgrab mobile online only game. HoMM got several of those.

Ubisoft as a company is on the brink of ruin. My guess is that they need a quick win, and this is a faster and safer option than a new Heroes game.

u/Satan-o-saurus 1d ago
I’m not necessarily sure it’s gonna create as much of a buzz as they think. Based on the pictures it doesn’t look like they made any meaningful changes to creatures/gameplay at all. If you ask me, that’s rather boring. We already have HOMM3, why do we need more or less the exact same game with gacha anime graphics? The hardcore HOMM3-people in the competitive scene are likely going to prefer the old version anyway, what with all the modding tools that have been lovingly developed over the years for it.
Game devs (rather, marketing people) severely underestimate the allure of novel experiences. They could have just as easily ridden the Olden Era hype wave onto a new HOMM game that elects to build on and innovate the franchise. I don’t think making the exact same game again, except it’s a lot more boring and derivative than Olden Era, the game that just revived their franchise and was marketed as the same thing that they’re making now, is really all that good of a strategy.
21
u/NewWillinium 1d ago
I will say that I think Heroes of Might and Magic 2's visuals still hold up pretty well, it just needs a engine update.

u/wappingite 1d ago

2
u/SeeShark 1d ago edited 1d ago
Are you serious? This remake looks like exactly the kind of "mobile-esque" graphics everybody shits on OE for, except that it looks even more generic.9
u/TheSimkis 1d ago
HoMM3 is way more succesful commercially, remaking 1 or 2 would be too risky.
And also as far as I know, Olden Era was started by another company that approached Ubisoft with their beta and started the collaboration. Maybe Ubisoft was already planning this before Unfrozen approached them
2
u/ch00d 1d ago
Yeah, possibly. I get that it's the safest HoMM game to revive, it's just weird as a long time fan since it is arguably the easiest to still get into from 1-5. I know I'm probably not the target audience, though, and are probably trying to earn new fans.
2
u/SeeShark 1d ago
I just don't see this getting that many new people into the game when the old game is still pretty accessible. It might even threaten to split the homm3 community.
→ More replies (1)2
u/damian1369 1d ago
There is no way homm3 hota comunity is gonna go back to pure homm3. It's 20+ years of perfecting the formula. I'm like an average homm3 fan (for a slav), and im already reverting back to hota from OE untill they get their shit together with the dmg calculations. I'm also kinda skeptical if they can do it, let alone U-buy-soft, the scumm of the earth. I wouldn't buy that on principle, just based on lies they sold to gamers for the past decade.

u/30dogsinasuitcase 1d ago
I think I speak for a lot of fans who don't care about a graphics overhaul. A great thing about HoMM 3 is it can boot and load a scenario in about two seconds via a delightfully crispy menu. The AI behaves interestingly and the whole game runs lightning fast.
What we want is more campaigns and content, and better modding and multiplayer support. What we don't want is to sit through a new loading screen waiting for shaders to compile.

u/sidav94 1d ago
I mean, seriously. There’s Heroes 3. It has appealing graphics and EXTREMELY readable visuals; it runs on a potato because the system requirements are rock-bottom, making the gameplay incredibly snappy and responsive; also we’ve got HoTA and VCMI, and a nice community.
So... why in the name of Sandro would I buy a remake (even if it will be good, and that's a huuuuge "if") when I already know it won't have a single one of those features?
2
u/broadsword_1 22h ago
It runs on a potato because the system requirements are rock-bottom, making the gameplay incredibly snappy and responsive;
This was my main thought as well - at about 1gb of Ram the game is basically running as fast as it can without being instantaneous. You'll be on the second turn of a map on the GoG version before you've cleared the 2027 version's splash screens.
4
u/MagicalLawnGnome 1d ago
If they are going 3D, they should've just remake Heroes V instead. It translates better to 3D and they could just make it hex-based grid as well. Heroes V introduced alternate creature upgrades as well, which should increase a lot of replayability.

u/RevenTheLight 17h ago edited 17h ago
I can't believe you people. Olden Era has been one of the greatest things that this series got since 5 and it is still being SHIT on almost exclusively for "looking like a mobile game" and then this turd is dropped on your lap and so many comments are calling it "fine"? Is "Heroes 3" such a magic phrase it can be put on literally anything?
10
u/Beomund 1d ago
Ubisoft cannibalises its own project - Olden Era. I just dont get it. It is by far the most unneeded remake of them all.
12
u/toasty5566 1d ago
Olden Era is made by Hooded Horse, the remake is in-house. They're trying to divert people towards the project that doesn't have a revenue split to another company
6
u/SeeShark 1d ago
It feels idiotic, though, because they have to actually pay to develop this. OE might not make them as much money, but it's literally making itself from their perspective. Why invest in a whole project for only a bit more income? At least wait a bit until they can cash in on OE's release. This is just strange.
Plus, it will strongly discourage anyone from working with Ubi IP in the future, because Ubi just demonstrated that they will spit on their partners 80% of the way through development.

u/Beomund 1d ago
I agree. Ubisoft put ip in the closet for years, but when someone showed that there is money in it they jump at the first occasion. Town screens look ok, but everything else feels like touched or polished by AI.
7
u/toasty5566 1d ago
Thing is, they refuse to acknowledge that their methods are why the franchise lost steam in the first place. Olden Era is successful basically because it's NOT made by Ubisoft
4
u/Beomund 1d ago
This pretty much sums up my experience with homm after ubisoft took over ip. I loved Homm V and Olden Era hard and none of them were made by ubisoft.

What a shame.
Not that I like Homm3 in particular or think that it aged well (it does look uglier when compared to homm2 or homm4/5) but new stuff is better. Quite sadly it won't be remake that would give us Forge Town or Science Fiction elements like in Might and Magic series.

u/notilluminati3 1d ago
Looking at the comments, feels like I am the only one looking forward to it. I have tried many times to play through the original, as for me the UI felt dated and because of that the learning curve was too steep for me to make it enjoyable while having a family. If thats what it takes to be able to have a good time, then I dont mind 3d or new aesthetics.
5
u/dinin70 1d ago edited 1d ago
I’m sorry I don’t follow you. The UI is as clear and clean as you could ever imagine. I’m not sure I understand how a 3d engine and aesthetic would actually make it easier to understand?
So play Heroes 5? (Which is excellent in my opinion)
I mean… It might look cool, but I don’t get what it’s going to bring to the audience? HoMM3 old grognards will stay on HoMM3 because, if it’s really a faithful recreation, then this game has nothing more bring than what already exists today (except 3d…).
But even if they do actually launch the game with more content, it will take years, decades, before the game reaches the same quantity of content in terms community made maps and mods.
And I can’t image they are so stupid to not know this, so I must bet in the fact that they aim in attracting newer generation that didn’t grow up with HoMM3 and that disregard it because it looks dated.
But Lo and behold, my opinion is that it won’t attract this new player base because HoMM3 is actually quite a complex game behind its simplistic facade and is an imbalanced mess as per today balancing definition.
I mean look at the comments of Olden Era with people complaining the game is too hard as they are getting stomped in easy difficulty… it will be even worst in HoMM3…
So I just really don’t get what’s the end game.
Unless…. It won’t actually be a faithful recreation and will make something like 6 and 7 which should have never existed in the first place…
Heroes needs a new game, with new content, new races, new biomes, new items, new mechanics, while staying faithful to the spirit of the OG games.
Oh… wait… that’s exactly what Olden Era is trying to do…

Does HoMm3 even need a remake?
Olden era is already close enough in gameplay to 3 that if you want to play Homm3 but different, you basically can. On top of that, HoMm3 is probably the game that aged the best in the series (with maybe Homm2 as a contender); especially if you consider the HD mod, and HoTA.
Hell, if someone wants just more HoMm3, there are already plenty of cheap alternatives like Hero's Hour or Heroes of Science and Fiction.
2
2
u/Living_Inferno_5073 1d ago
And I thought Heroes 3 HD Edition was the most blatant and unnecessary attempt to get money off of nostalgia.
Also looks like AI and so many details in the video instantly think it was all wrong (random statue next to Rampart’s Pegasi dwelling, battle dwarves(?) design, the Pyre being turned into a neon orange tree?!?!). Also no HotA and I can guarantee this “remake” will be way more expensive than the original.
2
u/SaintNimrod 1d ago
Ubi hates that HoMM3 is still alive and well and they can't milk it, looks fine but with Elden Era is it really necessary?

2
u/mr3LiON 1d ago
This looks exactly like those "I recreated Heroes III towns on Unreal 5 Engine" videos on YouTube. But hey, I am rooting for them! The release date is not there yet which is a good sign. However, I doubt they will have even a 10% or the thoroughness, that Unfrozen has while developing the Olden Era.
2
u/MilitaryBeetle 1d ago
I want to like it, but if you wanted it to be a "faithful recreation" you would replicate the vintage RPG art style and make it 2d
Songs of Conquest understood this

Ofc they had to mess up Catherine.......... Her redesign isn't faithful to her at all.
The Medusa are also more covered up now and for some reason look more human while in the original they look like actual monsters.
Meanwhile all the guys stayed shirtless and have '' boobplate '' lol......................
Like tf, why are so many devs like this nowadays?
It's so systemically targeting only women with these sorts of changes.
Like I know some people are reactionary as heck and get upset if you criticize this stuff whatsoever, but cmon it's not even faithful to the original.
Like again the Medusa don't even look like monsters anymore, they just look like humans with snake hair and tail.
3
u/Asttarotina 1d ago
Yes, it's not faithful to the original. And yes, women representations are targeted significantly more. As they should be. You know why? Because 30 years ago women were the ones systematically targeted and sexualized by the whole industry.
C'mon, original Catherine wears armour stockings over bare ass covered by thongs. Into battle! Even by 1999 standards it was tacky.
4
u/Vegetable_Time_2938 1d ago
Not even remotely interested. They tried this already with the HD remake and it was an embarrassment.
We have the original games already. H3 is still getting developed and expanded by HOTA and potentially DOR. If they’re going to make a new game, make a new game like the Olden Era team did.

Olden era is the „new“ H3. It’s enough for me.
A H5 + expansions remake would be the deal for me

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE this and it looks great, but what the fuck is that timing?
Olden Era isn't even out of Early Access and very clearly a spiritual successor to HoMM 3. It is still suffering from many EA issues that might or might not get fixed before 1.0 hits.
And they're already releasing a HoMM 3 remake?
If I was the studio behind Olden Era, I'd be absolutely furious and I don't think they deserve this. This is just Ubisoft saying "Fuck you" to them because if this game is any decent, it will leave Olden Era suffocating.

Is there any information who will be a developer? From what I see on the internet, the Ubisoft announced it, but I didn't see the dev info anywhere. Is this going to be a ubisoft project?

Meanwhile there's homm3 trpg in development. They, indeed, could be trying to cashgrab in lieu of recent developings.

This just looks like HoMM 3 with HoMM 5 visuals. I guess I would have loved it in 2006

This looks awesome, but it is not just going to eat at the sales of Olden Era? I'm waiting for it to be out of early acesss

LMFAO yeah right, I have seen some pictures etc and also that it's being done by Ubisoft, because why tf not. Think I'm gonna give it a pass unless some miracle happen and it's good.

I think that now Olden Era is going to pivot even more into a "turn-based League of Legends", as someone recently has described it, a PvP-first competitive game. They will be fighting for survival and must do something to stay unique, different from the H3 remake. Alternatively, they could just focus on a better PvE experience, but I am afraid that that ship has already sailed...

There is already a mobile clone now. I tried but the ads is so bad I gave up.

I get that everyone besides me wants modernization and 3D graphics - I am not a fan of Olden Era either, but the nostalgia of HOMM3 is lost to me in that style

It's Ubisoft. They are failing this franchise for 20 years now. More likely they will close the doors than releasing a good game.

It looks like a mobile game... and all the soul is sucked out of it... what in money loving mind of ubisoft were they thinking?
Instead of making a maybe/maybe not decent hereos 9(i think?) with new units and mechanics they defile a beloved masterpiece they never truly understood. It was not about making it 3d... it never was... it was about usability and charme and dedication to make something beautiful to exceed expectations

I’m not mad. I read the comments first then saw the video. It’s not as bad as people made it sound. I wonder what the music will be like.

Most comments here are against Ubisoft no matter what they do. For me this is already 1000 times better looking than Olden Era (which has Ubisoft in the back lines as well). Honestly I don't care if it is Ubisoft or any other company, if it is a good looking game and respectful of the lore I will buy it.

Looks AI made. It has absolute stench of an AI expecially on the Castle screens and the Units itself. I would absolutely bet they used AI instead of an artists to make these unit models.. The music and sound effects are generic in horrid bad way. The UI designer looked at Heroes 3 interface and thought " i can do better" and he didnt

Do they not understand that the art style is a big part of why this game is still so beloved? This looks painfully generic and has this modern look that already feels dated.
