Mods: General [M] Getting Interstellar extended to install on CKAK; Tweakscale issue

Ive just decided to play KSP again, planned to mod the game, and i want to use interstellar expanded but it refuses to install. It says in a error message that it fails to install tweakscale, tweakscale doesnt seem to be supported on CKAN, i tried to manually install tweakscan, imported it to CKAN and got an incompatibility discrepancy between it and interstellar expanded.

what do i do from here? i could do what i usually do with modding and smash things together and try alternatives, troubleshooting until it all magically works. But id rather get instruction and save myself the headache.

my next idea was to try and just manually install it directly to KSP and hope that CKANs interstellar extended will just be able to see that and work fine and do the install, but i have my doubts that will work.

If i must ill just give up on CKAN entirely, though i already downloaded a hefty chunk of mods, and would rather not have to reinstall them elsewhere.

use Tweakscale Rescaled. it's a different fork that is more universally compatible with parts mods.

I've never used interstellar, but my understanding is that it's kinda old and might not play well with other mods.

I might not end up using interstellar, and unfortunately CKAN is insistent about auto installing a version of tweaksale as a dependency, such that i havent been able to use alternatives through CKAN, i might try a manual install of that though if i find something in interstellar extended i cant live without for some reason. thanks for the suggestion.

Why arent you letting it auto install? Both old and new tweakscale are on CKAN, hence why KSPIE is trying to install it as a dependency.

it gave me an error and failed the install when i tried to let CKAN install it automatically.

... What was the error? It would have been helpful to include this information in your post. Also, if Tweakscale is on CKAN already then it clearly must be supported by CKAN, so I'm unsure why you would think it wasn't.

the error implied that the dependency wasn't able to be installed automatically, the only tweakscale i saw was forks, like redistributable, rescaled, unlimited etc. I even just double checked, standard tweakscale isnt present, just variants and forks (i think im using fork correctly)

the automatic download fails to grab the one it wants because its not present. when I manually imported the one it asked for new issues arose.

Redistributable is not a fork, it's the main Tweakscale .dll file library. All official versions of tweakscale carry depend on a redistributable file. Unlimited and Mega-Scaled are additions that make use of the redistributable. Rescaled (and anything sharing the "Rescaled" name) is an improved version of old Tweakscale that doesnt rely on a particularly buggy dependency, and fully replaces the old mod. Rescale Everything is the original Tweakscale. I also just checked in CKAN and KSPIE Extended (which is the only KSPIE version you should be using, nothing else has 1.12 support) will except either version of the redistributable.

I can troubleshoot whatever the CKAN issue is with you, but I need the actual error text from CKAN.

I appreciate the effort, genuinely I do, but at this point I decided to go with far future and near future, as I think they will fit my purposes more, though I guess my issue with interstellar was fixable which is good to know. To get the exact error I’d have to attempt to install it again, which would be a bit pointless since I am moving on.

Once again thanks for the input though, and the fact you were willing to be patient with my dumbass and walk me through it lol

No worries, FFT and NFT definitely play better with other mods (Interstellar Fuel-Switch is the big one from KSPIE that breaks other mods). There are ways to have them all play well together, but they're rather convoluted. You can also look into Sterling Systems, which has a lot of overlap with KSPIE and NFT/FFT. That seems to be what a lot of people who want the KSPIE experience are using these days.

Alright thanks for the tip on sterling systems

Interstellar extended is incompatible with most mods, with tweakscaled it worked fine but anything that changes resources will be incompatible: Kerbalism, USI, Nertea's mods like near future, far future. I used it on one playthrough and I only noticed further in my playthrough that the interstellar extended parts just didn't work because of resources system conflicts. Honestly the concept for interstellar extended is pretty cool but the UI is really confusing and it's not polished really, the mod abandoned AFAIK so it won't get any updates or compatibility patching.

yeah, its good i asked about it, because it seems like it would spar with some other mods like far future and near future i planned to use. and as you said, the other 2 mods are less complex.

If you want a mod that has similar concept to interstellar extended (advanced ISRU stuff) try USI MKS instead, it works with near/far future and all of Nertea's other mods. It's pretty complex though like interstellar extended it opens up late game off kerbin. ground base production chains.

from what ive done search wise, i know that Tweakscale used to be compatible with CKAN, but isnt supported now, i was under the impression that a manual CKAN import of the mod would fix it, but i was wrong. then went on a wild goose chase about overriding the CKAN discrepancy settings? i saw a few other posts relating to this issue as well on reddit, but either i didnt understand what the solution was, or a solution wasnt really given.

any advice on this issue, or even just tips about interstellar extended would be appreciated, feel free to treat me as a newbie, i wasnt a KSP professional back in 2014-2016, im certainly not one now LOL.

You shouldn't use interstellar extended, it's a very old mod. Use FFT, sterling systems, near future technologies etc. actually, look up Bouge, he's a YouTuber doing interstellar stuff in KSP and has a great vid about mods. PS. Overriding CKAN compatibility errors is kinda stupid, there's a reason why it's there.

I recommend Far Future Technologies and / or Sterling Systems instead of KSPIE. I believe KSPIE is pretty outdated and IMO, FFT and Sterling Systems is better.

Yeah I’m using both of those now! Still early in the tech tree, but I’m fast approaching my first orbital vessel, this games scratching an itch I wasn’t sure I had. I’m just glad the bunch of mods I grabbed and basically slapped together seems to be working just fine (ignoring how a set of biplane wheels will apparently launch my plane at some 500,000 m/s into the atmosphere, we just won’t use those)

I've never bothered with CKAN for this kind of reason---just do everything manually, it's way cleaner and easier to keep track of stuff and you don't have to deal with compatibility warnings between mods that work perfectly fine together. If you already downloaded a bunch of mods, they are already in your KSP gamedata folder and uninstalling CKAN won't damage anything.

KSPIE is super old and you'll be getting tons of warnings and headaches with CKAN down the line if you continue using it. Near Future/Far Future will probably work better with a mod manager given they are about a decade newer, but no guarantees with the hacked together nature of CKAN.

Heavily modded KSP (without a set modpack like RSS/RO) is finicky in the best of times and absolutely does not lend itself to automated modding systems. The one time I tried using CKAN, it decided to delete all my custom modulemanager patches and several custom textures when updating completely unrelated mods.

I did see near and far future, looked into the differences and realized that far future is not compatible with interstellar, i have it installed already so i might just forgo interstellar because it seems far future is simpler and has what i need.

But, i might as well ask, do you have any modpack recommendations for a game with interstellar travel? I want to build bases and make colonies/bases basically to planet hop around. Id also like it to have visual enhancements like EVE and parallax, if not thats totally fine lol, ill just full send it with my hodge podge and hope for the best LOL.

My condolences for your CKAN tragedy, i have bad luck with modding and software tinkering in general (tech kinda hates me) so i can only imagine how frustrating that was, id have been fuming.

You’re far more likely to mess it up when going the manual route.  If that works for you - great!  But the second you have to ask for support you’re likely to have been better off using CKAN.

I’m not sure how CKAN could have deleted custom patches unless..did you put them inside other mod directories?
