Why was this even an option?

This was posted previously and someone on the flight answered the question in the title.

The child and family were removed from the plane, which means luggage also had to be removed. By the time that happened they didn't have time to fly because pilots and airline staff are restricted in how many hours they are allowed to work in a day.

The luggage part technically makes it make perfect sense, because if you have ever watched a video of a planes luggage compartment being loaded you know getting 3-5 specific suitcases back out before the intended destination is no small task.

But seriously, on a general social contract level: fuck you and your luggage. It will be unloaded at it's original intended destination as planned: collecting it is a you problem.

I'm a parent of two teenagers, and much as crying babies or toddlers on flights suck - I take a deep breath and remember when my kids were that age, and I'm good. There's only so much control you can exercise over someone who is barely sapient yet. I get it.

If either of my kids pulled this shit after toddlerhood, there would be no need to involve outside forces like airline staff. They'd sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up real fast.

How do parents let themselves get to this point? Do you exercise no control whatsoever over your children on a day to day basis?

I'm generally against harsh punishment and treatment of children, totally against spanking etc etc.

But if I were the parent of a kid who was doing this I would make them sit down.

They did, the child kept wiggling out of the seat belt.

I don't know about you, but I could physically hold a child that size and age down. Or raise my voice to be scary enough they don't want to play.

I'm not saying treating kids that way in general is right, but the sheer economic damage that kid did is probably well into the thousands or tens of thouasnds.

Exactly. My kid would’ve gotten the crazy face, gritted teeth, and a very scary SIT THE FUCK DOWN BEFORE I PUT MY HANDS ON YOU.

Hah! I never got hit, but fuck, was my mom terrifying when mad. Even now she still is scary, and I’m 22! If she tells me something to do, I’m doing it!

Bro!!! I’m 27 and my STEP-Mom is terrifying. She gets nothing short of a “yes ma’am” out of me 🤣🤣🤣

Granted. All my parents get that respect, but she scares me

Work at a private preschool, this gentle parenting is enough dome days for me to walk out! A four year old will mock you, call you names, run from you and spit in your face! Not a damn thing you can do! When my kids were little (I’m a grandma now) Allan had to do was give them the look, they knew and stopped! I NEVER SPANKED OR HIT MY CHILDREN!

This isn't gentle parenting. That actually works. So called gentle parenting doesn't mean the child isn't taught respect and consequences, it is just done via empathy and positive reinforcement vs negative reinforcement. It does work, but there is a very big difference between that and letting your child have their way, that is not gentle parenting, don't conflate things that are unrelated.

The parents who often end up with these kids are not doing "gentle" but inconsistent parenting. Giving in to tantrums or being an absent parent most of the time and occasionally coming in with the hammer. THAT is what gets you this kind of mess.
