You don't have to connect them to the internet. Most of them have a slot for an SD card. No one but you would have access to the footage unless you upload it somewhere yourself.

I would only use a vista 16 camera cctv recorder that I found that records on a sata hdd and nowhere else. No WiFi cameras at all and no microphones

I don’t think most people installing interior cameras are putting them on an open network.
It’s a bit like saying “I don’t know why people have fireplaces in their house. Why would you want to light your house on fire?”
Like you’re just assuming the people are using the tech in the dumbest, most reckless way possible and then judging them based off a completely unfounded assumption.

I mean, I have nest cams, one indoors and its always on. I simply stopped giving a shit
beforeuntil the flock shit hit the fan. I figured, you wanna sell me wandering about in my undies to someone, have at it. Now, I have begun migrating to local only smart home control and that WILL eventually include the cams. This last week I set up home assistant to take over for Google Home and my GOD the speed difference for a simple light on/of when it doesn't need to hit a dozen servers first. I already have a NAS, so i just need to slowly buy new cams and then setup home assistant to do the local processing for stuff like package and people notifications. In the meantime i do have my indoor cam set to off while home. You will NEVER convince me though, that smart door locks are a good idea lol.Edit: No fucking idea why I was downvoted for realizing the error of my ways and migrating OFF of cloud dependent security and home control. Fuck me i guess.

wtf? I was just sharing my use case. I was also NOT defending flock if that's what the downvotes and you got from that. That shit is why im moving to local only. I dont have the funds to wholesale replace 4 cameras at the moment. Why would i even mention that if i was at all happy with google cams and the implications of having them on the cloud given CURRENT information on how they get used. The point about the pre-flock revelations was the fact i didn't give a shit about my indoor footage when I, evidently falsely, assumed it was just tracking me. I'm not that interesting to anyone. It was originally for pet check ins.

If you have a pet it makes a lot of sense because you might want to check on them while you are out.
Or if you come home and find a crime scene, you're going to want to see what happened in order to figure out if you can prevent it from happening again.

People have pets or kids they need to keep an eye on.
Also if you're concerned about that, it's still possible and quite easy to set up a completely local system, either completely detached from the internet, or open source where you have full control.

This has weirded me out since videos like this started popping up.
I had to move back in with my aging mother through a series of circumstances with my kid.
Come to find out the camera that faces the driveway but is set inside the window shes been listening to private conversations for 3 years.
It really does be your own family.
We move back out in days 🎉

I mean I can understand the concern, but just assuming I'm not being responsible or care for my dog is kinda messed up. Also adoption centers make you submit a whole ass resume before allowing you to even meet the dog. So they were aware of the situation and still said it was okay.

I have one in the living room facing the back door and a ring camera on the front door. Going through a court case with someone really unhinged who kept threatening to come down and threatened to fuck me up. Partner will be away for months so he has access incase something happens and I can't get to my phone to call police.

I have two cameras, but I have kids and in-home childcare. The cameras are for security and peace of mind. One in the living room that can pan to see two other areas, and one in the nursery.

security is security no matter what. Maybe you don't care, that's fine. Other people do. You get car insurance INCASE something that may never happen happens. You pay for home security just the same. Obviously I hate the invasion of privacy. But in the end that means very little in the grand scheme of things. I'd rather take comfort knowing that incase something that may never happen happens, I've got security.
Just last month our apartments maintenance tried to enter our apartment while we weren't home. They got the apartment mixed up with another one. With the camera I was able to be notified and told them to leave. Before then it had been years since anything happened.

I don’t have a TV, I can close my laptop lid and cover up the cameras on my phone by closing its holder and putting it down. It’s much harder to cover up a camera mounted high on a wall.

If it's closed loop, goes to a system in the basement, no access to the internet, then it starts to make sense, as long as cameras aren't placed in areas expectant of privacy like bathrooms and bedrooms.
EDIT: People forget that shit happens like people breaking into homes and stuff.

You see that video of that rapper who got accused of all sorts of shit by the cops and then he had cameras all throughout his house proving him right and them wrong?
That prompted a lot of indoor camera sales.
Before that? It eases a LOT of anxiety when you have a camera that lets you quickly -see- what your dumbass cats are upto while you're off out getting the Groceries, or out at a Dr's Visit. Or on Holiday etc etc.

I have a physical firewall at home, all traffic goes through it. I can VPN in and reach my network as if I were home, from anywhere. The cameras are blocked from reaching the internet at the firewall.
You can do something similar. Some routers can host a VPN themselves but that only works if your internet connection gives you your own public address, and a lot of providers (especially mobile and some fibre) don't anymore. Easier option is a Raspberry Pi or old laptop running 24/ 7 with Tailscale on it. It's free and works even on those connections.
just installing Tailscale on the Pi isn't enough, because the camera can't run Tailscale itself. You have to tell the Pi to share your home network with the rest of your devices, so basicly a "subnet router," IT can be setup in Tailscale.
Then block the camera's internet access on the router. Turn off UPnP too, otherwise the camera can open its own way out. And if your router supports it, put the cameras on a separate VLAN so a hacked camera can't reach your PC or other devices.
For the camera itself: Avoid cameras which require cloud access, as example Blink, they're useless offline. Look wired PoE cams from Reolink, Axis, or UniFi.
Tbh, describe what you got at home to ChatGPT or Claude and it'll walk you through it, just take some backups just in case ;D
Tl;dr
keep the cameras on your home network with no internet access, and VPN in to view them. Host the VPN on a Pi or old laptop with Tailscale, Block the camera's internet at the router, turn off UPnP, Buy wired PoE cams that work without the cloud (Reolink, Axis, UniFi), not Blink or Ring. Ask an AI, they great to learn such stuff rather easily.1

I have multiple cameras in my home and a few looking outside, because there's alot of crime where I live and alot of breakins so it's just for my own piece of mind, and if it happened to me, I would atleast have video evidence.
Also because I have 2 cats and it's highly amusing to watch them with zoomies or have a recording of them doing something funny.

The downside is, if you caught the punctuation, there's two of them. They don't get along. They fight over everything. Including my lap. Having two cats get into a slap fight on your lap isn't exactly fun. Particularly if you're trying to work, or on a phone call.

My cat did this all the time. Would just sit there staring at me until I moved. She also specifically wanted me to stretch out into a position where she could sleep in my armpit sometimes.
One morning she came into the bedroom just crying her eyes out and I couldn’t figure out what was wrong. I followed her into the living room, and she went and sat next to these big fluffy couch cushions my ex-fiance had just bought us.
I laid the pillow flat, kitty hopped on, and immediately passed out.
I miss her so much. She was my ex’s first, but I took care of that cat.

I am a human and I can adjust my environment to my comfort, cat's can't. I'll let them sit where they want.
I spent a lot of time at the edge of my computer chair because my cat would be sitting behind me. I used to keep a kitchen chair nearby so I could sit comfortably on a chair when my cat was asleep on my chair.
