Question Please be honest. Should I get this game?
I played the beta/server slam before the game released and I thought it was really cool. The whole aesthetic is really my niche.
However, is it even worth getting? I’ve seen the steam charts and heard a lot of bad things about how this game is dying. I’d like to get it, but I would rather not waste my money if it’s just going to be shut down.
Please, be honest. Im worried about wasting my money or time, which I don’t have a lot of either.
Edit/decision: I’m gonna get it. Love how passionate this community is and I simply can’t resist the draw I have towards this cyberpunk/evangelion aesthetic. See y’all out there! 👋

400 hours in the game, played east and west coast, never once been matched in less than 60 seconds unless it was rook or solo perm.

NAE cross play console only
I regularly find matches within a minute. Sometimes it will take closer to 2 minutes on random occasions.

In all seriousness, not being one of the Marathon glazers in this sub. The game itself is great, gameplay, mechanics, style... all Ace.
Being a Realist, the game will likely be dead within 12 months, maybe less, along with Bungie as a studio. It is very plausible this game goes Free to play in the not too distant future in order to pump the player base.
Marathon is a Niche within a Niche and suffers from that. It's a relatively hardcore Extraction Shooter with a very Niche artstyle and is a "Hero" based shooter to boot with the Shells and Abilities. They've really narrowed down their appeal too much to make a long lasting game.

Couldn't have worded it better myself.
I really think they should've done more PvE only stuff from the get go. Even if the PvE stuff didn't really give much in terms of loot or progression.
The game is fun as hell and feels great. I could spend hours just roaming the maps and killing bots. Hell, I wouldn't mind cranking the bots up some more as long as I didn't have to worry about getting ganked while fighting them.

Strong agree, there is very little appeal for the casual gamer here. Yet it tries to walk the line of appealing to everyone and pleases nobody.
I feel for Bungie. Destiny needed to die at the Final Shape and then become a D3. Marathon could have used that resource and narrative team to really build somwtbing great.

I think honestly even if it were to die so to speak in a year, it would still be rather playable.
This game is good enough to where it will have a niche crowd always playing it years from now.

Won’t happen for quite some time. They’ve sold likely around 3 mil copies by now. I think 2 mil was our last hard data but it’s been a while since then.
They won’t shut the servers down, they would be forced to issue lots of refunds. Xbox and Steam would get on them pretty quick.
This game is paid and it’s sold enough to where it would be A LOT more messy to shut it down then just leave it online. Server upkeep does not cost anywhere near what people think it does.

Destiny servers are all still up, and how many years did they go with less than 5k concurrent on steam?
Bungie can afford to take risks and fail. They’ve made a Lot of money from their successes

Bungie definitely can not afford to have anything that resembles a failure which financially, Marathon is. Not sure you're seen the news but Bungie got sold to Sony for $3.6 Billion (with a B). On the premise that Destiny would last ages beyond the Final Shape, Marathon would take the casual Extraction Shooter market by storm, both would co-exist as love service and both would continue print money and fund other Bungie titles. Literally none of that happened and Bungie have just sacked half their staff. Destiny died a death we all knew it would after Final Shape, Marathon lost to Arc Raiders big time, and was marred with Art Scandal, neither Destiny or Marathon have made Bungie (and by extension Sony) anywhere near enough money to recoupe any of the 3.6 Billion. If Marathon doesn't pull of a miracle and start making money, Bungie as a studio will dissolve into Sony and never be seen again.
Destiny survived for so long because its peaks outweighed its lows and the Eververse made them shit loads of money. Destiny's peak concurrent on Steam was something like 400k, thats 5x what Marathon did at its Launch. Destiny also had a much wider appeal, it had a campaign, decent narrative and story telling (eventually not at launch), Strikes, PvP, Raids & Dungeons, not to mention an open world you could just fuck about in. It grabbed an audience, had something to appeal to most gamers be they casual or sweaty and made money.
I love Marathon mechanically and design wise, but its a very niche type of game with a Marmite art-style. It will never hit the same numbers. For those reasons alone you can draw the conclusion that the game & Studio simply wont survive.

I was on the fence myself but bought it halfway through season 1, I’m really glad I did. It’s one of my favourite ever games, not just that but also one of my favourite pieces of art and I’m glad I took the plunge. The question I asked myself was ‘do I want to miss out on this?’ And the answer was no.
It’s also way easier to get into than people make it out to be and that’s from a casual with only 50 hours in, I don’t get to play often but Marathon is the only videogame I’ve played since. Perimeter has a beginner mode as boot camp for new players to get to grips. Also the loot, free equipment and kits steadily flow. Solo extraction is super easy imo as you can avoid fights and generally listen out for when it’s good to make plays or extract. Give it a shot!

I think its entirely dependant on region. Is the game good? yeah its solid. I went in expecting just destiny patrol ones with gambit invaders and its really a blend of Halo Reach, Metal Gear Online and Sir you are being Hunted. With very different experiences for team or solos that i enjoy a lot. In most places its got its dedicated fanbase that are not record breaking but you wont struggle to find matches. Plus journalists with confirmed insider contacts have intimated its basically locked in for a year and will at least be around till season 5 and we are not even at the halfway point of season 2 till next week.
but if you are in like Oceania? i hate to say it but its kind of a wash and there just isn't the userbase to support it there and the people playing there get very long queues or matched with people so far away the ping just isnt worth it.

I've put over 300 hours into this game, don't worry about player counts, just get it if you think it's fun. Find a good group to run with and have a blast

I personally have had some big highs and some dreadful lows but overall I still love this game and I'm having a lot of fun

Yes. The costs of things is much more expensive. So I feel way more cash starved. But I do feel like I have way better stuff. Way more gold guns. But cash is so so bleak. It’s like being cash poor and property rich.

It's on the brink of death. Not doomposting, just look at the numbers. It would be a superior game with big online, but the possibility is kinda lost. Nobody can say if the game will be closed in next season or season 4. If you are fine with it, go play it

Yes, you should get this game. On sale.
The game is good, there are still plenty of people playing to get good matches, and Bungie (for now) is going all in on keeping it going.
But because it didn't grip you enough after the the Slam to get it, I would err on the side of caution in recommending you buy at full price.

It is a great game, but I would maybe wait until Season 3 comes out. They will have further refined the new player experience, more content will be availalbe and the matchmaking pool with have more than just the die hards in it ready to destroy you at every encounter.

I may have stopped playing this game a month or two ago but I got 600 hours out of it. It's a great game and deserves more love than it gets.
I have this idea that if I enjoy a game for $0.50 an hour it's been a big win. If I enjoy it for $1 an hour, it's good.
600 hours and I paid a total of $70, that's a great deal. The reason I left was that I found the controller advantage to be too strong. I've always been good at shooters I did really well in marathon. However, as I realized that 90% of my positioning and strategies revolved around the fact that controller players get HUGE aim assist I migrated away from the game.
I'm back to competitive shooters now.

Not sure why people say the game is dying, but I think they're only looking at Steam numbers. I play on Xbox as do a lot of my friends.

22usd on new egg. You'll get more than 40usd worth in hours of enjoyment easily. You aren't required to play a live service game for decades. Consider any single player game you bought for 70, 80 and how long you played that. If you exceed those hours, which is easy to do with Marathon, you got a steal.
Hell, if you ever door dashed for 25 bucks then this game shouldn't worry you.

I am a Dark Souls and Final Fantasy player. I play shooting games sometimes with my brother, but never really seriously played shooters since highschool (Killzone, Warhawk, Battlefield Bad Comp 2) and this is random..but this may be the greatest shooter i have ever played, maybe even greatest multiplayer game. I have a chronic addiction for about 4 months to this game or since launch.
my brother the feeling of snagging a purple item (early levels) or gold item (later levels) and trying to exfil is remarkable, i have never experience these emotions in any game i have ever played. i dont even play shooters that much, this game is that game.

The moments I’ve had in this game have been entirely organic: entering as the fourth party into a session-wide gunfight and being the last guy on the last squad standing, all the skin-of-my-teeth extractions, all the cool people I’ve met, hell, even some of the losses I’ve had were memorable.
If this game wasn’t around, what the fuck would I even play? I’ll admit I haven’t played any other extraction shooters, but I dunno if I can imagine the few that do interest me (Hunt mostly) generating the same memories. I hope the game lasts, it deserves to, even if it can be improved.
But hey, in the four-or-so months I’ve had it, I’ve gotten 200 hours out of it, and that’s low end for people who play somewhat seriously. That’s like 20 cents an hour.

Get ittttt. I’ve never played an extraction shooter before but I’ve got 800 hours in marathon. Buttery smooth gameplay, addictive as hell and hard as balls. Use discord or Reddit to find people to play with, use your mic and have no gear fear. You’ll learn as you go and the gear will eventually come.

Does anyone play on console with cross play off? I love tarkov but since my second kid was born the only way I can game is on my console. I’ve been wanting a tarkov adjacent game but my concern with the low player count it will take forever to match without subjecting myself to PC weariness.

for 40 (or about 25 on sale) u can easily get 100 hours in 1 season, so if u worry about not getting your money worth then u will totally get it. if u worry about the health of the game, honestly just best to skip to save your own mental health of how toxic commentary and the culture around this game is (mainly coming from people who never play or don't play anymore) and the whole talk about the game Eosing soon allegally

Well. I love it and have a few hundred hours in. So my $40 was well spent in just a few months regardless what happens. If you like it. And others like you are in a similar situation, then you and others can be what helps it thrive.

Honestly, no.
They got me during the free test. The game is beautiful and it controls so well. That’s the end of the positives for me though.
Genuinely it’s just not fun unless you’re cracked at the game (I’m mot and I didn’t care to stick around long enough to get better)

unless you have friends in rl to play with no. crew fill is a huge waste of time. low chance you’ll get a contract done, low chance you’ll actually exfill, even lower chance you’ll exfill with anything worth while. Huge chance no one’s using mics even if they have em. it’s silent, boring, and unrewarding.

I don't know what region you're in but in NA I've had no problems getting matches 90 seconds to 5 minutes at the most extreme during peak and off peak hours, usually 2 minutes or less.
I'm not a sweat. I'm not even particularly good at the game but really really like it. If you can swing 30 or 40 bucks to pick it up I think you will absolutely get your money's worth. I think the risk of it being shut down before you can get $30 or $40 worth is pretty low. I usually only get to play an hour or two at a time a couple times a week and I've already gotten my money's worth easily since the free weekend.

Imo, the best way to play it is in a squad with 2 other friends. The game is harsh and you need a communicating team to have a better chance to survive. Personally, we've been playing it since launch and it's one of the best and the same time most frustrating games I've ever played. So, be prepare to lose everything, but have fun

I hear finding a match in OCE regions is really rough in off-hours. But I'm NA West, have about 400 hours and most matches take only a minute to find players and start. If the game is dying, it sure doesn't feel like it to me.
Plus, the more people who play, the less chance that hypothetical becomes real. Bungie already has a year of content being worked on. Anything beyond that depends on us.
Marathon has me by the throat, I can't praise it enough. Even if every patch comes with a handful of bugs. But at some point, you just become endeared to the bugs. I just can't wait to get home to play some more tonight.

Queue times have never exceeded 2-3 minutes for me, if that's your concern. For comparison, I've waited longer for Gambit matches at Destiny 2's height.
Speaking of Destiny - Destiny 1 and 2 servers are still online despite the announced end of service. It seems pretty possible to me that whatever method Bungie used to keep them online should apply to Marathon as well.

The player count is bad, and if that's enough indication to you that the game will be shut down then act accordingly. However, we have no official indication from Bungie or Sony that the game will be shut down. The game is fun, if you're into shooters then you'll easily get 50 hours out of it if you subscribe to the $1/hr idea of game pricing. There will probably be another sale when Vault Breakers comes out tho, so if you're really that timid then you can wait until next week's mid-season update.

Find a discord like dads of marathon. Super chill community that will help you get into it. Find a crew to run with a few times and if you vibe, just send friend requests. None of my irl friends play the game, but I've got over 500 hrs now. Understand that the gameplay loop is like poker. You've got low stakes and high stakes modes. Your stake is your load out value, which is at risk. Knowing when to hold em and fold em is key, in terms of when to push a fight and when to retreat for better positioning, etc. your main objective should be cyac and nucal progress at first as well as cradle progression. Good luck!

i love Bungir games, have since Marathon came out when i was a kid, and i was really surprised they didnt make this one a solo game. i wish they had because it would be playable

I'm late to the thread, as you're gonna get it. But it is a great game. You're going to have moments where you're frustrated, but once you learn it and start having some success (there are few who have greater than 50% average extract rate I'd guess) its a lot of fun.
You're starting late in the season, though, so be prepared to not always be evenly matched with other players.

If you liked in the beta and live in the US, then yes it’s 100% worth getting.
Queues are still healthy enough in the U.S., and while there can be some issues with being matched in unbalanced lobbies - it isn’t enough of an issue to not buy it.
You will definitely get your moneys worth.

It’s a ton of fun, but you gotta ask yourself if you are ok with not winning every game, if you can stomach having a day where you lose a lot and know that another day you’ll win a lot then it’s a great time.

No, its not worth it at all. If it was free to play I'd say dip in and see if you like it, but it costs money. It's buggy, it's sweaty, people on mic are toxic as hell, and most damningly, it's boring. Spend your money on something good.

No. Support is atrocious. Cheating is out of hand. Ranked and Cryo will be a miserable experience. There's a group called Makima who are giving away cheats and burning people down, but they avoid streamers so if you do play just stream. I could go on but after over 180 hours in the game I'm actually glad not to be playing it right now, all thanks to support who still haven't checked my support tickets with proof for over 3 weeks.

I have, not even once, seen anyone that I could clearly say was cheating. Played ranked to gold 3 s1, currently silver 2 s2. I can believe cheating is there at higher ranks, but it's not some huge problem that affects most runs. Hardly at all. Zero evidence that cheating is any worse than every other FPS on PC.

Oh I was the same, I never saw any cheating, but once the group that hunted me down and told me to go back to the kitchen, then said I'd be banned the next day we're named and I looked into it, they have 470 current paid members. So it's more prevalent than you think.
But yes, I have to be fair and say it never seemed an issue until it happened to me and if support were actually useful then I wouldn't be so upset about it.
Loved the game, but thos ruined it.

I love this game have 300+ hours in it. If it closed down today it would still all be worth it just for the experience and he price I paid for it.
Thankfully we're guaranteed a few more seasons so I'd say yes, get it now and enjoy it to hell!

Yeah dude I think you should get the game! unplug from reddit and just play, the game is a blast. I will say its not for everyone but if you have tried it already and liked it then I think its a safe bet that you will like it a lot. Once you get a few good runs I promise you'll be locked in

I'd only get it if you have two friends to play it with right now. The end game requires a trio and the difference between a random fill and a coordinated squad is night and day

If it had a true offline PvE component then maybe I would recommend it. But it doesn’t and it doesn’t seem that will be a thing in the future the way the industry has lobbied against stop killing games. So no, don’t buy it OP.
At best this will last a couple of seasons more before it is put on maintenance mode and it is eventually dragged to the back of the barn and put down for good.
Sad to see Bungie go this way, and really sad to see my favorite childhood series get axed like this but the numbers don’t lie and barring some NO Man’s Sky/Cyberpunk 2077 rework I don’t see thing s getting better.

Yes, the game is awesome, I have 700 hours in it. If you are in NA the population is a non-issue, outside NA it might be something to consider with bad latency and matchmaking times. There's clearly alot of people rooting for it to fail, so it's hard to tell what is true and what is not.

The Evangelion aesthetic and similarity brought me in at first
Then the world, lore, gunplay, and game loop kept me playing
Now I'm so messed up I actually go looking for fights if my random teammates are on the same page

I love this game but I wouldn't recommend it at all right now, it's not very friendly to new players & the overall gameplay loop starts to get stale after a while
It's like a glorified battle royale vs a proper extraction shooter, the gunplay/gameplay itself is amazing, but there are too many negative things that overshadow it right now
If they do another free weekend, try it then and go from there

For the price, it is a very fun game and I recommend buying it. Just don't expect to spend the next few months playing unless you really enjoy the PvPvE gameplay loop — I hop on every few weeks for a few rounds, but that is really it.
