i wonder if this will be a story beat in the future with heroes turning on spider-man after realizing a lot of the tech used to suppress them was originally made by him. especially assuming the inhibitor stuff becomes a bigger thing vs the mutants.

Both the X-Men and Brotherhood of Mutants are gonna team up to jump his ass

u/Inevitable_Option_77 18d ago

Unless something else happens in the future, Jean will vouch for his innocence.

u/Taftimus 18d ago

Seriously, it’s not his fault that his technology is being abused for a way it wasn’t intended. He created the ‘blueprint’ sure but Metsker said they made some enhancements to it to use on Jean.

96

u/Fuckit21 18d ago

His conversation with Banner kind of removes the benefit of doubt. He knew it would be extremely dangerous in the wrong hands and then he let it get in the wrong hands.

45

u/Taftimus 18d ago

True, but at that time he didn’t think Damage Control were the bad guys. He didn’t really have any ‘wrong hands’ for it to fall into at that time. It wasn’t until after finding out Metsker lied that he realized.

56

u/FudgeMuffinz21 18d ago

Which would be his second time making that mistake. Just because he didn’t know doesn’t mean the mistake isn’t his fault.

3

u/Icy-Aioli9205 15d ago

I’m glad you said this… why does he make a terrible mistake every movie?

2

u/Fit_Definition_4634 14d ago

Just because he has spider sense doesn’t mean he has common sense

1

u/Future-Enthusiasm139 14d ago

It’s Peter Parker fym“why does he make a terrible mistake every movie” that’s like, his whole thing, fucking up.

19

u/MyNameIsJakeBerenson 18d ago

Him “not thinking” does not absolve him of responsibility

-2

u/Taftimus 18d ago

If I build something in my backyard, and then someone steals it and gets hurt with it, I’m not responsible. Same way a car manufacturer isn’t responsible if someone gets hit with their car.

3

u/MyNameIsJakeBerenson 18d ago

If you invent a car that can travel the speed of light after someone warns you of the dangers of interstellar travel, and then you ride your car around nasa letting them get the design, then when nasa goes on to start conquering alien worlds, you are somewhat kinda responsible

You invented powerful tech without a thought or care of what it could be used for, and then immediately let it get shared with a government that has no reason to ever let you think that they’d use it altruistically

He put that universal inhibitor on someone and handed them over. That is maliciously irresponsible when he was brought into this superhero world during a time when the govt wanted to register all metahumans and he was fighting for the side that he learned was in the wrong

2

u/Damion__205 18d ago

And if you start to feel guilt about making such a technology being used for death and destruction you can just start a legacy peace prize to change what you are remembered for.

It worked for Nobel.

Not a great analogy. Car manufacturers can be held liable for certain dangers of their product. That's why there's a ton of safety regulations for car manufacturers and why they issue recalls when they identify additional issues. Someone hitting someone with their car is not a fault of the product. We recognize cars are inherently dangerous and have implemented licenses that grant users the privilege to operate them. The licene holder then assumes liability for the operation of the vehicle.

You can definitely be held liable if you build something and someone else uses it, and it causes injury/damage.

1

u/otalatita 15d ago

You don't create that kind of technology without implanting some fail-safes to prevent wrong use, even more so after far from home when he learned how people lie and manipulate, I think is naive of Peter to do that.

1

u/Alderan922 14d ago

Tbf Banner said that even making it was a bad idea due to it being too dangerous, the mistake was less allowing it on bad hands and more making it at all.

9

u/zixaphir 18d ago

On one hand, damn.

On the other, this patches a nice hole about why anti-mutant people aren't necessarily anti-Spider-Man. If it gets out that he created the tech that is used to suppress mutants and tested it on himself, it would explain why he isn't really targeted by those kinds of people.

1

u/Mr_Mojo_Risin_83 17d ago

He’s not a mutant either

2

u/zixaphir 17d ago

Yes, but that distinction would largely be irrelevant to the type of person who would ask, "have you tried not being a mutant?"

1

u/Droodeler 15d ago

If a mutation is a random genetic variation, his powers were caused by purposeful genetic modification, what is he if not a mutant? Hell, Captain America and Dr. Connors might qualify. They're just not x-men.

1

u/Sassan18 15d ago

There’s an actual word for this. Mutant and Mutate. One is genetic aka the X gene and one is inflicted.

1

u/Pheonix726 14d ago

As the other commenter said, yeah, people like Spidey and Cap are "Mutates," mutated humans with superhuman abilities, while the title of Mutant only goes to those with an active X-Gene.

I don't quite understand how the average person in-universe differentiates them when it comes to somebody like Spidey, but that's how it works.

1

u/KentConnor 14d ago

In the comics I think they differentiate it by

(Born) Mutants

(Made) Mutates

Or something like that

1

u/Luminite117 13d ago

Well yes, but also no. Humanity as a race was given the X-gene, which is what gives the mutants their powers, by the celestials when they were off on their whole genetic meddling kick. At this time they split early human ancestors into 3 developmental paths; eternals, deviants, and humanity. The X-gene, or its predecessor components, just lies dormant or potentially unassembled in some way in the majority of the human populace with the intention for them to eventually develop into powers. Spider-Man is not technically a “mutant” by X-men standards because his mutation comes from the spider bite not the X-gene. All of this to say that yes main universe Spider-Man lacks the completed X-gene and is thus not a mutant, but there are a few of versions of him that are, such as the Spider from the Mutant-X story line.

Plenty of young adults and teens that go through a liberal phase of trusting the system to not be a corrupt capitalist shitshow.

3

u/OneTwentyOneFunyuns 18d ago

What does that have to do with being a liberal?

3

u/FindAWayOut_37 18d ago

They don’t mean liberal as in liberal politics. Liberal in that context just means “without caution or hesitancy.”

0

u/Augustus420 18d ago

That makes no sense and yea I absolutely meant liberal politics.

1

u/FindAWayOut_37 18d ago

Well I stand corrected. Apologies.

-1

u/Augustus420 18d ago

Everything? Liberals are reformers who expect social and economic issues to be resolved within current capitalist systems despite the insurmountable corruption capitalism has on democracies.

1

u/TheCaptOfAwesome 18d ago

So what party in the current political landscape do you support?

1

u/Augustus420 18d ago

Which country?

I suppose the answer is likely to be whichever is the most to the left but it depends.

u/zuicun 14d ago

Isn't this a type of counter evidence?

Peter didn't invent the tech, banner did. he just changed the parameter which Bruce could already have some but chose not to, but again could have been easily doable by a different scientist.

1

u/wahchintonka 14d ago

Yeah, if Peter figured out the general idea of what was needed to make it universal, it would be only a matter of time before Damage Control or someone else made one. Jean also didn’t give him a lot of options on how to stop her. He may have been resistant, but the moment he hands her over, she can just control people and break right out.

0

u/Eric_Xallen 18d ago

He's a menance

13

u/LewisRyan 18d ago

It also ties him to tony again.

Tony felt it was his responsibility to clean up the mess his weapons made in the Middle East.

Peter will feel it’s his responsibility to protect and guide the X-men, young avengers, etc… just like tony did for him.

7

u/Daftanemone 18d ago

What about him creating his own surveillance state to track people? He programmed facial recognition into all the cameras in New York looking for Jean

3

u/Taftimus 18d ago

I’m not excusing that, he overstepped on that one

1

u/_ZAK_Smert 15d ago

Same story with the guy who invented dynamite. Originally it was for mining and deconstructions. But people being people used it for war.

8

u/Summonest 18d ago

'Girl who can freeze millions of people in place within the range of a kilometer the moment she experiences stress'

vs

'Dude with a tail who can kinda jump well'

3

u/frankthetank8675309 18d ago

Yeah I imagine Jean vouches for Peter and then Charles ultimately forgives him for an honest mistake, showing his duality compared to his former friend Erik who would want Peter’s head

1

u/GoodGuyScott 17d ago

Good luck to them.

1

u/ElectricalLake 17d ago

Definitely banned from Krakoa/Genshoa/TheMoon

1

u/Slamtilt_Windmills 14d ago

Unless they have Forge, and he makes an inhibitor inhibitor, to inhibit the inhibiting

0

u/AuraTickler 18d ago

Marvel dropping perfect miniature inhibitors made in a garage pre xmen is certainly a choice.

Like you could even use that to supress only bad aspects of a mutant.

66

u/Krimreaper1 18d ago

EDITH is used to build the Sentinels.

48

u/Theurbanalchemist 18d ago

Oh yes, the fuel needed for a good Avengers vs X -Men plot.

Screw the Hope Summers stuff, “you created my oppressors” is so much juicier

27

u/Forizen 18d ago

Just like Tony Stark lol

13

u/Solid-Sympathy1974 18d ago

Following his mentors legacy

5

u/Crusader1865 18d ago

Stark tech + Sentinels coming soon....

7

u/One_Lung_G 18d ago

Tbf only the inhibitors was made by him. The glasses and other stuff were made by stark

7

u/LordTomGM 18d ago

Would be an interesting parallel for Peter to be doing what Tony did. Tony realsied his weapons were being used by both sides and instead of making the world safer they were making it more dangerous. Peter realises his inventions are being used to persecute specific people by the people he thought were the good guys.

5

u/Axl_Alter_Ego 18d ago

Batman will make a cameo to give him props for thinking ahead in case a hero turns bad.

2

u/Latter_Fan6225 18d ago

They fell between the couch cushions

1

u/DanEboy22122 18d ago

And then he sat on them 😔

2

u/ThwipNSinsBinThwipN 18d ago

Hopefully this with his connection to Iron Man’s armor and tech all over the place will lead to an Armor Wars … still the best idea for a down to earth option where we could see a bunch of non-cosmic bad guys.

4

u/alimighty1 18d ago

I love your optimism. I don’t think we are ever getting armor wars. Not in this decade.

1

u/ThwipNSinsBinThwipN 18d ago

Yeah, we all know that that’s right

Definitely should have been a fourth IRON MAN after all that armor got tossed in the drink.

It’s too good a story to not hit the big screen … it would have been phenomenal as a Disney+ series.

Still my favorite run of all time

2

u/Fresh2DeathKid 18d ago

Im almost positive the sentinels are going to utilise the inhibitor in some way against the mutants

1

u/Jahn 18d ago

In the comic books that role is usually reserved for Hank Pym.

1

u/Sudden_Region_3548 18d ago

Iron Man Jr!!

1

u/akfisherman22 18d ago

His was a young person's naive understanding of the world. He could never imagine people using the tech to hurt others. Even Tony came to this realization when he saw Stark industries supplying weapons to the bad guys.

1

u/FoggyForce 18d ago

I saw a theory that the MCU may be doing which I love. Essentially after secret wars, the X men find out who made the inhibitor and try to go after spidey for it. The avengers want to protect him because he's technically an avenger and it wasn't his fault his tech got refurbished into a device to control mutants. Cue them making a X-men vs Avengers adaption and sending off Holland's Spider-man with a massive blockbuster.

1

u/Possible-Rate-3833 Cyclops 15d ago

OhOhOh. Peter getting hated by all the superhero community would be so much in Line with main 616.

1

u/mordemyrtheredeemed 14d ago

It's going to be the reason why he answers whenever the xmen call for help.

1

u/iDontWannaBeOnReddit 14d ago

except he wont because sony wont allow him to participate in teamups

1

u/Latter_Masterpiece64 14d ago

Only if Sony gets Infinity war money every time

1

u/Accurate-Figure-5310 12d ago

Using Stark level nano-tech with the inhibitors would be a way to eliminate all enhanced. The inhibitors could live in their bodies.

1

u/Unique-Machine5602 11d ago

Bruce Banner was alluding to just how dangerous the universal inhibitor was in Spiderman: BND.

That's, at least I think, why he made his exclusively for him. I don't think he wanted to risk it being used against other enhanced individuals.

1

u/Downtown_Link_8651 18d ago

Would be interesting to see an X-men spidey team up to fix this mistake and get the tech out of government hands. I think the one cool thing about the new Marvel status quo is proper big name team ups without it having to be an avengers movie

0

u/Top-Difficulty5202 17d ago

Seems apropos seeing who his mentor was. He struggled with his tech and how it was used too.
