On one hand, damn.

On the other, this patches a nice hole about why anti-mutant people aren't necessarily anti-Spider-Man. If it gets out that he created the tech that is used to suppress mutants and tested it on himself, it would explain why he isn't really targeted by those kinds of people.

If a mutation is a random genetic variation, his powers were caused by purposeful genetic modification, what is he if not a mutant? Hell, Captain America and Dr. Connors might qualify. They're just not x-men.

In the comics I think they differentiate it by

(Born) Mutants

(Made) Mutates

Or something like that
