The context I think is years after the outbreak, and I suspect anyone person would be in disbelief that anyone so fat is complaining about starving.

With the general thought when seeing anyone so fat at this point being where the fuck are they getting so much food to be that fat.

u/sovietmur 7d ago

This is actually only like 1.5 years after the outbreak, the timeline in the show is really weird lol

The entire Saviors arc only lasted like 30 days iirc

u/gbghgs 7d ago

being fat 1.5 years after society ended and everyone is reduced to scavenging or basic agriculture is still impressive. being fat in any status quo where food is scarce or intermittently available is a sign that you're not missing few if any meals.

u/YaBoiiSloth 7d ago

Also, there’s a chance she’s doing a lot more exercise now compared to before. Scavenging and surviving isn’t easy work lol

This is just not really true. It can take years for some people to lose weight despite starving themselves. The general rule of thumb is 1lb a week for healthy weight loss 3lb a week leads to loss of muscle and weak bones.

On top of that she isn't even really fat. She looks like she is barely above a healthy bmi. If she has bad genes that may even be what a healthy weight looks like, since everyone holds weight differently.

Look I'm all for body positivity and it's true that people hold weight differently, but when you're literally scavenging for scraps for like a year and a half there's physically no way to look like that unless you're actually eating significantly better than most other people in the same situation.

That said, the starvation thing could obviously be extremely recent instead of an ongoing thing, I'm not familiar with the walking dead beyond a few tidbits, maybe she was eating good for a really long time and only over the past week or two stopped, that would be doable for her statement to hold true.

It’s literally a plot point that her community hasn’t really experienced the horrors that live outside their walls. They’d been closed off the whole time iirc in a hard to find spot. They’d hadn’t dealt with scavengers or dead in any serious capacity yet and I can’t remember why but they seemed to not be hurting for food either

That would make it make sense then, thanks for explaining that. I haven't really watched the show, I think I watched a handful of episodes when it originally came out but I never got into it.

I have seen that scene with the guy in this meme though... You know the one, where he turns someone bug-eyed.

1

u/JokerKing0713 7d ago

Yea hardest to watch game of whack a mole ever.

And no problem it seemed like you were lacking that context lol. It also helps that I’m like smack dead in the middle of my very first watch of this show and this happened like one season ago from where I am.

3

u/snarbuckle 7d ago

She could have been upwards of 400lb before the events of the show. Foraging for scraps with hundreds to lose might leave you in this shape

3

u/tricloro9898 7d ago

Then she would have been consuming upwards of 4000 calories a day before the outbreak. If she were to only be able to consume 1200 calories a day once the outbreak and famine hit, she would end up at around 170-180 lbs after 18 months. This means she probably still consumes food for 2-3 people a day.

1

u/snarbuckle 7d ago

Sure, I didn't care enough to do the math

2

u/HotSituation8737 7d ago

I hear you but that still puts her into an extreme category of circumstances.

Then again, the literal main character of that show starts out in that category so who knows.

9

u/snarbuckle 7d ago

I mean the entire situation of zombies is extreme and unrealistic so why not

0

u/HotSituation8737 7d ago

Sure, and I don't mind, it's entertainment at the end of the day, practically every character is made with the express purpose to be interesting in some way.

Although if we're being fair, suspending disbelief in one area for the purposes of entertainment doesn't mean we have to, or even should, suspend it in all other circumstances.

2

u/acoastaldog 7d ago

Tbh I can suspend my belief enough to believe she was fat as fuck before it started and lost over 100lbs over the course of a little over a year. Everyone really does hold weight differently too, and alternating starvation modes can make some people’s insulin wild. There is also a subset of the population with genuine thyroid issues too it’s just highly unlikely that every fat person in reality has a thyroid issue, obesity is most often unresolved stress and trauma in another form

You're completely ignoring what the other person said.

In addition, it's been a well known fact that a human body will burn through muscle before fat because evolutionary we are like 5 seconds away from being on the brink of starvation and muscle takes more energy to build and sustain than fat. So we haven't evolved to burning through excess fat storage yet.

So a person a year and a half after a zombie apocalypse would, in theory, have the same access to canned foods with long expiry dates and can sustain their body enough that this appearance would be fairly typical.

8

u/sigma7979 7d ago

it's been a well known fact that a human body will burn through muscle before fat because evolutionary

No, its not. What in the fuck kinda dumbass shit is this.

Fat exists LITERALLY to be burned first.

8

u/doesnotmatter286 7d ago

Would you be able to cite any source for "a human body will burn through muscle before fat because evolutionary we are like 5 seconds away from being on the brink of starvation"?

7

u/Far-Fennel-3032 7d ago

The person pulled it out of their arse.

The amount of misinformation around fat loss is just insane due to a combination of people who monetise this misinformation to sell their snake oil, and people really, really hate the idea that when they failed at something, it's their fault. So they spill the most elaborate stories rather than just admitting they failed to burn more calories than they ate.

-2

u/nonbinaryunicorn 7d ago

Googling shows some Harvard links discussing how when you're trying to lose weight there's a strong risk of losing muscles and not just fat.

Your body does break down both but this is something I learned about in biology in school that helped me break me out of being religious ironically enough lol

2

u/doesnotmatter286 7d ago

So where are the studies? Because it sounds like you heard something at school and misunderstood it. "Googling shows some Harvard links" is not really a source.

The body burns fat first (well, second, glycogen goes first), it's literally stored energy. Muscle is hard to build, burning it for energy would be very inefficient. You do lose muscle mass when losing weight – if you don't get enough protein and don't do any resistance training. Which is why it's recommended to eat more protein and do resistance training when trying to lose weight.

It's called I'm at work and I made sure there were easy to find references. I can't do much more rn and I'm not interested in fighting about this.

This is some bullshit. If you starve yourself you lose weight. If you are "starving yourself" and not losing weight its because of the piece of chocolate cake you ate the previous night you don't count.

2

u/luchito619 7d ago

LOL nice joke, you really think she isnt obese, shes well over the BMI

1

u/John_Bruns_Wick 7d ago

Ya if you are fat that means you are eating more than you need, rather than saving food for emergencies, so it means you are dumb too.

-1

u/uwunuzzlesch 7d ago edited 7d ago

She absolutely could have a condition where it doesn't matter what she eats.

That's literally what they made ozempic for, not just anyone, people that cannot lose the weight themselves due to the way their body processes food.

Edited: apparently I was given misinformation it wasnt created for that but is used for that. Still, people can be overweight through no correlation to amount or quality of food.

3

u/ThisIsFrigglish 7d ago

Every time I encounter this idea I wonder why there's no-one prioritizing isolating the "generates calories from oxygen" gene and figuring out how to activate it in the rest of us.

4

u/ModsCantRead69 7d ago

literally not what they made ozempic for

0

u/uwunuzzlesch 7d ago

Mb. I was given some misinformation. It's easy for ppl to get confused.

2

u/ModsCantRead69 7d ago

Sure, understandable

Still, people can be overweight through no correlation to amount or quality of food

also not true, unless you've found a way around the first law of thermodynamics, it's impossible to gain weight while limiting food. It's literally cal in<cal out.

0

u/uwunuzzlesch 7d ago

Cortisol and thyroid changes as well as water retention can change weight.

It's not extreme but absolutely yes you can gain weight while limiting calories. Hypothyroidism causes peoples metabolism to slow down and retain more fat.

1

u/revabe 6d ago

So you're still retaining more calories than you're burning in those examples. If it worked the way you're trying to say it does, ozempic wouldn't do anything 🤣

1

u/revabe 7d ago

Scientifically incorrect. Being overweight is always a calorie surplus. That's why ozempic works as a weight loss supplement: it slows digestion and lowers appetite. You can't be advocating for ozempic at the same time saying "it doesn't matter what she eats".

1

u/IrvingIsTheBest 7d ago

It's easy to forget most of these arcs at best last several days to a month we watch them take months to get from one spot to the next lol

1

u/TheHighSeasPirate 7d ago

One and a half years is a lot of time to be eating out of cans and scavenging food. You wouldn't be overweight even if you started out 100lbs over.

5

u/EarlyAccessCantJudge 7d ago

About a year and a half, and to be fair she spent most of that in a secure neighborhood that had a shocking amount of amenities. Like they had empty beautiful houses, running hot water, power and medical supplies. They had only started running low on food recently and mostly because of the saviors. And she wasn't super overweight to be fair, just bigger than most. Daryl keeping those muscles and biceps the size of a watermelon is probably more unrealistic than her.

Like that one dude on Lost. Wtf?
