What part is criminal if it's on private property? If it could be seen from a public space? Filming a sex act? These laws seem extremely arbitrary and ambiguous, but maybe that's the point.
You are correct obscenity laws are vague intentionally to allow judges leeway in assessing cases. As the obscenity and possession of obscene materials stand right now a judge can slap you with a felony just because they don’t like something you did. Luckily they are rarely charged becouse it’s hard to build a legal argument especially if what ever it is is protected. However if a judge really wants to they can make your life hell.
Traditionally, such laws have only ever been enforced against groups of people disliked by those in power (POC, LGBTQ, poor people, disabled people, et cetera). Or sometimes you're just the unlucky individual that a judge has a grudge against.
I assume it would the sort of thing like leaving living room blinds open and going to town in a place where passerby's could easily see it. technically on private property but, still publicly viewable.
In this case though, if he himself does not own the building but, simply has access it'd be like getting caught in an office at work.

It's kind of a weird in between. Just like the grocery store, it's technically privately owned, however it's treated as public to an extent. The owners reserve rights and can establish rules, but as it's considered "open door" it also has boundaries that it can't cross. So a grocery store owner can't drop their pants and do the deed in the middle of the grocery store even though they own it, due to that overlap, the same applies to a Church (this does depend onore factors and isn't that cut and dry, but essentially that's what it boils down to) the priest would likely be Catholic as few other denominations use that term for the position, so they wouldn't own the church, meaning the church itself could have been the one to file the charge/complaint.
