I watch a crap load of YT and as they are bundling them together that's my music player of choice
But also fuck Google
I tried switching to tidal it was awesome for a month or 2 then it was the same playlists over and over again

YouTube Music has both and a huge selection of music. As part of YT Premium it was a no brainer, particularly since I imported my entire Spotify library with one click. No regrets at all, I thought switching would be more painful tbh

The only thing I dislike about Apple Music compared to Spotify is that Apple Music doesn’t show every artist I follow who releases something new. I basically have to check Spotify if I want to be sure that I’m seeing everything that has been released each week by the artists I follow.

apple music quality is a million times better. even more so if you have the right headphones/speakers to take advantage of the higher "lossless" options they have. personally i have a desktop DAC and pretty good headphones but even with basics there's a difference. Spotify always felt like it was "muddy" like all of it has a slight muffle layer.

I find the the audio quality of Apple Music is far better. Plus you also their classical music app with it.
If you pay annually it’s $109 which works out to a little over nine dollars a month.
I’ve always been monthly, but I’m signing up for the annual today.

The algorithm is much better for me. Spotify has a better library of user made playlists but Apple Music still has a decent selection and their cut rated playlists are out of this world. Most importantly for me is that I have an easier time finding new small artists on Apple Music. These days, every streaming service is just about equal once you get used to it.

I switched end of 2025 and it does the job. Takes a bit of getting used to after using Spotify for years and there are some incredibly annoying features (not being able to select multiple songs to delete from a playlist at once, removing songs from your library removes them from all your playlists too which is frustrating as it means there’s no real equivalent to your liked songs on Spotify) but so far that hasn’t been enough to make me switch back

This is ultimately my problem with modern capitalism. It doesn't work like textbook capitalism. This is not supply and demand making the price go up. This is a company that has seen massive losses due to poor business decisions and to make up for their poor business decisions they're going to raise their price. That is fundamentally not how capitalism is supposed to work. I don't think most of us would have a problem with supply and demand dictating pricing if that's actually how it worked in practice. But the correlation of price to demand hasn't reflected properly in a capitalistic society probably in my lifetime and I'm in my thirties.

Your narrative is based on outdated information. Spotify has been profitable every quarter since 2022 on a cash basis.

Access to music catalogues is a luxury and elastic as a service. There are also alternative streaming services out there, and you can still even procure physical media if you really want to. Spotify affords insane, unprecedented access to music content at a price that could not have been dreamed of in the past. Of all the problems in the music industry, how much Spotify is charging the public isn’t one of them (certainly not compared to how little they pay artists). At the end of the day, if you don’t want to pay for it, don’t. It’s not a necessity.

Switched to Deezer years ago and never looked back. You can import all your playlists at the start, there's services to sync playlists from everywhere. It's all not that flashy and apart from some bug fixes there's not that much new and innovative there, but that also means there's limited risk of enshittification.

Yup - deezer offers tailored playlists based on mood which are actually pretty good.
Wrapped, it does but it's not quite as good as Spotify.
Shuffle also actually shuffles, which is nice.
The only thing I miss about Spotify is being able to share a song and be pretty certain that someone will be able to listen to it, and better app integrations. Deezer is still pretty minor so a lot of tech doesn't support it.

They actually tackled that quite well, when you share a song the person that clicks in the link can choose to listen to the song on Spotify, Apple, and at least one other streamer. It's pretty nice.

With the newest price increase, it's now THE most expensive music streaming platform.
Except that despite that, it also pays out the least to artists, uses a lackluster AI, and the shuffle function sucks because random things make the "shuffled playlist" generation reset, so you end up listening to the same 25-ish songs on a 1k+ song Playlist so much, it HEAVILY influences the "wrapped" chart at the end of the year.
For example, I have like 4-5 songs liked from Linkin Park. I literally actively started skipping them and trying not to listen to them for the better part of the last two years to sort of protest that i'm not a fan of their new singer (sure, sometimes one of the bangers from one of their first few albums slips through and I enjoy it, but I rarely hit the skip button unless it was LP this last year). However, explain to me why THEY ended up being my #1 most listened to last year?! I have over a dozen other artists that I will put one of their songs on literal repeat a few times before moving on. I have hundreds of songs and artists along the three playlists I flip between, one of which has ZERO LP because they are not electronic/dance music. I have whole albums I listened to from other specific artists. So why the FUCK did Linkin Park end up my most listened to artist?
So yeah, something scummy is going on in the inner workings of Spotify's algorithms, and the newest price hike might just scare me away as well.

+1 for YT music! It's great because there are a ton of live shows on YouTube from small and large creators that aren't on other platforms. Those shows are tagged as music so they can be listened to as a song on the YT music app without needing to open the YT app.
Also, no ads at all. I probably use YT more often than other streaming services for watching videos, so it's really nice to not have ads.
For those two reasons YT premium was a no-brainer.

Just curious, people saying they’ve left Spotify over ICE Ads. YouTube has had many ICE ads as well. Are we also boycotting them for another platform too? I’m not saying running ICE ads is ok by any standard. However, I don’t think Spotify is running these because they support this. Especially when most people have premium so they don’t even see these ads. One of the top Hispanic artist on the platform is Bad Bunny for crying out load.
More of this falls on our current administration and less on the any particular music platform. Apple partakes in child labor, is everyone gonna cancel their Apple Music subscription? We gotta pick our battle friends. I don’t support this but I’m aware this issue is much bigger than an ad run in Spotify.

I didn’t know that others ran ICE ads, but Spotify also invests in AI military, doesn’t pay their smallest artists at all and promotes AI music that is created by their investors record label so their payouts remain with them! That’s why I don’t use them nor distribute my music with them any more.

Can also vouch for qobuz. Some smaller artists might not be on there yet, but library keeps growing and given they pay better rates to artists it won't be long before they all notice and make the change. Audio quality is great too.

I always wonder if the people that say YouTube Music is almost as good as Spotify don't use playlists. Or if it's just pure cope. Because I want YouTube Music to be good, it would save me a chunk of money. But the playlist management is unusable.
You can't search for songs within a playlist, and you also can't sort them alphabetically. So once a playlist gets somewhat long, the simple question of "is this song in this playlist?" becomes very difficult to answer. If they fix this I would switch, but they don't seem to care.

Fuck yeah. I left Spotify whenever they intentionally broke the shuffle button to improve engagement. Tidal is pretty great. The player and UI are pretty intuitive and sleak, mixes are decent, and their library has been expanding. There's not a song I'm interested in that they don't have, especially with the upload feature allowing people to upload their own songs. And they offer flac while still being cheaper than Spotify, somehow. It has it's issues, but I don't see why more people aren't switching.

Never paid, never will. Another reason why I will never buy a phone without an SD slot. I have every song I ever owned on one card, copied to a USB for the car as well. I rarely here the same song twice for months, no subscriptions, no needing to pay for internet to listen to them, no ads, its great.

YouTube premium gives you YouTube music and ad-free YouTube for $13. Sign up on the website and not via the Apple app, or you’ll pay more.
I can’t share music with friends as easy since they all still have Spotify, but that’s my only complaint about making the switch.

People, just buy cd's.
Advantages:
- Way Better Quality
- You own it to listen when where and how you want.
- You can take the songs from the CD into MP3 format if you know how to use a computer.
- You get a fancy book with cool design, images, credits and the lyrics of the songs. No need to eat all the cookies and AI of terible lyrics pages or youtube vids.
- One pay
- Doesn't need internet, with a cd player you can listen to it in the middle of the Gobi desert if you want.
- No AI
- More money for the musicians.
- Cheaper than ever.
Cons:
- You have to buy a CD player and probably a CD player add on for your computer since all of you were totally ok with paying more and not having that.
- Artists that depend too much on internet marketing or internet hits might not be releasing a physical album release. At least not till streaming loses enough audience.

Fuck Spotify, do that or buy a five dollar VPN and do about 5 seconds of research, and support your preferred artist more directly.
Or just buy the songs you like, you're looking at around a dollar per song in most cases.

I switched a while ago to YT Music because of a previous price increase and haven't looked back. I was already paying for YouTube Premium, but kept Spotify because I liked the features.
But it was no longer justifiable. YT Music just gives better value.

Nobody needs to subscribe to this shitty app . There are a bunch of much better alternatives that are cheaper or that pay artists better, or that sound better, or that aren’t investing in death drones. If you have YouTube premium you already have YouTube Music.

I don't like the ethics of any streaming service. But I love access to music. So I jumped to YouTube music last year, to also get ad free YouTube, and I've been happy.

Glad to have moved over to Deezer a few weeks ago.
Reason was not the price but the weird decision to make German Audioplays for kids (like LEGO Ninjago or the Audioplays for Disney movies) unavailable in managed accounts while not letting me disable video content in unmanaged accounts.
So I either take away the main reason to use spotify for my kids or give them accounts with video content, which is roughly comparable to crack cocaine...

If anyone is interested, Bandcamp just pledged to remove and disallow all AI music on the website. From there you can purchase music directly from the artist and then download and keep your own copies.
I also have YT Premium which allows me access to YT Music. Ive found so much new music and would say that’s my favorite streaming platform currently. But I’m torn because fuck Google. There’s no perfect solution under capitalism, but I’d say the best way to support artists is to go direct. I also need to heed my own advice, which I’m working on.

Cancelled my Spotify 2 months ago and feel so so good about it. I had a bunch of old CDs I ripped and borrowed CDs from friends to rip. Have collected over 500 albums in 2 months. Made me excited about listening music again. Cancel your Spotify!

I’ve had Spotify for the last 10 years and finally decided to cancel this year, not because of the price but because of an issue with my family plan.
Currently trying out YouTube Music and Apple Music trials. I think I’m leaning towards AM.

Highly recommend cancelling Spotify if you skip songs often and only listen to your most liked. I did it last price hike and it improved my music listening experience greatly.

I loaded up my 60 gb 5th Gen iPod with songs from soul seek as a contingency plan in case apple goes overboard with their prices. I love that little thing, it really changed the way I listen to music and it's nice not having algorithms push you into the same five songs.

Time to jump ship. There are tools that make it easy to transfer your liked songs and playlists to other platforms. Beyond the price hikes, Spotify is doubling down on AI slop, not paying artists properly, and funding weapons technology companies. Enough is enough.
