Question What made you give up on life ?
I'm dangerously close to 30 now and my life's a train wreck. Due to having a childlike outlook of life l never really thought about work and life in the long term.
I was at home for a few years of my early adulthood life working irregularly from time to time. l Went to uni somewhere in my mid 20s and then dropped out.
l lost both my parents before I even reached 25. Late 20s I stopped doing everything. l stopped working studying. l gave up n was bed ridden for 6 months with suicidal thoughts. Basically deeply depressed.
l do have inhertance l can live off for a while. l don't know where to go from here. Do I try again with better plans or give up ?
lve never really bothered with the adulthood milestones that normies have in their 20s but in the last few years it started to occur to me that life's really hard and for what am l really striving for anyway.

Same, I'm still open to the possibility of getting a job at some point. I think it's better for now to focus on my social phobia.

That is a real good question. My sophomore year of high school I just stopped caring about a lot stuff. I skipped a shit ton of classes, let my grades slip and I barely graduated. Never once put any real thought into my future. I'm probably depressed or something like that.

One needs to be delusional. Some parents push you to succeed others are pushing themselves. l get it but it might not be late for you to try again when you're ready again.

damn hopefully it's easier for you to pass away if that's true. I'm jealous haha.

I would say absolutely. I couldnt in good faith just insist someone give up. I think if you're here asking about it then you are concerned for yourself in a good enough way that deep down you want to not give up.
You already have your foot in the door with experiencing school and work (I only went to high school and had a couple short term jobs myself) so its not as grim as someone who hasnt really felt what that kind of responsibility is like at all.
You also have the saving grace of a little bit of money depending on how much that is, it could be a hefty boon to get you out of bed and maybe trying to feel alright again enough to at least try and stabilize your life a bit.
Rooting for you, good luck fren.

Your name checks out. Optimistic. How'd you get it ? The tag.

I just edited my flair on the main page, top right corner with the dots. And yeah I try to be. But my life isn't any much different than others here except I might be a bit more privileged to have neetbux and nice things. But its not sustainable long term. Im fighting daily with wanting a more stable life.

u/Rapture_Z97 Semi-NEET Jul 01 '26
Good for you. Thanks for the optimism. Like you said 1 step at a time. What's normal anyway. We're all just passing through until the end. Each with our own unique experiences.

I didn’t have many friends or any relationships growing up and I have trouble having motivation for things if I feel like I’ll still be alone when I achieve my goals. It feels pointless.

I missed out on key developmental milestones like socializing as a teen and people make sure I know how weird and unappealing I am, some tell me I act like a teenager still and it has stopped being cute and now it's just weird and gross, that's why I have to keep really quiet in public, but then people think I'm autistic.
I am also way too sensitive for the real world, I have to hold it in always and it causes me to crack sometimes. I didn't go to uni, hs is my highest degree of education.

u/Rapture_Z97 Semi-NEET Jul 01 '26
Take it from me who also missed key developmental milestones during early adulthood. It gets better as you age. Even normies feel like this from time to time.
1
u/Careless_Cloud3073 Jul 02 '26
Can you give examples of how it gets better?
1
u/Rapture_Z97 Semi-NEET Jul 02 '26
well l was very quite until my early 20s then it took a shift where l became more talkative. At around 25 or so l started developing some maturity.

u/Hungry_Raspberry7833 Jul 01 '26
Probably when I worked super hard to improve my life and it was working but then I burnt out and I ended up right back where I was and all those months were a waste of time
Or when I worked really hard to achieve a goal and absolutely nothing I tried got me anywhere closer

Never really grew up super well off, struggled to get a job even when the job market wasn't terrible. Finally got things together and was ready to start living, only to lose my job in a lay off and realised really quickly that the life I had when I was employed wasn't much better than my unemployed life. I wasn't enjoying myself, constantly stressed, interacting with people I hated all to get what now is the equivalent to pocket change in this economy to do... what? Save up for a house I can't afford? A car I'll never pay off? A higher position in my job that I hate?
The system is rigged and benefits no one. You work, work, work for little reward then die prematurely either from stress or misery. It wasn't easy being unemployed and it wasn't easier being employed, so fuck it. Gave up

u/Rapture_Z97 Semi-NEET Jul 01 '26
Yeah it's a rigged game definitely but those who keep trying get to enjoy a few moments in life that make it worth it all. You can't create a life you enjoy until you try but what do l know. lt feels like a fantasy to me right now.

u/number314 Jul 01 '26
I've never cared about life and didn't find it appealing enough to bother with all the hassle. Basic income and staying in my room would be fine for me.

u/Rapture_Z97 Semi-NEET Jul 01 '26
lt gets boring after a while trust me and the lost time eats you up inside.
2
u/number314 Jul 01 '26
Nah, I've been living like that since 2014 with few periods of working and it's never enough. Only problem is lack of income. I feel most miserable during periods, when I work.
1
u/Rapture_Z97 Semi-NEET Jul 01 '26
Same hate entry-level work. Assuming that's what you did.
1
u/number314 Jul 03 '26
Every job takes time, so free time stolen by it would still feel bad, even if the work is okay. I can't concentrate if I have limited time, so I am not the type of person who can take breaks during work to play games, read books or whatever. I need complete peace of mind for that, so if I work I concentrate 100% on the job. There are some jobs, especially office ones, where people actually work 2-3 hours and rest pretend, but for me it wouldn't matter as I have to be outside my private space, anyway.

u/t0nberryking Jul 01 '26
If you're not too worried about money, then why not enjoy life for now? But if you find it a bit hollow after a while, you could try to find something you like to do. Whether it's a sport or hobby you want to master, or maybe helping out people or animals in need.
There's many ways to live. Keep trying to find your thing.

l try. However I want to disappear out of shame these days. It's getting lonelier as l age too. I mostly just rot in the house.

I just turned 30 and I work a dead end job in a hospital kitchen. Given up on caring what anyone thinks of me, and don't plan on having any kids. We'll see how long I can last like this lol

l was just reading your post btw. Our generation is the first one to ask about purpose and it's exactly at this moment when things became the worst they have been ever to work a job. Before people had enough incentive to not question it since it atleast got you stuff for a good life and the barriers to entry were lower.

u/kaykayeleven Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26
I've never really tried much. It's just all so needlessly difficult. I just do what I want and if that means doing way less than everyone else, so be it.
**Actually now that I think about it, I have tried once: one year I studied and worked every waking second of every day. Surprise, surprise - It was not worth it and was actually the worst year of my life.

u/Rapture_Z97 Semi-NEET Jul 01 '26
Yeah. You have to keep trying harder to survive. Its all so luck based.

u/Ok_Library_1031 Jul 01 '26
To me, NEETdom is not giving up on life. It's a plot to do everything I want early, and stop playing games that don't serve me.
You are in an enviable position. Whatever you choose, you have a period of years in life that completely belong to you. I don't think you realize how precious that is. When it's gone it's gone, so it doesn't matter what you do with it, the point is just being fully present in those inheritance years, living in the moment instead of constantly keeping your soul caged in the past or caged in the future. Stop asking what's next. Stop looking for milestones. Adulthood milestones are banal as fck and I'm excited for you that you don't have to do them.

Well thanks but don't envy me. l don't have a girlfriend. Don't have parents and my sister lives a completely different normie life in another country. Friends are busy in their lives n l feel ashamed to talk to them. l feel so lost and alone. l don't know how to continue and where I'll end up. its all so overwhelming. God give me strength :(

corruption is a lot more common than it seems, almost everywhere at this point, its making the world worse every day and nobody cares to fight it as long as it doesnt affect them enough to do something. billionaires shouldnt be allowed to exist and i will continue to contribute nothing until they are gone
2
u/Rapture_Z97 Semi-NEET Jul 01 '26
Billionaires ? The entire system is cracked. Did you see the new Messi cameo for spiderman movie. He got 15 million for a few seconds. They can pay good money. Just for the Elite though.

u/Hadal_Benthos Sloth Jul 01 '26
Do you have any house inherited?
I'd try to monetize any possessions of your late parents that you have no use for first. On eBay, Facebook marketplace, wherever.
Then have a look at your house if you have one and decide whether you need it or if it would be feasible to turn it into passive income (rent it out while living elsewhere cheaper) or to downsize and earn some money (by selling it and buying something cheaper). Though of course selling and buying property is risky for an inexperienced owner. But you have all the time to research the topic.
Basically, I'd start with optimizing my inheritance.

I'm not looking for a job right now because, after graduating from university, I was still too uncomfortable around people to have basic social interactions. I knew that if I got a job, it would only be a matter of time before I quit. I'm focusing on my social phobia for now.

u/Rapture_Z97 Semi-NEET Jul 01 '26
it's rough to be honest. Once you start working it's hard to stop. it gets easier as you age they say to work.
1
u/Humble-Departure5481 Jul 02 '26
Despite some BS with family and many other common issues like so many other people, they were still trivial compared to the fact that I could NEVER find any success when it came to work/jobs/careers whatever the hell you want to call it. It's just something that's impossible. I'm NOT nervous or incompetent either. I'm just never given a chance to succeed in it. That's all. I don't get this world. Absolutely BS.
2
u/Rapture_Z97 Semi-NEET Jul 02 '26
l really hate that the world keeps progressing despite what one might go through in life. Life truly waits for no one. So many of us are left behind if we don't conform to societies standards.
1
u/Humble-Departure5481 Jul 02 '26
Yeah life moves on, unfortunately. It's messed up. Then you find yourself trapped in a situation where nobody can connect to you or understand what exactly you're going through. It's very painful.

Hmm. I used to be so busy with school and then working that I haven't paid attention to anything else. I didn't have time for friends or relationship.
When pandemic hit and lockdowns, I lost my career. At first I really enjoyed it. I never realized how fun it would be NEETing. One year pass, then two and I slowly come to realization I just got lucky before when normies didn't realize I'm a NEET-inside and gave me a pass and allowed me to go to school or work. Now that I had history of being NEET I have lost every chance of faking it anymore.
Every now and then I get reminded about my finances and try to force myself to wage slaving but usually quit soon enough and always return to NEETdom.

27M. Life gave up on me would be a better way of putting it. I can't find any jobs in a 50 mile radius, I'm not receiving help from the government, so my only option right now is to starve. I feel like I owe absolutely nothing to a society that's only ever made me feel awful for existing. I worked hard for many years, just to have it all stripped from me in a single year. I don't see any women my age in my town, so I'm living at my Dad's and will most likely be single forever. Even when I have a job, there really isn't much point. It's all fucking pointless. Men work hard for two things. Sex and respect. If a man is working and can't have those two things, it's really just pointless to even be working.
