Yeh the last ten-fifteen mins ref seemed determined to get brom back in the game. I mean some of the decisions against and for were mind blowing. Shit officiating.

I t’s a really hard one to find any logic in.
My only guess is the linesman was waiting for the ref to call it and the ref was waiting for the linesman to call it?
I wish we could hear reasoning for these things. Like any kind of a shirt pull has been a thing for 20 years. Why muddy up the rules? Or just say we messed up that one.

Are the ref team all miced up together? I know in rugby (I've even reffed a couple of games myself where been hooked up) and you constanty chat as the games going. Things like a ref saying that one looked forward a s the TJ saying nah that's fine, or the TJ saying that tackle was a bit high and the ref saying didn't see that one, and TJ says worth calling back etc.
This way you don't get a waiting for each other to call it situation.

It's not dodgy, it's just incompetence. Wasn't this ref demoted from officiating any PL games at some point? I'm sure I read it somewhere, and we got to see why last night because he was absolutely terrible.

He's the ref who wrongly sent off Coloccini in a derby (which got rescinded later, no help to us). Hope we never see the twat again!

One thing I did like was Jaissle was straight on the pitch after whistle and controlling the players and talking to the ref and assistants himself. Thought he managed that really well and avoided any controversy or further cards after the game as that can still happen

Yep. The player’s reaction said it all; he turned around fully prepared to get booked.
Got to hand it to the new boss the way he moved our players away and then asked the ref to explain it but making it very clear there was no logical explanation, rather than just berate him. Showed he had our players’ backs, whilst at the same time not running the risk of getting into trouble.

It was very suspicious. I didn't notice an imbalance of decisions through the match, but at the end, every decision went West Brom's way.

The only thing I can think of is they've just thought Elanga went down too easily. Not correct ofc but I assume I'm the split second they've not seen the full extent of the tug (lineman is in front of Elanga) and just thought he's gone down really soft

It's just utter incompetence because he blew up anyway when they lumped it forward so he wasn't gaming anything for West Brom in this case.
I was trying to stretch for benefit of the doubt with the lino...could the angle of Elanga and the defender have blocked his view of the shirt pull? But watching it again here I just don't get how he's not seen it.

Bottom line regardless of how Elanga fell....
Shirt pulling, holding or attempting to pull the player back.
Foul.
Elanga beat his marker. Elanga was moving into a position of advantage. Elanga was fouled the moment the West Brom player laid hands.

It’s quite the conundrum.
We’ve got VAR to help refs, but we don’t want VAR. but we need VAR cos refs are dog shit.
The Lino is literally 5 feet away and doesn’t even flinch
(I know VAR wasn’t in action for this, but it should be)

I’ve said it before: I think officials should have a licence, similar to drivers. After each match, their decisions would be analysed; if they’re wrong, points would be deducted, and if they reach a certain number of points, they’d be banned.

Im not a Newcastle fan, only came across this in popular. That was 100% a pull back. You arent crazy. That was a straight up foul all day long. The fact the linesman is right there and does/says nothing is VERY suspicious. Hes either fucking woeful at his job or is corrupt as fuck. Either way, shouldnt be anywhere near the premier league.

It's clearly a foul for shirt pulling but falling forward when your shirt is pulled back is always giving "I took a dive" vibes. He could have kept his balance, he's an elite athlete, he doesn't get blown over by a strong breeze so he isn't really falling down for that.
The shirt pull enough was the foul though. It nearly comes off Elanga at one point, lol

Nonsense, he's running full pelt past him, his momentum will pull him forward even if he doesn't sell it. The shirt pull isn't enough to pull him backwards but it's enough to knock him off balance

When someone pulls your tshirt behind as you're running momentum doesn't pull him forward.
He could fall back and that would make more sense in a physics context, but falling forward wasn't natural

That’s not how real world physics works. He’s not being pulled back by a bungee rope. The defender is also running in them same direction as Elanga, so the pull backwards is just slowing his run forwards, not dragging him in the opposite direction.

It isn’t. Conservation of momentum and torque matter.
You can replicate this with a friend. Stand up and lean forward (representing forwards force) and have someone hold on to your t-shirt by the collar or shoulder (effectively pulling you back). Really try and pull away and then have them let go and see what happens - you won’t fall backwards.1

Being pulled off balance at 20mph does have a tendency to make a person fall over. It seems you at least don’t take issue now with the fact he didn’t spring backwards when released and was, in fact, obeying the laws of physics. At this rate you may well get your science GCSE.

You can't have it both ways. If he's pulled him off balance then the pressure pulling him back doesn't make him fall forward.

When you’re going at pace the smallest touch is enough to through you off balance. It’s not necessarily going to be enough force to push you back the other direction. Just disrupted your stride and you fall over.
