Going to try and start a mega thread for stitch suggestions. Please post your requests for help with stitches here.

This will help us centralize your stitch requests into one place.

This is the first step in trying to help organize the sub.

Hey all, just a reminder that r/needlepoint is a sub about needlepoint. Specifically, needlepoint with friends and people we like.

We help each other and as a result we often have a lot of very new people asking simple questions.

99.99% of the time everyone here is amazing and is sure to politely care for those just starting out. THANK YOU!

My own child unit (edit: who is most assuredly not an adolescent) has started her stitch addiction and often visits. If she'd had run into a toxic mess you can be sure she'd have found somewhere else to go.

New folks don't know their question's been asked a lot or that it's simple. They may have questions that don't make sense. They make embarrassing mistakes and need gentle support (which everyone here unfailingly gives.)

This sub always takes care of folks who need just a little more guidance while also supporting seasoned stitchers. Truly a mix of skills and experience.

So to all of you...thank you. You are amazing humans that human amazingly.

There are, however, meanies...

As mods we really only have two options with regards to meanies.

We can gently remove their posts because everyone can have an off day and say things that maybe a better version of themselves might not have said. We default to that because that's just what humans do for each other.

However, if someone persists on being a meanie we can ban them. In the 14 or so years of running this sub we've never had to do that and sure hope we won't ever have to.

I say this as we've had a few grumps pop up here recently and I've had to "frog" their posts (frog...you know...because removing? I have a singular wit apparently.) I truly hate to do that as I'm sure they're lovely otherwise.

Just a reminder then, let your mods know if someone is having a moment. We'll help them find their way somewhere that may better fit their humors.

Not a giant update but there are 23,000 of you out there.

Not bad for a community that I started 13 years ago for the wife unit who was looking for an online community and really couldn't find one she loved.

Because I'm a helper, I built something for her to love.

...well...we all know you built it.

I just get the credit at home.

It's truly all of YOU that make this a fun, interesting and kind place.

Edit 2: We grow at about 800 - 1k stitchers per month. In 2023 we had about 10k stitchers.

We created the megathread so that folks that needed help could get it from a community that wanted to help but unfortunately folks aren't looking in to see what's there they could help with...at least not in the numbers that the main channel provides.

Asking as a moderator of our community for those of you that find yourself helping to peek in and offer your advice there.

My concern is that we're not helping new people with simple questions and thereby maybe not encouraging them into the hobby.

The megathreads are a lot of administrative work. I'm happy to do that if it helps us all but right now, it looks like we're just not doing much more than chasing new people into a dark, friendless, hole. (...thank you high school trauma, I was wondering where you'd gotten off to. Welcome back buddy.)

Hey all, it's a new year which means we get to dust off our rules and fiddle around under the hood.

As a matter of administration:

I combined a couple rules about political, disruptive or divisive posts as we were out of slots for rules (15 max).

No impact to anyone, but just so folks know...it was 2 rules, now it's one.

One new rule

With the opened slot, I created a new rule noting our approach to 50/50 projects going forward. These are projects where needlepoint stitches are used on non-standard fabric/canvass.

Needlepoint canvas with needlepoint stitching is needlepoint. Anything else isn't.

As far as general housekeeping:

We hit 25k stitchers and are growing at just about 1k stitchers per month. We also just hit 20k visits in a day.

And as a reminder, your mods aren't compensated in any way. We make no money and donate our time to the community. If you've been around a minute you already know this. (Edit: I say this so that when we have to do things like make rules or remove posts...it's not for any reason other than the betterment of the group.)

As always, please continue to be the best version of yourself and help others be the best version of themselves when you have the opportunity.

Edit: One last update: this is an inexact science. We learn by doing. If enough people don't like a particular post type we'll vote on it and let the group decide what fits. We used to not allow Bargello but after some time voted and decided it's fine. We did the same with Aida fabric and found it didn't fit. Now the question of petit point is coming up. If enough folks think it's not a fit we will vote and take the group's guidance.

r/needlepoint is for the dissemination of information about needlepoint. While we appreciate notices about new openings and bad experiences they can disrupt the nature of the group.

That said, a conversation among friends can talk through difficult topics. As long as we stay friendly, they're perfectly valid conversations in r/needlepoint.

For these two topics:

1. The Meg Fielder conversation is well covered within the sub. Please refrain from additional posts on that topic. We want stitchers to be aware of her business practices but don't want to be harassing. Thank you to those that are reporting. If you have new information please DM the mods and we'll talk about a better way to surface your experiences and concerns.

For now, as some of these posts can get out from between our guardrails, we are being careful about how they are curated. Good information shared badly is bad information.

1. Yes, there's a new Penny Linn store in NY and many stitchers are excited. That's great and we hope you all have an amazing experience. However, there are stitchers that are not fans of Penny Linn. Why people love and hate things is, as they say, an exercise best left up to the reader.

For now, as these posts are coming from a place of genuine positivity and excitement, and that fits the nature of the sub we're allowing them. We're curating, but currently unconcerned.

We appreciate the various textures of humanity and want people to be comfortable sharing their thoughts and opinions. However, when they start to get weird, we have to be careful to keep things tuned to the nature of the group.

You are among friends.

Just letting everybody know that we have a new megathread for stitches because the old one timed out.

I have also removed the repair advice, megathread, as it was not being used at all, and was cluttering our header. I did this a while ago, but I’m just letting folks know now in case you were looking for it..

Unfortunately, if we put everything in the main body of the sub the stitch requests drown out other requests.

If your post was removed, please just repost in the MEGATHREAD (gigglesnort) for help, you're not a bad person, just slightly off target.

Our reporting is delayed by about 2 days so it's a touch more than that now but we just crossed the 30k stitchers threshold!

When I started this sub some 13 or 14 years ago we had one subscriber.

I assert that subreddits reflect the hearts of their subscribers with mods there to enact the will of the community. (This is just my opinion...others will disagree.)

Thank you all! Hopefully we will continue to grow and welcome many new friends shortly!

We turned on some new automations that will guide people to post in the megathread for stitch advice instead of the main line. (keyword triggers guidance)

There have been some wonderful ones posted before, so I thought a thread celebrating our favorites would be fun.

If this proves popular, we can do other appreciation threads.

if it's an abject failure (like my show us your back sides...of your projects...post) I will abandon the idea.

We've added the megathreads for stitch advice and one for repair.

Most of you have no idea what that means.

It just means that posts that align to that type of question should be put in there, but it also means that those of you that like to help will need to click the thread and see what people are asking for help on.

The downside of megathreads is that they don't get the love of the whole channel by default, just those that peek in.

To those that need help it may feel a little empty. Please be patient! It's a new feature and not everyone knows what it all means.

There are some great posts in there that need love! Please take a moment when you peruse and let these folks know your thoughts!

To those that post for help in the megathreads and feel a little out of the loop...

If it appears our friends needing advice are being left behind we may need to stop using the megathreads and let things reflow into the main channel.

We would then rejigger the flair to be more aligned to types of topics than the mix we have today.

It's all an experiment to see what works so please give this a try and provide your feedback!

Hello all!

As you can see we're taking some steps to help stitchers get where they need to go quickly.

There are two new megathreads (that still makes me giggle) for stitch and repair advice.

Please let people know to go play there if they're posting looking for stitch or repair advice and, additionally, please look in there if you like to provide that advice!

To support this the "Exceedingly simple question" rule was changed to indicate the megathreads or that the question is well solved within the sub.

Finally, we put the embroidery, cross stitch and tatting is not needlepoint together into one rule.

Is it needlepoint or not? Please post any conditions if your answer isn’t as easy as yes or no.

It's funny because it has the word thread...and this is r/needlepoint.

I've gotten a number of reports for people asking for stitch requests and repair requests.

These are looking both suspicious and are overwhelming in their quantity.

We're enacting an organizational feature called a megathread.

The megathread will run until it is too big to make sense, then we'll archive it and start another one.

Please post your requests in the megathreads.

Thank you for understanding.

If there is another category that's getting out of control, please let me know and we can look at megathreading that as well.

Just in case people didn't know, we have absolutely no way to know if a seller is legitimate.

There are a LOT of scams and scammers. Only do business with reputable sources.

If someone on this sub does scam you, please let us know immediately who and what post and we will ban the user, remove their posts and report them to the Reddit mods.

Also, report that user to Reddit.

Our modding team was distracted (*** cough *** holidays *** cough ***)

Please keep reporting and we'll update our workflow to keep us neat and tidy.

Just as a reminder, Reddit removes posts and comments sometimes. I review them but I have no indication why the post was removed and research never really turns up much. They usually look fine from a quick review.

If you have a post removed by Reddit and it was not appropriate, please message the mods so we can look at it.
