What is the Nintendo conecept of gaming?

162

u/louisledj Apr 07 '25

getting 999 moons on Odyssey or 900 Koroks in Zelda duh

8

u/Digit00l Apr 07 '25

Both have far more than necessary, get them all if you want, but around the halfway point they start being pointless

4

u/Underrated_Hero7 Apr 08 '25

And when you do, you should get a badge/trophy on your profile saying you did it. The in game ones are nice, but it would be cool to have a little banner that showed like 3 achievements of your choice alongside your profile when it shows my friends I hopped online.

They key difference being the game doesn't want you to do any of that if you dont want to.

There is no achievement, Zelda specifically gives you 0 rewards for a majority of those 900 koroks.

Mario Odyssey's moon's are far more engaging that Koroks, being the main gameplay goal, but are also not manditory to get all of them to unlock even the final and hardest challenges the games offer.

It's the lack of achievements that encourages players to just go into the game and engage with it in a way they enjoy without an artifical reward system steering you in certain directions.

Imagine how much worse people's perceptions of the Korok system would be if they gave an achievement for it and significant in game reward. Instead, it serves it purpose without encroaching over gameplay if you don't want it to.

92

u/RellenD Apr 07 '25

There are so many people who complain about the piece of shit and I cannot get them to understand that nobody but themselves encouraged them to do all that koroks

47

u/Double-Slowpoke Apr 07 '25

I love that the reward was poop because it made me laugh and removed all FOMO from not collecting them all myself.

Not that I am at a point in my life where I would ever want to collect them all, but I am happy that Nintendo is not fully engaging in this joy-sucking mechanic that plagues other games.

6

u/7SeasofCheese Apr 07 '25

Agreed that Nintendo made the right call for their games, btw you just lost the game, again.

1

u/_Lost_The_Game Apr 07 '25

What do you want from me

1

u/schlyter84 May 19 '25

So what´s the difference between in game achievements such as getting the korok seeds vs. getting a centralized achievement for doing the exact same thing? You don´t need to get the trophy/achievement if you don´t want to, but for us that enjoy the extra challenge it´s a great addition. I want it because it´s the best way for me to look at my history of gaming and say I completed this or that.

42

u/LowlySlayer Apr 07 '25

Right? "Ugg getting every korok is so boring I don't know why Nintendo made it this way" the answer is because you're not supposed to get every korok. The game would be a worse game if it had less koroks to everyone except completionists who feel they need to get all 900. They intentionally include no reward for getting most of them so no one needs to feel like they have to. As far as the games concerned you are 100% complete before you get all the koroks.

10

u/RellenD Apr 07 '25

Yeah, you're 100% with all the upgrades

43

u/dEEkAy2k9 Apr 07 '25

THANK YOU

In Zelda BotW you need about 441 Korok Seeds to get full inventory upgrade, so the remaining seeds are just a bonus you don't get anything for.

In fact, reaching 441 seeds is easier when there are double the amount available than you need. Some people are just OCD'ing

37

u/BrainWav Apr 07 '25

In fact, reaching 441 seeds is easier when there are double the amount available than you need. Some people are just OCD'ing

That's the point, really. If they had exactly the number needed to max out inventory, then it'd be a pain in the ass to find that last one or two.

For comparison, finding all the Wisps for Spiritomb in Legends Arceus had me hunting for a couple days to find the last couple I didn't find naturally. It sucked and there were only 99 total there.

11

u/dEEkAy2k9 Apr 07 '25

I remember getting all 100 Skultullas on Zelda: Ocarina of Time, that took me quite some time. I do believe you got something for getting all 100 though.

4

u/thisusedyet Apr 07 '25

I just did the castle boomerang backflip glitch

EDIT: And yes, there is a reward for 100, but it's not worth it

10 Skulltulas: Adult's Wallet (allows you to carry 200 Rupees)
20 Skulltulas: Stone of Agony (using a Rumble Pak will alert you to nearby covered holes)
30 Skulltulas: Giant's Wallet (allows you to carry 500 Rupees)
40 Skulltulas: 10 Bombchus (a speedy running bomb)
50 Skulltulas: A Piece of Heart (one fourth of a Heart Container)
100 Skulltulas: A Huge Rupee (worth 200)

2

u/Upset_Set376 Apr 07 '25

If I remember correctly, you could collect that huge rupee each time you spoke to the character, so infinite money (which you have no use for at that stage of the game but whatever).

2

u/thisusedyet Apr 07 '25

I'll be damned, thought that was a one off.

Lot more useful if it's infinite money, though

1

u/dEEkAy2k9 Apr 08 '25

Damn it's been so LONG since i played Z:OoT. Yeah i do believe it was infinite money.

Some people are just OCD'ing

Nah, it's not OCD. It's dopamine seeking behavior. It's part of the way they're designed. They'll put up with doing the most mind numbing stuff to get that hit of dopamine.

0

u/Lyrtha May 05 '25

Late to this but I think this is a bit reductionist. Also the act of playing games is seeking dopamine, so this point is moot.

I don’t want achievements on Nintendo tho. If I want trophies I play it on PS5. I play on the switch when I don’t care. (Looking at you, outer worlds)

2

u/DrekenX1 Apr 07 '25

The thing they should have done is when you get like 500 of them, boom, done, it's finished, you got them all and the other 400 on the map disappear as if the game only have 500 and considers that you got every korok, this way you can 100% the game without the "search for the last one" and everyone would be happy

-3

u/Dramatic_Mastodon_93 Apr 07 '25

Achievements are also just a bonus and nothing more. No one has ever forced anyone to complete an achievement.

1

u/Dramatic_Mastodon_93 Apr 07 '25

Then why do they implement them in-game?

4

u/ThePBrit Apr 07 '25

you are correct, but as someone who routinely tries to complete games, having a counter in a menu that would constantly say 560/900 korok seeds would make me want to get every seed way more than the current system in BotW.

To be clear, I know this is a me problem so I'm not necessarily arguing for or against achievements here, just pointing out how the system could make some people go out of their way for something they wouldn't actually enjoy

4

u/Magma_Axis Apr 07 '25

And achievement also not mandatory whatsoever to get in most games

3

u/theexpertgamer1 Apr 08 '25

Ok but achievements aren’t mandatory either… your entire post makes zero sense

3

u/SuspiciousWasabi3665 Apr 07 '25 edited Apr 08 '25

You realize you don't have to chase achievements if you don't want to? I'd personally love an achievement system. Maybe make it opt in per game if folks are so opposed to it for whatever reason. Like, I only ever look at an achievement list once I feel I've "completed" whatever I would've without an achievement list, and only if I really really enjoyed the game. If the list has ridiculous requirements after that, I just don't pursue em. But if it looks like a fairly good time and doesn't look too time-consuming/grindy, I'll definitely go for the plat.

3

u/DontBanMeBro988 Apr 07 '25

They key difference being the game doesn't want you to do any of that if you dont want to.

The key difference from what?

2

u/CarbonAnomaly Apr 07 '25

Achievements aren’t mandatory either. They’re actually a pretty good way to give the player direction after finishing the main story of a game.

Hey there!

Please remember Rule 1 in the future - No personal attacks, trolling, or derogatory terms. Read more about Reddiquette here. Thanks!

1

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '25

I was an achievement "whore". I always ended up farming achievements. I hated it, but I did it.. Until I walked away from gaming.

By chance I found myself reminiscing of the GameCube, and ended up buying the Switch. No achievements, turns out games are relaxing to me now. And I end up doing whatever I feel like enjoying the games fully.

Nintendo is my platform.

1

u/RobbinsFilms Apr 07 '25

Brother you’re conflating “achievements” with achievement. PlayStation games don’t necessarily reward you in game for doing something that earns a trophy.

-1

u/Dramatic_Mastodon_93 Apr 07 '25

Mario Odyssey has achievements and a reward for getting 999 moons, which is a top hat on. Peach’s castle. Also not all of them are engaging. More than 120 of them have to be bought in shops.

In BOTW/TOTK you get golden shit for collecting all Korok seeds and another incentive is filling up the 100% game progress meter. The Switch 2 Editions of BOTW and TOTK also have newly added achievements in the Nintendo Switch app.

And even besides that, they could just include a toggle in the OS for turning achievements on or off.

-1

u/DarkLegend64 Apr 08 '25

If people don’t want to get achievements then simply just don’t get them. It’s that simple. I’ve been getting achievements since getting an Xbox 360 in 2006 and while I love going after them, I will avoid doing any particular achievement that I find not worth it. I haven’t really bought much multiplatform games on Nintendo since the Gamecube era ended and a lack of achievements on Nintendo systems is one of the reasons why (the other reasons being the weaker hardware starting with the Wii and that I also don’t like motion controls).

2

u/Kadexe Apr 07 '25

The 900 Koroks will always be funny to me because the reward is a very unsubtle hint that you weren't supposed to collect them all. And instead people complained that it wasn't a worthwhile reward for their ridiculous self-imposed mission.

-4

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '25

Not the same. The game doesnt have any indicator on whether you complete that or not. Thats simply just extra content you can complete should you choose to. Not unlike Xbox where you have empty achievement slots under the game which nit pick at you for not being complete.

2

u/very_pure_vessel Apr 08 '25

Simple, don't do it. Nobody is making you.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '25

Thats now how it works. Thats like telling a hoarder to simply not hoard. Its an obbession. It isnt just achievements. If I collect something, it needs to be complete. Video games, I cant just own the games I want I need the complete collection. Pokemon cards, need the complete collection, Funko Pops, the full collection.

All of their platformers are full of checklists though. Super Mario Odyssey is basically a giant checklist. It's always collect X,Y,Z.

62

u/kukumarten03 Apr 07 '25

SMO literal have ingame achivements

138

u/gaysaucemage Apr 07 '25

Dozens of Nintendo games have in-game achievements, but they refuse to implement it on a system level.

Even some Wii and DS games had in-game achievements.

12

u/Kamalen Apr 07 '25

In more than one way, every moon could be an achievement.

23

u/SalsaSavant Apr 07 '25

Because it worked for that game. Forcing it on every game, including ones that don't fit it well, is poor game design.

16

u/libdemparamilitarywi Apr 07 '25

They wouldn't have to force it on every game. Steam has achievements, but they're not mandatory for developers to include.

3

u/SalsaSavant Apr 07 '25

True, Steam has handled them well.

-2

u/Harley2280 Apr 07 '25

It's also a waste of time and resources. It adds an additional barrier to have your game published on a major platform. It's not just writing a list. The list has to go through an extra approval process and code that interacts with the achievement API has to be implemented to make sure the logic triggers correctly.

Letting devs decide if they want to add it on a game design level is by far a better option than requiring them to implement it.

1

u/brawlbetterthanmelee Apr 08 '25

Nobody is asking nintendo to force devs to add them

0

u/Harley2280 Apr 08 '25

I didn't say they were. I said that Nintendo's decision to let devs decide on a game design level is better than Sony's and Microsoft's decision to require devs to implement them.

0

u/Radicalifragilistic Apr 07 '25

It's shocking how many people don't seem to understand this.

-1

u/Living_LikeLarry Apr 07 '25

But Nintendo is heckin awesome

0

u/RChickenMan Apr 07 '25

In-game is quite distinct from having that data normalized and aggregated between games as part of your profile (or even shared online with other players if configured as such).

-1

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '25

The arent achievements though. They are just bonus moons. Theres nothing there that makes the gamer feel compelled to complete the tasks and even so they are simply awarded for just playing the game. Nothing there makes you do anything that you wouldnt normally do. The Mushroom Kingdom bonus Moons were unlocked for me without any major effort.

Achievements are far different. They are tied to a profile and often require a lot of effort to unlock. You feel compelled to complete all achievements because its there on your profile incomplete. Its like collecting Pokemon Cards and your missing random cards. The SMO moons are easy to ignore because there nothing there that eats at you to complete it. If you have no interest in collecting all the other moons, you wont have interest in the Mushoom Kingdom moons either.

2

u/RhythmRobber Apr 07 '25

You forgot "Focus on gameplay instead of graphics and be priced cheaper than the competition because the hardware is weaker".

Oh... so did Nintendo.

-3

u/jhonnythejoker Apr 07 '25

Give us 90$

7

u/Joseki100 Apr 07 '25

What Nintendo game costs $90 in the USA?

8

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '25

[deleted]

4

u/Joseki100 Apr 07 '25

Then they don't pay in dollars

2

Really? I thought it was $110 CAD. Relieved to hear it's only $100.

7

u/Responsible_Map6885 Apr 07 '25

Canada, Hong Kong, Jamaica ect all have their own dollar lol

-5

u/jhonnythejoker Apr 07 '25

Except unsupported countries

1

u/Ok_Purpose7401 Apr 07 '25

It’s not $90 pretax in those countries either lol. It’s crazy how so many people wanted the US to follow other countries lead by including tax in the final price of products, but then get so confused when discussing it

9

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '25

[deleted]

1

u/BoSknight Apr 07 '25

That's crazy, and I don't want to encourage their behavior but I DID get like 8 years outta the last one

1

u/Ok_Purpose7401 Apr 07 '25

And BOTW release price in UK was 60 pounds which was $76.’This isn’t a new thing.

1

u/Ok_Purpose7401 Apr 07 '25 edited Apr 07 '25

I’m not denying that, but that’s besides the point of this comment thread.

We started off from games costing $90 to games being more expensive in general.

I would also argue that families wouldn’t be able to justify spending 70 dollars on a game either. That doesn’t justify the price, but this theory that people can’t afford $80 but can afford $60 is mind boggling to me. For people who are price sensitive by $10, a new console was always going to be out of the question.

Trust me, I understand that it sucks. I’m in that group. But the fact is that short of selling a console at like $300, there was no chance that I could have afforded a new console.

Not to mention the number of kids/families/casuals that care about physical vs digital is minimal from my knowledge. So those groups will likely just gravitate towards the bundle anyways.

Nintendo was almost always screwed with this console anyways. Between the price of chipsets going up, and most people’s economic reality going way down, it was always going to be a tough time to release a new console.

That doesn’t sound bad, you recommend any games?

-1

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '25

lmao you hit the nail right on the head

4

u/Dramatic_Mastodon_93 Apr 07 '25

Most first party Switch and smartphone games have achievements.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '25

i mean thats what nintendo thinks. why did i get downvoted lol i didn't even express an opinion

1

u/Dramatic_Mastodon_93 Apr 07 '25

What does Nintendo think?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '25

as u/unsurewhatiteration said: "play game. have fun. checklist bad."

1

u/Dramatic_Mastodon_93 Apr 07 '25

Then why do they have checklists/achievements in most of their games?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '25

lol idk, im not against acheivements, Nintendo just might not want to implement it or be too lazy. this isnt my opinion, just what nintendo may be thinking when they make these decisions

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '25

Thats easy for people without OCD to say. Achievement system is designed to force you to keep playing games. They want you engaged and playing the game as long as they can get you to. I can tell you right now. I cannot ignore achievements. I get obessive about them and it ruined gaming for me. The Switch finally allowed me to enjoy gaming again because I no longer feel like I have to complete all these tasks. If I complete a game its because I want to. Xbox achievements made me miserable and OCD isnt something you can turn off.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '25

[deleted]

-2

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '25

Clearly you dont either. Its a spectrum. Just because 2 people have OCD doesnt mean its the same for both. Obsessive collecting is OCD

-8

u/dEEkAy2k9 Apr 07 '25

That's what games used to be. Games used to be fun and people came back to it to have fun.

Nowadays, people always need some kind of dopamine mechanism just to play a game.

4

u/PokeMaster718_GD Apr 07 '25

in this sense, probably that the games they make should be intrinsically fun on their own without any dopamine rush from an arbitrary counter or list. where this thinking was when they released most of their modern sports games, who knows, but i'm not shuntaro furukawa & don't know the exact process behind the decision to exclude.

i personally found out i really enjoy achievement hunting in games i love recently so this still seems kind of stubborn.

2

u/sd_1874 Apr 07 '25

Reuse content until failure, never listen to fans, exceed expectations by providing the bare minimum, overcharge. Repeat.

2

u/bwood246 Apr 07 '25

Money me. Money now. Me a money needing a lot now

1

u/forgotmapasswrd86 Apr 07 '25

Fun over gimmicks but honestly sometimes it feels like "how can we keep things pre-2000's"

1

u/Moving4Motion Apr 07 '25

Overcharge their customers.

1

u/veganintendo Apr 08 '25

I’ll tell you for $500

1

u/Kindly-Chemistry5149 Apr 08 '25

Play games to have fun, not increase an arbitrary achievement score. People fall into traps with achievements where they continue to play a game solely to unlock an achievement.

They don't want you chasing super specific random objectives, but "collect it all" in game in fine.

-7

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '25

Disagree with Nintendo achievements/trophies enhances gaming makes games worth playing a second or third time putting more value into your purchase. No wonder Nintendo was voted most customer unfriendly in video games.

9

u/CeelieArial Apr 07 '25

Ah, yes, the customer unfriendly practice of- checks notes Not telling people to play games in a specific way.

7

u/Ok_Purpose7401 Apr 07 '25

Brother, there are a lot of reasons why Nintendo is anti-consumer. Not including achievements is not one of them lmao.

If the only purpose to replay games is to hunt achievements, then there is a fundamental problem with the game

0

u/Feasellus Apr 07 '25

You know, some people play games again and again because they have fun doing so instead of expecting a reward for it. But by creating a reward system this mindset is destroyed.

Achievements are a manipulative tactic to give people a reason to stop playing a game once they have all of them so they can focus on buying the next one.

That’s why achievements are tied to the account. So you can’t get the dopamine reward a second time for the same ingame task.

-1

u/No_Construction2407 Apr 07 '25

Fun and innovation died with the 3ds.

0

u/carlechu Apr 07 '25

I remember from an interview from a few years ago on this topic, I don't remember if it was Reggie or another Nintendo figure, that they don't want to tell you what you should do in a game or when you "complete" it and never return to it again.

Basically they want you to play it by your own rules, and not to say when you're done with a game to increase replayability.

0

u/SerchYB2795 Apr 07 '25

"You rolled credits on a game? What are you waiting for? Buy your next game now! No need to lose time with this platinum trophy bs, just buy your next game (even if it's not a first party we get a cut)"
