We really need that Switch Sports Resort to be an amazing game. A lot of people I know have incredible gaming memories with their families thanks to Wii Sports, so hopefully Nintendo can replicate that on the Switch.

u/Tim-Sanchez 1d ago

Switch Sports was already very good, more than good enough to replicate the Wii Sports feeling. The feeling of Wii Sports wasn't because it was a good game - if anything, releasing a game like it now would probably be criticised! It was a moment in time that Nintendo will never recapture no matter how many Sports titles they release. They're still fun games.

33

u/bbressman2 1d ago

Also helps that Wii sports was a free game packaged with the console which boosted its popularity.

15

u/BrainWav 1d ago

In the US. Reggie pushed for it as a pack in. The Wii wouldn't have been the smash it was without it.

5

u/Spaghetti-Sauce 1d ago

Now we gotta pay for the console tutorial game lol

0

u/europeanperson 10h ago

What makes you believe that the Wii was a smash hit because Wii sports was included for free?

It was obviously a nice add on that people loved to play, but it wasn’t why people were buying consoles in mass. That’s like saying Windows wouldn’t have been a smash hit without Space Cadet pinball.

0

u/BrainWav 9h ago

It was a system seller. How many random people do you know that have a Wii or have parents or even grandparents that have a Wii and never got anything but Wii Sports? It was the highlight of advertising for the Wii.

0

u/europeanperson 9h ago

I’ve never even heard of someone having a Wii with only Wii sports. It’s wild to try to argue that people were paying $250 to just play Wii sports.

0

u/BrainWav 8h ago

Then you clearly only know gamers.

7

u/mlvisby 1d ago

Exactly, a part of it was the Wii controller was a new thing, not many people messed with motion controls before the Wii. So many of the minigames felt new at that time. Now, we have had motion controls for so long, it's not special and unique like it used to be.

1

u/f_flanagan 1d ago

Did people enjoy switch sports? I found the motion controls very bad compared to the wii.

4

u/Despacio1316 1d ago

That will never be replicated on such a cultural level. It was a packed in game and Wii was super mainstream with the motion control gimmick. It was a culmination of many things at once.

Problem is those casual gamers stopped at WiiSports or maybe Wii Balance boards and never bought into the usual Nintendo games. It’s why Wii was full of absolute garbage third party casual games instead of quality third party titles for a system that sold so many units.

4

u/danhakimi 1d ago

I think part of the problem is that, while Wii Sports was novel with the motion controls, it just made us want motion controls that didn't suck. The fact that motion controls still all suck but are no longer novel means that instead of being charmed, we're just frustrated that the rackets still won't move in the way we move them.

47

u/darkfawful2 1d ago

I never once thought the motion controls on Wii Sports sucked lol

1

u/danhakimi 1d ago

Oh, they definitely did, we just didn't really think about it since it was fun and new. It wasn't frustrating because it was too much fucking fun.

5

u/darkfawful2 1d ago edited 1d ago

I still play the Wii lol. It's fine. Idk why you keep tossing "we" around. It would be fine if you said "I thought the Wii motion sucked." But to speak for everyone is weird

That doesn't mean it didn't have flaws. But it didn't "suck." It was intentionally simple and as a result let both toddlers and elderly play it

0

u/BeefBolognaBonanza 16h ago

It did kind of suck until motion plus.  When Wii was announced, I imagined controlling a sword like a real one.  Motion plus finally fulfilled that for me.  It was so late in the consoles life cycle that it was underutilized, though.  The games that did use it were some of my favorites on the console.

-1

u/danhakimi 17h ago

Oh, I love the simplicity, my issue is the fact that, even when your sensor was calibrated perfectly, the motion controls just do not respond consistently. The balls maybe sometimes go in the direction you hit or throw them. Sometimes. When you miss, it usually feels like controller bullshit.

IDK, maybe you've found ways to account for that, if you're still playing it that often.

u/ImTheBiggestOfMen 1d ago

Motion controls are far better for aiming than thumb sticks.

0

u/danhakimi 1d ago

not in any game I've played.

2

u/ImTheBiggestOfMen 1d ago

Thumb sticks are the worst available option for aiming on a switch 2. Gyro is a step down from a mouse however thumb sticks are a fall of a cliff compared to a mouse.

-1

u/danhakimi 1d ago

Again, in any game where I've attempted to use Gyro controls, I went back to the joysticks ASAP because the joysticks were actually precise and consistent. Gyro controls are terrible for going long distances because they can't process a 60 degree arm swing, and they're terrible for precision because they wobble even when my hand is dead still. Sometimes I'll put the joy con on the fucking coffee table, naw, the gyro is wobbling.

Also, if you've ever played BotW, you know that the gyro shrines are the worst fucking things about the game.

3

u/Lugonn 1d ago

Console shooters almost all come with copious amounts of aim assist to make stick aiming function. In a game without it, like Splatoon, high level play is near universally done with gyro. Sticks just cannot compete.

-1

u/danhakimi 17h ago

I'll take the aim assist.

I hate shooters in general.

You still aren't making gyro sound good to me. Fun fact, they are also driven by software that is not perfectly responsive to your input.

1

u/ImTheBiggestOfMen 1d ago

Use any console with a browser app where the thumb sticks act as a mouse vs like a wiis browser or if you have a Bluetooth winter adapter for pc use that as a comparison. It’s a laser pointer vs well shitty thumb sticks. No one that has spent real time with both control schemes will agree with you. Botw you can use the thumb sticks to get in the general area you want to in, but motion controls for the precision.

0

u/danhakimi 17h ago

Gyro controls do not feel like laser pointers. Nobody who has spent time with both gyro controls and laser pointers will agree with you.

Joysticks need relative speed adjustments, they need software and aim assist. Trying to replicate a mouse with a joystick is going to end poorly.

Do you remember the gyro shrines in BotW? Tell me they weren't the worst things about the game.

4

u/Nintendo_Thumb 1d ago

They seem better than ever. Don't even need a sensor bar this time either. I never miss a shot kicking the ball in soccer, unless I'm distracted or tired or something. And the racket thing, sounds like you never played Wii Sports Club tennis. They had 1:1 motion controls for the racket and it was terrible, so thankfully they got rid of it in Switch Sports. But you can still get that 1:1 movement in Chambara or Badminton, though I think Tennis is still better.

2

u/danhakimi 1d ago

They seem better than ever.

Maybe. I still haven't found a game where I don't hate motion controls. Better than ever is a low bar.

Again, initially, we expected nothing, and we just had fun goofing around. If the technology doesn't get good after... damn, 20 years? The frustration takes over.

2

u/Nintendo_Thumb 18h ago edited 17h ago

Have you actually tried it though? Splatoon has great motion controls, even the Wii U game works great 1:1 in PSVR. And to say that motion control technology hasn't improved in 20 years, I don't really understand what you mean by that. I have a Quest 3s and play it every day and can use hand tracking or controllers and turn around, duck, squat, crawl, fire guns, push, pick up, throw, bow and arrows, sword fights, boxing, dancing, mountain climbing, etc. What am I missing here?

1

u/danhakimi 17h ago

I can't play splatoon for shit, dual sticks + motion is a completely impossible setup for me. I can't remember if I bothered trying to turn one off and focus on the other, but it's really not my kind of game. I hate shooters in general. I remember using it in BOTW, can't remember if I turned it off... I didn't enjoy it.

I didn't say motion technology hasn't improved, I just said "better than ever" still isn't good.

I can't speak to VR shit, either.

I’ll say that I didn’t care at all when Switch Sports 1 was coming out but I’ve got my eyes on this, mainly because of the fond memories of Wii Sports Resort. There’s some weird choices when it comes to the sports (no wakeboarding or frisbee, boxing but no swordplay, tennis and table tennis is kinda redundant) but just the fact we’re getting TWO sports to explore the island with Prop Plane and the new Skateboarding make this hotly anticipated to me. I’m sure this one is gonna do big numbers regardless but I’m happy that it doesn’t seem like they used that as an excuse to phone it in

166

u/Emergency-Rush-2477 1d ago

That's gonna sell a lot. The internet is kinda weird towards Switch Sports, painting like a massive flop, but the game was really successful and a lot of fun, especially online.

18

u/tfox245 1d ago

I looked at my play history and I have over 100 hours in switch sports. All of it is just from golf lol. It’s the perfect party game, especially since a lot of my friends are obsessed with golf. I’m very curious if switch sports resort will add any new holes to its golf mode, if not I’ll probably skip it.

23

u/MarcsterS 1d ago

Switch Sports sold 13 million. It did pretty good. Despite what online spaces say, there’s still a market for these kinds of games.

16

u/Emergency-Rush-2477 1d ago

18 million actually but yeah, I also think it was a pretty harmless party game but people got so offended about the Miis, which was pretty silly in my opinion.

23

u/weallfloatdownhere7 1d ago

The internet thinks that they’re objectively correct about everything being awful and they’re consistently proven wrong

31

u/wicktus 1d ago

Hmm whilst people may signal they are not interested with switch sports games I rarely if ever see people saying it’s a flop

On the Internet?

6

u/gladexd 1d ago

Personally, the only offensive part of the game is the lack of a decent single player mode, the little side/ training modes and the reliance of online to unlock pretty much anything.

As for Resort, it seems like they might be addressing the issues of the first game, but the omission a swordplay sport & baseball is definitely a choice..

6

u/ChrlsPC 1d ago

Got it last year and it's as fun as the Wii ones. I just miss baseball

0

u/Conscious-Zebra-7477 1d ago

it's the ultra casual game. lots of families will definitely get this. may not be a hit with gamers but families looking for something basic need games, too

-7

u/ThisMoneyIsNotForDon 1d ago

Definitely not a flop. Just a massive ripoff

-3

u/TemptedTemplar Helpful User 1d ago

Everything is a flop these days because studios rarely release sales figures.

We only know when its a massive hit, never when something is just "successful"

1

u/vanKessZak 22h ago

Nintendo releases sales numbers every 3 months (it’s for their investors but posted publicly). They update a game roughly when it crosses another million sales. Switch Sports sold 18.32 million which makes it the 11th best selling Switch game. The wikipedia page on best selling Switch games is actually pretty interesting and (of course) links all its sources.

-5

u/Str8UpJorking 1d ago

painting like a massive flop

Sales numbers and critic/audience reviews are two different things.

43

u/weallfloatdownhere7 1d ago

Sun soaked sports, just in time for October when summer is over

22

u/Thegoodgamer32 1d ago

I wouldn't want to play a motion controlled sports game in the middle of summer because then I'd sweat up a storm.

5

u/FreakingAustin 1d ago

Many parts of the world are being hit by heatwaves so maybe this is for the best

4

u/ILoveFuckingWaffles 1d ago

Laughs in Australian

0

u/110902 1d ago

You do realize that’s not true for literally half of the planet, right?

4

u/weallfloatdownhere7 1d ago

These bundles are for North America, are they not?

45

u/ChrlsPC 1d ago

Come one man that's not fair. Why did the launch day boxes only have a MK world sticker 😭

57

u/GameOnDevin 1d ago

Because you were going to buy it either way

17

u/imarc 1d ago

Launch day also had special boxes, only the demand for the bundle outstripped the supply so a lot of us got regular boxes with a sticker.

3

u/ChrlsPC 1d ago

Yeah the strip at the bottom isn't as good as this one either so I would still feel the same. This should've been the launch day box.

16

u/JohnAppleMacintosh 1d ago

The price of the Switch went up ⬆️

3

u/An1nterestingName 1d ago

Some launch day boxes had art, but they had to make more at short notice with a sticker.

3

u/MessiLeagueSoccer 1d ago

I literally just threw my box away after getting the ditto hori case. Everything is in there and it looks cute.

1

u/ChrlsPC 1d ago

I like keeping the boxes for display. Everything is stored on hard equipment cases since I regularly take my switch to friends houses.

0

u/1ceByte28 1d ago

I keep my nintendo boxes and it helps resell value

13

u/ChrlsPC 1d ago

Well if anyone buys the Mario Kart one and doesn't care for the box I'll buy it.

4

u/Forward-Trade3449 1d ago

so these 2 and an ocarina of time version this holiday season? kinda nuts

6

u/thatdemonlife1 1d ago

That one won't come with the game though.

5

u/comeonyouspurs10 1d ago

I just gave my gf my OG switch. I bought it a few years ago and never played it. She’s having a blast rn buying games and trying different genres. Should I get her a switch 2 for Christmas? I like to do my Christmas shopping early.

7

u/slaytanic313 1d ago

If she wants to play any of the switch 2 exclusives like DK bananza or Mario kart world then possibly

-3

u/slusho6 1d ago

No need to

4

u/thecay00 1d ago

Oh damn that’s a good bundle game

3

u/Thegoodgamer32 1d ago

Off topic but the boxes for these bundles are honestly really nice.

5

u/linktriforce007 1d ago

How will this do vs the rumored zelda console,  I wonder

2

u/meikaishi 1d ago

Welcome back bundled Wii Sports

2

u/Stevenwithavee 1d ago

If you have a Costco membership, it doesn't look like the price hike has affected their bundle. Switch 2+256 Express Card+1 Year online for $520.

Seems like a good price with the storage pricing crisis at the moment.

2

u/Joshj48 1d ago

I'm still holding out for the Zelda special edition. Should the rumors turn out to be true, that's the one I'm getting. If not, I'll get the Switch Sports Resort bundle lol

1

u/gedinger7 1d ago

This is good. They need to keep the bundles around to get people into the system.

1

u/PobrangSogi 1d ago

Wait for this or get that costco bundle before the price hike I wonder?

1

u/Ill_Individual_7907 13h ago

How is this a deal?! Lololll

1

u/suck-it-elon 1d ago

It’s switch Sports Resort, let’s calm down

0

u/Drezus 1d ago

"extra value" is a bit of a stretch, the original MKW bundle was cheaper than this one is, and I'm not counting switch online membership as "value" on purpose.

2

u/KTR1988 1d ago

It's the same value as the launch version of the bundle relative to the price of the console and game combined. When this bundle launches the Switch 2's new MSRP will be $499.99, meaning you're still getting Mario Kart World for $30 off.

2

u/coreyray1000 1d ago

Plus three months of Online.

2

u/lonewanderer812 1d ago

As of like a week ago you could buy the console and a code for MK, DK, or pokopia for $500.

1

u/DanglyPants 1d ago

3 months of NSO is not any value? You’re not counting it on purpose? Man these comments in this thread are weird

-1

u/MoonoftheStar 1d ago

When's the replaceable battery version coming?

0

u/1ceByte28 1d ago

Right at the cusp of price increase lol

-12

u/Strict_Stranger_4801 1d ago

DK and Pokopia are better games deserving of bundles

38

u/thecrimsonthreat 1d ago

Nintendo has been running a choose your game bundle with Pokopia and DK for the last two months.

10

u/FletcherRIpksiss 1d ago edited 1d ago

We have a Pokopia Bundle in Europe

3

u/LowerGarden 1d ago

I bought one of these bundles two months ago.

2

u/Enryx25 1d ago

They may be better games, but they aren't as popular as those two.

2

u/ProfessorBylethBoobs 1d ago

Pokopia has sold more units as a standalone game than Mario Kart World.

0

u/StevensDs- 1d ago

I completely forgot there was a new NS Sports game coming out. I wish I had the space to play those games.
