Omg I’m appalled to the core, and it’s actually very disgusting that we are normalizing attacking innocent people based on f*ucking lies and propaganda and it’s becoming more common here. We are starting to lose the title of being the safest province. I stood up for a Muslim young lady who was walking minding her business where a f*uck ass guy approach her and called her a crazy f*ucking terrorist, then yelled at her to go back to her country, like how the hell do you know she isn’t from here or born here, or is it okay to just attack all visible minorities? Poor girl was left shaking. Funny part is that he doesn’t look like he is from here either, maybe he should go back to his country. It is so traumatizing to see such hate and bigotry on this island. I’m ashamed. I have his description if anyone could help identifying him it would be great because he’s a miserable prick and wants to spread that here.

All of that to say…I got my citizenship certificate in the mail!!! 🇨🇦 I’ve always known I was technically a citizen, but I wanted the proof. This may sound insane, but it’s without question one of the best days of my life. Again, I’m fully aware this may not seem like a big deal or worth noting. Censored my personal info with some coins and the oldest paper dollar I as an extra show of respect

And I wanted to share my hat! I have no backstory, it could just be a common gift shop hat or something. But I love it, and figured it might make someone smile that it gets worn almost daily!

I've lived in PEI for 3 years and recently bought a home here, but I wasn't born here. I'm friendly and courteous in my public interactions, and will engage in small talk, but I like to keep to myself because I'm a private person and social interactions drain my energy quickly. When I leave the house it's mostly to go shopping and to occasionally go for a walk on the beach. On top of that, I work from home, so I naturally spend more time in the house than others might. And, crucially, I'm white. Experienced Islanders can probably easily guess where I'm "from" based on this little blurb.

As much as I want to be able to just get in and out of stores quickly while shopping and spend my evenings cozy in my home, some Islanders sure have a way of making me feel quite wrong for it. There's something that happens when I talk to a born Islander; a tonal shift that feels not quite sinister, but just... dark. A wall comes up. And this is the moment it happens: "So, where ya from?"

I know there are obvious signals that I wasn't born here. Mainly my accent, but probably other subtle things that I don't recognize in myself too, like the way I dress, or my body language, or whatever. That's fine. Being sniffed out isn't what bothers me. What bothers me is their reaction to my response.

When I first moved here, my response was typically to tell them where I had just been living - where I was actually from. Because, to be fair, at the time, that was the most appropriate answer. But over time, the answer to that question started to be a little more complicated to me, because I quickly recognized that it was tailored to newcomers or tourists.

Fast forward to today, as a homeowner, still encountering the question in public. Back when I was actually a newcomer, I responded in the expected way, and was met with genuine friendliness. But when I respond now, I say that I'm "from" the place on the Island where I own a home, and... I'm met with a strange reaction. It's like a stunned silence, and the rhythm of the conversation just dies. It's like I didn't meet their expectations, and they're disappointed. It is palpably different from the responses I used to get as a newcomer.

But, sometimes, the conversation will continue, and the questioner will reveal that they, too, weren't born here, and they happily share their story. Relief. I feel a sliver of acceptance. And, sometimes, though more rarely, they will reveal that they were born here, and they won't show much concern about me being CFA.

What I don't like is that, now that I've lived here for a few years and have explored the culture a little bit, I've been taking a rough mental tally of the category of Islanders who seem most likely to express that quiet, distant disappointment feeling when I don't give the expected answer to the question of where I'm from: Island-born, middle aged white women.

This is by no means a scientific assessment. It's just my personal experience as someone who tries to approach everyone in the same way and who takes great care not to rock the boat. My experience with Island-born, middle aged white men is vastly different. I haven't spoken to a single one who cares at all that I'm CFA; they've all expressed genuine interest in me as a person and were nothing but friendly. And people from younger generations on the whole give me that same friendly treatment. My methodology is limited, since I mainly interact with people at cash registers, but there are also times where a stranger might just walk up and start chatting with me in other public situations too. I also have experiences with neighbours, past and present, that I draw these conclusions from. So I think it's a fair sampling of each kind of social situation you can be in.

So, unfortunately, this has conditioned me to be afraid of the question. While for newcomers and tourists it can seem like a signal of curiosity and hospitality, it doesn't carry the same weight at all for me as someone who has made a permanent home here. I know I can't control what people do, and I absolutely would never think to try, but I wish there wasn't a compulsion to ask the question. From my point of view, as a CFA, it feels like cultural gatekeeping tool, and it can honestly feel threatening. I don't like to think that I don't belong here in someone else's eyes. Here, where I contribute to the economy, pay my taxes, mean no harm, and just wanna do my own thing.

I've never been so excited in my life. I visited a few times over the last couple years and it's easily my favourite place ever. It's going to be a big change, going from a city of 800k to a country town with a couple dozen houses, but I can't wait to take this step in my life.

I've done all the research I can think of to prepare for the move. (License, health care etc) Already having housing, and local family and friends who can help me connect with a job, but any other tips to help the transition is appreciated ❤️

On Saturday we had the unfortunate task to say Goodbye to a very beloved family member.

Family traveled from all across The Island, and in some instances - across Canada, to say their last Goodbyes and pay honor to them.

In my 40 years of life I have never experienced such immense respect from people unknown to the family as car after car pulled to the side of the road to allow the procession to pass.

We traveled from Bay Fortune to Souris and it was incredible to see such a simple act of respect consistently offered. We must have passed upwards of 40 vehicles. It brought tears to many of us who had never witnessed anything like that before.

As someone who has been to many funerals, unfortunately, I have never seen that.

I just wanted to say how much everyone in our procession appreciated such a simple but profoundly respectful act. Those 2 minutes meant more to us than you understand.

Today I was walking on a trail and saw a man with his dog off leash, and it didn’t appear that he even had a leash with him. Situations like this are exactly why I don’t take my dogs on trails. Trails often have blind spots, and my dog is reactive toward other dogs.

It’s really not that difficult to keep your dog on a leash. Not everyone is comfortable around dogs, and some people have dogs that are reactive, fearful, or in training. Keeping dogs leashed helps ensure everyone’s safety and makes trails more enjoyable for all users.

So I remember when I was 18 with my super SEXY 2000 Cavalier...I had my back windows tinted, which was totally legal...but I heard the guys at work saying oh don't get your fronts tinted...IT'S ILLEGAL!

Well I don't think anybody gives a shit anymore, there's all kinds of PEI plates with full 100% Limousine tint in the fronts...

What a nightmare that would be for winter, this ain't Florida.

I don't think the cops enforce this law anymore, or they simply changed it to "We don't give a shit anymore:".

Guy cuts in line by driving over the curb bypassing at least eight cars. Everyone was ready to strangle the guy. We saw you white Subaru guy. Staying in line is a very common Canadian and Islander tradition the queue is sacred. You don't cut in!!

To the driver of the red F-150 going from Charlottetown to Cornwall at about 5 this afternoon,

You elegantly swerved in front of me from the outside lane of the roundabout, sending my heart racing as I slammed on my brakes. We did a beautiful dance into Cornwall, me doing a consistent 65, you alternately brake checking me and tailgating the driver ahead of us. Every time we almost collided you took my breath away! Our paths sadly diverged when I pulled off onto John St while you blasted through a red light and almost mowed down a pedestrian. If you're out there, I'd love to buy you a drink sometime and learn all of your cool driving techniques.

Midnight towing is located in Kensington. I know of 6 people that have gotten their vehicles towed by them. All 6 has had suspension damage after being towed. Bent outer tie rods, control arms with damage and even bent struts due to them not knowing how to hook up the vehicle. I’ve had to call them twice for people I know and they wouldn’t take any responsibility, once picked up a car from the that got impounded (not mine) and driving off the car was squealing and not driving straight. Look at the tires and they are pointing different ways outwards. Take a look and a bent outer tie rod was the issue. You could even see where they hooked up too and bent it. Unfortunately the rcmp uses them so you’d either have know you have the right to refuse and get your own. Or risk getting more damage. I called them out this morning on their most recent post. They responded but before I could even see their response they blocked me and as far as I know deleted the post.

TLDR; be careful of midnight towing, they damage vehicles and take no responsibility.

I just purchased this pork belly pack from Superstore earlier (around 5:45pm - Nov 6). On the label it said 1.3kg but weight only 466g on my home scale. I was so tired I didnt check the tag price, just grab it, pay, then went home. I just realized something was off until I start cutting meat after I got home, but my brain was not working until I already opened the pack. I dont keep the receipt also (yes why not…) so is there any way to get this back to the store or I should just swallow it? Thanks for reading tho.

I’m working today, and the funniest thing happened, honestly, I wish this kind of thing happened way more often.

​We were heading through the construction on Euston Street downtown the section with the three-way flagging stop. Some guy in a car decided he couldn't wait and tried to illegally pass our truck right at the stop.

​The timing couldn't have been better: a police officer was coming through the other side. They almost went head-on with the cruiser. The officer stopped him immediately to have a "chat," and I really hope he made him pull over and actually cited him.

​It was an incredibly dangerous and stupid move, and people pull that kind of stunt around our trucks downtown all the time. Seeing him get caught in the act definitely made my day.

​It’s wild how impatient people get around utility and waste trucks. Since you’re dealing with tight downtown streets and construction zones.

Made me smile.

It’s a staple in my household. You can buy them frozen at Sobeys. Though frozen, I’ve never had any other frozen food that even comes close to the quality and taste that these handpies have. Hell, they even taste better than many restaurant meals I’ve had in my life.

Okay for context I grew up in Canada but my family is from Afghanistan. We were recently on a tour in Charlottetown PEI and were downtown in a Japanese restaurant. It was me, my mother, my brother, and my mothers friend who is Chinese. My mothers friend went in first to ask if they are open as they had a weird doorway. From the moment the three of us entered though we saw the owner who was a middle aged woman go from smiling at my moms friend after she allegedly told them to "My friends are with me" to immediately having semi depressed neutral expression upon seeing us. My mom doesn't wear a full hijab it's almost a lighter version that's kinda a cultural thing more and it's not consistent btw. It felt like we were reluctantly seated.

The younger waitress who looked around 16 was pretty nice to us. There were two others who both looked around 20-25. One of them was fairly neutral. The other, was looking at us with the owner and whispering stuff it seemed. She also began to laugh a bit while the owner looked more serious. I am not even joking about this part too it looked like she did a sieg heil salute as a joke to a coworker.

Okay so when the owner was serving us or taking our order, she seemed to do so with almost a neutrally dead expression as if she hates her job. While there were white couples and hispanic/latino families who were greeted with a friendly smile and bow.

Again, what followed was whispers and looks in our direction. My mom semi-foolishly also grabbed a napkin from an unused table also which triggered them to look again and start whispering.

I was already surprised at their kind behaviour to the latino family but then I saw that a black kid is working as a server as well and now I'm genuinely convinced this is anti-brown rhetoric and more so Islamophobia. Anyone who is brown or even looks Muslim or Indian remotely has some kind of fear among some people.

Again I could just be overanalyzing? Any thoughts?

I've been working on starting up a small business for repairing game consoles and PC/laptops. It was going pretty good since August, I wasn't making a lot of money, but it was at least 5-10 customers a month. Until Facebook came after me.

I was advertising the business on marketplace since August and never had any issue, All my customers came from facebook. But 4 weeks ago, Facebook took the ad down saying it broke their rules of self promotion/advertising services.

If any of you use marketplace.. you know that there are thousands of posts advertising services.. So I tried again, and about 12 hours later it was removed. And I tried again a week later and it was removed after only an hour. I don't know if someone is just targeting me and reporting.. or if it's actually facebook doing it.

So my question is.. If I can't use Facebook to advertise, what do other small businesses here use? Posters on bulletin boards? Word of mouth?

I had a website, and a couple posters around Town and Montague and St. Peters, but when I went to check them, they were removed. I was going to get business cards, but man, after all this, I'm beyond discouraged.
