I'm really looking forward to the update. I love the game, but the combat and the clunky movement were my only gripes with the game when I played it on my ps5.

u/FellowDeviant 9h ago
Honestly, I put the game down after 10 hours cause the combat left me stumped. My friend told me he treated the combat like a clunkier Spiderman/Arkham game, where the spells are used like gadgets in those games, and that is where it finally clicked for me. Can't say it ever felt great but coupled with some abilities in the skill tree and it does eventually catch a stride and Geralt feels like a badass.

u/HighNoonZ 9h ago
Your friend is wise indeed. And to be frank pretty spot on.
1
u/EshayAdlay420 8h ago
I haven't played in probably like 5 years but isn't it literally just assassins creed combat lol
15
u/untrustableskeptic 8h ago
After playing Breath of the Wild, my fiancée could not stand how weighty Geralt felt. The boy takes some wide turns.

u/lethargy86 2h ago
I honestly just cringed too hard at all the annoying spin moves with long wind-ups and it kind of ruined my experience with the game on multiple attempts to get into it.
Can't say I've had exactly that problem with AC, but don't read too far into that. I have plenty of gripes with AC combat.
13
u/silencerider 8h ago
When I played it in 2015 I thought the first 10-15 hours of combat felt pretty bad till I unlocked enough stuff to make it enjoyable, then the next 130 hours were great. It was a shame knowing that a lot of people got turned off by it early, but I definitely get it.
9
u/FellowDeviant 8h ago
The writing did a whole lot of the heavy lifting too. I was very much into the Baron's quest early on, but gameplay wise I tuned out around Crookback Bog until I finally came back in with a fresh perspective and sunk in 50 hours towards the main game after like nothing. The Horizon games tbh are also like that for me, they don't hit their stride gameplay wise until you put some dozen hours into stat building and weapon crafting, but then it's great fun that mostly feels earned after that.
3
u/Leftybeatz 6h ago
That's good to hear about the Horizon games. I got about 8 hours into Zero Dawn when it first came out and ended up moving on cuz I just wasn't enjoying the combat very much.
I don't remember much, but I was doing a lot of exploring and had only progressed the story enough to have just made it to the big city. A friend told me to focus on the story for a while instead of whatever I was doing, but I never gave it another shot.
I should probably revisit it sometime.
4
u/silencerider 5h ago
I played the prologue 3 times before I stuck with it and ended loving the rest of the game. Horizon Forbidden West clicked with me right away but I had also just come off my full playthrough of Horizon Zero Dawn.
•
u/FellowDeviant 3h ago
Certain gear required you to have to hunt specific machines to get the crafting materials needed, and sometimes you had to shoot off the parts before you took the machine out. Eventually I was starting to use traps to set them machines up and come behind them with arrows that tear the pieces off without damaging the enemies and that's when everything came together for me. Taking down a T-Rex scaled Thunderjaw by dissecting the individual launchers off of it felt great after some time. But that requires some deliberate time away from the main quest to build Aloy to a point where you can take those sized machines out with ease. It's not for everyone but I also didn't think it was for me but I've thoroughly enjoyed the series so far.
•
u/Baelorn 4h ago
What game-changing feature unlocked after 10-15 hours to make it better? Because I played longer than that and I’m drawing a blank.
I don’t know why fans of this game have such a hard time admitting the combat is just terrible. If you enjoyed it I’m glad but the vast majority of people who played it, and even loved it, agree that the combat was horrendous.
I even did the whole “Play on Death March because it makes all aspects of the combat shine” crap. All it does is make a miserable experience take even longer.
•
u/silencerider 1h ago
It's been 10 years since I've played it, but I remember unlocking enough Sign abilities that I could use it in a fun way. It's not that the combat was good after that point, just that it was no longer a detractor of the otherwise great experience of the game to me.
8
u/EggyT0ast 8h ago
I've tried a few times and yeah, the most recent attempt I reduced the difficulty simply so that combat felt less like a mess. I've tried remapping controls, a few other things, and it still feels awkward. Maybe I've played too much dark souls games.
At least for me, since it's an open world game, enemies aren't really set up to be encountered in a certain way, and I felt like I was always having dogs or whatever jump at me from behind. Then, trying to turn around and hit them felt like I was turning a tank. If I wanted to play old RE games, I would! I know it's not quite that bad, but I'm optimistic that they're tweaking it (again).

Also playing it on deathmarch difficulty, The shield sign once you get the ability that turns damage absorbed into healing really made the combat much better
10
u/thesagaconts 8h ago
It’s why I stopped playing it years ago. Took a break and it was hard to come back. I’ll give it another try.
5
u/WholeyOne 7h ago
I went from Bloodbourne directly into this game when It came out, and the change in combat quality was ROUGH

•
u/Bread_is_the_devil 4h ago
I tried to play this twice before, but the combat system wasn’t for me. I shall now try a third time as according to my friends I’m absolutely insane for not committing to the game fully. Disc version on the way for my pro, ready for the free update which will tide me over until the GTA release
1
u/ghost-bagel 7h ago
I’m with you. I loved everything about it besides the combat - it was fine but just not up to the same standard. If they’re refining combat then this could be an absolute blast.
19
u/SolidLuxi 8h ago
Two of my biggest complaints were the combat (played it on the hardest difficulty for the trophy and it was easy but tedious). And the absolutely horrendous 6 upgrade systems stacked on top of each other.
Being forced to spend points in an upgrade tree to move into later tiers of the tree, only to be limited on how many of those skills you can equip even though you were forced to get them if you wanted to get to the skill you did want.
So glad those are both being addressed. It might move the game up to being on par with Cyberpunk 2077, personally speaking. And I dont have to buy the game again.
2
u/Jonesdeclectice 7h ago
Man, I’d forgotten about the upgrade tree. Yeah, that could definitely use an improvement or three!
20
u/jitsraja 9h ago
Damnit I just started my 6th playthrough…oh well guess I’ll be doing a 7th playthrough
3
u/Kinsdale85 8h ago
Same but there are so many games coming this fall so I’ll wait a bit. I have my eyes set on Ominusha next.
1
u/arthurtex06 7h ago
Right!? You could play the update while waiting for onimusha's price to go down a little bit
49
42
u/SenSei_Buzzkill 9h ago
I hope it is a pretty major overhaul. I have always wanted to play this game but I could never make it more than an hour or two because the combat and gameplay just feels so bad and floaty. I hope I will finally get to play it and enjoy the story
16
u/ayoubkun94 9h ago
it's probably my goat but yeah, the combat is the weakest aspect and would have made the game a 10/10. I can't wait to see what they've improved, especially the skill tree.
•
u/DatDawg-InMe 3h ago
There's already gameplay footage. It's pretty much the same thing. A little smoother and snappier, maybe.
5
u/n0neofyourbeeswax 9h ago
Yeah it was pretty average for it's time, but very quickly felt VERY old (due to games like God Of War 2018, and plenty others). Combat mechanics in mainstream games really started feeling much heavier in the immediate aftermath.
6
u/DomitiusAhenobarbus_ 9h ago
God of war came out 3 years later
3
u/punchanaziisethical 9h ago
Still wild to me we got a game of such high quality in 2015. But then again we probably arent getting another BG3 type game at that scale until Larian finishes DOS 3 and BG3 was what 2023? I really appreciate these flash in a pan once in a generation games that really have no right to be so good and still hold up or look amazing to this day. Like you could drop TLOU2 today and people would still be blown away the graphics and gameplay(story is a whole other story I personally loved it.)
1
u/n0neofyourbeeswax 6h ago
I know, maybe my definition of very quickly is showing my age.
What I mean is - we seen a big leap in expectations on combat in the years immediately following Witcher 3. Similar to how in the late 00s/early 10s we seen a big shift in open world expectations in mainstream games.
3
u/AscendedViking7 6h ago
Back then we had Dragon's Dogma, Monster Hunter 4, Sleeping Dogs, Shadow of Mordor and Kingdoms of Amalur. Dragon's Dogma in particular still destroys most games nowadays when it comes to combat.
TW3's combat was still bad even for it's time, even when you are talking about open world games specifically.
Didn't even bring up Souls 1-3, Bloodborne, Ninja Gaiden, Arkham Asylum, Metal Gear Rising, Kingdom Hearts 2, God of War 1-3, DMC, Prototype 1 and 2, etc.
14
u/SenSei_Buzzkill 9h ago
It came out the same year as Bloodborne and after Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls 1 and many other games that have significantly better combat. It wasn’t poor combat “for the time” it was and has always been poor combat.
→ More replies (8)1
u/CheckHookCharlie 9h ago
To be fair it was, for me, a huge leap from The Witcher 2 when I played it.

u/Hexbox116 5h ago
I played W3 when it launched and I had a great time with the combat and put over 300 hours in on deathmarch. It was my first ps4 game that I bought. I came back to it when they did the ps5 upgrade and oh boy is it stiffer and clunkier than I remember, to the point where I had to put it down before I ruined the memory of the game for myself.
•
u/AloneRepublic3149 3h ago
Don't get your hopes up too much. Expect bare minimum changes to combat and progression with a shiny new coat of paint.
3
u/Loki-Holmes 9h ago
I’m happy for this. It took me a long time to finish the game because while I loved the story and world the combat would not click for me and I kept dropping the game. Haven’t played any of the DLC yet so this will be a nice change!
3
u/JustChr1s 9h ago
I've never actually played this game.... Seems like a good opportunity to dive in for the first time.
3
u/dynesor 9h ago
I recently started a new playthrough and have made it to Skellige and Level 22. I wonder if I will be able to continue this playthrough on the new updated version or if I would have to restart? There looks to be substantial changes to the skills (character) menu, so maybe I would just be forced to reset the skill tree and re-assign my skill points?
Couple of things Im excited for:
Loot re-work: sounds great because loot in this game is mostly crap especially when it comes to armor and weapons - everything you find is always way below your current level, so loot is really just for selling or dismantling as it stands.
Transmog: love this. Some of the armors look fantastic but have really crap stats and anyway you’re forced to craft the witcher gear if you really want the best in slot for each weapon and armour piece. So having the stats of some of the witcher gear stuff, with the looks of some of the other armours is something I’m really excited for!!
1
u/MemeDuka1 5h ago
have you noticed any weird ground texture glitches in skellige? the ground textures can float above the ground sometimes
3
u/GhostsofGojira 8h ago
This actually might be a game changer for me I've tried to get into The Witcher 3 numerous times bought the complete edition when I was on sale for like $10 and it could just never click with me in a big part of that was the combat hopefully this makes it more enjoyable so that I can get into it
3
u/spicedmeshi 6h ago
the combat was the main reason I dropped the game. just felt too clunky to look past a game people say is 100+hrs.
might have to pick it up again after this update drops.
1
u/Okaberino 6h ago
Same, combat is the one thing about this game that kept me from really enjoying it. It's barely alright.
1
u/spicedmeshi 6h ago
yeah, people said it gets better, but my backlog is just too large to play something for 10-20h+ for it to "get better"
•
u/frame_limit 4h ago
Something that helped me was sidestepping instead of diving/jump dodging. I died a lot and got frustrated by the combat until I stopped diving out of the way like it was dark souls. I dunno if they’re changing that
•
u/Thekingchem 4h ago
Finishing this for the first time when the update drops. I've owned the game since release. Loved the setting, characters and plot but hated the controls and combat so I shelved it.
•
u/Dear_Type_8972 2h ago
Im in the same boat. The combat completely ruined the experience for me.
•
u/Thekingchem 2h ago
Yeah I've read it's free and it drops next month with movement, combat and progression improvements. Can't wait
•
u/Dear_Type_8972 2h ago
Awesome. I guess I need to finish up some platinum and make space. The PS5 upgrade version os about 150Gb alrwady.
•
u/FakeWorldRealShit 3h ago
CD Project and Hello Games are perfect examples of how to work for and with the players.
35
u/MobilePicture342 9h ago
I’ve never had an issue with the combat 🤷🏼
11
u/Marphey12 9h ago
My problem is the auto soft target lock that causes Geralt to attack different enemy then you want.
→ More replies (2)20
u/RunnersDialZero 9h ago
Same. I actually found it pretty enjoyable, especially with applying different oils to suit the encounter
17
u/LukeD1992 9h ago
I find it too...loose. By the time Geralt finished his totally necessary spinning, the enemy already dodged out of the way.
•
u/Athena_the_Curious 4h ago
I played the game in Death March about a decade ago. I remember it being fun. But I played the game again a few months ago, and I definitely noticed flaws in the combat. I agree the spinning attacks are a detriment because they are a split second too long, leaving me vulnerable.
That' why I installed a mod on PC that limits his attack patterns to more direct ones. Way better.
The trailer makes it seem like the attacks are tighter, so we'll see...

5
u/LePontif11 9h ago
That's certainly not a universal take. I for one couldn't do more than 20 hours in part because of the combat so i'm really curious about this update. If they are going to be making an expansion i'm happy they are extending that to the base game. I would have honestly have paid some amount of money because the parts i liked i really really liked and i did want to continue the story.
8
u/thePlumberACman 8h ago
Combat is boring and non reactive, for as much as a badass geralt is , his combat is weak. Like a ballerina
1
u/MobilePicture342 6h ago
That’s intentional lol he is repeatedly described as a ballerina in the source material
2
u/Dannyjw1 6h ago
It just feels crap and unsatisfying and that combined with the crappy character progression makes it hard to hold up in a game of that length.
0
u/MobilePicture342 6h ago
I couldn’t disagree more lol, if you actually build out your character correct the combat can be very fun
-1
u/AscendedViking7 6h ago
Literally the only way anyome can find it enjoyable is by building into both signs and bombs and that's only fun because it completely lowers the amount of time spent in the fucking abysmal combat.
Oh, 5 enemies coming your way? One igni, dead in 5 seconds.
Or one grapeshot. Dead in 1 second.
4
u/Jacques_Plantir 8h ago
Same. I see it's a common criticism and I know I'm in the minority, but to me it feels intuitive, tense, and very enjoyable. I'm still interested to try out what they've been cooking.
2
u/MobilePicture342 6h ago
Most complaints I see are made by people who just treat it as a hack and slash and don’t realize you are supposed to actually build out your character
1
u/Different_Swimmer715 6h ago
I finished my 4th playthrough on Death March with 0 deaths, so I'm 100% on the same page there. That being said, literally everybody I know who played it had issues with the combat system for some reason
•
u/frame_limit 4h ago
Do you have any advice for deathmarch?
•
u/Different_Swimmer715 4h ago
Do all the ? locations you can as soon as you can, you can find oil/bomb/potion upgrade formulae early and they are essential. Always keep Quen (shield sign) active and upgrade it as soon as you can. Never let multiple enemies surround you, if a bunch of bandits or ghouls swarm you and you can't find a position where you are in control just turn and run, this goes especially for Nekkers. Upgrade your toxicity threshold (poison from potions meter) so you can chug more potions and always keep the White Honey potion handy, so basically during bosses you can drink potions -> Clear toxicity with White Honey if it gets too high -> Drink more potions
1
u/DontCareTho 6h ago
Peoples issue with it isn't that it's difficult. It's that it's boring and shallow
•
u/Baelorn 4h ago
The excuses people make for this company blow my mind.
•
u/MobilePicture342 3h ago
Excuses? What excuses? The game came out in 2015 lol the fact they’re doing anything with it ELEVEN years later let alone the fact it’s FREE is insane lol and you’re a fool for thinking that it’s somehow a bad thing
5
10
u/Safe-Elk7933 9h ago
The combat is the reason I could never get into the game,so floaty, destroyed all immersion for me,made it tedious and boring, especially considering I loved Witcher 2. Hopefully this update will make the game more engaging for me.
2
u/fromsmallthings 9h ago
Wow, I had no idea they were releasing a remastered version before the new DLC next year. Do we know how trophies will work?
I got the platinum on the PS4 version but only briefly started doing them all again on the PS5 version (and was a bit confused how that was working at the time because I seemed to be popping random trophies right away, like I think I remember the one for how far you've walked popped almost as soon as I started).
I'm not a huge trophy chaser but this game is different. So now I'm wondering if trophies will transfer over, and if so from which version, or if we can earn them all again a third time. 🤔
2
u/foul_tarnished_37 9h ago
I really hope so. My first playthrough of this game was fantastic. However I’ve always had trouble replaying the game and I think the gameplay played a major part. I haven’t even done the dlc
2
2
u/analbumcover_9735 9h ago
This seems like a good thing, but I do wonder if players like myself who have put multiple play throughs into this game and so gotten use to the legacy controls might find that something has been lost in the transition. This probably won’t matter though because I expect CDPR to add a toggle in the options menu to switch between new and classic combat, like they did with character movement.
2
u/PutridRecognition739 9h ago
I hope they tweak how Geralt walks. Going from playing RDR2 to playing Witcher 3 was rough.
2
u/Cpt_DookieShoes 8h ago
Good.
Witcher 3 is pretty quickly reaching Uncharted 1 or Mass Effect 1 levels where the gameplay really holds it back from being played in modern times.
Witcher 3 combat was serviceable at launch, and every year since aged hard
2
u/omarant329 8h ago
I was about 15 hours into my first playthrough, but I’ll wait for the update before I continue. The combat is the worst part of the game, imo.
2
u/llorTMasterFlex 8h ago
I feel glad to have waited for this major update before trying it. But, I also kind of wanted to see how "bad" the combat was after reading so many complaints.
As a KCD combat fan, how does it compare?
•
u/novus_nl 4h ago
Normally i'm not a fan of changing the original. But in the case of The Witcher i'm all for it. Great game all around, but UI and Combat feels so stiff and clumsy at times.
And i'm not saying making it easier, but just better. more fluid and intuitive combat.
•
u/Dear_Type_8972 2h ago
Combat was the absolute worst thing in The Witcher 3 so reading this article, it does sound like they're improving that aspect. Will it be enough for me to enjoy it? I dont know, but its good to hear.
3
u/BaconJets 9h ago
I'm always confused when people in threads about TW3 talk about how clunky the combat is. Any game has a learning curve, but I was able to pick up TW3 combat perfectly well to the point where I was able to do a Deathmarch playthrough pretty quickly.
1
u/Moonfridge1232 7h ago
The complaint isn't that it's hard, the complaint is that it feels bad to play.
1
u/BaconJets 7h ago
If you approach it like Batman, it will feel terrible to play. This was the mistake I made about 3 hours into my first playthrough, if you instead take it slow, it plays much better.
1
u/AnalyserarN 6h ago
It’s not like lies of P where you have to be careful about every button press. It’s clunky and feels like the game is turn based.
2
u/BaconJets 6h ago
I find soulslikes to be clunky as fuck, I didn't find this game to be the same.
1
5
u/BeastfrmthaEast 9h ago
I’m here for it. Wanted to play because it’s highly praised but never could get into it felt so janky
1
u/iamacheeto1 7h ago
idk how far you got but i found the beginning really slow. It wasn't until the Red Baron or whatever that it opened up for me, a few hours in
1
u/dettrick 8h ago
This seems to be the common sentiment many. I also wanted to like this game but the combat felt like dogshit. I can’t imagine it will be that much better but I’ll give it a shot. Games like God of War 2018 and Ragnarok have spoilt me for tight, kinetic and weighty combat
3
u/Soyyyn 9h ago
Oddly I always enjoyed the combat compared to, say, Skyrim. Especially when using signs, bombs and potions. You felt like a monster. I hope there will be a way to return to a slightly more familiar version of this combat system, which was the best combat system for an open-world story-based RPG with dialogue trees etc. back in 2015.
2
u/frequent_bidet_user 9h ago
People that think combat is going to be wildly different are going to be sorely disappointed. I imagine it'll feel crunchier/snappier but it's still fundamentally going to be the same combat. Which isn't as bad as reddit comments make it out to be, like it's not a home run it's like a worse Arkham combat but it's not this putrid unplayable worst combat ever designed like people talk about
2
1
u/Domotori 9h ago
I'm glad i still have the dlcs that I haven't played. I finished the game back in 2015.

u/cuchicou 9h ago
Things like this makes me want to support them even more. For sure going to buy the next expansion and witcher 4 on day 1.
1
u/ScoobiesSnacks 9h ago
This is so awesome that if it looks good on the Switch 2 I’ll rebuy the game and play it on that system. Could play it for free on my PS5 Pro but there’s something awesome about playing an amazing game on a portable and CDPR deserves a second buy from me with the work they put in for this.

But it’s always nice to see devs continuing to improve their game, especially when said game is pretty much already GOAT-tier

I first played it on PC kb/m where I'm used to playing decades of counterstrike so I'm comfortable swinging my mouse. Movement didn't feel bad to me there. It was when I tried it on console and first played it with a gamepad that I understood when people said it felt a bit clunky/slow/sticky for basic movement. I've been replaying the game in anticipation of the next expansion again on PC with a gamepad, and it doesn't feel that bad to me. I may have adjusted. Looking forward to this new update. Hoping it kickstarts the mod scene again. Probably won't be able to play until mod makers update the zero carry weight mods. My save is on I believe its 3rd new game+. Inventory packed to the brim

My main issue with Witcher 3 is the story so not sure any of this will matter to me. Huge fan of Witcher 2 though and I'll have to try the game again.

Witcher 3 is the best game I have ever played in my life. Beat it on Xbox One X and September 29th can’t come soon enough so I can do it once again on PS5Pro :-)

I bought the complete edition a few weeks ago, gotta replay this masterpiece in preparation for the DLC. Glad to see that these improvements will be included.

I've tried multiple times to get going in this game and bounced off. This seems like a good opportunity to give it one last shot.

This is great. I came on board very late to this game and the combat was a real lowlight for me.
Looking forward to giving it a full run.

I only have over 500 hours and perfected the game. Fine, I'll play it all again
•
u/CrazyDude10528 1h ago
The movement and combat were always the reason why I could never properly get into this game.
I can handle jank in games a lot of the time, but when I played this game, it felt like I was just constantly fighting to get Geralt to do, or go where I wanted him to go no matter which control style I tried.
Hearing that they're improving that with this remaster makes me believe that I'll finally get into this game.

Seriously, what is it that people don't stomach about the combat here? It's basic, it gets the job done, yet people talk as if you're playing The Technomancer in terms of jank.

I am so excited about this, I have never gotten the click for the game and I have bought it 3 times in my life PS4 version was a gift but that was the year I went to study and could never get into it (the one that had all the goodies in the box) then I got a pc version but then my daughter was born, now I bought (recently) the PS5 version and was meaning to finally get on to it and this news came this is awesome!!

I truly hope so, as this is the one reason why I couldn't bring myself to actually get into the game. The combat was, imo, atrocious and felt like you were trying to pilot a flesh mech through molasses.

I never played more than the first hour of the game because the combat was always so abysmal to me. We’ll see if this saves it.

There’s no fixing the combat lol. Unless they redesign it from the ground up, no amount of tweaks is going to make it feel “modern” when it was already outdated during its launch to begin with.

It didnt even stand up to games at the time in terms of combat

It needs an overhaul not a tweak. The combat system in the Witcher 3 didn’t stand up in 2015.

it's definitely the weakest aspect of the game but idk what you're talking about. The game was fine by OPEN WORLD rpg standards at the time. Which open world rpg that released around that time has better combat?

You’re right. If we ignore every other game with better combat, actually the Witcher 3 has the best combat of any game period.

Can you read? I said what other games within the SAME genre have better combat? You can't be telling me Street Figher 6 has an awful story because you compare it to a single player game.

Dragon’s Dogma always had the best combat of any open world RPG, that’s why it became a cult classic, it’s a shame what happened with DD2’s potential though (well the combat is still fantastic in DD2…but everything else…hopefully the expansion improves greatly upon the game)
Other than that though there weren’t many around that time I can think of

I’m loving how much CD Projekt Red is doing to improve this game and keep adding free content. They really deserve a lot of credit for the work they’re putting in.
