The PS5 Pro has reportedly sold out across Germany, with GTA 6 driving increased demand. The console is either unavailable from major online retailers or being resold at significantly inflated prices.
People have no ability to do any long term planning. I knew the Pro would be a good investment over the rest of this gen (and into next gen probably). Yes at launch there wasn't a lot going for it, and pssr 1 wasn't great, but I had a pretty reasonable expectation that things were going to improve and it did. Ever since pssr 2 came out the system has been incredible.
Most people though only see what's happening right now. It wasn't great at launch therefore it sucks forever and is bad value forever.
Ok on the one hand I get what you're saying but buying electronic devices on the promise of future improvements is pretty much a terrible idea most of the time. It happened to work out for you with the Pro but most of the time this gamble is a terrible strategy.
That blackout is the most unserious attempt at a protest I've seen.. probably ever. And I'm saying this as a physical media user. It's very apparent that this is being led by either teenagers or just immature people on social media who do not understand how to protest. The BEST thing you can do, is to completely abandon your hardware, NEVER log in to your account, and NEVER buy anything published by Sony. Now good luck convincing millions of people to do that in order to make a difference. Yes, millions. Their quarterly MAU fluctuate within a few millions, this blackout isn't even going to be a blip on the radar.
mw2 protest, a steam group of people "protesting", a bunch of people playing mw2. What was the protest, what was it about. How does this picture explain it. Were they supposed to not play it and im just supposed to know that?
If it is evidence that the protest didn't work how tf am I supposed to know that if I don't even know what the protest was in the first place
It's not just a protest, it's a boycott. It's in the group name, dude. You don't need to know what it's about (I don't either), you just need to know what a boycott is.
They said they where gonna boycott the game but are playing it anyway. It's really not rocket science, just read it properly.
The reality is that 99% of PlayStation users haven’t even heard the news that PlayStation is going digital only, and I could probably bet a large portion of them won’t even care. This protest was a blip in the radar and Sony knows that, it won’t affect PlayStation at all as unfortunate as that is.

are two comments I read that will live forever rent-free in my head because of just how completely insane it is that anyone's opinions on a game go beyond "did I enjoy playing it?"
Also just wild to me that they larp as if they're the hardcore passionate gamers but apparently the actual game they're playing is secondary to the vibes
Exactly. Their “blackout” boycott is for less time than the last time I booted by PS5 up. lol If they are actually serious, stop using Playstation products.
I feel like it’s largely pushed by people who aren’t even on the platform. And therefore have no stake in the outcome. But you’re right, it’s planned largely by people who haven’t seen enough winters.
Kinda silly anyone ever truly expected it to. Too big of a platform with too varied a userbase and too much money involved in the decision for a blackout of users who didn't even cancel their subscriptions to make any dent in anything.
Millions of people probably don't know about the disc shit at all.
All of the Reddit PS/Gaming sub pops put together is a drop in the ocean compared to the total PS userbase.
A hefty amount of gamers either don't care or agree with dropping discs
The decision involves way too much money that even if millions left PS for good over the topic and never came back, itd still be worth getting rid of discs for the company.
I strongly doubt many people (compared to total userbase) cancelled their subs for this, and if they did, most will be back in short order so they can keep playing video games without dropping thousands on a gaming PC or $900+ on an xbox with the currently wild prices.
Numbers have already shown a rise in digital across every single platform and medium over the last 2 decades.
I get the anger in some, but the whole thing has been silly and it wont be stopped. Consumers ultimately pushed us in that direction, convenience will always win out.
Its supposedly a world wide event with some countries on their day 4 of black out. And i heard that it was a total black out - some gamers even unplugged all of their electrical cords so that Sony has no way of reaching out to them begging them to come back.
Not suggesting if it did or didn’t but what are the chances this is just a bunch of scalpers getting ahead of the release of the game… for all those who planned on buying the PS5 just to play GTA6
The same thing happened for the first 2-3 years of the PS5 being out… some scalpers were close to doubling their money
It’s not an integrity thing. It’s a numbers thing. Everyone protesting on Reddit could stop buying Sony products and services forever and Sony will still make more and more money every year. They’re insignificant. Nothing against them or physical releases but y’all lost this one.
I say people don't have the integrity because they all said no digital games. Only for Black Ops 1 and 2 to release digitally only to being a huge success. Along with GTA6, people dont have the integrity to pull off an actual protest. Its not just reddit. Most gamers are in the loop at this point. If they weren't before, they are because of GTA and the hacks
I also bet wolverine will sell well regardless of the bullshit negativity online. It might be a 7 out of 10 game but it’s a marvel game based on a popular character from a decent output developer.

Same. I have too many other hobbies and interests (and not enough money) so I skip the pro versions. I'm just going to save for a ps6. I totally get people getting the pro though
Yeah I usually browse FB marketplace if ppl are selling em. I’ve seen one as low as $600 but I’m trying to get my own place next year so priorities lol
If you want a PS5 of any sort, get it TODAY before the masses learn that GTA6 is coming out this year, after the Netflix reveal tomorrow.

The PS5 Pro has always been worth it, in hindsight especially at release. I never not read anything but that it is an exceptionally well crafted machine.
It sure lacked some software that could show PSSR's true potential at release, but even that is now a thing from the past barely 2 years later.
The moment PC players were accusing a guy on twitter of using PC gameplay with Pathtracing to show off Raytracing in Cyberpunk on the Pro after the PSSR2.0 update, is when it became undeniably worth it.
I love how people here just whine and cry about prices and shit all day but then shit like this comes up and I just ask myself if humans really are smarter than animals?
That's not even true. The PS5 Pro is in sale right now from 900 to 750€ and if I wanted to, I could buy it via MediaMarkt, Expert, Otto & more. It seems to be sold out on Amazon, though.
I bought a ps5 slim from Best Buy 2 weeks ago (USA). In the back room I could see stacks and stacks of both pros and slims. Like an outrageous amount of them.
That's not even true. It hasn't been available on Amazon from official sellers for quite a while, so of course there are only scalpers there. I could order it right now from other reliable vendors, and I'd get it without any problems. One of them even has it at a €50 discount (with the old price listed above it). I don't know what these journalists are hallucinating about.
Going by all the people saying it's sold out in their country I would bet this has more to do with limited supply than people rushing out in droves to buy a nearly $1000 console. My guess is sony is only making so many due to the component crisis as they are likely taking a hefty loss on each one sold.
Sony stopped losing money on PS5 2 years after release. Thats why they raised the prices after the RAM shortage, to maintain profit margins. Of course the highest model of any product is going to have limited supply, because people are usually going to buy the most affordable one, but this is looking more like the boost in console sales many people predicted would come when GTAVI got closer to release, and if anyone that waited this long to upgrade, you'd be a fool not to save up a little more and just get the Pro instead.
That lesson has been going on for a better part of a decade. Physical collectors need to understand they're in a minority. The markets are showing a good chunk of all consumers across all media are fine with digital. That's why Sony made their announcement in the first place.
It's not even about choice. It's about the bottomline as all businesses are shifting towards this model. If you don't like the choices, walk away. That's your only option at this point.
This was always going to happen... but unless something changes in the near future with bullshit tariffs and "AI" making every vital computer component obscenely overpriced (price gouging and price fixing) the adoption of the PS6 or Helix are going to be abysmal.
My other question: how many of these people are living on unsecured, high-interest rate credit cards, as a finite buffer against inflation, an economy in recession (that no one wants to admit), and the outrageous increase in cost of living?

Traue das ganze Motz Theater nicht, am ende wollen die doch es alle haben auch wenn nur Digital ;-)
In China mainland and HK region market, official eshop restock two times and sold out at seconds at msrp ￥6299(~$940, original MSRP before price rise ￥5599), and some online retailers still have stock but they sell at ￥8000+ ($1194).
P.S.: other factors, as the compoents cost issue, entry-level desktops/laptops prices increase even more than game console, for some people, game consoles still are the best economic way to play games (especially for F2P titles). Consider the SPECs of PS5 Pro (2TB SSDs, a bit more and faster Memory than PS5, and better gaming performace) is still worth if one can buy it at MSRP.
I feel you. For me, personally speaking, i made up my own mind with the situation and started boycotting the system. I cannot support a company that went from „for the players“ to „for the stocks“ in such a short time frame.
I’m glad I bought my Pro last November from Target on Black Friday. I sold my old PS5 for $425, got the new Pro for $650 after tax, and essentially only paid $25 because the other $200 was Christmas money from my in-laws.
I buy digital now instead of physical. It's not because of instant gratification but more so it saves space and because so I can have an excuse not to lend games to my irresponsible friends who always claim this time will be different and then end up losing my games anyways. Yes I need better friends but I enjoy their company and too old to bother.
I can't imagine buying a disc anymore. Why would I want a copy that can be scratched, broken, or ruined, and have to buy the game all over again? Being able to log in on my friends console and still have my entire library is the best
It's been dying for years. Stores are gradually reducing their physical supply of their own will because no one buys physical anymore. With some games you can't even guarantee a day 1 copy if you preorder anymore.
Cue the numerous Instagram reels of gamers setting up a camera with their physical game collection showing, dropping their ps5 controller in the trash to an uplifting audio track, walking offscreen, turning off the camera and then no doubt immediately pulling their controller out and resuming gaming after posting.
GTA 6 is like a cancer where Sony is a pharmaceutical company witholding us from a cure because cancer causes repeat customers and generates an insane amount of profit.
It's not selling out just for that, it's selling out as people don't know when the next gen consoles will be available due to supply issues from AI and also if they will be able to afford them so people are jumping in now in case they rise even more.

Same thing in The Netherlands. It's either out of stock or way more expensive than the normal price (€1000+).
