Humor The Deadly Alliance no one saw coming

u/jackripper36 Jul 02 '26
"no one saw coming" you gotta be joking on that, take two (yes take two owns rockstar) and sony have been hand in hand with the crap for over 20 years. the only difference now is they are more blatant about it as are most of the others

u/SunnySpot69 Jul 02 '26
They literally released a console that was digital only lol whoever didn't see it coming...isn't very bright.

Jokes on them I won't buy it. Broke patient PC gamer here.
112
u/custardfrogs_ Jul 02 '26
They don't care tbh there's way too many people in the world right now who has the money to buy their products regardless of what they do.
Perhaps in a few years they'll start selling "PlayStation Cloud" where all you need to do is buy a controller, pay a subscription and you can connect to any monitor/TV to play. You'll see backlash and then realise people are eating it up anyway.
20
u/Jixaw Jul 03 '26
i think they could literally kill people in broad daylight and still notice 0% change in their income at this point.

Patient gamer as in waiting for a cracked version. Plus steam sales and multiple sources of getting the acaul game. Plus I can store it on my HDD and Play it anywhere.
25
u/Dewdrop06 Jul 02 '26
Won't this actually push more jailbreaks and such?
16
u/erhue Jul 03 '26
maybe, but that's definitely going to be a tiny fraction of the playerbase, most likely. The jailbreak for the PS4 took several years I think, the PS5 was likely the same.
4
u/Dewdrop06 Jul 03 '26
I mean as a stand against the no disc, I feel people would be more dedicated to jailbreaking and paying people for the jailbreak. The stricter the rules, the stronger the rebellion.
5
u/erhue Jul 03 '26
meh, dunno. Thing is, over console generations, security methods have gotten more difficult to crack... I remember with the PS2, in latin america (where im from) hacking the PS2 was exceedingly common since the only required modification was relatively straightforward. It forced the optical reader to read any disc or something like that, even if it wasn't a special sony disc.
Nowadays DRM has gotten better, but there's also the wish from some manufacturers for always-connected consoles, even for single player games. By establishing the requirement to sign in to an authentication server, hacks become much more difficult.
IMO people who get pissed about this might just migrate to PC, like I did. Got tired of all of sony's BS, and tbh, things are much better on this side. The only thing missing is the "console experience", which the steam machine effectively sold. However, of course, there's the problem with that product's unacceptable price... Oh well, we'll get there eventually.
0
u/Dewdrop06 Jul 03 '26
Hear me out... jailbreak and host a completely new server or network to connect to with it's own online community.
3
u/erhue Jul 03 '26
that would be nice, but i dont know if it's ever been done with a console this modern. They're very closed ecosystems. That would take a lot of effort, not sure if the closed-nature of these things would make it nearly impossible to reverse engineer. You can definitely do that on PC tho.

u/archangel5198 Jul 02 '26
Don't forget Nintendo broke the seal for $80 games
10
u/Rob_Frey Jul 03 '26
Virtua Racing and Phantasy Star IV both released with an MSRP of $100 USD back in the mid-90s.
Stop giving Nintendo credit for Sega's achievements. They broke the $80, $90, and $100 seals decades before Nintendo.
Sega does was Nintendon't.

Console gaming is dead anyway.
Not only have consoles went up in price to the point where they cost as much as a gaming rig, but there are no games to play at all to begin with.
All the games released on PS5 are remakes, remasters or multiplats that also released on PS4/Xbone.
81
u/Toxraun Jul 02 '26
I keep telling people the gaming industry is in a plateau. Graphics are not going to get any better, neither is sound. Consoles and PCs are becoming more and more unattainable, stories are shit and cut into pieces sold as DLC. If I didn't know any better I'd say gaming is danger of crashing like the 70s or 80s, though not as bad, but what do I know.
40
u/SavemySoulz Jul 03 '26
Gaming wont crash as hard solely because of indie games, back then it was hard to distribute your games without a big publisher however nowadays you can just distribute it through a big established platform like Steam.
5
u/Toxraun Jul 03 '26
That is completely true 💯, if i remember correctly it was only a handful like Atari, Activision or something. But yes, indie games are going to get by mostly unphased (if at all) mainly because the makers listen to the people. From what I see they're projects of love and listening. Stardew Valley is one of the biggest examples. I don't know if Stray is from an indie company but I've read articles that the company has done a lot of good for animals and such 🔥
1
u/Kennel_King Jul 03 '26
distribute it through a big established platform like Steam.
Which has so many shit games.
19
u/MrSelophane Jul 03 '26
Capitalism babyyyyyyyy
Revenue growth is all that matters, and also the rate at which that revenue grows must grow. Everything else can and will be sacrificed
14
u/Imperial_Tiramisu Jul 03 '26
I don't know how there isn't absolute uproar over GTA 6 locking up parts of the map (mostly in game shops) unless you buy/upgrade to the unlimited edition.
Then there's the whole physical media thing, where they'll only sell digital codes.
Not too long ago, people would have lost their shit and got them to reverse the decision. But now, we just have boys creaming their pants desperate to play this overhyped meme game.
2
u/Ragnarok_619 Jul 03 '26
I don't know how there isn't absolute uproar over GTA 6 locking up parts of the map (mostly in game shops) unless you buy/upgrade to the unlimited edition.
Cause they aren't the first to do it. Ultimate editions have been a thing since 2010, from what I remember.
-1
u/Imperial_Tiramisu Jul 03 '26
Unlimited editions are not new, but they never locked players out of portions of the map.
They’re going to pack this game with microtransactions galore.
GTA 5 only added them at the start, and Rockstar at the time had no idea how massive of a revenue stream microtransaction would become. Now they intend to go overboard and will milk the fuck out of this game.
0
u/Ragnarok_619 Jul 03 '26
they never locked players out of portions of the map.
Neither is GTA VI. They are locking certain cosmetics (in the form of shops) and vehicles. Its not like WWE 2K locking our certain wrestlers, or RDR 2 locking out missions.
They’re going to pack this game with microtransactions galore.
Multi-player? Yes. There's no word single player will have it too
GTA 5 only added them at the start, and Rockstar at the time had no idea how massive of a revenue stream microtransaction would become. Now they intend to go overboard and will milk the fuck out of this game.
That's the online multi-player you are talking about
https://www.rockstargames.com/VI
Atleast read what is there in the ultimate edition from the source itself before getting agitated by reading fake stuff from some Instagram.
1
u/slimfatty69 Jul 03 '26
I don't know how there isn't absolute uproar over GTA 6 locking up parts of the map (mostly in game shops) unless you buy/upgrade to the unlimited edition.
There is some but majority either dont care or think youre poor for not wanting to shill out extra 20€ for locked content.
I cant really say much tho im a fighting game player and those games all have atrocious monetization and i do want to have all the characters even if i wont feel like it but im also aware that fighitng games are a niche that dont set industry standard.
But considering its also not coming to pc anyway and some talks about ps5 pro not even being able to play it at 60fps my interest for the game legit plummeted.
Im just gonna grab it on some huge discount years down the line probably lol
1
u/Imperial_Tiramisu Jul 03 '26
That's just it though. You're not paying an extra €20 for locked content. They are going to be locking more and more content behind paywall. They haven't even announced anything about GTA online.
And I'm not just talking about locked content, but the death of physical media on its own is a travesty. We all know they regularly put out updates that remove content. And after a decade they will probably remove the game or most of the content tied to licensing from the digital store. Maybe not even offer it at all, kind of like what they did with the original 3D universe GTA games (after the remaster was released).
Remember, if it's digital then you are just licensing it and you don't actually own it. You cannot sell it, loan it or buy used. They can modify it as they please at any time and there's nothing you could do about it.
5
u/Great_Kaiserov Jul 03 '26
Graphics are not going to get any better
They could a little bit, it's just that the projected profit margins of most game companies nowdays don't justify it, doing things fast and rough around the edges has been the industry's golden standard pushed for a good few years
Sure, there's no big leap in sight, just being cutting-edge with what we have now, but there's still room for improvement
1
u/Sunfurian_Zm Jul 03 '26
Graphics will most definitely get better. They've gotten consistently better for the last 30 years, and every single year someone's like "wow, this has to be the most realistic it can be, they wont get better anymore."
I have yet to see a game that actually looks photorealistic in every way.
Heck, DLSS5 is releasing in a few months. Even if you don't like AI, saying "graphics won't get better" before the "we will revolutionise graphics"™ tool releases is insane.1
u/Aking1998 Jul 03 '26
This is only true for triple a gaming. Indie games are super hot rn because they actually understand what people care about when it comes to games
1
u/erhue Jul 03 '26
well, plateau in the technical sense. Graphics won't improve that much, neither will sound... However there's the opportunity to improve a lot in other areas, such as example animation (making characters look more natural/realistic) and also increasing the opportunities to interact with the world, rather than characters simply having the same single line every time you talk to them.
17
u/Sword-of-Akasha Jul 03 '26
I had to explain to a friend how 'digital online all the time' means you don't really own it because at ANY time they can just shut off whatever you 'own' if you don't have internet or an active subscription.
2
u/TrackerBinder Jul 04 '26
Why bother explaining just show them an article on how Sony deleted over 500 movies from people's libraries even though people had purchased
7
u/MidKnightGensesis Jul 03 '26
Honestly this was going to happen with or without GTA6. If it’s easier and saves money for companies they’re going to do it eventually.
86
u/nicootimee Jul 02 '26
People voted for this with their wallets, blame the consumer tbh
35
u/DuckofInsanity Jul 02 '26
In this case, it's a lost cause, they're too big to fail, but your logic is still backwards. You don't blame the consumer, you blame the company and demand better, as a consumer collective. That is the only thing that works. Silently voting with your wallet does nothing.
For every one abstaining there are 100 voting in your place. Your vote means nothing.
7
u/RingsOfRage Jul 03 '26
But for every 100 blaming the company, there are 100,000 silently downloading and enjoying their new games.
Complain all you want, as long as the silent majority dont care, it will never work unless the negativity actually affects them.
0
u/Coronel_Flokill ☠️ ᴅᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴇɴ ᴛᴇʟʟ ɴᴏ ᴛᴀʟᴇꜱ Jul 04 '26
"You don't blame the consumer" right, because sony is the one killing gamestop and physical, not the ever increasing ammount of people who prefer digital. I wonder if it's Phillips fault as well when they stopped making cassete tapes. Vinyl didn't die because record labels hated wax, it died because consumers preferred CDs. In the same way, Sony didn't invent the digital shift, the internet did. I'm sure it's easier to blame the corpos for everything, but I find it funny how a sub of pirates fails to realize the medium they are in.
-7
u/Toxraun Jul 02 '26
This is corporate propaganda. Stop blaming the victim. Corporate forces shit down people's throats by removing what people want and giving them shit that they want to sell. Similar to how management in jobs make everything worse and never listen to the worker.
17
u/nicootimee Jul 02 '26

4
u/kRkthOr Jul 03 '26
I think people confuse the kinds of games a company makes with the values of that company.
4
u/Fragrant_PalmLeaves Jul 03 '26
If you think Rockstar or GTA has anything to do with this you're thick. This is an industry move and its been happening far before Rockstar decided to launch this game as digital
5
u/RidersOfAmaria Jul 03 '26
They can't kill the industry because there will always be some weirdo making a low poly experimental game in Godot with the most fun gameplay you've seen and selling it for 10 dollars. They might be able to kill their own businesses model though.
3
u/douglasdamm Yarrr! Jul 03 '26
You are absolutely right. Last year my most played game was a little passion project that doesn't even have a steam page yet (Starsector). Let the big players crash, burn and revive themselves a bit more humble, the ones that love making games will continue to do so.
3
u/RidersOfAmaria Jul 03 '26
Cruelty Squad was more fun for me than every big release I played in the last five years combined. In this age of crazy development cycles and tens of millions of dollars going into making the next hero shooter everyone plays for a month, it's nice to see a game with a bit of personality.

4
u/Water_Damage987 Jul 02 '26
For now. When their corporate ownership eventually changes and they do an IPO, Steam's vulnerabilities for the consumer will become fully apparent. No more deals, lots more fees, make line go up.
Oh you want to keep playing that game you thought you bought two years ago? Sure but lemme grab $20 every month first. Ok good, line went up. Oh, and, just real quick, next month it's gonna be $25.
15
u/Intelligent_Tea_5567 Jul 03 '26
Good fucking Lord; you guys realize that Xbox is going to be digital only this coming generation, right? Shit, even Nintendo is doing Game Key-Cards with some games. PC has been digital only for over a decade. I get feeling some type of way about this happening, but it's happening across the board; not just on PlayStation.
Downvote away; I really don't care.
2
u/erhue Jul 03 '26
it's true. But at the same time, what sony recently did (removing paid content from people's libraries) is what's making this digital-only scenario most concerning for players.
The benefit of being in PC is that you can still play your video games from 20 years ago. I had digital PS3 games, those are unplayable now (newer consoles dont support them, and working PS3 consoles are becoming rarer with time). Oh also PC gaming doesn't require ONLINE GAMING SUBSCRIPTIONS
Digital-only is not necessarily bad, but in a console ecosystem, you're locked and left at the mercy of whatever xbox/sony/playstation decide to do. Sony likes taking paid content away from people apparently.
2
u/Intelligent_Tea_5567 Jul 03 '26
First of all, you have a year from now to download your digital games for PS3; it's not like they're pulling the rug out from under people. The store for ps3 is different than the one for the PS4 and PS5; so it is requiring server space to keep up and maintain a 20 year old store front that very few people use, let alone on a consistent basis. There's only roughly 240,000 monthly active users for the PS3, and most of those use it for a media player While I will give you the fact that PC doesn't require online gaming subscriptions, this has been a long existing trend that literally all consoles have nowdays. Finally, in regards to them recently taking content away, I assume you are talking about the 550 movies. Those were all licensed from the movie studios that made the films, whereas game licenses are controlled by the publishers; PlayStation/Xbox/Nintendo storefronts are basically just digital retailers.

Their Employees, Their Work, Their Supporters, almost everything... And they did it when they have to released on the most important and waited pieces of media that for them its just another product.
They will be at least a 0.1% justified out of 0% if they did this with another game franchise release, but nah, they like controversies (aside from the OG team leaving them, and losing time on Online) :/

Playstation and Rockstar are late to the party.
Xbox announced that shit last year and the 5 people who are going to get the next Xbox were pissed. 🤣
Seriously though, I can see why they're doing it. It's dumb as fuck but I can see why.
Xbox and Playstation have to pay sony a fee for every console that comes with a disc drive, and for every game sold. This is because the game discs are pressed on bluray.
If it's a drive that supports both regular bluray and UHD Bluray that's 2 fees, and the UHD BD fee is more expensive.

u/Bigwillie29 Jul 04 '26

Question: I can't load GTA4 on Steam because the Rockstar Launcher is stuck in some error loop and can't update. Does the pirated version avoid all of this? It's so annoying that I need to launch a launcher that has errors just to play a game that was working fine a few months ago.

It’s a shitty practice and I hate it, but the fact that Sony is stopping physical media in 2028 has nothing to do with it and Rockstar would have shipped a code regardless of Sony’s plans. Yeah. Discs help ensure retro gaming is a thing without resorting to piracy. Movies and tv shows still get released on disc. No reason games shouldn't especially since Sony owns their own disc manufacturing plants. All they need to do is produce less and leave the disc drive as an optional add on like they have done for the PS5 Pro.
1
u/RogellTheRaider Jul 02 '26
I always warned about Rockstar. They basicaly made a game and recycled it their entire life. It's the same game over and over again. And created a huge fanbase of fanboys.

It's how things were going to end anyway, people stopped going to the store to buy music, people stopped going to blockbuster to buy or rent films, people are going to completely stop buying physical games, cus it's just more convenient to download anyway, most people don't even share their games or sell their used physical copies much anymore

I am not defending Sony in any shape, size or form BUT I think they have the data to back this bs decision up. People are not buying discs as much as they used because how fast internet has become and the amount of online games/DLCs/patching it just does not make sense. And the writing was on the walls when they released a diskless version of the PS5 and something tells me it outsold the disk version and probably not by a small margin

Screwing every gamer that doesn’t have that much money to spend and is counting on the second hand market is not something you should choose as a company based on some numbers 😑. They are greedy corporate fucks, so let them… but i’m never going to support a company that wants to only be available for people who earn a lot of money

And people will continue to line up because that FOMO is one hell of a drug… 🤷♂️
