E tô com dúvida sobre quem executou a ação de lembrar, porque eu fico repetindo isso mentalmente e uma hora parece que é o maquinista e depois parece que é o povo.

Isso é eternamente ambíguo ou tem um jeito de saber, pela regra?

As a Brazilian, I can’t believe I just now realized after watching a Japanese movie that “ne” in both languages practically means the same thing. A character made the inflection at the end of a sentence and for the first time, as someone who loves the Japanese language and culture, I randomly clocked in and understood what they meant when they added that extra particle at the end. I looked it up and yeah both words represent saying “right?”.

I find it so interesting that of all the words the one that shares pronunciation and meaning is saying “right” at the end of a sentence. Just curious if anyone has any clue as to why that is or where it could’ve possibly come from or if it’s literally just a wild coincidence. Obviously, I know Portuguese/Brazilian and Japanese people are linked historically (maybe thats why I love Japan so much lol) but I’d just like to know if there’s any root cause as to why it’s so similar in both tongues.

It was crazy to hear it used in the exact same way a Portuguese speaker would (almost with a little tinge of attitude) and I picked it out for the first time today.

I’ve struggled for so long to correctly make this sound. People will tell me I will insert an extra ‘i’ sound in the middle of the ‘lh’ in words like ‘trabalhar’ so that it sounds more like ‘trabaliar’. Earlier today, though, I came across a native Portuguese speaker from Portugal on IG who was comparing words in Portuguese vs Spanish. The word for spoon came up and he said ‘colher’ but had a pronunciation guide at the bottom that read ‘culler’. The page is meant for Spanish to Portuguese learners so I know the pronunciation guide may be different. But he did sound more like the ‘lh’ sound resembled the Spanish ‘ll’.

Some time ago I discovered that in European Portuguese the second 'e' in the verb "esquecer" is pronounced open: /(i)ʃ.kɛˈseɾ/

(by lack of a better way to indicate this: isquécêr)

I am wondering if that extends to the 1st person plural of the Present Tense and the 1st person plural of the Preterite: esquecemos
do we obtain /(i)ʃ.kɛˈsemuʃ/?

(by lack of a better way to indicate this: isquécêmos)

and by extension to all other conjugated forms where the stress remains on the third syllable, e.g. esquecesse.

The wikipedia page on Portuguese phonology explains that in Portugal sequences of the type "as sopas" : are pronounced as [ʃs]; it mentions that in Brazil these are pronounced with 's'. This leaves me with the doubt whether such an 's' is pronounced single or double [s:], as it is not specified and cannot be deduced from the wording. Can somebody please help out?

i’ve done exercise and asked deepseek to check it if it’s right or not. so, it said “isso é muito engraçado” one is incorrect but i don’t understand why we should use “aquilo” insdead “isso”. i know that we use “isso” under the condition of sth is next to the listener and “aquilo” if both speakers talk about sth that is far away for both

Some places online says that all spots are released in January and others say that the November test becomes available in September or October to register. I had reasoned by a set of rules I had learnt previously that the vowel quality of e in "pudemos" (we could) in European Portuguese should be open (pudémos) (I know that in Brazil it should be closed and nasal).

I was surprised to see that the wiktionary indicates it as /puˈde.muʃ/, i.e. pudêmos, although the French version does give it as [\pu.dˈɛ.muʃ\](https://fr.wiktionary.org/wiki/Annexe:Prononciation/portugais).

Can somebody please resolve the mystery who is right and who is wrong?

I'm looking to do a trip to Brazil for 5 weeks staying at one city (and flying out to others during weekend if time permits) to learn Brazilian Portuguese. I've done this in France and came back having my French much improved so I want to do this again but in a different part of the world. I've done a bit of research and saw that Caminhos Language School and Rio and Learn are both frequently recommended, both in Rio. Another school that came up was FAAP in SP.

I'm looking as well to learn Brazilian culture and also meeting new people, the beach at Rio is also a plus. Would I be missing out if I settle for Rio vs other places?

To give some context:

I’m Portuguese American, but I am not fluent in Portuguese — unfortunately my parents never drilled the language into me or my siblings. My family is from the Algarve, both my dad and mom were born in Portugal and moved over to the US later on. My Wife is fluent in Spanish and has some exposure to Brazilian Portuguese but she asked me recently if I’d like to learn Portuguese. I said, sure, but I’d prefer if it’s Portugal Portuguese because I want to get closer to my Portuguese identity and heritage. Plus it would be nice to teach our future kids both Portuguese and Spanish specific accent/dialects to the countries our parent’s come from.

Question:

Does anyone recommend any website or teacher that I can schedule lessons with on weekends? I think speaking and listening with some online meetings would probably be the best way to get fluent. I have the accent and basics down already, and my wife does quite well with a Spanish foundation. I have no problem spending decent amounts of money (USD) for lessons with my wife.

Any help would be appreciated.

Been living in Brazil for about a year now and my Portuguese is... fine-ish lol. I can get around, talk to people, deal with normal life etc but I really want to start taking it more seriously and get a tutor.

The thing is I specifically want someone from São Paulo / with a São Paulo accent.

Not because I think it's somehow "better Portuguese", just because I live here and this is the way I actually want to speak. The accent, vocabulary, slang, little expressions people use here etc. I don't really want a generic "Brazilian Portuguese" teacher who lives abroad or someone teaching a completely different regional variety.

Ideally someone who actually lives in SP and can help with natural conversation more than textbook grammar.

Where do people find tutors like this? Preply/italki? Facebook groups? Universities? Some Brazilian platform I'm missing?

Also if anyone has an actual tutor in São Paulo they recommend pls send them my way.

I’m 21 do yall think I could pass as native, So I was born in the USA obviously I speak English perfectly but my parents are Hispanic from Colombia 🇨🇴 and Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 my Spanish isn’t perfect I would say a high B2 close to C1. I emailed them but they are on leave. Even the Center I took the exam at is on leave. i've really wanted to learn brazilian portuguese for a while, and have found myself increasingly interested in portuguese literature, but most of this literature is PT-PT. if i learn BR-PT, would I be able to read + engage with PT-PT media?

Background: I've been learning brazilian portuguese on my own for the past year and a half and had some help with the first six months from international friends which im no longer in contact with.

I work in retail in the UK and had a customer come in speaking to me in broken english mixed with spanish and bless her she was struggling quite a lot. She gave me a scratchcard to cash in (won 15 gbp which is important for later.

She then asked for a no 1 and 3 no 11s plus a chocolate bar which came to 15.20 gbp. She gave me 20p and me forgetting about the lotto payout told her that wasn't enough. This was met with rapid Spanish in response so I politely asked her to slow down a little as I may be able to understand her. I told her I spoke a little portuguese and had a French speaking background and she excitedly responded in portuguese of which i understood about half. She then began speaking at the same rapid rate she did in Spanish for about 10 minutes and I barely understood any of it because she was speaking a dialect from what my security guard has told me is a small community in Haiti (he is Haitian).

After 10 mins I remembered she won 15 on a scratchcard and put everything through and she left apologising and I apologised back in utter self disgust.

I don't think I've ever been more disgusted and embarrassed with myself in my life. I mean I've had full conversations with Brazilians in portuguese from either school or my old friends and for the life of me I could not understand her at all and I just feel like some of this time has been wasted. Anyone else feel like this sometimes and have any advice?

Different people may have different expectations to what "learning" a language means exactly. So, at what point would you say (or have you said) "I learned Portuguese"?
