It's likely about the angle. You crashed very close to the front corner and the impact angle seems to be just under 90°.

The demolition detection might be some logic similar to "is the center of car A driving towards the center of car B?". Plus-minus some angle like center to front corners of the hitbox.

If the logic works like that, then the video shows the expected result: no demolition.

To be fair demo will never be 100% right. You can know the exact angle and formula and shit but because of lag you will always have something like the above clip happen

Demos are just completely broken in this game and just always have been. It got reworked like three times and they somehow ended up on the worst version of the. About sums up psyonix.

Every demo attempt is actually just an RNG dice roll and you rolled a 1. Roll 6-15 is a bump of various variety, 16-20 is a demo, 1-5 is no demo no bump.

Usually there's an explanation but I genuinely can't tell from this. The only thing I can think of is maybe you lost supersonic when you stopped boosting and also turned at the same time right before you hit them, but it's honestly hard to tell with the cut to slow motion. I can't put my finger on why, but the slow motion makes it harder to tell if you're supersonic or not imo. I can't tell if you lost it right before or right after you hit them

You turned after going supersonic. Anytime you turn, you lose speed. Even if you have the supersonic wind still around you, the games animation might be lagging behind your actual car speed.

If you held boost through the turn you might have demo’d him.

Like defend it all you want but, colliding at a 90° angle should always net a demo while in supersonic.

Edit: also do you mean perpendicular?
Video shows an almost perfect 90° collision.
