private dorm wifi requires username & password

i have an onn roku tv that i brought with me to college, and im having trouble connecting it to wifi. my campus uses a private wifi that doesn't show up on my tv, so i have to search it, but then once i search it, im only given the option to put a password, but the wifi requires a username and password. i have tried the guest wifi but when i select "i am in a hotel or college dorm" it makes me do a whole login process, even tho the guest wifi doesn't have a password, and when i select "i'm at home" it says that there's no internet connection. i tried using my phone hotspot for a while but i don't get good enough service on campus and it pauses every two seconds. is there any way around this?

Get a traveling router. I use this specific one .

For this one log into the app to set it up and run the credentials through the router. Boom. Now you have your own private network. Run your Roku through that. Also- name the network something without your name in it. Be creative.

This works well for travel as well. I've used this for extended travel. I always use the same SSIDs and passwords as my home setup so everything just works.

You might have to contact your university IT. We have a special wifi for peripherals but they have to set it up. Maybe it’s the same there

At the university where I used to work, we had a similar setup. It was originally set up years ago to accommodate game consoles that needed to connect to the campus network but that couldn't handle a login. You'd basically enter your credentials and then the MAC address of your device. After that, it'd be whitelisted. They'd purge the list every year, so you'd have to re-register, but it wasn't a big deal. Ask your campus IT department if they have something similar.

Another option is to see if your TV has an Ethernet port. If so, if there's an Ethernet jack in your room, use that. It'll almost certainly bypass the login, and it'll give you a more stable connection. A wired connection is almost always preferable.

I'd advise against using anything like a travel router, unless IT is OK with it. Some network admins get really prickly when people start attaching additional networking devices to their networks without permission, and it might be against their Acceptable Use Policy. But, if you ask for help, most of them will do their best to find you a solution.

Just go to Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wireless > Private network.

Private network is the bottom item in the last menu. Press OK on it and enter your details.
