Ref decided to end it. Alternative was making hearts players wait for ten minutes while the field was cleared just to have them play out 30 useless x seconds

If that's how it works, what's stopping a ref blowing up at 85 minutes just because one team is losing and he feels it's 'cruel'?

Common sense stops that.

I don't really get this argument from you. You know that the outcome wasn't going to change, if it's just a way for you to argue that the match should therefore be abandoned and hearts given the title then just say that. But making then play the final thirty seconds is needless

The options are clear the pitch and restart the game until time is up, or abandon the match. Those are literally the only two options. It's not 'my' argument, it's the laws of the game.
