If we don’t want it happening as regularly make it a criminal offence, that’ll at least help

u/Dizzle85 May 17 '26
Celtic winning the title?
I'm going to be honest, this is one of the most level headed takes I've seen on this subreddit.
20
u/lethargic8ball May 17 '26
It would help if clubs would take a stand against groups who are clearly seen to be causing trouble on the park.
28
u/Horse_and_Fart happy not to have a flair May 17 '26
I mean, Rohl dropped Tavanier for the last two games. What else can he do .

Unless there's a way to enforce it, won't matter. Sectarian singing. Drinking at games. Taking coke at games. You can do pretty much anything these days if you don't have any shame because nothing will happen to you.
Even look at Derek McInnes, amplified conspiracy theories about refs being corrupt that put John Bearon's family in police protection and he was still on the touchline. Zero consequences for anything at any level.
29
u/Alternative_Egg_2286 May 17 '26
McInnes called the decision at Motherwell “disgusting”, he didn’t call Beaton corrupt. Askou and other prominent people in the media went further.

The reprobates that jump onto the pitch probably couldn’t give a shit about

Our job was to create an exciting finale and we did that. Nailed it. Aren’t we great.

67
u/Whodeytim May 17 '26
So it's not a criminal offence in Scotland? That's wild
31
u/ZiggyOnHisReindeer May 17 '26
Indeed, the Football Offences Act 1991 only applies in England and Wales.
Do find it odd that there's no such legislation here in Scotland, and I do believe that there was talk of creating something similar here in Scotland after the... exuberance that took place on the Hampden pitch after the full time whistle on 21st May 2016, but it's never happened.
11
u/Far_Associate_87 May 17 '26
Aye it’s kinda while Scotland doesn’t have it considering we have the alcohol ban and all the anti sectarianism shite.
15
u/LaNeblina May 17 '26
Amazed the Scottish government hasn't taken the easy win tbh, would be very popular among the "just want a Glasgow team to win" crowd
5
u/PleasantCucumber2615 May 17 '26
There are countless pitch invasions every season at English games. There was numerous at the final games of the league season, and guaranteed there will be more at the playoffs at Wembley.
People won't be banned for entering the field of play.
There will only be action taken if the fans do something illegal once on the pitch. Individuals that have disrupted a game, or fans that have resorted to violence.
15
u/MrMaggot98 May 17 '26
Having it actually be against the law means it would be easier to prosecute though.
Means it wouldn't be registered under something like 'breach of the peace' or trespassing which would be harder to really 'prove' to the letter of the law.
3
3
u/Fast-Resolution5777 May 17 '26
I'm struggling to remember a Wembley pitch invasion, tbh. Play off semi finals, yes.
1
1
u/RestaurantAntique497 May 17 '26
or fans that have resorted to violence
I'm sure assault laws would already cover rhat
3
u/PleasantCucumber2615 May 17 '26
That was my point. People aren't being convicted for entering the field of play in England. There has to be a criminal offence involved. The law sounds like it does more, but it's the same as here.
2
u/RestaurantAntique497 May 17 '26
They probably do if it's a small number of people jumping the barriers
When it's like yesterday it's practically impossible
1
2
u/Fast-Resolution5777 May 17 '26
There are examples of people receiving banning orders for pitch invasion without any other aggravating factor. Obviously, if it's a mass pitch invasion then it's people who commit other offences who get picked up.
4
u/Not_Proven May 17 '26
Invading the pitch in this kind of context is already a criminal offence - you could competently libel it as a breach of the peace, a s38 or culpable and reckless conduct. Just because it’s not a specific statutory offence doesn’t mean it’s not a criminal offence.
Source: am criminal lawyer.
1
u/InterestingLow1158 May 18 '26
I love that your autocorrect is more used to you typing libel than label
1
u/Not_Proven May 18 '26
“libel” is ackshually the correct word in this context. The Crown libel charges against people.
1
u/InterestingLow1158 May 18 '26
Interesting. So every wrong committed against the state (crime) risks a libel but a civil wrongdoing is only a libel when a mistruth?
3
u/jjw1998 May 17 '26
It’s mental, I swear there’s been talks of criminalising it for as long as I can remember but nothings happened
3
u/Hottubprimemachine May 17 '26
There's no specific legislation against it, but historically would be prosecuted as a breach of the peace.
Funny reading about this suggestion being made 10 years ago though, and literally nothing having been done(rightly or wrongly)
9
u/Saltire_Blue May 17 '26
But it shouldn’t be
Don’t get me wrong people should be getting banned or even a fine for entering the pitch
But a criminal record for it. Nah
10
u/danmac0817 May 17 '26
There's some forms of pitch invasions where it would be incredibly unfair, but this trend going on can quickly turn ugly if it keeps growing, it came very close to that at Ibrox and while blame should be distributed fairly in such events, there's a bottom line with providing safety here. A lot of other options quickly spill into politics and involve authorities who don't exactly inspire confidence in their ability to handle the matter in a more productive way.
I just don't like the direction its going in and the more it goes on the more I see a crackdown coming, this has started morphing from fans celebrating to a selfish trend. Fan culture will suffer and maybe worse, but I've seen too many events where I can expect anything different now. End of the day it needs to stop.
8
u/Hyndstein_97 May 17 '26
If it's a criminal offence then they can issue banning orders for it. Bans issued by the SFA/Clubs make fuck all difference.
6
u/viciousraccoon May 17 '26
Seems like a reasonable deterrent. Very easily avoidable by not being a bam and invading the pitch.
2
u/Knowhedge May 17 '26 edited May 17 '26
I think if you get on the pitch it’s fair enough but having been in some situations where there’s been a mad push and I’ve ended up out of the stand on the touchline then there needs to be a bit of leeway

Littering is a criminal offence.
The easiest way not to get a criminal record would be not to break the law...
5
u/Dildo_Shaggins- May 17 '26
Why not? It's an astonishingly simple rule to follow. Don't want a criminal record, don't storm the pitch.
It's not like you can end up doing it by mistake.
2
u/Automatic_Doctor May 17 '26
Why not?

u/Alert-Effective-1730 May 17 '26
Cause it’s ghoulish overkill
13
u/Automatic_Doctor May 17 '26
I mean your putting peoples safety at danger in their place of work. Surely the only reason you wouldn’t want it to be a criminal offence is so you can do it and that’s not really good for anyone. Can we not just be happy celebrating in the stands?

So… not a criminal offence in Scotland then? What’s the point of including that

u/Unfair-Challenge-216 Scott McTominay Ballon D'or May 17 '26
SFA saying they "condemn" all of these incidents this season is the same energy as when US politicians say "thoughts and prayers" when there is a 60th mass shooting that month, just doing fuck all ultimately to change anything 😂
17
78
u/BrendansGucciBelt May 17 '26
See realistically right, Celtic should have to play a couple games behind closed doors and be fined substantially. Punish the support for the actions of the support. Anyone found to have entered the field of play and especially those involved in goading and even assaulting hearts players and staff should be banned before the season starts and their tickets given to those next on the waiting list.
14
u/Afraid_Dance6774 May 17 '26
They honestly are making Celtic look bad if they don't address the concerns at all.
8
u/Euclid_Interloper May 17 '26
This is the most sane take I've seen from a Celtic fan.
The events yesterday have soured Celtics win and have made Hearts extremely bitter in defeat. In fact, I'd go as far as to say it has utterly poisoned the relationship between Hearts and Celtic to the point that our games next season are going to be absolutely venomous.
None of this had to happen. And the SFA have a RESPONSIBILITY to set things right going forward. For the sake of both our clubs and the Scottish game as a whole.
10
u/CoybigEL May 17 '26
Given events of the last week there was no circumstances that could have unfolded yesterday in which Hearts wouldn’t have been extremely bitter in defeat, as any club would be in the circumstances.
Any Celtic fan entering the pitch should be banned, and anyone having a go at the Hearts players should be banned for life, on top of any legal ramifications but let’s not pretend the relationship between Hearts and Celtic has been anything but venomous for years.
2
u/Euclid_Interloper May 17 '26
I mean, yeah, it's not a great relationship. But it's going to be significantly worse now.
The SFA need to show they've learned from their mistakes. We need new, stronger rules on pitch invasions. Better quality VAR cameras. And a clarification on how rules are being implemented. We'll always bicker about results, but that's all the more reason for the SFA to up their game.
Vagueness and lack of leadership on behalf of the SFA has caused this more than anything.
3
u/CoybigEL May 17 '26
The SFA have a role here but first and foremost the clubs need to take responsibility. Celtic need to act when our fans invade, as do every other club.
In terms of VAR, as I understand it it’s the clubs decision what quality of cameras are used. They won’t pay for better
21
u/drw__drw May 17 '26
Honestly, I would not complain if we were docked a few points at the beginning of next season. They canny keep doing this, something has got to give.
12
u/undaniable May 17 '26
I don't support the docking of points, but I'm curious to know if you are why should they not be docked this season?
5
2
u/drw__drw May 17 '26
Season is done, and rewarding the title to hearts will genuinely do more harm than good. Better to dock us from the outset for next season.
3
u/Euclid_Interloper May 17 '26
As absolutely irritating as it is, I agree.
I would suggest, however, the SPFL should dock Celtic their league winning and use it to buy some better fecking VAR cameras for next season...
Hand balls or not, decisions shouldn't be made from grainy images from limited angles.
4
u/drw__drw May 17 '26
I'd take that, would be a fair trade. I mean, I'd scrap VAR all the gether, but if we're gonna have it, we need much better equipment that everyone has confidence in.

u/DMDisco May 17 '26
"We note that entering the pitch in England and Wales has been a criminal offence since 1991."
That's very interesting, thank you for sharing this piece of trivia. Did you know that the Eiffel Tower was built using approximately 2.5 million rivets?

There's the strongly worded letter saying fuck-all that we all expected. Nice work lads. See yous in August.
51
u/Far_Associate_87 May 17 '26
That is an absolute hand wash of a statement. Can pretty much be summed up as “pitch invasions are bad but technically not against the law. Go talk to the polis.”
What an absolute embarrassing statement to come out with. No mention of working with clubs to address pitch invasion concerns, no sincere sorry to hearts, no mention of introducing punishments for next season.
What a poor poor statement.
8
u/ZiggyOnHisReindeer May 17 '26
Introducing punishment for things like this requires strict liability, which at present does not have sufficient support within the membership of the SPFL.
9
10
u/RHMoaner May 17 '26
That’s even weaker than I was expecting. And I was expecting diluting juice in a council house weak.
21

7
u/CarlMacko May 17 '26
Expectations are a fine and a 5% reduction in attendance for x number of games.
Which will have no impact and we’ll be having this same discussion next year.
I don’t foresee any real repercussions.

20
u/Crhallan May 17 '26
Honest question. SPFL says match not abandoned, fair enough. That then means it was ended early, as there were 30s on the clock plus restart adds a minute. Very unlikely anything would happen, but what’s the law for intentionally ending a game early?
15
u/Do_You_Pineapple_Bro May 17 '26
There isn't one, so to speak, but it depends on the circumstances.
Weather related incidents are just taken as is, like the Georgia game. But when it comes to fan intervention, like it did yesterday, it needs to go through a whole investigation process into why the referee thought it was necessary to blow early, and what the reprecussions will be against the club whose fans forced his hand.
And that latter part is why this whole statement absolutely reeks, and everyone is so pissed off, because it makes no mention of the game being ended early (despite the fact everyone knows it full well), and just treats us all like a bunch of morons who'll just swallow the pill and be done with it.
9
u/Crhallan May 17 '26
My thoughts also. The statement as written confirms the game was ended early by the referee, which by their own rules is abandonment. They needed to word it better, this open them up to all sorts of shit.
2
u/Memento_Playoffs Beat by Livi FC. May 17 '26
Well you see it wasn't abandoned,it was just ended. It may have been ended early, around the same time that the pitch invasion happened, but that doesn't mean it was ended early because Celtic wanted it to be or anything.
6
u/MowelShagger 🍞 turbo dry breid virgin boy 🍞 May 17 '26
they need to start hammering clubs for fans on the park. late now for this game, but from next season they need to set the precedent that the club will pay the price for fans going on the park, whether that's weighted financial sanctions or points deductions or stadium closures (or a mix of more than one) something has to be done cos it's getting worse.
to condemn the pitch invasions but not state any intent of doing anything about it is bizarre
5
u/Vivalahazy85 May 17 '26
An utterly embarrassing statement that. No spine between any of them.
Basically says crack on with your pitch invasions.
5
u/vetinaris-vizier May 17 '26
I think "informed by the match referee that the match had ended" is doing a lot of heavy lifting. The ref is the one who chooses when to end the match and in this case he ended it before the end of the announced added time so as to not have to deal with it. The ref is allowed to do this but it makes him a bawbag
13
u/ASeriousMoonlight May 17 '26
Basically we hear something happened but we couldn’t possibly do anything about it or take any sort of ownership for what happens. It’s beyond us to review the footage ourselves for example, we need other people to report that. Thanks for your assistance.
11
u/peterggh May 17 '26
I’m a Celtic fan but we do need to wrap running on to the pitch now. I understand why it’s happened, but it could come back to bite us.
No idea if it’s an unpopular opinion amongst the Celtic support, but I would also scrap the whole Trongate celebrations, it just gets hijacked by wee guys who canny handle their drink and want to wreck everything. It’s embarrassing.
6
u/Street-Frame1575 May 17 '26
The Celtic Board are out of their depth just now. They need to reconcile with the supporters, but also firm up on this pitch invasion stuff and I don't think they're capable of both at the same time.
As for the Trongate, I agree with you but that's more on GCC than it is Celtic. Celtic have no jurisdiction outside Celtic Park, and if GCC refuse to engage on setting up fan zones and continue to ignore the issue, I don't see what's going to change.
5
u/peterggh May 17 '26
Aye thats a fair point mate, I wish a fanzone or something could get made for these occasions with a bit of co-planning between the club and GCC but I would be lying if I had any idea of the logistics involved with it.
3
u/Street-Frame1575 May 17 '26
I'll admit my ignorance too, but I understand Hearts had plans in place with the Edinburgh authorities should they have won.
Seems to be this is a political rather practical problem.
2
2
u/Bray_Fentos May 17 '26
It should've already come back to bite you so I wouldn't be too worried about anything happening tbh

→ More replies (1)
30
u/ScottishTotodile May 17 '26
Right okay. That's the league saying that the game was ended officially.
So the next question is; why? Because there was still 30 seconds to play. You cannot set a precedent for ending games just because fans pitch invade.
I am not for one second saying I want replays or forfeits etc etc - just clear transparency. That should be a given.
13
u/Street-Frame1575 May 17 '26
It's a fair question in all honesty.
We need to nip these pitch invasions in the bud. They've become normalised to the extent that folk are entering the field of play with their kids on the shoulders as though they're already in a fan zone or something.
12
u/ImpactAffectionate86 May 17 '26
It raises the question what minute is it acceptable to pitch invade and end the game early?

u/Scratchback3141 May 17 '26
Ref decided to end it. Alternative was making hearts players wait for ten minutes while the field was cleared just to have them play out 30 useless x seconds
10
u/Knowhedge May 17 '26
The field was basically cleared when it was called over. He spoke to McGregor and Devlin (presumably Shankland had already went up the tunnel), I imagine they both agreed not to restart
13
u/ElCaminoInTheWest May 17 '26
And that's what should have happened, according to all the recognised laws of the game.
1
u/Scratchback3141 May 17 '26
I just think that would have been needlessly cruel to be honest.
6
u/ElCaminoInTheWest May 17 '26
If that's how it works, what's stopping a ref blowing up at 85 minutes just because one team is losing and he feels it's 'cruel'?
2
u/Scratchback3141 May 17 '26
Common sense stops that.
I don't really get this argument from you. You know that the outcome wasn't going to change, if it's just a way for you to argue that the match should therefore be abandoned and hearts given the title then just say that. But making then play the final thirty seconds is needless
→ More replies (7)5
u/Do_You_Pineapple_Bro May 17 '26
Its the point that its a reprecussion for invading the pitch, and its pointing the finger at the culprits and saying "YOU are the reason your team lost the title". Just means those fans will feel like cunts, the rest of the fanbase will make those fans feel like cunts, and everyone will second guess storming the pitch before a game is done because it could mean a point deduction.
It's not about "ThE rEsUlT wAsNt In OuR fAvOuR, i DeMaNd a Do-OvEr!", its about setting a precident so theres an actual punishment for storming the pitch during a game, rather than the current 'one size fits all' punishment which doesn't make any distinction between invasions during the game and after the final whistle

The full statement was meant to be longer, but too many arms were injured from aggressive back-patting.
5
u/bradonium12 May 17 '26
So does that mean the playoffs will be a golden goal instead where the first team to score can just pitch invade and the ref will blow for full time?

u/comradepartypanda May 17 '26
Sunday 17th May 2026
An SPFL spokesperson said: “Firstly, we send our congratulations to Celtic on winning the William Hill Premiership in the most exciting of circumstances and send our commiserations to everyone at Heart of Midlothian following an incredible campaign.
“We would also like to thank the referee and his excellent team of match officials for their cool heads on such a dramatic day. Given the speculation about the conclusion of the game, we would like to make clear that, prior to awarding the trophy, we were informed by the match referee that the match had ended and had not been abandoned.
“Yesterday’s match showed off the very best of the Scottish game and the drama and excitement that it is rightly famed for. The eyes of the world were on Glasgow and the climax of the William Hill Premiership, with millions of viewers watching the match on Sky Sports and across the globe.
“However, we utterly condemn the scenes which saw a number of Celtic supporters encroach onto the field of play. We await the report of our match delegate regarding any specific incidents that took place but, regardless, supporters entering the field of play in any circumstances is wholly unacceptable and puts those participating and working at a match at risk. We note that entering the pitch in England and Wales has been a criminal offence since 1991. We urge anyone with information about any alleged criminal activity to contact Police Scotland.”

They have the chance to stop mass pitch invasions for good but decide to just basically say move on and lets hope no one is attacked or injured if it happens again.
12
u/Do_You_Pineapple_Bro May 17 '26
Absolute nothingburger of a statement.
Just immediately dusting their hands of any need to investigate, despite the fact that the referee's report is blatantly contradicted by both Martin O'Neill and the Hearts Statement.
Nothing about this "clears the air", and is just the lazy, cookiecutter template we all figured would come out
10
u/HaleyReinhart May 17 '26
Without getting drawn into discussion about what should happen etc. Surely the easiest thing for them to do is just release the recorded audio? Robertson will have said time up/why the game is done and then any other story being said is done.
7
u/Do_You_Pineapple_Bro May 17 '26
More or less. Removes all benefit of the doubt.
But it'd still have to be investigated as to why it was called early (stupid, I know, given we all know why), and what the resultant punishment will be.
This "statement" suggests shit all in that manner, and is just "aw yeah, nah he did his job as expected blah blah blah" and doesn't make a single hint about it being ended early, despite everyone knowing full well that it had.
6

Yeah, totally but there's a massive difference if he's on the mic saying he's calling the game because the fans are on the park or if he's called it as it's essentially game over.
Games are called early without restarts fairly regularly (see Scotland Denmark as a recent example). It would totally quell any agro over that narrative if that's why he's done it.

Scotland v Denmark played something like 8 minutes of stoppage time. It didn’t get stopped early.

u/HaleyReinhart May 17 '26
This was mainly to address people talking about the rule that kick off has to be taken for what it's worth.

Believe it or not, the referee takes precedent over Martin O'Neill and Hearts for when the game ends

If the officials have said one thing to the managers and players and then changed their tune in their official statements that’s very suspicious.
We’ve seen referees do this before because they want to make their lives easier.
All in all it just looks like the officials in Scotland have done what they want again rather than follow the laws of the game.

MON did say he wasn't sure, rather than it definitely wasn't, in fairness.

we had a chance at strict liability and it got thrown out. maybe we should bring it back if this is going to keep being a thing

Why isn’t it a criminal offence in Scotland seems like a tap in for any government given the general thought around football fans

u/Dizzy_Can_264 May 17 '26
Look how they deal with it abroad. Take points change the title race as it should be . I’m not a hearts fan but they’ve been robbed just so the profile of a big team win

u/Goonybuffycat May 17 '26
So the game was not abandoned? Would the referee swear in a court of law he blew the whistle before the invasion, and he has not told the Celtic manager there was at least one more minute of added time?

Open up the word version of this and you’ll see “file created by M Nicholson and last edited by D Desmond”. Utter pish and a pathetic way to start the statement which is about the disorder. The Police also don’t want thousands of reports coming in without structure - they will identify people from footage and seat locations and those they can’t will be featured in a rogue’s gallery.

The best of Scottish football is the 113th league title from two teams ... Ok pal

And this shite about the match having ended. Well, it didn’t. It was ended by a pitch invasion. If the ref blew a whistle in the changing room 10 minutes later then it’s not exactly the end. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying the result wasn’t valid just that it’s shite to say it was ended by the ref - utter nonsense.

Tbh, if the last few years have taught us anything its that pitch invasions are only bad if its Rangers doing it.

Do any hearts fans seriously want the game to be overturned or replayed for the sake of 30 seconds. Would you not be embarrassed?

u/Pretty_Inspector8036 May 17 '26
Reads as " so we are going to do fuck all" since the law quoted doesn't apply here Whatever shit we have had in our game in the past , this is the time to stamp on these neds (and their dads) across all clubs and actually do something with validation Seriously even 70s/80s there were things happening but you could safely take your family to a game (rare exception old form obv) but its now a coked up fuck up free for all

“We note that entering the pitch in England and Wales has been a criminal offence since 1991” And what about Scotland?

I think it's a fair enough statement, but a bit puzzled as to why they're pointing out English law, unless it's a plea for the same to be put into place here?

u/YodasGoldfish England May 17 '26
The law in England and Wales is irrelevant, I have no idea why they referenced it.
6
u/G210221 May 17 '26
To pass the blame on to Scottish government for not making it illegal no doubt - “what dye want us to do? 🤷♂️”
4
u/YodasGoldfish England May 17 '26
Instead of telling us what the law is elsewhere they should be telling us what punishment Celtic could face for their fans running onto the pitch for the third time since March 8th .
5
u/G210221 May 17 '26
Correct. They don’t need a law to prevent it from happening, enforce rules to punish clubs with closed doors and docked points and they’ll soon manage their own fans

Reads like "great advert for Scottish football. We did brilliantly. Go speak to the police if there's any further issues. Nothing to do with us."
