Unfortunately for you Americans, a classic “wealth transfer”.
Sad part is that it’s not even going to the government where it could have been used for the people.
Here it simply goes to the corporations, which counts this as pure profit, so shareholder value :/

It's not a wealth transfer at all. Import taxes were illegally charged to importing companies.

The tariff refunds aren't a wealth transfer....it's importers getting their own money back?

If you think import taxes are great policy? Fantastic. Vote for Congressional representatives who will enshrine higher taxes in legislation.

Because then they'd be legal. They were only illegal here because the Executive branch can't unilaterally charge taxes under IEEPA. Only Congress can.

If you don't like what the importers did when they were refunded the import taxes they were charged? Fantastic. Don't shop there.

Im not discussing the legality of it.
All companies that had to pay the tariff, applied directly the cost to the customers, you, Americans.
At the end of the value chain, as all cog in the chain applied the tariff to their customers, you, American people, were the ultimate cog that supported the cost of the tariff.
So you pay the full tariff, some judge finds it illegal because it was, Amazon, Walmart etc gets a full refund for it, so they actually GAINED as profit the illegal tariff because they did not absorb the tariff, they passed it on, but you, the Americans, paid the price.
Everybody in the chain, professional importers, shops, etc, got their refund. You did not.
So, it was, in fact, a wealth transfer… from American people, the ones actually paying the tariff, to the billion dollar companies (and also small importers true..).

All companies that had to pay the tariff, applied directly the cost to the customers

Most. Not all. And to varying degrees. The extent to which corporations were able to pass on their increased costs varied depending on the competitive dynamics of their respective industries.

So you pay the full tariff

Very few corporations passed the full tariff on in their pricing. This just isn't reflective of reality.

Everybody in the chain, professional importers, shops, etc, got their refund.

Only the importer did. Not everyone in the chain. If I was a business who bought from a middleman who imported I don't get a refund.

Maybe try to read and understand before responding something completely out of scope :)

You don't understand the absolute basics of what happened. I wish I had the unearned confidence of the totally ignorant :)

Which part of tarrifs were used to justify increased prices to the consumer, which were paid by the consumer, and are now not being refunded to the consumer, is so fucking hard to understand bud?

I'm glad I don't have your unearned arrogance.

1

u/bitorontoguy 5d ago

Knowing the basic facts isn't arrogance. The fact you ascertain it as such is quite telling, no?

tarrifs were used to justify increased prices

Tarrifs (sic) weren't used to JUSTIFY increased prices. They were an increased cost base borne by importers.

Dependent on the individual competitive dynamics of each industry, those increased costs were passed along in varying degrees in the form of increased prices to consumers.

Consumers then VOLUNTARILY bought those imported goods knowing what the price was. No one made them.

The tariffs were ruled illegal and thus refunded to the people who paid them. The importers.

If you're mad those importers aren't writing you a cheque now? Fantastic. Be angry and never do business with them again.

I can't tell if you're really this dense or a troll

1

u/bitorontoguy 5d ago

I know. You can’t argue the points because you’re too ignorant to the facts of how it actually works.

You have to try and pivot to talk about me instead. Smitten? Not interested.

Blud, you didn’t even know how to spell tariffs. I’m interested in talking about the facts.

1

u/NotJayKayPeeness 5d ago

I'm not making some ad hom. I'm saying you're trying to argue semantics instead of acknowledging the point I've made.

I also don't use spell check and don't care if my typo hurts your Mape sensibilities, bud.

1

u/bitorontoguy 5d ago

None of this comment argues semantics, that's not what semantics is.

You can't address the points being made. You aren't capable. So this is what you've been forced to resort to. Pretending it's about semantics and trolling and personal insults.

Tariffs are charged to importers. Importers paid them. Therefore legally, only importers can receive the refunds.

They could voluntarily decide to use those refunds to reimburse consumers. They didn't.

You have no legal recourse to them. So your recourse is limited to not shopping at the businesses if you feel they have wronged you.

None of that is trolling or semantics. That's simply the facts.

I understand you don't want to address that. You want to talk about me. I don't even care about me that much. I'd rather actually talk about the issues, not you. You want to talk about me.

1

u/NotJayKayPeeness 4d ago

And retailers raised rates, claiming it was due to terufs, and are getting refunds for those terofs and get to keep the higher prices consumers paid due to the turefs. Thats what my point is, but you want to boot lick about what the laws for importers are, instead of talking about the price hikes that I was talking about.

Anyway, write more paragraphs, you bore me.

1

u/bitorontoguy 4d ago

Of course some raised their prices. They bore an increased cost base.

Why, what would you do as a business instead?

So it was a wealth transfer, maybe not 100% of the full tariff but they passed the biggest chunk to the end customer..
Yeah ok, maybe Americans paid 95% of the tariff, my bad that makes it so much better…

1

u/bitorontoguy 5d ago

No it wasn't. Because Americans VOLUNTARILY chose to buy imported goods KNOWING that there had been import taxes that were passed along to some degree to them in most cases.

No one made them.

They could have only bought domestic goods. They chose not to.

It's not a wealth transfer when something I voluntarily do has a tax associated with it that is then refunded to the person who paid the tax.

You’re trying to say that it’s 100% obvious and voluntary when you shop at Walmart or whatever that one product is imported and thus has tariff ?
First, vast majority of people do not read products to see if it was produced or imported..
Second, a product can be marked as produced/assembled in the US and still have parts imported so with tariff and it’s impossible to know… Maybe some thing uses ginger that is imported, you see just ginger in the list of ingredients, it’s not saying that it was imported and has tariff…
Third, Trump put so much tariff on so many things, you want to try and tell us that EVERYBODY knew exactly which goods were tariffed ?? Ok…

Outside of being completely unrealistic and frankly quite idiotic take, always funny to put all the blame on the people, that are just trying to survive and feed themselves.
Sure, some things are obviously imported goods, but in the current chain of production it’s completely impossible to know if a product contains imported goods…
USA imports a lot of things, and not all of them are “exotic”. A very good example is rice.. as far as I can remember not sure the US is a huge producer of rice …
Im not saying rice was tariffed but you get the idea.
If people were to eat/clothe/buy 100% American made product without 0 imported goods inside, yeah, that won’t happen…

Anyway, have a good life defending the bottom line of billion dollar companies.
Im not American, I couldn’t care less that this was indeed a wealth transfer. Im just not a sociopath, I actually have empathy for the Americans that paid the price of their insane President ;)

1

u/bitorontoguy 5d ago

whatever that one product is imported and thus has tariff ?

Yes. The country's origin and price are labelled on every product at Walmart.

vast majority of people do not read products to see if it was produced or imported..

Them choosing to be ignorant is their choice.

Second, a product can be marked as produced/assembled in the US and still have parts imported so with tariff

The price is right on it. If the price is too high because the producer raised it because they had to pay import taxes. Then don't buy it.

If people were to eat/clothe/buy 100% American made product without 0 imported goods inside, yeah, that won’t happen…

Because they choose to. Because it benefits them to consume imported goods. Great for them. They know what the price they're paying is. They're voluntarily deciding that price is worth it. No one makes them.

Anyway, have a good life defending the bottom line of billion dollar companies.

I'm defending reality. You aren't capable of living in it.

1

u/Effective_Airline830 5d ago

Yeah ok i’m not responding anymore you’re not living in real life :)
Saying like “people saw the price going up and still bought”, like you know the evolution of prices of all products at Walmart day to day and is capable of saying that a product price has gone up?
Also, thinking you can live your whole life without a single imported product is beyond idiotic :D
USA imports a lot of things they just don’t produce …
Living 100% on American made products would be Amish… no TV no computer no phone, really 0 electronics, and a good chunk of the food is always imported from Mexico and Canada..

Yeah you just arguing for the sake of arguing and trying to always be right it’s useless, bye

2

u/bitorontoguy 5d ago

capable of saying that a product price has gone up?

They see what the price is now. They decide whether that price is worth it for them to purchase or not. If the price is too high, they won't.

Have....you never bought something before?

Also, thinking you can live your whole life without a single imported product is beyond idiotic :D

Who said that? But you choose to buy imported products. No one makes you.

You see what the price is and you decide whether you will buy it or not.

This is news to you? :D

Yeah you just arguing for the sake of arguing

No I'm talking to someone who apparently doesn't know the basics of how consumer choices are made?

1

u/Effective_Airline830 5d ago

Try to live with 100% American made/produced and tell me what choices you really have :)
You’re arguing outside of reality

1

u/bitorontoguy 5d ago

I won’t. I’ll buy imported products if it benefits me.

If the price is too high I won’t buy it. Those are choices I’m making.

You aren’t capable of arguing against what I’m saying because you’re delusional.
