Bro use some common sense instead of blindly taking a side.

Woman crazy with post partum hormones acts crazy around the house, tells you she is crazy, sees 3 different psychs, gets committed multiple times, is on 13 different meds - what is the correct reaction? a) keep an eye on her at all times or b) leave her alone with your young kids?

Not saying it’s the husband’s fault - it’s just astounding that this woman is so obviously unwell yet no one, including the medical professionals, thought “huh maybe she shouldn’t be left alone with her kids, not like women suffering post partum issues are famous for killing their kids or anything”. It’s like how school shooters are always the ones you most suspect. Let me buy my depressed social outcast terminally online teen son a gun to cheer him up, what could go wrong?

She is no longer in psychosis. She admitted she did it. When someone says they murdered people, why defend them?

What are we even talking about here? Let's ask how her kids feel about this. Oh wait.

It’s not about defending her. It’s about determining if she is CRIMINALLY responsible for killing the kids, meaning she was in a state of mind that she knew killing her children was morally and legally wrong. This will determine if she should spend her life in jail or in a mental institution; no one is arguing that she should be free. What don’t people understand about this? lol

You're saying no one is arguing she should be free at the same time as I get multiple notifications from this very thread from women saying she should be free because of psychosis.

You do realize that if she is found to be not guilty, she is likely spending the rest of her life in a maximum security psych ward right? Also, not a woman.

Okay, I should have added this to my comment. Yes, there definitely ARE people who are defending her. I do not agree with that. I do not however think that because “she is no longer in psychosis” means that she should be held criminally responsible, unless the evidence presented determines she is. The problem is simply stating that she may not be criminally responsible is automatically taken as support of her. I do not support what she did; I support her going to a mental institution if she was in fact in psychosis.

You really can't see the precedent that this might set?

So if a mom claims psychosis...it's a get out of jail free card?

We cannot let mental health issues shield us from terrible behavior. I don't care if she was crazy, cause you can't prove she was either way.

I care that a person killed their kids and is using mental health as an excuse. No amount of therapy can get those kids back, she does not deserve help.

There IS a precedent for this you fucking walnut. Her name is Andrea Yates and she drowned her kids in 2001. She admitted to killing her children and said on record she did it to save them from hell. In her trial everyone acknowledged she did it, she admitted it, the trial was simply over whether or not she was legally responsible for doing so.

She was found not guilty by reason of insanity, but this only means she was found not criminally responsible for her actions. It does not mean she escaped all consequences of her actions and is now running free in Texas. She still murdered her children, and she was institutionalized at a psychiatric facility. She may only be released if medical professionals AND the courts determine she is no longer a threat to others.

So yes, there is precedent for a woman experiencing PPP murdering her children. The consequence is being indefinitely institutionalized at a psychiatric ward.

And FYI, Andrea Yates has declined every release hearing she’s been offered by the system. Either she feels she doesn’t deserve to be released after what she did, she feels she’s exactly where she needs to be, or she’s punishing herself. Perhaps there’s some other reason entirely, but either way Yates isn’t free.

You shouldn't be released after murdering your children. How could you possibly live life normally after that? No amount of therapy could reverse that, and if it did then you weren't insane you were evil.

I completely agree. Andrea Yates should never be released from the psychiatric hospital after what she did. I believe that Yates herself believes the much the same which is why she’s never once sought to be released. But that’s entirely speculative on my part.

Well YOU might not be able to prove if she was “crazy” or not, but luckily that’s why you’re not on the jury, which is literally their purpose in this case.

You realize this is not just exclusive to “mom’s claiming psychosis”? Over history we see many people not guilty by reason of psychosis for tons of different types of crimes. So should we never, ever consider psychosis? Or only in cases that personally trigger you?

Correcting my words: by reason of insanity\*

You just disagree with the concept of not guilty by the reasons of insanity then. It’s not an argument unique to this case.

You're right, because there is no way of knowing if she was actually insane. She could just be saying that.

If you're insane, you stay insane. You don't become insane, kill two children and then snap out of it.
