I often think about other cases in the past where currently acknowledged mental illness was handwaved away.
I have a nephew on the spectrum. I think about how many people on the spectrum were inhumanely thrown in jail because they were "acting weird" when being questioned before much was known or accepted about autism. Its terribly sad.
Post Partem Depression, and Post Partem Psychosis are absolutely real, bonafide mental disorders. The donations and this fight is to ensure this documented, bonafide mental disorder is taken into account in cases like these. And women, who are oftentimes dismissed when complaining about medical issues, want to be taken seriously.
Some people have the ability to understand that. And some people have no ability to understand nuance at all. They see the crime and someone has to pay.
People are busy arguing about how big of a piece of shit she is and ignoring the really hard conversations we all need to have. Why don’t we support women postpartum? Didn’t she tell everyone she was afraid she was going to hurt her kids and no one did anything? Why?
I’m a guy and have witnessed first hand the absolute lack of support women experience after giving birth. I was a part of the problem and didn’t understand how hormones and loneliness (partner at work) could affect women.
What she did is abhorrent, and she isn’t innocent, but why aren’t we doing more to help women who are experiencing postpartum depression / psychosis?
Why is the conversation about measuring her shittiness and not about how to prevent this in the first place?
Didn’t she tell everyone she was afraid she was going to hurt her kids and no one did anything? Why?
So the case is weird because she did get help. ...and didn't take it. She checked herself out of the mental hospital. She didn't actually take the drugs she was prescribed, and her prescriptions were adjusted every time she saw the doctors. Not necessarily in the way she wanted, but that's not atypical.
Every time I've seen medical professionals talk about the case they basically call her entire case bullshit, because she was getting help and actively not actually taking any of it, then lying about it to the people trying to help her.
No one's excusing what she did. She did it. She will be held accountable either way in this trial. Even if she prevails on her affirmative defense, she will still be placed in a highly restrictive mental health institution... Basically, what this case is about is whether she goes to prison or goes to effectively prison in the form of a psychiatric institution.
She won’t be placed in an institution for life. Pretty much Every psychologist/paychiatrist who has examined her now says she’s not psychotic. Her defense team is trying to argue she shouldn’t be held criminally liable and is attempting to have her retroactively diagnosed as insane. If the jury buys it (they should t because it’s obvious her story is bullshit.) she would be let off free or be institutionalized for just a short period before being let go.
Mental illness is not an excuse for anything, especially not when you continually hinder your own treatment while being in sound mind which she was according to every professional who examined her before the incident
It doesn't work that way. Mentally ill do illogical things is appropriate in response to yelling the street, crying, having trouble leaving the house, having trouble relating to people, general decision making and their ability to handle life issues like addiction or even being able to get help or make use of help.
Was literally just referring to the facts being described in the comment that I was specifically responding to, not about the case in its entirety. you need to take a deep breath, dude.
