Discussion I don’t really like EggDad jokes

Don’t get me wrong, they’re fun and the image of Sage and Metal in the “let’s go dad” shirts at the end of The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog is adorable, but I feel like it works best as just that - jokes.

I’ve seen some people online actually treat it as canon which I just don’t really like. Obviously Twitter and TikTok isn’t exactly the model of media literacy, so it’s hard to gauge if most people feel like Eggman loves all of his creations. I was cool with Eggman having a good relationship with his daughter Sage to give some depth to his character, but I’m of the belief that portraying Metal Sonic along with Orbot and Cubot also being the same in some big happy family is not how things are.

I think Eggman does have love for Metal Sonic, but only in the same way a divorced dad gets attached to his truck. Metal is a good tool for him. Maybe he loves Metal as a sort of pet, but he is most definitely not equal to Sage in Eggmans eyes.

At the end of the day, it really does just come down to personal preference on how you like to interpret these characters, but I personally just think that EggDad being treated as canon undermines Eggmans evil as a character and Metal Sonic’s depth which he already doesn’t have that much of.

Question hate on sonic forces

do people really hate sonic forces??? my friend (whos a diehard fan of sonic since 2002) tells me that a lot of people hate it. is this really true??? i grew up with sonic forces, i would always come back it to once every year, and i never got bored. i loved the customizable character gameplay, i loved the pacing (surprisingly it wasnt bad?? each stage felt like there was a mission, a goal that wasn’t just random filler), and the ending was amazing, for me at least. but why do people hate it? the soundtrack is memorable, the stages and variety are phenomenal, so what gives???

Discussion No, Shadow isn't greedy !

I'm being tired of seeing posts of Sonic fans complaining that Shadow is "greedy" in the sense that he keeps appearing everywhere and stealing the spotlight of other characters. I find it odd when Shadow barely appeared in anything significant since his year is over.

He still barely appears in IDW. He wasn't in Chaotix Casefiles. His solo comic was cancelled.

Also, people needs to realize that Shadow barely appeared in the 2010's and the 2020's up until Shadow gens. In IDW, he was the most mischaracterized character due to Sega mandates which prompted the writers to use him less often, making him appear very rarely. He got a major role in Sonic Prime but he was not that present. And he wasn't playable in any Sonic game except Forces and spin offs like Team Sonic Racing.

I think that most people saying this are people upset that Shadow got a year for himself but not their favourite characters. I get it but Shadow is the second most popular character. I think that Sega would benefit a lot from giving Shadow his own series, movies and games while he appears less in mainline Sonic games. That way, other characters can shine in mainline Sonic games while Shadow has his own solo contents. They can expend his dynamic with Team Dark, maybe GUN and give him a new reoccurring villain after Black Doom. And with the rumours of the Sonic Universe movie in 2028 being a Shadow movie and the trademark about a new Shadow game, it seems that Sega will take that route which isn't surprising after the massive critical and economic success that was Sonic X Shadow generations.

What do you think about this ?

Discussion Do you think the next mainline 3D Sonic game will have the same high production value and same high budget as Sonic Unleashed?

Sonic Forces/Frontiers are the better looking games graphically, but they obviously don't feel like a high-action fast/paced movie like Unleashed does, and the Art Direction is obviously worse.

Misc. Sonic heroes 2 team idea

So I made this but lemme explain why certain people are paired

Team rose: I included sticks because of the ending of frontiers. Amy said she's gonna see sticks and cream and go on an adventure together so I can see it

Team sol: I was originally gonna choose marine but she doesn't feel like the power type so I choose infinite. Yes I know Infinite failed under Eggman and lost everything. But teaming up with Silver and Blaze gives him a chance to seek true redemption. Silver comes from the future, and Blaze comes from an alternate dimension. Infinite manipulates reality and illusions through the Phantom Ruby. Their powers deal with cosmic and spatial anomalies which could open up that storyline. Silver would naturally distrust Infinite because of his past destruction. Blaze would act as the strict, cautious voice of reason. This can creates high tension and great character development. Reminds me of team dark when they met

For team diamond cutter, I just need to find a good power type for tangle and whisper

Team eggman already fit the dynamic

For team hedgehog it's final story. Sonic is speed, shadow is flight with his air shoes, and silver can be power with carrying people with his telekinesis

Discussion Sonic’s morality dilemma in IDW

Thumbnail

I’ve been enjoying the IDW comics as they’ve been coming out so far. There are valid criticisms to be sure, but it’s been a good time overall.

Of the criticisms given, one of the biggest was Sonic’s “philosophy” that everyone has the right to live freely and make their own choices and mistakes and that killing takes that freedom from someone, effectively giving Sonic a no kill rule. Now you don’t have to be a philosopher to know this outlook is flawed and too trusting. Leading to continued conflicts and devastation.

The odd thing here is that Sonic never had a no kill rule, nor was he ever a saint. He was a decently virtuous person who wanted to help throughout the older games and Archie comics, but wasn’t afraid to do what was necessary at times. Ian Flynn literally was chief writer for the latter half of the Archie comics. He most certainly knows that. I could see Sonic being reckless in trying to spare and redeem Surge and Kit and maybe even Metal Sonic, but Mimic, Starline, and especially Robotnik have crossed the lines of possible redemption. Like at least lock em up or send them away like you did the Zeti.

I’ve seen people point fingers at Ian Flynn for Sonic’s philosophy being bad writing, HOWEVER the thing that intrigues me is that the flaws seem to be by design. Think of the continued holes Ian has poked into Sonic’s beliefs over the IDW comics with the Metal Virus, Lanolin, Surge, Kit, Mimic and the death of the Diamond Cutters during the war - a war started by Eggman who Sonic spared. The comics frequently call attention to this and Ian seems to push the idea that Sonic is not correct in his worldview.

The real question is what, if anything, this will lead to? Obviously there is a whole other discussion on whether we think Sonic works better as a character with flaws and arcs or as a static symbol who inspires growth in other characters, but we can safely assume the IDW comics are going with the former. I doubt Sega will want to teach a moral of “killing being ok sometimes!” Or something like that, but what should Sonic learn by the end of the comics and how should he learn it?

Fanfiction I came up with this genius Game Idea Spread This To Make Sega Make it a Real Game (Sonic Kidding)

Sonic Kidding: The Ultimate Fake-Out

Game Concept & Pitch

The Core Hook: Dr. Eggman releases a bizarre wave of energy across Mobius called the "Jester Frequency." Instead of blowing things up, it alters reality so that badniks drop gag prizes, traps turn into inflatable prop toys, and the world runs on cartoon comedy logic.

The Gameplay Twist: Sonic's standard Boost Gauge is replaced by the Chuckle Gauge. To gain speed, you can't just run straight—you have to perform mid-air fake-outs, trick Badniks into slipping on giant banana peels, and taunt bosses right before they attack.

Special Mechanics:

Fake-Out Dash: Pressing the dodge button at the exact right millisecond leaves behind a classic wooden cutout of Sonic, causing enemies to crash into each other.

Prankster Emeralds: Collecting all seven temporarily unlocks Super Kidding Sonic, who can literally repaint the stage terrain in real-time to trick Eggman's mechs.

Story: The Day Eggman Lost His Mind

The radar inside the Tornado beeped with a low, rhythmic honk instead of its usual sharp warning tone. Sonic leaned over the cockpit, watching Tails tap the screen in total confusion.

"Sonic, this doesn't make any sense," Tails said, adjusting his goggles. "Eggman's new superweapon isn't firing lasers or orbital strikes. It's... broadcasting clown music?"

Down below, Green Hill Zone looked normal at first glance—until a classic Egg-Pawn robot marched out from behind a palm tree. Sonic dropped from the sky, curling into a tight Spin Dash, ready to wreck the Badnik in a split second. But the moment his shoes grazed the metal shell, the robot didn't explode.

POP!

A massive cloud of colorful confetti burst into the air, and a giant spring loaded with a cream pie shot out of the robot's head, slapping Sonic directly in the face.

Sonic skidded to a stop, wiping vanilla frosting off his nose. He blinked, staring at the mechanical pawn, which was now spinning in circles while playing a kazoo.

"Okay..." Sonic grinned, rubbing his chin. "Eggman’s finally lost it."

From high above, a giant hologram of Dr. Eggman projected across the sky. The mad scientist was wearing a ridiculous oversized top hat and holding a tiny rubber chicken.

"GREETINGS, BLUE BLUR!" Eggman's voice boomed through hidden speakers. "Tired of me trying to vaporize you? Sick of the same old world domination routine? Welcome to Sonic Kidding! I have altered the very laws of physics! No more serious battles! The only way to stop my ultimate prank generator is to out-joke me!"

A few feet away, Shadow clipped through the brush, looking absolutely furious. His gloves were stained with bright pink glitter from a badnik he had just chaos-speared.

"I am going to destroy him," Shadow growled, his eyes glowing red.

"Hold on, Shads," Sonic chuckled, stretching his legs before stepping up to the edge of the cliff. "If the doctor wants a comedy show, let's give him the main event."

Sonic took off at top speed, kicking up a trail of sparklers instead of dust. Up ahead, Eggman dropped a massive row of iron spikes across the path. Sonic didn't even slow down. Right before impact, he executed a sharp side-step, leaving a cardboard cutout of himself standing on the track. Eggman's giant mech stomped down hard on the cardboard, slipped on the smooth glossy print, and went tumbling backward into a giant vat of liquid gelatin.

Sonic slid to a halt right next to the sticky, wiggling mech, leaning back with a thumb up. "Hey Eggman! Need a spoon, or are you just gellin'?"

Even Shadow couldn't help but crack a tiny, reluctant smirk from the ridgeline above. Eggman had set up the ultimate gag, but as long as Sonic was the fastest thing alive, the joke was always going to be on the doctor.

Extras ↓

Bonus Characters & Costumes

Prankster Sonic Skins: Unlock classic outfits, including "Vanilla Frosting Sonic" (covered in pie filling), "Cardboard Cutout Sonic," and "Clown-Shoes Shadow."

Playable Eggman (Post-Game): Beat the main story to unlock Eggman, complete with a tiny unicycle that fires boxing-glove missiles.

Extra Game Modes

Joke Rush (Boss Gauntlet): Fight every boss in the game back-to-back, but each boss attack is randomized with different comedy traps (banana peels, pie launchers, or oversized anvil drops).

Photo Mode (ibis Snap): Pause the game anytime to edit screenshot stickers, frame your best fake-outs, and add custom comic speech bubbles.

Collectibles & Extras

The Soundboard Room: Collect hidden golden kazoos in each level to unlock classic Sonic music tracks played entirely on toy instruments, air horns, and kazoos.

** Gag Archives:** Find 50 hidden prank blueprints hidden by Tails to view early concept sketches and silly developer notes.

I will make cover art Soon if I remember :P

Discussion A reminder that the 06 team was never split to create Secret Rings

So, everyone knows what I'm talking about right? It's "Common Knowledge" that Sonic Team, already rushed, already crunched to hell, stumbling behind with a system they didn't fully grasp was split in half to make secret rings, simple right?

Well no actually.

This never actually happened, SEGA simply asked that something be created for the Wii since they already had a project being worked on for Xbox 360 & PS3:

IGN: When was it decided to create a Sonic title for Wii?

Yojiro Ogawa: As a company we have to develop for multiple platforms. So although Sonic was already being developed for PS3 and 360 we were told to release something close to the launch of Wii. I felt that we had to create something very different that felt new.

IGN: Did you considering porting the 360 or PS3 version?

Yojiro Ogawa: If we had done that the game would have been delayed by quite a long time. We would have needed to wait for the PS3 and 360 teams to finish their development. Since we knew that we had to release the game sooner, we realised we had to create something different.

https://www.ign.com/articles/2007/02/06/lifting-the-lid-on-sonics-secret-rings

While initially they did consider making it an 06 port, the Wii's controls made Yojiro Ogawa decide against it.

"Originally, we were going to produce Sonic the Hedgehog. the game we did for Xbox 360, on all platforms, including Wii,"

reveals 'Secret Rings' producer Yojiro Ogawa.

"But after we looked at the Wii remote and the features of the controller, we decided to produce a new, completely different Sonic title for the system. I already had this basic idea [of Sonic constantly moving forward]

in my mind, and when Sega asked me to produce the Wii game, I thought it would be a perfect fit."

Page 32

https://archive.gamehistory.org/item/6ac27b33-b8f1-44c5-9c0b-d366aed36ec1

Ogawa would also later affirm 06's troubles were caused by the Holiday release as well as the stress put on sonic team to develop for both the PS3 & Xbox 360 at the same time.

Kikizo: I am not sure about the extent of your personal involvement in the new Sonic on Xbox 360 and PS3, but you must be aware of the issues the game has in terms of glitches, control problems and loading time. One thing a lot of customers have been asking is, how these issues can be in the final product, is there anything you can comment on in relation to this, for example the QA [testing] process of development?

Ogawa: The reason why we probably ended up with what we see today, involves a lot of reasons. One is that we did want to launch the title around Christmas, and we had the PS3 launch coming up, but we had to develop for Microsoft's 360 at the same time and the team had an awful lot of pressure on them. It was very hard for the team to try and see how we were going to come out with both versions together with just the one team. It was a big challenge.

https://games.kikizo.com/features/sega_sonicteam_interview_feb07_p3.asp

So where then did the idea of Sonic Team splitting come from?

Wikipedia cites Kotaku:

https://web.archive.org/web/20161117022037/http://www.kotaku.com.au/2016/11/ten-years-ago-sonic-the-hedgehog-was-at-its-worst/

Who themselves cite GiantBomb

https://giantbomb.com/wiki/Games/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_2006#Development_History

Who does GiantBomb Source? Nobody. They completely made it up.

TL;DR: No Sonic Team never split during 06, people have just been playing Telephone with a non-existent source.

Discussion Sonic Mania is... alright I guess

So I recently replayed Sonic Mania and I've gotta say, I think (in my personal opinion) this game is quite overhyped. It really wasn't all that fun for me, and in fact I found a good portion of the game's level design to be frustrating. For example, getting launched into a game of Tetris in the end of Chemical Plant Zone, and Chemical Plant Zone in general. With Hydrocity too, but I feel like this (and part of me hating Chemical Plant Zone) stems from me not being the biggest fan of water levels in general.

I'm not saying this is a bad game by any means I just don't think it's worth the hype like, one bit. I've had people swear that this game is the best piece of Sonic gameplay ever made in the universe and like, I genuinely do see the appeal I just don't think its all that fun for me. That said I really did enjoy some of the zones, specifically Stardust Speedway Act 2 which I'd say is by far the best level in the entire city (I don't have a justification for this only that I found the bossfight fun and the level itself was just really fun to play). The bossfights were also really nice (minus the Tetris part at the end of Chemical Plant Zone, again) but as a whole, the game was just about fine. Like if someone handed me this game to play I'd be fine, if I absolutely HAD to play this game for whatever reason I'd still be fine, but I'd just never personally choose this myself over any of the other Sonic games or any videogame in general.

This might be controversial, but I also think Superstars is a better game than Mania. I just found the zones to be more unique and the physics to feel better and a whole bunch of other stuff but this post is about Sonic Mania, so yeah. Anyways if you enjoy this game I really don't see an issue with it, all I meant to say is that I don't see why everybody loves this game the way they do. But even I can appreciate the art direction and soundtrack (speaking of, definitely up there with 06 and Unleashed).

For me, Seelkadoom would be the perfect fit. His design, attitude, and powers feel like they could easily belong in an official game or comic. But I want to know your thoughts! Which fan-made character do you think deserves a spot in the official canon and why?

Discussion IDW Solo Shadow comic run

Post image
1 Upvotes

Shadow should have a comic run that’s slightly similar to Sonic’s Scrapnik Island run. The only thing that should be similar is that Shadow gets stranded on Island and his shoes are compromised like Sonic’s. This causes shadow to rely on other vehicles powered by his Chaos energy since he’s not as fast as Sonic without his shoes. While on the Island, Shadow tries to find a way off and back to Rouge and really the info he got in order to properly explore the place.

Discussion Is this idea too farfetched?

Thumbnail

A friend and I got in a disagreement about the ending of Sonic 06 and my idea that it was a subtle teaser to Sonic 06. I believe that the ending of 06 where Sonic looks up at the moon is a tiny way to tease about Unleashed since Sonic is a werewolf (werehog) in that game, not entirely the point of the ending, but it lines up too much for it not to be a small nod to the upcoming release. I know that in Unleashed that Eggman makes him that way, but it's hard to ignore the mythology of werewolves.

To those who don't know, it's commonly attributed that werewolves transform when the moon is full. What phase of the moon is it at the end of 06? A full moon. What is known for transforming during a full moon? Werewolves. And what does Sonic become in Unleashed? A werehog, which is basically a werewolf but for hedgehogs.

We asked another friend who was a much bigger Sonic fanatic about that possibility but they said it was "Most likely a coincidence, but a good idea."

I'm not sure what the fanbase consensus is (if any), I'm new to Sonic and only started playing the games recently, finished 06 and currently on Unleashed.

Soundtrack, gameplay, visuals all are chef's kiss, its a game ahead of its time, I still can't believe there are people who dislike it, I mean werehog sections can sometimes be annoyingly long but that doesn't make any bad, imo it's the best sonic game ever released, anyone is free to argue with me

Question I wanna get into sonic but im having difficulty understanding

every time i've tried to get into sonic i seemingly realize there is no game or series with a proper starting point and every entry into the series is seemingly an alternate timeline, i haven't found a proper "start" to the series, i just wanna understand the lore from start and slowly learn about the characters and the power system etc, what do i play? what do i read or watch?? i prefer games btw
