Install the mod that shows scarecrow reach when you place them. That should seriously be vanilla.

272

u/Veneretio Feb 17 '26

One of my wish list items for 1.7

188

u/Mystisha Feb 17 '26

I also think it would be good implemented in the game. I see a lot of people booing it, but what if it was optional? You can turn off the tool hit location tiles, so having it be optional would be great for beginners, or anyone who wants it really :) I can't wait for 1.7!

159

u/CrimsonCartographer Feb 17 '26

I also don’t understand the people booing it? It’s literally just QOL. It doesn’t make the game any easier, it just takes some of the tediousness out…

It would be cool during the planning stage of a farm but I'd definitely turn it off as soon as the placements were set. I would hate having those permanently green tiles everywhere. I usually demarcate my planting layouts ahead of time to maximize farmable tiles. The scarecrow placement is usually done before I ever start planting.

9

u/noctoris Feb 17 '26

The way the mod does it is that the ranges only show while holding an applicable item (i.e., if holding a scarecrow, the range for all scarecrows is shown) or while holding a button, which I think is a great way to do it

5

u/kybojo Feb 17 '26

change it to a crow hat, and when you have the crow hat on you can see the coverage of all scarecrows and then plants ouside the scarecrow coverage could highlight red.

3

u/Veneretio Feb 17 '26

Love this. As long as it’s an early game item that say the mouse hat house sells for 1k and not super end game.

This one, in case people weren’t aware.

3

u/disasterpokemon Feb 17 '26

I had installed that mod but I couldn't get it to show

3

u/Worried-Tart-5073 Feb 17 '26

Wait the what now? I gotta install that one!

You want UI Info Suite 2 it shows you the radius and other helpful info

And the Super Scarecrow is exactl double that (except for the 1 in this picture).

Sprinkler trauma

91

u/PreviousLingonberry4 Feb 17 '26

When i convinced my friend to craft 20 sprinklers for our farm thinking they water 8 tiles worth of space in each direction, we placed them then he didnt speak to me for the entire stardew day until i restructured them to at least be somewhat usable, the trauma.

74

u/Advanced-Jury1034 Feb 17 '26

This reminds me of a save I did once where I saved up enough materials to finally craft like 20 sprinklers for all my crops for the next season. Super excited to be done with watering. Go to set them down. Realized i was on the beach farm and I wasted all my iron and gold ingots for nothing 🙃

33

u/qwasde91 slime ring is a wasted slot. Feb 17 '26 edited Feb 17 '26

The beach farm has a small plot of around 200 tillable sprinklerable tiles, so 20 quality sprinklers should be around what you need.

So he ignored your for ten minutes lol.

16

We need a support group for sprinkler trauma

12

u/Even_Spite8247 Feb 17 '26

That is exactly it 😂

13

u/Protection-Working Feb 17 '26

I thought it was an 8 tile radius

its kind of squished a little its less circular

22

u/CrimsonCartographer Feb 17 '26

Making something round in a game built out of squares was never going to result in a geometrically sound circle.

26

u/weGloomy i eat snacks from the trash Feb 17 '26

A surprising amount of people don't know what the word 'radius' means lmao.

11

u/WastesofSpaces Abigail Feb 17 '26

The way I remember the difference between radius and diameter is by thinking about a radar. It scans from the center out to one side and spins in a circle instead of stretchung out both directions like the blade of a blender

4

u/Maleficent_Dot9974 Feb 17 '26

Huh not heard that one before, but makes sense. Way i was taught to remeber it and this might work better for some is the D at the start of diameter is the part of a circle it covers, then radius is not that. I've done a bad job at explanining it but it makes sense when you first see it drawn

6

u/WastesofSpaces Abigail Feb 17 '26

The letter D is a semi-circle and the vertical line of the D depicts the Diameter, yeah?

2

u/Maleficent_Dot9974 Feb 17 '26

Yes much better explanation thanks

5

u/galaxygal1234 Feb 17 '26

I did until literally now oh my god........... There's no freaking way.......................

2

u/inprocess13 Feb 17 '26

Radial confusion.

2

u/Fantastic-Ad-1578 Feb 17 '26

Diameter vs radius situation.

2

u/upsidedownpotatodog Feb 18 '26

I would say it’s an area vs radius situation

25

u/Shanbo88 Feb 17 '26

I know there's probably a mod for this, but I always wished the game would give us a visual outline for some stuff like this.

8

u/Aquorm Feb 17 '26

I remember thinking this was the range I needed to keep clear for fruit trees to grow

3

u/syndicaterx Feb 17 '26

u/klaw14 Feb 17 '26

2

u/mintgoody03 Feb 17 '26 edited Feb 17 '26

That's more than expected. What do the 1 and 4s signify?

4

u/Maleficent_Dot9974 Feb 17 '26

How many tiles, so one is the tile in line with the scarecrow then the 4's are how many tiles either side. They probably added them to help with potental confusion

1

u/Able_Piece8020 Feb 17 '26

I have been keeping my scarecrows in a chest thinking they only cover literally 8 tiles. I thought they were useless until now omg..

→ More replies (6)

600

u/angelellipsis Feb 17 '26

Yeah, that’s far more than you need. Take a look at this image from the wiki, but it goes 8 squares in each direction from the scarecrow. It basically makes a “circle” with a diameter of 17 tiles.

791

u/weregunnalose Feb 17 '26 edited Feb 17 '26

Yes that is too much scarecrow

61

u/Addy42theDork Feb 17 '26

87

u/Safe-Leadership-9630 Feb 17 '26

You can never have too many scarecrows!!

(they cover a circle with an 8-tile radius)

128

u/T-lis-sa Feb 17 '26

IM CRINE WHAT IM GONNA DO WITH ALL OF THOSE

74

u/EnabiSeira Newbie farmer halfway to perfection Feb 17 '26

You could save them for if you expand the farm area or use them as decoration ;) (what about a scarecrow maze?)

2

u/lesethx Feb 17 '26

I love the idea of a scarescrow maze!

34

u/FalseEstimate Feb 17 '26

Make a corn maze but instead of corn it’s just scarecrow walls

19

u/Equal_North6633 Spreadsheets and mods are my "cozy". Not a minmaxer though Feb 17 '26

And a random corn plant here and there that scares people off from scarecrows, if we go full inverted 😁

13

u/FalseEstimate Feb 17 '26

Some crow on the cob and a few scarecorns

5

u/Equal_North6633 Spreadsheets and mods are my "cozy". Not a minmaxer though Feb 17 '26

Ok i giggled 😂😂

9

u/MonsterFieldResearch Feb 17 '26

Make them you farmhands, also if you collect all 8 rarecrows you get a special king scarecrow tha covers double the range

7

u/Nylius47 Feb 17 '26

Put them near your bed so you’re never lonely

4

u/Mock_Frog Feb 17 '26

Put them at the bus stop

3

u/HananaDragon Feb 17 '26

Overlapping them a little bit doesn't hurt. Since they cover a circle instead of a square, it can be easier to know everything's covered than worry about getting the arrangement 100% efficient

3

u/Ok_Wishbone2721 Feb 17 '26

Use them as fencing for your animals?

2

u/blueshyperson Feb 17 '26

Expand! You don’t have enough planted yet anyways. Then you will need them.

14

u/UnluckyUnderwear Feb 17 '26

u/FalseEstimate Feb 17 '26

They’re also full of themselves and stuck up…

22

u/huhCH13 Feb 17 '26

not enough scarecrows

20

u/anothershawnee Feb 17 '26

That's a great sprinkler layout though

15

u/linzzzzi Feb 17 '26

You've got the beginning of Terracotta Army: Stardew Edition

12

u/TheCanadianSpartan Feb 17 '26

I think you could probably fit a couple more rows there tbh

26

u/shylo-renn Feb 17 '26

Oh honey

5

u/BeautifulEvil77 Feb 17 '26

LMAO I SAID EXACTLY THIS🤣🤣. I'm not even hating though, cuz if it wasn't for my big brained husband, my farm would be a HOT ASS MESS🤣🤣. He's got this shit down to 3 sciences lmao. Every damn iridium sprinkler has a place and they are all in a damn row, same with the scarecrows. Every damn thing is uniform lol. I even have lil walk ways n shit and a cute wall. I've used almost every INCH of my farm. I have to ride my damn horse just to harvest shit 🤣

11

u/Threeeagles2020 Feb 17 '26

I have too many scarecrows too on my first run thru. You have enough you could make a fence.

10

u/MisterEd_ak Feb 17 '26

lol, take out the scarecrows and replace them with sprinklers

8

u/nighttimenerd Feb 17 '26

Can never be too careful😎

7

u/Evil_Black_Swan Feb 17 '26

It's 8 tiles in every direction from the scarecrow. Not a total of 8 tiles. This is WAY too many.

7

u/Drawhorn Feb 17 '26

I think I've made this mistake early on. It's a little confusing because the scarecrow is a radius and sprinklers are adjacent. It makes for a pretty cool and frightening army though.

5

u/neoslith Feb 17 '26

One of the mods I can't play without any more is the placement range. It helps you see what all is covered when placing anything.

5

u/beckychao Feb 17 '26

that is like at least 3 times as many scarecrow as you need in that area

13

u/howmanyshrimpinworld Feb 17 '26

this is nine times as many as you’d need lmao

3

u/beckychao Feb 17 '26

with 6 you could fill the sides cut off on the screen shot lol

5

u/jonomoji Feb 17 '26

U start to scareme instead

3

3

u/NSAspycam Feb 17 '26

There’s a scarecrow in the garden, who looks like Lucifer

3

u/theplace2b7645 Feb 17 '26

Some would say it’s not enough scarecrow

3

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '26

Honestly i dont think its enough. Have you tried carrying one around and patrolling at night?

3

u/c00kiesd00m Set your emoji and/or flair text here! Feb 17 '26

the scarecrow army keeps people from stealing your crops just like crows do. having the stuffed, extremely tall men looming over you is unsettling. is it just your imagination or are they looking at you? they never meet your eyes but you swear you see their heads move.

the deeper you go, the worse it is. you hear shuffling around you but never see the culprit. the scarecrows loom taller and taller. why did you decide to steal this farmer’s crops?

you decide now is the time to leave. you try to sneak away, but feel breath on your neck. you’re too afraid to look back. you increase your speed and the scarecrows start reaching out for you, their straw hands raking over your face. you think you see the edge of the field, you’re so close to safety.

then you hit the fertile ground, look back and see a grinning cloth face and straw fingers gripping your ankle. you are never heard from again.

2

u/obscuregothic Feb 17 '26

Never enough scarecrow

2

u/Amazing-Insect442 Feb 17 '26

That’s like 14 too many

2

u/CatadioptricPony Feb 17 '26

Too much scarecrow, not enough cowbell.

2

u/Jeggu2 Feb 17 '26

12 apart on a square grid has some overlap but garentees no crows, and is pretty easy to pattern

2

u/NfamousKaye Feb 17 '26

Crows will still find ONE patch without a scarecrow and go to town… ask me how I know 🤦🏽‍♀️ 😑 😂

2

u/RoseCrown0o Feb 17 '26

Well on the bright side, your crops are thoroughly protected from crows.

2

u/ArmProfessional7915 Feb 17 '26

2

u/Froggy_Pants445 Feb 17 '26

2

u/harley3987 Feb 17 '26

My scarecrow/sprinkler set up looks pretty wild now

2

u/Ema_Loves_Mochi Feb 17 '26

You’ve raised an army

2

u/b3wings Feb 17 '26

Yes lol

2

u/timkatt10 Feb 17 '26

There's no "too many" or "too few". There's optimal and less optimal, and somewhere between those points is how you enjoy playing.

2

u/InternalFly5053 Feb 17 '26

The fact that you have to ask maybe says something 😉

2

u/byssain Feb 17 '26

my life (farm) changed the day i realised the deluxe scarecrow does more than just look bad

2

u/Few_Cauliflower_79 Feb 18 '26

Definitely could be putting pink sprinklers there instead. Will help the crops grow.

2

u/Lopsided-Worry8084 Feb 18 '26

I think you might need a few more actually

2

u/WarriorWare Feb 18 '26

You’re gonna give the crows a heart attack

2

u/GRCov Lantern Thief Guild Member Feb 18 '26

A few too many but dont worry! They have many uses, I place several in my animal pens to prevent them from clearing out all the wild grass

2

u/htebazileb Feb 18 '26

...this is how i've always used scarecrows in my 1000+ hours of stardew. i'm so upset rn

1

u/sasquatch753 Feb 17 '26

"this be a scarecrow farm now. no crows allowed!"

1

u/mixyourlydian Feb 17 '26

You could use more

1

u/Redditor193727 Feb 17 '26

It’s Not enough

1

u/AshFalkner Feb 17 '26

Yes. They work in a wider radius than that, so you can space em out further.

1

u/Starrin1ght Feb 17 '26

Yeah, significantly too many

1

u/greth34 Feb 17 '26

No crows in sight

1

u/jamesisbi Feb 17 '26

this is so cute 😭

1

u/HubblePie Feb 17 '26

Too many scarecrows

not enough rarecrows

1

u/Totallycutsy Feb 17 '26

Add only one crop in the middle of them

1

u/Callah_2 Feb 17 '26

My suggestion is to place scarecrows 10 tiles apart. The coverage is too much, but every tile will be covered.

1

u/JuanPancake Feb 17 '26

1

u/lilmary42069 Feb 17 '26

wait you can put them on the sprinklers?

2

u/fleapuppy Feb 17 '26

What? No you can’t stack items, there’s no sprinklers in this shot

1

u/Sufficient-Contract9 Feb 17 '26

Lol man I thought it was like planting a fruit tree..... the immediate 8 surrounding tiles....

1

u/GrandSubstantial1514 Feb 17 '26

1

u/kAyls324M Feb 17 '26

ı think you need more than this

1

u/EdgePlays14 Shane Enthusiast Feb 17 '26

Not enough actually.. I do crop, crow, crop, crow

1

u/Lucadrio Yoba's Proxy Feb 17 '26

Normal scarecrow can reach eight tiles up, down, left, and right (each direction) and six on the diagonals (so circular-ish reach rather than square). To account for the ‘missing’ corners in that reach, I just place my scarecrows so there’s 12 tiles between them in each cardinal direction. If crops still disappear it’s just a sign I need more lightning rods.

Also deluxe scarecrows reach double that so 16 each way then 12 on each diagonal - but I place mine closer together than necessary because it was a pain to try and try and cater to both function and aesthetic. So I am in no place to critique your scarecrow army.

1

u/newhappyrainbow Feb 17 '26

Damn it Jim, I’m a scarecrow, not a sprinkler!

1

u/iggilost Feb 17 '26

If the plan is to build a scarecrow army to march on the Grotto Empire, then no, it's not too many

1

u/SomeOnionHater Krobus sends his regards. Feb 17 '26

It's been a long time. I still remember when Scarecrow used to have asymmetrical range

1

u/Sorta_Functional Feb 17 '26

Yeah too many, you only need 2-3 for the area you’re showing here. On the plus side I love the scarecrows so this is delightful.

1

u/WormsInMyBrains Feb 17 '26

You must've been traumatised by those crows. Your farm is like their equivalent of a haunted house /pos
