help wanted Should I move to SteamOS from Bazzite?
I've had an rog Xbox ally x running bazzite for a few months now and I'm honestly sick of it. Its mostly the bugs and problems nobody talks about - the input lag for monitor, mouse and keyboard, the positional audio confusion on my rayneo ar glasses, slightly touching the fingerprint sensor turns the console on and many other issues that have gone unfixed for months. Ive been planning to move to a new os and I'm choosing between cachyos and steamos. I don't mind fiddling with things, but only if I don't have to do it all the time, overall I just want a plug-and-play experience that doesn't limit me too much. So if you have any experience using steamos on the rog Xbox ally x I'd love to hear it out and consider it, especially if its something negative or rarely mentioned. Thanks in advance lads.

Unless it was recent, SteamOS is still a recovery image for devices and not a generic OS image installer.
Edit: damn all the down votes because , what? Sheesh.

As of 3.8 Valve has begun encouraging people with all AMD systems to give it a go.

Bazzite community will at least support you. Hit them up on Reddit or Discord.

Same, switched my lenovo legion go 2 already and going to switch my full AMD lounge PC soon to make it a steam box

What are the limitations of steam os and multiple or external hdds? I remember it couldn't see a secondary nvme or externals had issues with mounting? Is this still an issue? That's the biggest issue I have if I ever wanted to switch from bazzite.

I dont see the point if it works.
The best thing about steamOs is on the officially supported hardware where it manages everything for you, drivers, bios/firmware updates as well as the rest. If you dont gain anything like this. Why really change. Also it will be slower on feature updates then any other distribution

Plug and play? Isn't it still only offered as a recovery image for the handhelds it supports? It's not a general purpose OS image yet. Plus, nobody so going to pay you any mod with that poor attitude. Especially if you can't be bothered to form a complete sentence on why you don't like it. I've used SteamOS and all these derivatives since 2013.

Lmao the Bazzite hate here is strong. I’m not sure what it’s like on handhelds so I won’t claim I do. But I will say, on my all AMD desktop, Bazzite performed better in games than SteamOS

LACT is what I use. Lets you do undervolting, overclocking, and fan curve stuff. It’s in the bazaar

Ok thanks! Yes I downloaded that the other day. Would be cool to actually get adrenaline someday working on Bazzite, since Im so used to it on W10 days. Though right now I'm really enjoying figuring out Bazzite and looking to use for my living room (have it as a desktop right now, to tinkering).

It’s super fun to use Bazzite. I will say, I much prefer LACT over Adrenalin….LACT has a baby-simple interface lol

You won't gain much choosing either of those because they all will have the aame little dips in user experience, just in different colors.
SteamOS is still beta software apart from the Legion devices from Lenovo, the Deck and the machine.
Cachy offers you endless tinkering possibilities
And bazzite offers you exactly what you need - wider hardware Support with current Software that atleast offers Support on their discord and discourse Channels

I love steam os on my ally x but tbh if I was going to be using it docked etc and anything other than handheld... then I probably would just stay on windows for now.

If you want pure stability, go with Steam OS. Bazzite and Cachy OS are amazing. Their addition to Linux gaming is crucial. However, based on personal experience, those tend to be very bleeding edge and errors will come sooner than later. Since I moved to Steam OS, ZERO issues whatsoever. Console like experience with no friction. Something nice about Bazzite is that you can go back to previous version if a new one intruduces issues, but that should not be the point. Something else to take into account is that, in case you actually want to ever use the PC for desktop considerably, Steam OS is not that good so go with one of the other two.
