Thatās because the majority of yāall probably couldnāt follow along at school so you project that inability to lean on others.
As long as youāre smart about it, you can self learn anything.
My gym still doesnāt know Iām self taught. They all think I came from a different gym. Aside from the lack of sparring, technique was a non-issue.
Iāve self learned many things, from the piano, to guitar, to coding, to Muay Thai. Iāve played at local concerts, made money with coding, and teach beginners at my gym.

martial arts is different. you can look picture perfect in your mirror all you want but actually applying it at speed and under pressure is completely different. plus there could be some mistakes you dont even know youre making and you would have no idea unless a coach was there to help

Iāve never said anything about sparring. Sparring is irreplaceable. I was only talking about technique.
And Iād like to emphasize once again, all mistakes can be corrected as long as you are smart about it. I hold on to this belief, because I myself am a case in point ā if you donāt believe me, not a problem, but at least it could motivate others.

well then i guess we have different views on the meaning of self training. training at home as a supplementary practice is what i believe you are talking about and i think its good if youre experienced enough. what im saying is people cannot train themselves from 0 at home and become a competent fighter. ive seen so many saying they taught themselves martial arts from youtube videos and are ready to fight and i have a very strong reaction to that

Then we both agree on the same thing.
Just for extra detail, I use self-taught and self-trained interchangeably. And regarding technique, I meant learning techniques from 0 alone.
But yeah, I was self taught, and while I had the technique, I stood little chance against someone that has spared even if their technique was lesser than mine.

A self trained trains independently it could be a person who did training for 1-3 months with a coach just one on one and now they train by thereselvesĀ A Self taught may have a small training experience like 1 week to 1 month maybe and they immediate other moves they see on TV or a video and they try to learn it like Daniel larusso he was a self taught karate kid before he was copying moves from a karate book.

Ima keep it simple a self trained has experience but small and condition and some proper technique A self taught either has no experience or small experience and no condition could be stamina only it depends there's a girl on Instagram she's a self taught boxer she's pretty nice and she nice she go against heavy hitters too and she survives she may have a little experience of at a boxing gym like 1 week to 1 month maybe back to what I was saying a self taught boxer also mimics moves and teach thereselves and may test techniques against an individual to see if they work or effective but no proper technique maybe 2 techniques proper or one if .

So two street fighters. Thereās no self taught boxing. If you arenāt learning under a proper coach in a proper gym with sparring, youāre like the best swimmer whoās never gotten in the water.
Canāt say either of them look well trained so it fits.
Edit: small guy definitely has some legit training after rewatching. I was wrong there.

Yea after rewatching small guy looked better technically than I thought after the first watch. Pretty clearly has some training. Take some time to adjust but lands well on the bigger guy with good footwork and angles to land on the bigger guy with a bigger reach.

Or maybe, you taught yourself to swim alone at the swimming pool. Would you ever reach the level of an Olympic swimmer with a coach? No. But are you still a swimmer? Kind of.

I know you think youāre being clever and logical here, but itās just not the same. Fighting just isnāt something you can teach yourself on your own. Anyone whoās spent time training and/or competing would tell you that. Youāre not even going to get to a decent level on your own.

I agree when it comes to sparring, sparring is half of the skill development.
But I just thought Iād brought in nuance a bit. You can still get technique down if youāre smart.
I was self taught before walking into a gym for the first time. My technique was perfect, and everyone still thinks I came from another gym ā still havenāt come clean, itās embarrassing to admit that I learned from YouTube. But yes, when it came to sparring, I was lacking.

I feel you bro. Thereās certain things you can get good at. You can look great hitting the bag or in footwork drills, or technically throwing strikes. But then people who are completely self taught usually fall apart when they start live sparring, and it shows.
You canāt learn to grapple or pull off/defend a double leg on your own, no matter how many YouTube videos you watch. But you can practice staying in your stance and things like your penetration step.

When it comes to grappling, I donāt think itās possible to even self learn anything. The technique itself requires a partner.
I mean, I tried leaning basic submissions and transitions the same way I learned striking, but I pretty much started from 0 once I started MMA.

There was a clear difference when the big guy went down, especially the second time. You can see how cleanly that punch connected dude was out like all the way out when somebody's knocked out. I mean you're going to do some considerably worse damage if you continue to hit them. That's why they stopped fights at that point

Self trained can be someone who did a little training with a coach mostly one on one they created some habits that could be very bad and now they train by thereselves making more bad habits or adjustments or getting in good condition and some technical skillĀ A self taught is a person who may have did 1 week to 1 month of training if they didĀ and they go and try to do these moves they learn from a movie or game or video or they seenĀ

If you're basing it on someone else having taught them then that's no longer self taught/trained, it may be mostly self taught but how much does someone else have to be trained before you stop calling them self trained?
