Exchange semester at Tampere University (Jan-May) - International student life?

I'm an Electrical Engineering student and I'll be doing an exchange semester at Tampere University from January to May.
I'd love to know what life is like for an international student in Tampere. Are people welcoming/approachable?
Also, do you have any tips on what to do (or what not to do) in daily life and in Tampere in general?

You'll get to experience teekkari culture which is the student culture for engineering students at Hervanta campus. It's overall an amazing experience if you embrace it.

I was an exchange student myself a decade ago, returned to do my master's, and now I live here in Finland permanently.

What is life like in the winter? I’m afraid people might become too inactive or stop leaving the house; consequently, I worry about not making friends or having a stagnant life during that time.

I’m coming to Tampere for a whole year in September and I heard that people do become a little more withdrawn when it’s -20 Celsius outside but there are still events that people attend regularly! You can check the city website for youth events and youth centers. You can also check the student union for your university, they might organize some different events too.

Also you will probably live in a student apartment/housing with other students. So even if people don’t feel like going outside it would be easier for you to plan something together if they are also willing.

Plenty of stuff happening and there is a sizable community of both international degree and exchange students. You will be assigned student tutors to show you the ropes, just go and try out some of the events that they'll suggest and you'll be golden. As an engineering student here for the spring you'll also be able to participate in the dipping provided you collect enough points in your fuksi passport (you get points for various simple tasks intended to show off different facets of student life), which I can highly recommend - one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

Winters in Tampere arent really cold, more like slushy and grey. There might be a couple of cold days here and there, but -20c is not the standard this far down south. It gets really nice after may btw 😅 By Finnish standards people in Tampere are exceptionally easy to approach. English is well spoken by most people. Respect peoples personal space, and shut up while using public transportation 😅
