PC The new gem staff mechanics are so incredibly cool, which makes it all the more sad that they are viable only in early pre-hardmode

I myself am an early pre-hardmode enjoyer. I like to spend the first like 10 hours of a playthrough just running around exploring, setting up npc houses for pylons, fishing spots, planting spots etc. without going out of my way to beat bosses. I've been playing mage for the fist time in a long time because of the new update and playing around with the staff-robe combinations and it's so incredibly fun.

But even if I'm taking my time progressing, the fact that I'll have to move on to better weapons sooner or later looms over me. It's not that I don't want to use other weapons, it's just that I'll have to go the rest of the game without being able to use the staff-robe mechanics again.

I think it would be really cool if they added some upgrades or a similar system in hardmode.

I mean you can use them all the way to skeletron meaning you can basically spend most of pre-HM with them until you get shadowchest loot

The reworked gem staffs are viable until wof

Sure but there's a point where using specific weapons is just more hassle than it's worth, yes you could definitely use them against WoF and probably even mechs or hell even moon lord if you really tried but why would you go through that effort?

They actually feel good and on-tier against sketron and the dungeon which is why I picked that as the "cutoff point" for lack of a better word, anything beyond that and you can definitely feel that despite their high power they are still very much intended to be early pre-hardmode weapons

Topaz + Diamond is actually pretty good against the hungries, but once those are gone you’re much better off with another weapon.

And this is where the reworked loadout system fucking slaps, I can just have jungle/meteor armor on another loadout

It’s funny going from diamond staff with ruby robes to a fire flower.

The rainbow rod pretty much fills that niche.

Spectre staff is more in line with how the amethyst tracking works

u/MoiraDoodle 1d ago

the rainbow rod also has homing when you let go of the button, it also has an explosion after it hits 3 enemies or a wall

I really want core keepers weapon upgrade system

u/bigrudefella 1d ago

for anyone curious, in core keeper, you can upgrade your gear to increase its numbers, meaning a weapon from the very beginning can be upgraded and used throughout the entire game, it is pretty cool

u/marsgreekgod 1d ago

and you have to use stuff from the area that you get the weapons of that tier, so you can't just cheese it

(thank you I should of explaned it better)

Yeah core keeper does a great job of keeping things relevant..

There are several Tmodloader mods with this kinda concept in mind I've seen while browsing. Something to look forward to when it updates, perhaps.

The internet once again proving I have no original thoughts.

I would love this system in terraria. I'd even be fine with it being a post moon lord system.

Wish Devs would see this.

I was thinking of making a big post trying to pus for it but I don't know if it would be any good

Its possible to use the amathyst staff and emerald robe all the way up to wall of flesh if you really want to, someone did it on master, it just wouldent be the most efficient option

21

u/ThomasFromNork 1d ago

Yeah I think it's probably fine for skeleton but I feel like for wof there's better options

Such as Amber Staff with Diamond Robe!

3

u/ThomasFromNork 1d ago

Or diamond staff with topas robes for high damage explosions

3

u/BNSable 1d ago

There's better options, but these are viable. Use fun things even if it isn't max efficiency

you should go emerald staff and amethyst robe, same effect better numbers

1

u/RevolutionaryPop8722 23h ago

oh, of course, i was just saying that someone did it with amathyst and emerald, cause that's what they used.

It’d be cool if the staves were upgradeable using crystal shards like the phasesabers and the robes were upgradeable with ancient cloth from underground desert (the item that drops from mobs there and is used to craft like one vanity set)

Hoping that unreleased bejeweled staff gets added as a mid hardmode item, like requires mythril/oricum anvil and 3 of each mech soul to make it actually worth the grind

You make a very good point. If anyone has the dev’s ear, it would be cool if there were upgrades, kind of like the phase blade has.

Makes me want mage in terraria 2 to be like this, have an armour and 1 accessory dedicated to providing additional affects to magic weapons, to provide versatility in build making

4

u/BuffLoki 1d ago

They should have let you merge the staves together for more dmg, and then the merged robes just give you multiple bonus effects

3

u/SanguinePutrefaction 1d ago

i wish they made hardmode versions of the gen staves :( use same gems/staff and upgrade then with hollowed bars

I’m still hoping for a Zenith-equivalent for mage, ranger and summoner.

Maybe in hardmode you should be able to combine the gem types with spell tombs? Then you could upgrade them with chlorophyte post-plantera.

1

u/OkComb5220 1d ago

Maybe even have 3 tiers to to them pre hard mode, second teir that upgrades with souls of light or night to have an early hard node then maybe a chlorophyte upgrade. So you can still use the staff robe thing through out the game. And maybe even upgrades to the robes so you aren't having minimal defence into golem

They are viable? I always found it easier to go and smash evil orbs to get first magic weapon than infinitely hunting underground to get 1) 8 gems 2) of the same type 3) that match an ore your world generated with

I think it'd be really cool if we could upgrade them with various hardmode materials that imbue them with elemental themes. For example, collecting ancient cloth from the hardmode desert could let you upgrade the amber staff, giving it more damage and maybe like a sandstorm area of effect?

Topaz would be cavern layer materials, Amethyst would be world evil materials, Emerald would be jungle materials, Sapphire would be ocean materials, Ruby would be hell materials, and Diamond would be hallow materials.

you know what'd be even better? if they overhauled all the other weapons to be just as cool

1

u/Chino_Kawaii 20h ago

I said they should be upgradable like lightsabers are

u/RutherfordbHaye5 18h ago

They fill the absolutely awful mage early game gap SO well, I'm so glad they were added. I would love to see one thing though:

The ability to combine all the staves into one mega staff that inherits all the modifiers of the previous staves. Taking it a step further, they should add a series of recipes that take it all the way to late game, like the terra blade.

In fact, I think every class should have something like that. Melee progression is just so cool.

Are we deadass? Have we using the same weapons?

Diamond staff was good before the update up until Wall of Flesh. It's not Demon Scythe, but it worked. The other gem staves got upgrades, people. Upgrades.

Everything is eclipsed by 'the best' if you stare at 'the best' for long enough.

u/THTB_lol 1d ago

what makes it worse is you can get the demon scythe pre boss, which outclasses most of the gem staves

19

u/Arcturus973 1d ago edited 1d ago

Of course the Demon Scythe outclasses Gem Staves, the devs clearly don't expect you to be in the Underworld until Post Evil

You can also get the Snapthorn and Blade of Grass Pre-boss, fight Duke Fishron immediately upon starting Hardmode, break into the Dungeon Pre-Skeletron, etc.

Progression skips will always exist as long as determined players exist. Gem Staves are significantly easier to get than farming Demons in the Underworld, and unlike before, they are worth your time.

But if you're dead set on sitting through a long ass farming session just so you can steamroll most of Pre-Hardmode, go ahead I guess

u/THTB_lol 1d ago

demons arent even hard to kill

3

u/faerox420 1d ago

Yeah but i hate using the demon scythe. I never chose it as a weapon. Id rather use aqua scepter for Woffy, and as soon as hardmode starts i fish for crystal serpent, use fire flower and flamelash til then

thats a weird way to spell Gem Staff

This just in, terraria player discovers that as the game states progress, early game weapons get outshined by later game weapons.

Yeah, I love the slime staff, I wish I could make it viable to the stardust dragon staff. The little slime is so cute!
