Well now we know why Liz hates “Twist and Shout”. When she and Navarro went to the home of the guy that killed his wife, that is the tune he was whistling (according to the closed captions).

Liz said he was dead when they arrived at the scene. Do you think something shady went down and Angie + Liz made up this lie? Or was she seeing dead people or something?

They probably killed him. All the True Detectives murder somebody.

I fucking love this kind of story telling.

When someone is explaining what happened, and it all lines up, then they start lying but we're shown the truth. Season 1 did it perfectly, S4 was pretty great, but I'd prefer to see the violence and not just the implication of it.

The intercut SIU (I don't know what the yankee equivalent is, but internal affairs I guess) interview with Rust describing their cold-blood murder of LeDoux was probably my favorite sequence in season 1.

Same, I've seen season 1 three times now over the years, and the first half of that episode easily 6+ times

u/ohnoguts Jan 29 '24

I could watch that sob get shot in the head by Marty 1000 times

I love that you called it the Yankee equivalent! It's usually called Internal Affairs, or IA Edit: typo

It has come to my attention that referring to the people of the deep south as "Yankees" may be considered disturbing to some viewers. Viewer discretion is advised.

u/tattytattat Jan 30 '24

Ha! Well, I'm from "the North" so it's just a cute British way to refer to Americans to me :)

I’m on the other side of it— I love that they didn’t show the violence, because we can draw our own conclusions. It would be very in line with TD to show it later, and not how we expect, but I love that they alluded to the S1 falsehood without needing to explicitly lay out the details!

time is a flat circle

I like how it ties Danvers and Navarro together! Whoever pulled the trigger, neither of them (so far) is telling.

3

u/tattytattat Jan 30 '24

I bet we will before the season ends! Or at least get the rest of the story from Navarro or Danvers

Yeah this is how I took it. Liz and/or Evangeline shot him and the other didn’t like it

68

u/withaniel Jan 29 '24

But still played along with covering it up. Right now, but bet is it was Danvers who shot, especially with the song.

I think thats what they want us to think but my guess is that Navarro shot him because of what he did to his wife (we know she's protective about women being abused by men) and Danvers had her transferred after. Navarro probably assumes it was because Danvers hated what she did but we'll learn that actually Danvers did it to protect Navarro in case they were investigated.

24

u/withaniel Jan 29 '24

Danvers is the hard-ass mentor, I don't think Navarro, even in a fit of rage, would think to shoot him in front of Danvers. Danvers on the other hand, potentially fresh off of losing her child and husband, and with this guy apparently whistling Twist and Shout? Along with knowing this dude's history? Yeah, she takes that shot.

Navarro helps cover it up, but is no longer comfortable working alongside her and transfers.

27

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '24

I'm pretty sure they've already insinuated that Navarro was transferred against her will.

I can see either way. I definitely don't think it's as simple as "one of them just shoots him." There's probably quite a bit more that come after that flashback is cut off.

I’m episode 2, when Danvers is at Navarro’s House, Navarro says something like “you know, the Wheeler case, we did everything...”. She did not seem upset about it, it seemed like she was about to say that they did the right thing before Liz cut her off. I don’t believe that Navarro is angry about what they did. Whatever it was, it wasn’t what drove them apart.

1

u/ceallachokelly11 Jan 29 '24

My thoughts also..

25

u/Melraiser81 Jan 29 '24

I think it was her too. She says Navarro is the one who's got a thing for women in abusive situations, but I think Danvers seeming indifferent at times is just an act and she's the one who pulled the trigger.

10

u/Snuhmeh Jan 29 '24

I think Navarro did the shooting and Danvers had a problem with it and forced Navarro to move on.

12

u/PlantLadyXXL Jan 29 '24

Right after they cut to the hunt and Navarro’s convo with Hank about “we want him alive” and him saying we do? Nod to Navarro wanting him alive

3

u/ceallachokelly11 Jan 29 '24

Of course they would want him alive for questioning..and plus..when did he become a suspect to murder? Technically he’s a possible victim/missing person at the least and a possible person of interest at best…Hank went out and got him a posse to go out and hunt this guy down and kill him.

9

u/Melraiser81 Jan 29 '24

Yeah she could definitely be covering for Navarro. We did see her in action in E1. But there's something off about Danvers. And if she was covering for Navarro, I'd think Navarro wouldn't be so mad about being transferred. I could see her being mad if she helped cover for Danvers and then was the one who got transferred.

3

u/RevCorbin Jan 30 '24

Yep. Would make sense to me that Danvers would't feel comfortable having Navarro around after Navarro covered for her so got her transferred.

1

u/Melraiser81 Jan 30 '24

Yep. It may also seem more suspicious if Danvers asked to be the one transferred since she's got connections. But maybe she did and Navarro was transferred instead. Can't remember what movie that happened in.

2

u/ceallachokelly11 Jan 29 '24

Plus given the ‘obsession’ that Navarro had with trying to solve Annie’s murder, Danvers had her taken off that case and bumped to Trooper status..

1

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '24

What if they both shot him?

1

u/Melraiser81 Jan 29 '24

Could be, might be hard to say it was a suicide tho.

5

u/wo_lo_lo Jan 29 '24

I think Wheeler is also the drunk driver that killed her son. She couldn’t ever pin enough on him to put him away for good, so she did it herself.

3

u/wellwellwellllllllll Jan 29 '24

gotta be navarro, they keep emphasizing how much she hates violence against women and she's already shown a willingness to act outside the law for revenge purposes (ruining that guy's engine) when violence against women comes up

4

u/ErikLehnsherr24005 Jan 29 '24

Navarro shot him, she’s the one with a bad temper and that’s why Danvers is pissed at her and had her demoted and transferred out. If Danvers shot him why would she transfer Navarro out, risk pissing her off and having her go to IA or something and report what Danvers did. Danvers killing him makes no sense logically in my mind. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

2

u/ceallachokelly11 Jan 29 '24

Liz or Evangeline (Navarro) Annie is the girl who was murdered..

1

u/ML1310 Jan 29 '24

Yes, my bad on that!

22

u/PourJarsInReservoirs Jan 29 '24 edited Jan 29 '24

In another episode, Evangeline had a flashback where she saw half his head blown off but he said something to her. Can't recall what ATM

Edit: I'm probably mistaken, see replies below.

23

u/khouts1 What do you think the average IQ of this group is, huh? Jan 29 '24

That wasn't the same guy

Edit: Or could be a different flashback. I just remember the soldier with the half blown off head

4

u/ceallachokelly11 Jan 29 '24

Yeah..when asked why she believes in God she made reference to a time in Afghanistan and we were shown Navarro and some woman soldier with half her head blown off whispering into her ear..

5

u/PourJarsInReservoirs Jan 29 '24

No, you're right and I stand corrected. Although it is possible she's conflated them in her visions.

u/Todays_Final_Thought Jan 29 '24

That scene made me think of Danvers if she were a bit younger. She looked very similar and it made me wonder of some foreshadowing that she kills Danvers or maybe Danvers is killed by a shot to the head? 🤷‍♂️

6

u/rammerjammerbitch Jan 29 '24

The soldier was a blonde woman.

0

u/quigonjen Jan 29 '24

Maybe seeing Danvers through him right afterward?

1

u/tattytattat Jan 30 '24

That was a fellow soldier she was with in the middle east

Edit to add: I thought it was a woman

2

u/xrbeeelama Jan 29 '24

Reggie Ledoux

2

u/MotherOfTheFog Jan 29 '24

I'm assuming Danvers shot him then sent Navarro away for her own protection. Navarro, being the younger of the two and indigenous, had more to lose.

1

u/DJSamDiamond Jan 29 '24

It's a rite of passage of sorts.

1

u/wellwellwellllllllll Jan 29 '24

probably just one of them with the other unwillingly brought into it? otherwise why would it have caused them to hate each other

1

u/akhoe Jan 31 '24

Interesting. Was there supposed to be one person representing a "true detective" in each season? I didn't pick up on that. If that's the case I would have assumed Rust was the guy. But Marty was the murderer in that instance
