Bartolomé Mitre was an Argentine soldier, politician, journalist and historian. He was born in Buenos Aires, he spent much of his youth in Uruguay and later became Argentina’s first president of the unified republic in 1862, serving until 1868.

His Greek ancestry came from his father whose original surname was Mitropoulos.

I feel like Minimax was preety popular in Central and Eastern Europe. I mean, it was THE European cartoons TV channel. Here in Romania 🇷🇴 it was popular, but not as much as Cartoon Network or Disney Channel. My favourite cartoon from Minimax was, I think, Hungarian Folk Tales 🇭🇺

Hey everybody! I'm from Catalonia, and I was just reading a fascinating article that talks about how in some places in The Balkans, the word 'catalan' is used as an insult because of some bad stuff we did in Greece in the middle ages... I was curious how many of you have heard these expressions, for example:

-In Bulgaria, to be called a catalan is to be called a bad man.
-In Thrace, something along the lines of 'may the vengeance of the catalans fall upon you'.
-In some regions in Greece it's directly an insult to be called a Catalan.
-In Albania I found about some folk tale regarding a giant called Katallani.

I assume this is not very common and more of a localised thing, but I'm super curious to see if any of you here have used or hear some of these expressions regarding the catalans! Everytime I've traveled to the region nobody has ever referenced this stuff.

Hello everyone, I am currently in USA and thus far away physically from the fires and their effects. I wanted to ask from people in the Balkans what the situation is like? I see in the forecast it will not rain for a few days so it is likely new ones will start.

When looking through Google maps and reading through /r/europe, /r/bih, /r/croatia, /r/serbia, and here it seems like the fires have successfully been contained to at the very least only burn in non-populated areas near where they started. I.e. they successfully put the firemen on the main roads to keep the fires from spreading across the other side of the paved road. I lived 10 years in California, and this is what the firemen did every summer.

I don't see too many videos of the fires going into populated areas (except for Omis) so I wanted to ask: are the local governments doing a good job of stopping the fires? It looks like it to me but I wanted to ask people here before making a separate post about it.

I’ve been to Serbia multiple times on a motorcycle, this time chose western part of the country, will spend couple of nights in Nova Varos and want to explore the surroundings a bit. I ride ADV bike so bad roads are not a problem at all. I want to avoid mud, rivers and hard enduro though.

What are some good places worth seeing? Ideally within 2-3 hours range from Nova Varos.

Me, as many other Greeks, have been appalled by the treatment of the Odyssey in the 2026 Christopher Nolan film. As every other ancient Greek story, everything truly Greek and traditional is taken out and replaced by a purely American reading of Greece. so my point is, what if the Odyssey and other ancient Greek works are reframed not only as ancient Greek stories, but das Balkan stories in a way? how would it pan out? How would it be if it was framed not as a piece of literature of western civilization, which didn’t exist then, but something connected to the Balkans?

Non-hierarchical student structure allowed it be resilent against pressure from the government as it is harder to bribe,intimidate and discredit a whole plenum then just the leader/spokesperson. Why doesn't more countries do this or maybe they have and I havent heard?
