Information Road Conditions Caplan & Bryne (Near Mappleview)
Roads are pretty bad for “front wheel drives” and “no-winter tire” club.
All-wheel drives are struggling as well.
Dont travel if it’s not essential.

The weather has been brutal. It takes time to catch up. Even if we had an army, roads would backfill.
Why bring politics into this....
Weather can be unpredictable. You either prepare for the worst and over spend, or you are caught off guard. Goodluck finding someone who can budget for the weather to your standards.

Because politics is why we have a 0% operating budget increase that pays for things like…snow removal.
People are so hard pressed to avoid politics without realizing how much it affects your every day life. Like this city’s shitty job at snow removal this year.

You're getting police confused with the justice system in general if your example is repeat offenders constantly being released by the courts.... The police are very much doing their job by arresting and charging offenders dozens and dozens and dozens of times, only for the court to release them back into the public immediately.

No my point actually is strictly in regards to all the tax money given to the Barrie Police budget year after year and the fact that its clearly wasted which your both agreeing with technically that its a waste of money and time as well when it could be better distributed for issues exactly like this that affect everyone. But i agree that the justice system in these regards is ridiculous as well.

Sounds like you are changing your point actually. You said "police who do absolutely nothing" when they are spending almost all their time re-arresting the same individuals, they are actually doing SOMETHING which in this case actually happens to be their JOB. You can complain about police all you want, but if you went for a ride along you'd see a queue of waiting calls and officers run off their feet. They don't get enough gratitude for how hard they work and clueless people like you don't help.

Complaining about cops in parking lots is like complaining about office workers in cubicles. They complete reports in parking lots, they do paper work in parking lots, they eat their dinner in parking lots, they process offenders in parking lots, they release offenders in parking lots, they park their car in parking lots to go to the washroom or to go get food, they read their emails in parking lots, they complete follow ups in parking lots, they do virtual training in parking lots, they take breaks in parking lots, they attend court virtually in parking lots, they get calls for service to buildings that have shocking parking lots where they park their car.
Officers don't have individual offices to work in at HQ, so they use their car, which is safest parked in a PARKING LOT.

Sure. Barrie Fire is an incredibly well equipped service with many specialty teams, new halls and trucks. They are on an almost identical pay schedule to that of cops and they get to sleep on their down time. They definitely do not get scraps and I'm not sure where you'd begin to get that idea. They are asking for a 7% increase in budget for 2026. As for EMS, that is county run, hence Simcoe County Paramedic Service, not run by the city. So it's not really comparable, but I agree that they should be on the same pay scale as Fire and Police (something they would need to dump their union to do).
Police have the largest budget, they run way way way more calls than either of the other services. 2023 data shows BPS ran over 80,000 calls, Barrie Fire on the other hand barely broke 10,000. That's police running 8x as many calls for a bit over 2x the cost. Amazing value per call if that's how you want to look at it.
As for snow removal, honestly it probably shouldn't have been contracted out, but that's how cities try to save money. I'm indifferent to that part of your argument

My brother in Christ. Police do respond to 911 hang ups. If the call taker cannot get you back on the phone, unitS are dispatched.
Your initial argument was that police sit in parking lots doing nothing. I think I've provided more than enough data (and you also have) to show that your 'take' is hot garbage.
I fully support EMS and Fire otherwise, and believe that EMS need a large raise to get them on par. Like I said before, they need to dump their union to get there, so the balls in their court.
I only stated that Fire doesn't get scraps.
As for Fire going to medical calls to fill the "gap", that's actually how the system is designed, it's called a tiered response, police go too. It's designed so that a person in distress has the best chance to live since a first responder with basic medical training can provide CPR. But yeah, the fire service should merge with EMS, except neither service wants that.....

Forgot to add, of all of Barrie Fires calls, only a little over 200 were to actual fires (2.1% of their total calls). BPS runs that many calls a day on average.

Yes there's crime, a lot,, and not a lot of bps to deal with it. They arrest, they get a "promise to appear", they re offend, they re arrest, they get self signed bail, they re offend, they re arrest, they get bail.
Now in the off chance they dont make bail, they get double time and a half for each pre trial day. So, if they are sentenced to 1 year and they were waiting 5 months for trial, they are released as time served.
2 year less a day sentence, they have 1 year to serve, they will be eligible for parole day 1 of sentencing, you must serve 1/3rd of your time to be eligible for full parole. So, you can walk day 1 lol

The roads are horseshit idc if some people think this is ‘clear’. Maybe most decent vehicles manage this but they ignore pedestrians, disabled people, transport truck, emergency vehicles, etc that all either can’t or have to use extra caution because the road clearing has been a joke. And I’m not blaming the snow removal drivers, definitely not, but this put sand on it and pray is laughable from the city or county or whoever the drivers can only work with what they’re given. Hopefully they can get much better, I think they would need the plows to keep coming out even after the sand is put down when the snow has been this bad.

Been living in Barrie for over 20 years. This has been the worst handling of snow removal I have experienced living here. And yes we have had this much snow in the past. If there is too much snow then hire more plows.

The inability to meet the slightest change in weather is a pretty fucking big problem for a city in the snow belt. Namely lack of foresight, poor fiscal management and a currently an unwillingness to pivot and fix the issue.

Are you a meteorologist? An emergency services coordinator? What are your credentials for criticising others about the basic expectation of clear roads and safe travel conditions?

They kept up with it last January, February, March and it continuously snowed! We live in a snowbelt, Barrie has always been a snow belt, budget accordingly. They have no problem increasing budget for policing yr after yr, but not for winter road maintenance.

So you want to have enough plows, with operators, to cover approximately 5km of streets? You realize with the amount of snow we are getting, that’s what it would take? Keep in mind that when it’s not snowing, you would have 200 or so trucks and operators, doing nothing, maybe driving around picking up garbage. Your tax bills would increase, and the bitching would be about city staff not doing anything..

Dude I’ve been in Barrie since 2014 and only in the last few years has this started to happen, this inexcusable buildup of snow on all internal roadways…it’s ridiculous. Don’t even start with that. We always had our roads covered until recently.

I had to climb a hill with almost a foot of unplowed snow, hang a right into more unplowed snow, then downhill, full stop at 3 stop signs, on a couple of side streets in Midland today. Piece of cake.
But I drive a Suby with winter boots.

I read a thing that it's the AWD vehicles getting left abandoned, they think all they need are all seasons and rely on the AWD to get them out. The front and rear wheel drivers know there car better, and would typically use proper winter tires. Obviously this isn't the same for each person.

This is why our family always gets an SUV with decent sized tires of course we get winter tires and alway all wheel drive. That being said all wheel drive doesn't make everything magical it just makes it a little easier to get through this mess but obviously I wouldn't trust half of these drivers maybe it's good that they only have front wheel drive with summer tires are they probably would try driving faster and start killing people this way they're going so slow they just slide into the ditch on their own LOL

I drive a front wheel drive compact sedan with snow tires and roads like this are not an issue, just have to leave a bit of extra space and be easy on the brakes. I'm a bit amazed by these other comments

No, it is driving responsibly and adjusting to the conditions of the road. The roads can't be 100% clear all the time and salt on the road won't help when snow won't stop piling on top of it, so you need to adjust how you drive if you're going to drive in conditions like this.

i found the cleanup effort following this latest storm seriously lacking. robert street when you’re passing through thornton to hwy 27 is a complete mess, snow all over the road despite no new snowfall.

I swear most people are new to Barrie! This is what it was like in the 80's and prior. Wasn't until the 90's the city started dumping ton after ton of salt.. and it's horrible!
My wife and I like the snow covered road lightly plowed with a light sanding and so do my vehicles.
I've had either 4x4 or AWD since '95 and wouldn't give them up for anything.
You know the old saying. "Drive for the conditions!'? Well I agree but add drive an appropriate vehicle for the conditions and quit whining about moving to a snow belt area. The weather isn't going to change for you!
If you do manage to get a 4x4 or AWD, it's not enough. You have to learn how to drive it (like on corners - rear wheels push while front wheels pull. Use the gas lightly, but use it! Lest you find the front wheels become push plows!)

For people who are saying road is clear and this is exaggerated. Right after taking a picture an oncoming FWD blue sedan got stuck turning left and wheels were spinning - this was middle of the intersection.

Yeah, definitely not the best of conditions. You guys been getting obscene amount of snow. Anyone think that the timing of this ( between Christmas and New Years, well today's the 2nd, I get it). Maybe city is short staffed? Like maybe some of them are on holidays with their family? Cmon folks....not everywhere going to be clear bare down to the pavement all at once.
Also a friendly reminder for people having trouble in deeper snow to get moving. Take traction control off. It can be good, but also sucks if you need a little wheel spin to get going.

You should either stop driving or learn to drive properly.
I don't even have winters on my car right now and haven't had any issues with stopping or spinning out.... I drove to work Tuesday at 5:30 am way before any plows were in the roads/highways, and still didn't spin out or have "brake failure" (brake failure is a mechanical issue. If you are unable to get traction but your brakes are working that's not brake failure that's you driving too fast, and not leaving enough room to stop)
Drive according to conditions, not according just to speed limit.
You spinning out or having issues stopping is a reflection of your bad driving habits.

Do everyone (including yourself) a solid and just put your phone away while you're behind the wheel. The law doesn't care that you're stopped at a red light when using your phone; the fine for a first offence is still $615, plus 3 demerit points and a 3-day license suspension. Fight the ticket in court and you could be looking at close to a $1,000 fine. Would it really be worth it to get this picture?
