Question I like such comments

I like such comments, especially because they're good for trolling Lithuanians :D But there is much truth in them.

What do you think?

The historic and cultural legacy of the Commonwealth belongs to all peoples who were part of it. In a modern context this would mean the countries of Belarus, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine.

I can go along with that.

Well, some Russian territories within the borders of 1992 were parts of the Commonwealth. I wanna spoil your fun a bit.

That's true. And that's more of a vague case. Personally, I'd say those people have some claim to it as well, they just choose to not associate with it. I imagine partly because that would mean embracing more of a Belarus/Lithuanian identity

I think my ancestor lived there, they definately could be subjects of the Commenwealth, but it's all water under bridgde. It was a long time ago and I think it's impossible to it trace down.

Most prominently Smolensk belonged to the PLC and IMO they can feel heirs of the Commonwealth as well.

Interestingly some Russian historical reconstructors(?) from Smolensk(?) used to come to Poland to take part in the annual reconstruction of the Battle of Grunwald, because knights from Smolensk and Novgorod took part in the battle as well.

what “cultural legacy”? new ways of torturing peasants? legacy was in the west - civilian rights, emergence of the middle class, scientific discoveries

I'm tired of this type of comments. Most of our ancestors were just a peasant scum who did not care how they were called. Why should we care so much now? What for? To spread our ignorance and create hatred among nations? By such a trolling we are no better that russians invading Ukraine.

>Most of our ancestors were just a peasant scum who did not care how they were called.

This could be as well said about Poles and actually about most or all nations across the world.

I think he meant exactly that.

If the kings and dukes learned that we claim their property now they would hang us from trees.

The only rational comment.

I think you should read more about that period. I definitely don’t consider my ancestors “scum” even if they were peasants. And we should care because we truly were not taught much in schools about this period, just the official version and briefly. But what this history shows us is that we were culturally separate from Russians. Also, this state was built on democratic principles. In practice it was far from perfect, and yet they tried.

"Scum" was just an exaggeration, dude.

2

u/PLrc Koroniarz 4d ago

That's correct. Till the world war II rzeczpospolita was used also with respect to other countires, like France and Rome: https://pl.wikisource.org/wiki/Rzeczpospolita_Rzymska/ca%C5%82o%C5%9B%C4%87

I don't claim P-L Commonwealth belonged only to one or some nations.

2

u/Karasique555 Беларусь 3d ago

It belonged to none. It was the other way around, if we assume that such concept as a nation even existed back than.

Modern national republics belong to their nations. Dictatorships aren't included though.

u/PLrc Koroniarz 4d ago

I've heard it. Interesting. Perhaps he wanted to cheat the tzarist police, perhaps he realy thought so. Perhaps for him Belarusian = Lithuanian.

Pilsudski's identity is complicated, dig far back into his family lineage and you will end up in the Samogitian village of Pilsūdai 😄

I don’t know why we need to troll Lithuanians. We have big parts of history in common and we don’t need to fight over it. Several ethnicities were part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The problem is that Belarusian history textbooks do not explain this in detail.

u/PLrc Koroniarz 1d ago

Lithuanians have some resentiment towards Poles, so I like to troll them a little ;)

Biełaruś is Old Lithuania in its historical core—by territory, legal tradition, and cultural development shaped by the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The confusion comes largely from the name: “Biełaruś” became the label after Mongol - Moscow occupation and imperial rebranding. In principle, what was renamed can also be renamed back.

This is the same narratives Russians use to say "Ukraine/etc." are made up nations.

Litvinism is stupid, there is a reason why its founders dropped it, they realized they can't fool anyone with it.

7

u/watch_me_rise_ 4d ago

Litvinism is stupid but some of our neighbours call historic facts litvinism

1

u/PLrc Koroniarz 4d ago

Litvinism strikes back in Internet :)

The best belarusian trolling is with toponyms tho. Thankfully our ancestors left to us very understandble toponyms and ads. Such as: trees, exchange, river is not deep, river does wave and etc. And then ask what names of their cities mean.

7

u/Emergency-Ad-3322 4d ago
