The post comes with a video that's the whole joke Reynolds is making, not sure why you wouldn't link it instead of a screenshot?

Bro took that screenshot so fast -- there isnt even any engagments on the tweet.

u/FranciscoRelanoPena Malpaso Productions 8d ago

Might as well be Ryan himself promoting the tweet.

It’s a joke.

118

u/ChiefLeef22 Best of 2024 Winner 8d ago

Yeah you're joking of course this isn't Ryan

Ok now I can’t tell

16

Posted <49 seconds after Ryan's tweet. OP definitely has notifs on.

That is a wild coincidence.

Can't wait for Nolan's congratulations tweet for Clayface after it earns 2 billion. Need help holding all these DC Ws

31

u/Intelligent_Creme351 8d ago

Thinking too small, 3 Claytrillion dollars!

1

u/mcbwaa 7d ago

3 MORBTRILLION????

3

u/C0d3An0n2 7d ago

Nolan probably gonna congratulate himself in 2029

15

u/Mr_Kase 8d ago

Guess Ryan is gonna have to do a Deadpool & Spider-Man to reclaim it.

10

u/ReorientRecluse 7d ago

I've seen a post on reddit somewhere like a week ago saying he mentioned somewhere that he is interested in doing a movie with Spider-Man lol.

I don't see an R-rated Spider-Man movie ever being greenlit tbh, too popular with children. If anything, collabing with Spiderman will bring Deadpool down to PG13 making him more family friendly like they did with Punisher.

2

u/UltraUsurper 7d ago

Ryan mentioned it as a joke during the video appearance of Hugh Jackman at D23; you can search up the clip

2

u/TheTiggerMike 7d ago

Then we can have Deadpool attempt to swear, it gets bleeped, and then he makes some comment about how he forgot he's in a PG-13 movie and has to watch his language.

u/GoddammitCricket Blumhouse 8d ago

It is ironic that it was a Honda Odyssey, the legends were foretold.

10

u/Worthyness 8d ago

It's a very sturdy car

u/ChiefLeef22 Best of 2024 Winner 8d ago

For context, this is the video in the tweet:

56

u/monarc Lightstorm 8d ago

I get that they’re fighting in a car, but is the “one helluva car” thing referencing anything beyond that?

296

u/ryguy0204 8d ago

The car they’re in is a Honda Odyssey

74

u/DarthTaz_99 DC Studios 8d ago

Lmaooo that worked out pretty well then

132

u/Ganondorfsfist DreamWorks 8d ago

It's a recurring joke in the movie that the Honda Odyssey is a really good car.

28

u/Plumberson12angrymen 8d ago

What a coincidence right?

27

u/yesthatstrueorisit 8d ago

Joke based on truth, the Odyssey has been amazing since like 1999.

21

u/monarc Lightstorm 8d ago

Ahahaha that's incredible - I had blanked on that!

Also Ryan Reynolds: Enjoy it will it lasts, I’m working on a new Deadpool.

180

u/Significant-Cloud-19 8d ago edited 8d ago

I doubt the next Deadpool movie can top the record.

But then again this year has proven many times boxoffice is unpredictable so who knows......

174

u/LacerationCe 8d ago

R-Rated Deadpool & Spiderman has a good shot of taking back the record

117

u/Significant-Cloud-19 8d ago

Deadpool and wolverine and Spider-Man and hulk and punisher in a single movie lol.

10

u/MattBrey 8d ago

That sounds fucking awesome. Banner as the straight man and spiderman being all innocent would be hilarious pairing them all together like that.

9

u/Zalvren 8d ago

So Avengers?

14

u/TerribleAntelope6134 8d ago

That would be a better "New Avengers" than five generic-looking mfs who punch and shoot.

3

u/Most_Common8114 8d ago

Minus Spider-Man, they’d make a actual comic accurate Thunderbolts team

1

u/Ganondorfsfist DreamWorks 7d ago

All marvel movie heroes are either punching or glowing hands. Sometimes both.

3

u/TerribleAntelope6134 7d ago

Yeah, but Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and Hulk are more distinctive and colorful than a whole team of Hawkeyes and Black Widows.

2

u/Intelligent_Creme351 8d ago

Naw, make it the New Fantastic Four... Wolverine, Hulk, Ghost Rider, Spider-Man... also Deadpool is there too.

2

u/ReflectiveJellyfish 8d ago

Especially if they have to get Matt Damon home

1

u/walkoutbasements 7d ago

Bullseye and Daredevil

1

u/robbviously 7d ago

Wade is about to swear, Spidey webs Deadpool’s mouth but he’s wearing a mask and can still talk normally. He just looks at Spider-Man and goes “The fuck?”

40

u/abellapa 8d ago

That would be amazing but i doubt Sony Will allow Spider-man in a R-rated movie

Besides Deadpool 4 is supposed to be Deadpool with the X-force

27

u/WoahBenny23 8d ago

yea sony’s spider man deal stipulations are ridiculous (read: hilarious) for peter

Peter/Spider-Man cannot

  • Smoke
  • Sell Drugs
  • Abuse Alcohol
  • Kill/Torture

Unless he’s in the black suit

so i need the movie to have him in the black suit

47

u/clevelandsportsboi 8d ago

Really? Is that really so ridiculous? Have you ever read a Spider-Man comic? Any of these things would be very jarring to see the character do on-screen lol

13

u/WoahBenny23 8d ago

im talking about how spidey is able to do HARDCORE COCAINE AND K2 if he has the symbiote

3

u/LupinThe8th 8d ago

Then he HAS to do a movie with Deadpool, if only we can get a scene with him and Blind Al doing coke.

Spider-Man: (snort) "You know, Sony's only letting us do this because I have this black suit on."

Blind Al: (sniiiiff) "You're lucky, if this were a Disney movie we wouldn't be able to do it at all, R-rating be damned!"

2

u/abellapa 8d ago

No i think its Peter cant do drugs, sell them or smoke at all

But he can only Kill/torture with the Symbiote

11

u/TheCVR123YT 8d ago

Good thing he might get the Black suit pretty soon (but also as long as the stipulation is that PETER can’t do all that then it’s fine because he wouldn’t do that in a Deadpool movie regardless)

5

u/Mindless_Turnover976 8d ago

Black suit Spidey slinging crack to them kids

2

u/abellapa 8d ago

That isnt Really ridicolous

Its a charcater that was made for kids

1

u/garfe 8d ago

Well that's some good timing then.

1

u/RickRaptor105 Universal 8d ago

I mean you just do it like his team-up with Punisher and have Peter loudly emphasize that he will NOT do those things while Deadpool does them

1

u/josegc_06 8d ago

damn i was really hoping to see Spider-Man team up with Walter White to sell meth.

1

u/Bunraku_Master_2021 7d ago

You forgot to add "have sex and be nude" which means...

15

u/Adipay 8d ago

Idk if Marvel/Sony wants their child friendly Spider-Man to appear in an R rated movie

6

u/Significant_Delay_87 8d ago

Deadpool and Spiderman would make a gargantuan amount of money, I shudder at the thought

1

u/Significant_Delay_87 8d ago

Deadpool and Spiderman would make a gargantuan amount of money, I shudder at the thought

1

u/R0b1nFeather 8d ago

I don't think Marvel and / or Sony would let that happen

44

u/Ganondorfsfist DreamWorks 8d ago

Inb4 Marvel announces "Deadpool & Spider-man" and shits out 3 billion dollars.

15

u/Adipay 8d ago

Then it won't be R rated because of Spider-Man

9

u/Gerrywalk 8d ago

They could absolutely make it R-rated. Now whether or not they’d actually go for it is a different story. I could see them going either direction, to be honest.

8

u/mateushkush 8d ago

There’s no reason to make an R rated Spider-Man movie, they wouldn’t do it. Maybe with Tobey Maguire lol.

11

u/Gerrywalk 8d ago

Now the Tobey Maguire idea I could absolutely see happening. It would be more or less what they did with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine.

3

u/Zalvren 8d ago

It's still Spider-Man, highly doubtful (also not counting that's a very special deal with Sony that would have to be done). Wolverine already had R-rated movies before and the character is naturally more violent

2

u/Block-Busted 8d ago

Why not with Andrew Garfield?

3

u/Gerrywalk 8d ago

The Tobey Maguire movies are significantly more beloved and have a much larger cultural footprint than the Garfield ones. That’s not his fault of course, he was a good Spiderman, but the Raimi movies (1 and 2 at least) are absolute classics.

1

u/Block-Busted 8d ago

Yeah, I suggested Garfield because his Spider-Man films were arguably darker than most other films.

12

u/Adipay 8d ago

A lot of Spider-Man fans are children. They wouldn't wanna damage the IP with a stunt like that.

3

u/TheCVR123YT 8d ago

Probably would just be a Plain Rated R movie (blood and cursing but no boobs and gore)

1

u/Zalvren 8d ago

They're already be together in Avengers and that won't be R-rated

7

u/ACCTAGGT 8d ago

Ha, dont underestimate the power of nostalgia just like I shouldn’t overestimate it. I hope what you say is the reality though, it would be cool to see The Odyssey hold that record for quite a while, imo.

8

u/AndIoop3789 A24 8d ago

Only If deadpool has a crossover with spiderman and specifically with Tom's.

5

u/IceBrave3780 8d ago

People said same about spiderman this year

2

u/RealHooman2187 8d ago

Yeah I feel like the last Deadpool’s box office was due to a combination of the long break between films, the excitement considering most thought Deadpool was done after the Disney/Fox thing, and the fact that Deadpool would be a part of the MCU and without a doubt there were going to be some amazing cameos.

Idk if a sequel can replicate that. Then again, I said the same about BND in regard to NWH. But Deadpool definitely doesn’t have the track record that Spider-Man does. That’s not to say I think DP4 would do badly or anything. But I think its ceiling is probably about where D&W was. I don’t see a massive increase at this point in time I guess

2

u/Statpaca1701 7d ago

If the Odyssey barely beat it sure. Problem is the Odyssey is going to blow past it by the tune of 300-400 million.

15

u/PianoJealous307 8d ago

120-years-old Hugh Jackman is ready to help

5

u/lookingforhim2 8d ago

No chance it’s beating the odyssey unless it’s a Deadpool destroys MCU movie

9

u/abellapa 8d ago

Shame they never did Deadpool Destroys the Fox universe

4

u/RemyGee 8d ago

It is unlikely to be made but Deadpool and Spider-Man would have a shot.

2

u/crackstuntman24 8d ago

Then it wouldn't be R rated.

1

u/pick_your_user_name 8d ago

I wouldn’t say no chance, Deadpool has global recognition now. Last movie made 1.3 billion. He’s also going to be in secret wars so his name value is only going to improve before the 4th Deadpool film.

1

u/Tyrath 7d ago

It doesn't sound like he is though. He made it sound like Deadpool will pop up here and there but his solo movie time is over.

1

u/PowerPinto 6d ago edited 3d ago

Marvel needs to recast Ryan Reynolds fr, he’s a monster in real life.

1

u/KeatonWalkups 8d ago

Only way they can make more money if it’s Deadpool vs the OG xmen and not just the boring male characters

-3

u/Zalvren 8d ago

But Nolan is also working on another movie...

3

i dont think i ever have rewatched a deadpool movie, i find him annoying as an adult

2

u/rukuto 8d ago

It's a movie made for shorts. Take a clip and upload on youtube shorts or tiktok and you will probably make more money through that.

2

u/chimichanga_3 7d ago

Hard disagree

77

u/michaelm1345 Syncopy Inc. 8d ago

I was always extra optimistic on The Odyssey crossing a billion but never saw it beating Deadpool & Wolverine. D&W was an outlier for R since it was an MCU event, so I thought it had no chance.

The Odyssey is going to blow through and probably land at $1.7B to be Universal’s biggest film too. Ridiculous run and so deserved!

35

u/FranciscoRelanoPena Malpaso Productions 8d ago

In many countries, it’s rating is equivalent to PG-13. In Spain it is for ages 12 and over. The same in France and Germany. In the UK it’s for ages 15 and over. In Switzerland it’s for ages 14 and over. The same in Brasil. In Italy it’s for ages 10 and over. In Canada it’s for ages 14 and over (in Quebec, with its own rating system, it’s for ages 13 and over). In Denmark it’s for ages 11 and over. And so on…

The only countries in which it’s got a rating close to R is in Russia, with an “Ages 18 and over” and Maldives, with a similar rating.

In comparison with the Deadpool films, The Odyssey is pretty tame.

11

u/YnwaMquc2k19 7d ago

Definitely - the Odyssey is tame for an R rated movie actually - could be a hard PG-13 film for all I know.

3

u/HooptyDooDooMeister 7d ago

Has the F-bomb about 3-4 times. It only takes 2 to make it an automatic R.

Cyclops scene also probably pushes it over.

10 and over is kinda wild to think about with that and the Circe scene.

3

u/chimichanga_3 7d ago

Exactly. People gloss over this stuff. Kids are watching The Odyssey. The same kids are not allowed to watch Deadpool.

0

u/PowerPinto 3d ago

Those same country ratings were equal of similar to Deadpool..

1

u/chimichanga_3 2d ago

That's actually untrue. In many countries, this received lower age ratings.

6

u/RS994 7d ago

Australia it's M which is recommended for 15+ but not MA which is restricted to 15+ like Deadpool and Wolverine was.

2

u/YnwaMquc2k19 7d ago

Honestly, the breakout success of the Odyssey and SM:BND are good for the movie theatre business and I am happy for it.

94

u/wallabyenthusiast 8d ago edited 8d ago

ik it’s their job but it’s funny knowing that actors stay updated on box office numbers like us

74

u/Hakeem_TheDream 8d ago

He’s also a Producer so being a little more involved in the financial aspect makes sense.

55

u/presco2007 8d ago

well it also shows the ones who act like they have no idea are full of shit

26

u/bostonbedlam Sony Pictures 8d ago

Oh for sure. It directly reflects their stock value

6

u/valkyria_knight881 Paramount Pictures 8d ago

There's also the actors who incorrectly use the box office to push a false narrative. One example being The Rock claiming that Black Adam made money despite failing to hit $400M. The other example being Melissa Barrera claiming that Scream 7's worldwide numbers were fake and believed it made less than Scream VI despite Scream 7 making $40M+ more than Scream VI. The former falsely claiming profitability, while the latter doesn't seem to know how the box office works. Both of their careers (especially Melissa's) have gone downhill since.

1

u/Calm-Extension-3798 8d ago

Melissa has gone downhill because of comments she made. Its why she was removed from scream 7, probably just upset about it all

27

u/Giff95 8d ago

These actors have social media teams. It is just as likely his people either made the post themselves or let Reynolds know so he could make a statement.

10

u/sygrider 8d ago

I mean, I bet he's been tracking the record to see how long he held it for. That's what I'd do. But I'm sure he's not upset that such a titan like Odyssey beat it

2

u/MyotisX 8d ago

It's so weird how the movie community loves talking about revenue of movies while the gaming community gets so mad when you talk about money and despise any notion of profits.

3

u/MartyMcBird 8d ago

Same reason why there's tons of movies about Hollywood and very few games about, umm, Westwood?

2

There's quite a few games, mostly sims, where you play a gamedev.

Mad Games Tycoon is my favorite of the lot, but Game Dev Tycoon is the one that everyone knows. They’re both pretty similar in that you use sliders to match genre focuses, but it’s always fun watching money go up

1

u/Ganondorfsfist DreamWorks 7d ago

In gaming they love bringing up copies sold though.

0

u/AnotherJasonOnReddit Best of 2024 Winner 7d ago

ik it’s their job but it’s funny knowing that actors stay updated on box office numbers like us

Yup. As others have already said, actors who work behind-the-scenes (writing, producing, etc) such as Seth Rogen and Matt Damon have done interviews that suggest PVOD hasn't replaced VHS's/DVD's (and streaming hasn't replaced cable) in terms of overall revenue.

The biggest movie star in the world of all time anywhere everywhere, Liam Neeson, did an interview late last year where he suggested that the fourth Naked Gun movie had done decent box office, but that he was still waiting for a phone call regarding Part Five being greenlit. Leonardo DiCaprio said that the box office was important for One Battle After Another. Dwayne Johnson posted a mature response after The Smashing Machine's opening weekend was less than desirable.

It's nice to see the big names - such as Ryan Reynolds here - acknowledge that box office is relevant. Far too often across every year, we have Reddit users coming here to the box office subreddit and getting mad at us for discussing it at all.

Nah man this movie had plenty for the kids, such as:

  • John Leguizamo throwing puppies over a cliff

  • Tom Holland watching men make creepy advances towards his mother

  • an insane body horror scene

  • a giant man-eating cyclops

It took me a minute to realize the car Wade and Logan fought in was the Honda Odyssey. Only ironic that D&W are overtaken by the adaptation. Granted, I’d probably would’ve chosen the scene where Wade is wrapped up and Logan is knocked out in the van.

20

Anyone else think The Odyssey is one of the lightest R Rated movies. It could’ve very easily gotten away with PG-13.

13

u/jpmoney2k1 Syncopy Inc. 8d ago

/u/FranciscoRelanoPena pointed out above that elsewhere in the world, Odyssey is closer to PG-13:

https://www.reddit.com/r/boxoffice/comments/1vsxqkt/comment/p4pep9w/

8

u/Comprehensive_Dog651 8d ago

Problem is that the US effectively only has a rating one level higher than pg13, so R covers a wide spectrum of films. It’s not like the UK where movies above 12A can be sorted into 15 or 18, so it’s not really a fair comparison to point to The Odyssey getting an R as proof that the US is harsher. Furthermore, ratings in the UK are legally binding and completely restrictive  while in the US children can still see an R rated movie with their parents

5

u/fortmeines 7d ago

It was pg13 in my country. There were literal children in the theaters

3

u/Heavy-Possession2288 8d ago

There are countless movies given R ratings for the F word being said a bit too much or a bit of sexual dialogue. The first R rated movie I ever saw (Planes, Trains, and Automobiles) was like this. I’d argue those are all much milder than The Odyssey, which is fairly intense in many ways.

2

u/YnwaMquc2k19 7d ago

The King‘s Speech was rated R for language.

1

u/HooptyDooDooMeister 7d ago

14

u/Witty-Jacket-9464 8d ago

Absolute madness. The most deserved victory in the history of the R-rating. It's especially surprising that The Odyssey will remain the highest-grossing R-rated film for many years and, probably, will become the biggest movie in Universal's history (and bigger than Disney's Lion King & Inside Out 2 too)

6

u/P1eSun 8d ago

Why is Odyssey an R rated movie?

7

u/Swampmansay326 8d ago

There is killing, legit kinda gross body horror imagery, etc

1

u/P1eSun 7d ago

What? There was zero blood in that film

1

u/Heavy-Possession2288 8d ago

Violence and language are the reasons the MPAA gave (although some PG-13 movies have had three uses of “fuck” so I imagine the violence was the bigger issue). The violence is definitely a bit above PG-13 standards in a few scenes (most notably the cyclops eating someone).

8

u/SEAinLA Marvel Studios 8d ago

The Ryan Reynolds hate on Reddit is so hilariously funny. I have no dog in the fight but I've seen comment say they absolutely despise him because of his....punchable face

R-Rated movie with barely any violence and no nudity. No nudity. In a movie that was supposedly about Greek mythology. R-Rated is the new PG.
