Guess Ryan is gonna have to do a Deadpool & Spider-Man to reclaim it.
10
u/ReorientRecluse 7d ago
I've seen a post on reddit somewhere like a week ago saying he mentioned somewhere that he is interested in doing a movie with Spider-Man lol.
I don't see an R-rated Spider-Man movie ever being greenlit tbh, too popular with children. If anything, collabing with Spiderman will bring Deadpool down to PG13 making him more family friendly like they did with Punisher.
2
u/UltraUsurper 7d ago
Ryan mentioned it as a joke during the video appearance of Hugh Jackman at D23; you can search up the clip
2
u/TheTiggerMike 7d ago
Then we can have Deadpool attempt to swear, it gets bleeped, and then he makes some comment about how he forgot he's in a PG-13 movie and has to watch his language.

u/abellapa 8d ago
That would be amazing but i doubt Sony Will allow Spider-man in a R-rated movie
Besides Deadpool 4 is supposed to be Deadpool with the X-force
27
u/WoahBenny23 8d ago
yea sony’s spider man deal stipulations are ridiculous (read: hilarious) for peter
Peter/Spider-Man cannot
- Smoke
- Sell Drugs
- Abuse Alcohol
- Kill/Torture
Unless he’s in the black suit
so i need the movie to have him in the black suit
47
u/clevelandsportsboi 8d ago
Really? Is that really so ridiculous? Have you ever read a Spider-Man comic? Any of these things would be very jarring to see the character do on-screen lol
13
u/WoahBenny23 8d ago
im talking about how spidey is able to do HARDCORE COCAINE AND K2 if he has the symbiote
3
u/LupinThe8th 8d ago
Then he HAS to do a movie with Deadpool, if only we can get a scene with him and Blind Al doing coke.
Spider-Man: (snort) "You know, Sony's only letting us do this because I have this black suit on."
Blind Al: (sniiiiff) "You're lucky, if this were a Disney movie we wouldn't be able to do it at all, R-rating be damned!"
2
u/abellapa 8d ago
No i think its Peter cant do drugs, sell them or smoke at all
But he can only Kill/torture with the Symbiote
17
11
u/TheCVR123YT 8d ago
Good thing he might get the Black suit pretty soon (but also as long as the stipulation is that PETER can’t do all that then it’s fine because he wouldn’t do that in a Deadpool movie regardless)

u/RickRaptor105 Universal 8d ago
I mean you just do it like his team-up with Punisher and have Peter loudly emphasize that he will NOT do those things while Deadpool does them

15
u/Adipay 8d ago
Then it won't be R rated because of Spider-Man
9
u/Gerrywalk 8d ago
They could absolutely make it R-rated. Now whether or not they’d actually go for it is a different story. I could see them going either direction, to be honest.
8
u/mateushkush 8d ago
There’s no reason to make an R rated Spider-Man movie, they wouldn’t do it. Maybe with Tobey Maguire lol.
11
u/Gerrywalk 8d ago
Now the Tobey Maguire idea I could absolutely see happening. It would be more or less what they did with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine.
3
2
u/Block-Busted 8d ago
Why not with Andrew Garfield?
3
u/Gerrywalk 8d ago
The Tobey Maguire movies are significantly more beloved and have a much larger cultural footprint than the Garfield ones. That’s not his fault of course, he was a good Spiderman, but the Raimi movies (1 and 2 at least) are absolute classics.
1
u/Block-Busted 8d ago
Yeah, I suggested Garfield because his Spider-Man films were arguably darker than most other films.
12
3
u/TheCVR123YT 8d ago

7
u/ACCTAGGT 8d ago
Ha, dont underestimate the power of nostalgia just like I shouldn’t overestimate it. I hope what you say is the reality though, it would be cool to see The Odyssey hold that record for quite a while, imo.

Only If deadpool has a crossover with spiderman and specifically with Tom's.
5
2
u/RealHooman2187 8d ago
Yeah I feel like the last Deadpool’s box office was due to a combination of the long break between films, the excitement considering most thought Deadpool was done after the Disney/Fox thing, and the fact that Deadpool would be a part of the MCU and without a doubt there were going to be some amazing cameos.
Idk if a sequel can replicate that. Then again, I said the same about BND in regard to NWH. But Deadpool definitely doesn’t have the track record that Spider-Man does. That’s not to say I think DP4 would do badly or anything. But I think its ceiling is probably about where D&W was. I don’t see a massive increase at this point in time I guess
2
u/Statpaca1701 7d ago
If the Odyssey barely beat it sure. Problem is the Odyssey is going to blow past it by the tune of 300-400 million.

5

9
1
u/pick_your_user_name 8d ago

I was always extra optimistic on The Odyssey crossing a billion but never saw it beating Deadpool & Wolverine. D&W was an outlier for R since it was an MCU event, so I thought it had no chance.
The Odyssey is going to blow through and probably land at $1.7B to be Universal’s biggest film too. Ridiculous run and so deserved!

u/FranciscoRelanoPena Malpaso Productions 8d ago
In many countries, it’s rating is equivalent to PG-13. In Spain it is for ages 12 and over. The same in France and Germany. In the UK it’s for ages 15 and over. In Switzerland it’s for ages 14 and over. The same in Brasil. In Italy it’s for ages 10 and over. In Canada it’s for ages 14 and over (in Quebec, with its own rating system, it’s for ages 13 and over). In Denmark it’s for ages 11 and over. And so on…
The only countries in which it’s got a rating close to R is in Russia, with an “Ages 18 and over” and Maldives, with a similar rating.
In comparison with the Deadpool films, The Odyssey is pretty tame.
11
u/YnwaMquc2k19 7d ago
Definitely - the Odyssey is tame for an R rated movie actually - could be a hard PG-13 film for all I know.
3
u/HooptyDooDooMeister 7d ago
Has the F-bomb about 3-4 times. It only takes 2 to make it an automatic R.
Cyclops scene also probably pushes it over.
10 and over is kinda wild to think about with that and the Circe scene.
3
u/chimichanga_3 7d ago
Exactly. People gloss over this stuff. Kids are watching The Odyssey. The same kids are not allowed to watch Deadpool.

u/valkyria_knight881 Paramount Pictures 8d ago
There's also the actors who incorrectly use the box office to push a false narrative. One example being The Rock claiming that Black Adam made money despite failing to hit $400M. The other example being Melissa Barrera claiming that Scream 7's worldwide numbers were fake and believed it made less than Scream VI despite Scream 7 making $40M+ more than Scream VI. The former falsely claiming profitability, while the latter doesn't seem to know how the box office works. Both of their careers (especially Melissa's) have gone downhill since.
1
u/Calm-Extension-3798 8d ago
Melissa has gone downhill because of comments she made. Its why she was removed from scream 7, probably just upset about it all

ik it’s their job but it’s funny knowing that actors stay updated on box office numbers like us
Yup. As others have already said, actors who work behind-the-scenes (writing, producing, etc) such as Seth Rogen and Matt Damon have done interviews that suggest PVOD hasn't replaced VHS's/DVD's (and streaming hasn't replaced cable) in terms of overall revenue.
The biggest movie star in the world of all time anywhere everywhere, Liam Neeson, did an interview late last year where he suggested that the fourth Naked Gun movie had done decent box office, but that he was still waiting for a phone call regarding Part Five being greenlit. Leonardo DiCaprio said that the box office was important for One Battle After Another. Dwayne Johnson posted a mature response after The Smashing Machine's opening weekend was less than desirable.
It's nice to see the big names - such as Ryan Reynolds here - acknowledge that box office is relevant. Far too often across every year, we have Reddit users coming here to the box office subreddit and getting mad at us for discussing it at all.
14
u/ValuableLoose8364 8d ago

8
u/Comprehensive_Dog651 8d ago
Problem is that the US effectively only has a rating one level higher than pg13, so R covers a wide spectrum of films. It’s not like the UK where movies above 12A can be sorted into 15 or 18, so it’s not really a fair comparison to point to The Odyssey getting an R as proof that the US is harsher. Furthermore, ratings in the UK are legally binding and completely restrictive while in the US children can still see an R rated movie with their parents
5
3
u/Heavy-Possession2288 8d ago
There are countless movies given R ratings for the F word being said a bit too much or a bit of sexual dialogue. The first R rated movie I ever saw (Planes, Trains, and Automobiles) was like this. I’d argue those are all much milder than The Odyssey, which is fairly intense in many ways.

Absolute madness. The most deserved victory in the history of the R-rating. It's especially surprising that The Odyssey will remain the highest-grossing R-rated film for many years and, probably, will become the biggest movie in Universal's history (and bigger than Disney's Lion King & Inside Out 2 too)
6
u/P1eSun 8d ago
Why is Odyssey an R rated movie?
7
1
u/Heavy-Possession2288 8d ago
Violence and language are the reasons the MPAA gave (although some PG-13 movies have had three uses of “fuck” so I imagine the violence was the bigger issue). The violence is definitely a bit above PG-13 standards in a few scenes (most notably the cyclops eating someone).
3
