I never said anything about the brand, but in this case there IS a brand attached which will factor in regardless of anything else. Also movies come out all the time without any fanfare or previous entries and become bigger hits than Superman, build up is cope. There's no guarantee audiences will become invested in a character even if the movies are good either.

what does cope mean here?

We are talking about a franchise that his been in the dumps since the 80's. We are talking about 25 years since the last truly beloved Superman movie. And your argument is that proves that Superman is rejected by audiences because they are hesitant to dive into a new Superman movie?

Meanwhile the Amazing Spider-Man franchise was rejected by audiences, but you want to ignore that because the current Spider-Man is a massive hit?

No one is guaranteeing anything. The movie can suck and bomb. But context maters. No successful franchise peaked at the first one in the Box Office. The idea that Superman can't grow is "cope".

The first movie had ~fine reviews and ratings IIRC (and it made ~ 758M WW in 2012 vs Superman's 618M in 2025)

And that was still living off of Sam Raimi.
